I hope no-one makes this about Rafa. Rafa got OUTPLAYED and nothing less. This was about Florian Mayer bringing his A-game to the court today. Awesome standard of tennis from Florian and perfect tactics. Extremely classy performance. Great defense, great counter-punching, great volleys and dropshots, great backhand winners hit in positions one wouldn't think was possible. Beautiful display of all-court tennis. So happy for him, finally getting the credit he's deserved for the talent that he is.

This is what a good era should look like. Dangerous floaters with massive talent taking it to the top guys, lower ranked guys working their hardest and fighting for wins against pushers like Simug, and young guns like Nishikori finally realizing their potential against a lackluster performance from Clownga.

Ironically, the top players not being here and it being after all the slams has made this tournament better and more exciting, not worse. Shows that the top guys, especially Fakervic, make tennis more boring and bring everyone's level down and not the other way around.

Such an amazing performance is what it takes for a player to directly get into my siggie. Welcome, Florian Mayer! :worship:
What a tintillating show of all-court tennis, exquisite S/V-ing, mental toughness. At times reminded me of both Davydenko at his best level as of Safin - those DH backhand returns!

Rafa... well this performance once again showed what's been wrong with his game for a couple of months now. His return of serve is virtually absent, and what's more - he still makes fantastic defences on the big points, but also shows an abundancy of very uncharacteristic errors at relatively easy points. Rather disturbing... there's a lot to work on, Rafa...

Full credit to Mayer for being a rock mentally and playing great all court tennis, but we should really be disspointed with the way Nadull handled himