Eeeeeeeeeeeeew Thomas muster's ass :o

OMG @ the first thread about the models thing. Marat & Paris Hilton  Get that woman away form him ;)

Apparently they first had to teach the models what a set is and an ace. I predict chaos and lots of situations where the players will have to wait untill the models pick up the ball and figure out where to go next ;)

Marat is playing third on central court (not before 15:30 CET) against Feliciano Lopez who beat Karlovic 6-4 6-7(10) 7-6(5). Really tough cookie, as he has just won his first ATP title in Vienna and is on quite a roll. Of course, he could be getting tired...

I saw a big part of the match on TV...Not really impressive....Not very agressive...Not really focused :(
He was in very bad mood...as usual ...very angry against...who?...everybody I think :o
He has to play better if he wants to make semis...He seemed so nervous sometimes...he's not sure of himself and his game

I saw the match just now. I have to say that feli played well. his FH shot is impressive. but the BH is his weakness. while marat is smart and patient enough. he drove feli run all the court. he gave feli pressure all the match. though there were some wrong judgement to marat, he got break with some luck. the ball helped him a little bit. I suppose that he deserved it. he had 10 less UE than feli. 1st serve(52%), winners(39) and returning are also not bad.
Congrats, Marat! :yeah: :woohoo:

Aurora
10-20-2004, 04:41 PM
Yeah someone on the score thread also mentioned his returns were good, in spite of Lopez really trying to score on serves to keep the points short. Sounds good in my ears.
And the head ... well ... let's hope the head keeps it up! Surely the YEC should be motivation enough.

Interview in Spanish:

Safin: “He recuperado la confianza”

MARAT SAFIN: He recuperado la confianza.

MARAT SAFIN: No tendréis muchas posibilidades.

maratski
10-20-2004, 06:14 PM
Last week he had a bad week and this week, which is a new week, he's trying to gain points for the Masters.

Lopez is a tough opponent and already beat him twice in fast surfaces. Today was hard and Lopez doesn't give him any rythm so he had to focus all the time in order to win.

The crowd was ok today. Lopez was playing at home so he knew the crowd would be on his side. The discussion with the umpire had nothing to do with his opponent and the crowd shouldn't have gotten into that.

He got confidence when he played in Asia. He had a bad week in Moscow where he struggled on that surface. He came to Madrid a tiny bit of confidence, but he won and gained some more confidence and points.

In DC against Chile they'll give it their all cause Chile has some good players.

Koubek is playing well and it's going to be a tough match. He's confident and will give it his all tomorrow. Marat has to be careful. Koubek is fast, experienced and can be dangerous.

It's not a litteral translation, but a summary of what he said. I haven't had a spanish class in ages, but I think I pretty much summed up the important things.

RogiFan88
10-20-2004, 06:43 PM
No time to read the Spanish but Vamos, Marat! Tough match for both guys... too bad Feli had to lose so early but at least he won his first title on Sun.

Marat might as well win this cos Juanqui won't ... nobody else I care about now... and I doubt TommyR will do well w his back hurting... Verdasco... nah... yep it's got to be Marat!

Phew, I'm so glad he won. I can sympathize with you guys and all the nail-biting moments Marat puts everyone through. Main thing is- he is through to the next round, against the new Vienna champ no less.

If he eeks out a couple more tough matches I'm sure he'll start to find the form we all know he can. Maybe he will surprise everyone and demolish Koubek, though he has to improve his state of mind.

Here is a translation via an Internet translator. Between this one and the above, I think all comes though.

Babel Fish Translation Help

In English:
P: Marat, this match can be used for reivindicarte? MARAT SAFIN: Yes, it can be, because I have had a bad week, the last week. This week is to more be able to enter the Masters. I have had very good beginning and I hope that it can follow thus. P: How it sees the party that finishes playing, so it last as it hoped, easier, more difficult...? MARAT SAFIN: He has been hard, already has won to me in two occasions in fast surface, Athens and Hong Kong, so I know that it is a rival duro. It does not give a breathing you, suddenly it gives a closing you..., it is difficult sobreponerte to him, to maintain the confidence because it has much..., so for me it has been a great beginning in this match. P: Some commentary on the public? MARAT SAFIN: The performance of the public is normal considering that is a local public, he is of Madrid, has good results. I understand that people support to him, but do not understand that it is sobreacted. My discussion with the judge does not have anything to do with him, it seemed that much in the serve went ahead... that to people it did not like this and for that reason reacted thus. P: Psychologically, how one is? MARAT SAFIN: I have recovered the confidence. I have had two very good weeks in Beijing and before Moscow, but in Moscow it was very difficult to me to play and to do to me with the surface. It did not come with much confidence, but this result gives more confidence me and points, I cannot request nothing else. P: How you see the possibilities of the first round of Davis of the year that comes against Chile, How you see your rivals? MARAT SAFIN: You will not have many possibilities. We will do all the possible ones so that it is thus. We already know that you have very good players. I feel it, thus is the life. P: As far as its next rival, Koubek how you see the party? MARAT SAFIN: Difficult answer. It is playing very well, so it will be a very hard party. Probably he has much confidence and he will do the possible thing to win tomorrow and I must have much well-taken care of. In addition he is fast, he has much experience and he can be a very dangerous player.

luna904

I think he is playing really well. I hope he wins today. I did not think he looked angry or that Lopez was an easy opponent. It seems to me that when he comes to the court now, his attitude is more like 'I am here to do my job' than it used to be - where he was more carefree and fun loving. I think the rankings are deceptive. There are many good players now whose rankings are not that high. Maybe it is my imagination, but the more Marat stays with Peter Lundgren, the more he is starting to remind me of Federer, whom Lundgren also coached. I see some new shots and body postures that remind me of Federer. I hope he can reach the same success as Federer. Who was it that said 'Marat beat the pretty boy (Lopez)' They used to call Marat 'the pretty boy' when they did not take him that seriously!

Aurora
10-21-2004, 06:19 PM
Thanks luna for sharing your positive outlook and insights on his improvements! After all, he's top ten competing for a spot at the masters and he isn't there by mistake.
And yes, it's a highly competitive field in tennis, all top players get nasty defeats. I have accepted that Marat's way around the tour is an up and down, not always smoothly winning, emotional struggle. Now, almost a year back on the tour, he has to step up and get regular into the final stages of tournaments and some big wins are due. I remain confident.

question about the translation of the spanish article: "but in Moscow it was very difficult to me to play and to do to me with the surface"
what can he mean? the surface is carpet, right? like in Bercy and such? is it an excuse or has the surface in Moscow some particularities?

maratski
10-21-2004, 06:47 PM
He had a hard time adjusting to it I think. Not every indoor surface is the same.

I saw the match yesterday too..that's funny...for me he was not playing very well..and he looked angry...haha...only Marat can do that to his fans!!! ;)

I don't know about today...the score seems convincing...he was agressive??..and his returns??

question about the translation of the spanish article:
what can he mean? the surface is carpet, right? like in Bercy and such? is it an excuse or has the surface in Moscow some particularities?

Lilly, sorry I'm so late - the carpet in Moscow was slower that the one in Madrid. He said he couldn't adjust in Moscow.

WOOHOOOO MARAT!!! was watchingthe match live and reporting to the ppl on msn! woohoo!! glad to see i didn't jinx him this time.

marat's match. as i said to vass... the scoreline was goooodddd i'm really happy about the scoreline and his service game, though it was agonising to see some of his serves hit the net right in the middle of the net. bah. YEP serves were good and score was impressive.

most of his winners were aces (13 of 'em). and he relied too much on koubek's UEs. Koubek was making marat run all over the place and came up with some good shotmaking.

marat made two gorgeous LOBS!!!! and a few nice volleys. all in all, it was a good match. but not marat at his greatest. sorry.

and see...i'm tryign to balance out the criticisms and the praise lol.....so i'll probably be around at 2am again today..but i'll be on msn. not here... see ya!

I'd like to think that's because I only post when I have something wellcomposed, interesting or funny to say, but it's just 'cause I post in waves: long time hardly anything, short time all over the place (you can guess in what fase I'm right now ;) )
I really don't know how some of you gals and guys do it, 3000 posts in 4 months. (:drink: addicts :p)

Thanks for the report, Jiat! I must admit I started dreaming away last night when it seemed to go rather easy, but you've put me back thinking rational. He's come a long way, but the hard part is just starting.

Merle, I hope you didn't go through trouble for my little question :o Thanks! :wavey:

Tonight, again the last match on centre, I guess Marat will like that and it's always good to have some regularity (really, I don't think I could live the tennis life, but I guess there's a different kind of regularity)
What about Horna? I don't know terribly much about him, seems like a claycourter. I have a sneaking suspicion all I need to know about him is that Marat is supposed to beat him without much trouble. UDACHI MARAT!

Marat's playing the best tennis he's played all year, better than Australia and whatever Peter has done to improve Marat's net game, it's fanatstic, he's more of a complete player now than ever before.

does anyone know who that really young guy in Marat's box is? he's been at every tournament since the uso, WHO is he?

Kiara
10-23-2004, 08:45 AM

Kiara, that is great to hear! He's been more net-orientated this year, but good to hear he's finally really getting the most of it. Have you been watching all his matches in Madrid?

I watched his last 2 matches, im surprised at how well he's playing , everything is just GOING IN! :D but then again both Koubek's and Horna's games play right into Marat's game, they have nothing to hurt him with, Agassi is a different story alltogether

lillly, the said boy was sitting next to rausa in the china pics, he and peter keep high fiving when after every game marat wins heh!

Aurora
10-23-2004, 09:06 AM
oh yeah that guy! I saw Peter highfiving someone in Moscow too, I remember cause it made me laugh so hard. I'll check the pics.

there's been some comments on his returning not being very good. an opinion?

Kiara
10-23-2004, 09:14 AM
I dont see anything wrong with his return game, he gets the ball in play most of the time, he hit a couple of bh winners off horna's serve Koubek has a better serve but Marat made good work of it.

Kiara
10-23-2004, 09:16 AM
him

Aurora

What about Agassi next? It's the big game, if he wins he's a safer bet for YEC, no? But more importantly, beating a top 10 player again. Ok, that's just a stat but he hasn't done that alot this year. [of course because he didn't make it often too a meeting, but he had enough chances] And don't forget the huge confidence booster. The public will be on Andre's side big time I think, as he left the court being booed I read.
 when did he last beat a toptenner? I don't remember anything after AO. Am I missing something here?

come on, Marat, this is your chance! I'm already getting nervous. :scared:

Mmmyeah, I guess alot of people expect him to do a lot of return winners 'cause they have this image build up in their head as "a great returner, one of the best". There just aren't that much return winners happening in men's tennis.

Ilhame, in the first set tommy was playing his very best tennis,he put everything he had into that set, Agassi was playing like a :retard: he was barking at the ballgirls, had trouble focusing, making ue after ue and Robredo STILL had to win that set in tb, there was no way he could've kept that level of tennis up for so long. Not to be discredit tommy but he playing his very best still had to struggle to win a set against a piss poor Andre.

Tve has ok coverage, the better coverage is on satellite for me.

I'm sorry June, but we can't just go around posting hot pics and shouting how fabulous he is. The tennis is the main thing. It's going better & better but he and we want to go the next level.

Im hoping the models will be there, seriouly Andre was seeing red all through the match, he was barking orders at them and they kept getting sooo cofused they were like "huuh" plus they're slow, at one point Andre snatched a ball from the model and rolled it across the court , the whole crowd cheered  poor models, they should stick to the runway

sure, lilly! the tennis is more important. Andre is always a big opponent. marat' d better focus on the match straight. his serve, returnning, FH & BH shot, all these things must go well. tgfr hasn't got news about the guy

erm... there was another unidentifieable guy in marat's box.

according to vlad, marat hasn't beaten a top tenner since... *ding ding ding* andre at the AO. (at least, if i remember what vlad said correctly)

marat was playing better yesterday than against koubek. except for the first serves. which were  came up with lotsa nice volleys. was at the net a lot!!!!

what else... no cute ball girl with colourful braids yesterday. though marat did kiss the crowd goodbye.

Great match! Marat seemed really to focus and leave all the BS aside. Really good to see him stringing em together :yeah:

As for Agassi, Marat always has a tendency to raise his game when playing the top players and legends I've noticed. I'll never forget how he kept hammering Pete time after time. I believe that he will be 100% focused and committed to the match. Should be a cracker!!!

junekidd
10-23-2004, 10:29 AM
RonE, thanks for your encouraging.
still his 1st serve has to go well and he'd better be aggressive more. it seemed that his volley got better, but wish Agassi's crossing shot would not upset him...

Aurora
10-23-2004, 10:40 AM
Yeah, if he gets passed a few times (or misses :o ) in the beginning of the match, he gets the tendency to retreat to the baseline. perhaps Peter has worked on that.

Marat Safin surprised with his victory

00:49 2004-10-24
Marat Safin ended the hopes of a title repeat for crowd-pleasing Andre Agassi, sending the second seed to his first career defeat at the 2.425-million-dollar Madrid Masters.

The 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) loss was Agassi's first defeat at the Rockodromo having won the inaugural title here in 2002 and he did not play in 2003.

Safin will face off Sunday against fourth seed David Nalbandian, who tamed the big-serve threat of Croatian Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 6-4 to reach his second title shot of the season, says Channel News Asia.

"Long time ago, really long time ago," Safin said when asked when he last played that well.

"I'm actually surprised. It was really difficult times in the summer. I didn't play well. I lost my confidence."

Agassi played a long three-set quarterfinal Friday night against Tommy Robredo.

"I knew he was a little bit tired with the long match of yesterday," Safin said. "I could concentrate on my serve and take chances on his.", wrote San Francisco Chronicle.

According to the CBS Sportsline, "I got outplayed in the first set," Agassi said. "I managed to sort of hang in there and figure out a way to give myself more chances than him in the second. Didn't quite just get over that hump."

Nalbandian, who hasn't lost a set in the tournament, needed just an hour and 25 minutes to beat Ljubicic and advance to his second final of the year. The 2002 Wimbledon runner-up lost to Carlos Moya at the Italian Open.

What a wonderful day it is today. Marat can still do it and he finally beat top 10 players again. The confidence is there and hopefully there's enough energy left in the tank for the coming weeks.

Thanks guys!
As a matter of fact, I think he was gonna withdraw, but he did play and show some fight although the results won't show that. But I think that even at being to his best Marat would have beaten him anyway, because he was playing amazing tennis. If you saw it you know what I mean, and if you didn't trust me on this one. I think the big Marat is back and David could do nothing against it.
Maybe if David was at his best could have had a chance, but I think there are no excuses here, Marat played a great match.
Apparently David broke his toe will playing against Srichaphan and has been playing with that broken toe against Ljubicic and Dent

Safin overwhelms Nalbandian to win title

10/24/04 3:47 PM

MADRID, Spain (AP) _ Marat Safin defeated David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 Sunday to win the $3 million Madrid Masters and moved closer to locking up a berth in the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Houston next month.

The third-seeded Russian got off to a quick start, breaking Nalbandian's first two service games and winning the first set in just 29 minutes. Safin had at least one ace in each of his own service games in the second set.

Safin had 14 aces in the match, while the fourth-seeded Argentinian had just one. Nalbandian had not lost a set en route to the finals.

Safin earned $534,000 and captured 100 points, moving him ahead of Britain's Tim Henman into sixth place in the battle for the eight spots in the Tennis Masters Cup. Nalbandian, a 2002 Wimbledon finalist, stayed in 10th place.

Safin Surges in Madrid

Marat Safin surged to sixth place in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race and greatly enhanced his chances of qualifying for Tennis Masters Cup Houston when he blitzed tough Argentine David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 in the final of Masters Series Madrid on Sunday. Safin displaced Tim Henman in sixth spot in the Race and, with just two weeks of the regular ATP season remaining, now seems likely to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup for the third time in five years. Nalbandian remains in 10th spot in the Race and still has an outside chance of qualifying for Houston.

thanks to Marie from Safinator

Marat was funny in the throphy ceremony speaking perfect Spanish and making laugh everybody: was a little cruel to Nalbandian ("this was not your day") but then said "good luck for the next tournies to the Master, then he said thanks to the ball-girlsl (the models), he said:" it isn't your job but you did it very well" (all people laughing), then said thanks to the audience that supported him as he were still living in Spain, then thanks to the linesmen ("without them i woulnd't win a point" everybody laughing again), then thanks to Peter and his box, and finally to the box specially came from Russia (3 really common girls, I think friends), he said also thanks to them in Russian....he was calm, funny and kind-of-happy, smiling....but he wasn't that happy, as always, he cannot congrat himself as he deserves, anyway this was a MS title good Lord!! Marat you have to be proud of yourself!!

Safin masters Nalbandian in Madrid

http://www.eurosport.com/imgbk/TENNIS/ALL/big_MD-I163192.jpg

Former world number one Marat Safin won his first title since the Paris Masters in 2002 on Sunday with a 6-2 6-4 6-3 victory over Argentine David Nalbandian at the Casa de Campo in Madrid. The 24-year-old Russian won his 13th career crown and will move to sixth in the ATP Champions Race on Monday

The Jekyll and Hyde of men's tennis had shown in the semi-finals against Andre Agassi that when he's in the mood he could be a challenger to Roger Federer. Sunday's performance confirmed this.

Against Nalbandian, Safin swaggered around Pista Central with the same crushing authority, emerging from a run of three broken service games with a 3-1 lead on his way to taking the first set in just 29-minutes.

"The match was quite a lot easier than I'd expected," said Safin afterwards. "I don't think I can go on playing like this forever - it's too good."

His fourth Masters Series victory is enough to take Safin into sixth place in the ATP Champions Race, leaving Tim Henman to sweat further over a spot in next month's Tennis Masters Cup in Houston.

Nalbandian, who has been beaten in four of five previous meetings with Safin, was always going to have to be at his peak to unsettle the Russian third seed.

As a result, the Argentine went for his shots from the start but he was unable to match Safin's combination of power and accuracy, tiring towards the end of the second set.

The 22-year-old, most notably, made two backhand errors in the tenth game and Safin needed no second opportunity, growing in confidence and getting the crucial break at the start of the third.

From then on the Safin of 2000 came to the fore and a one hour 52 minute victory was always assured.
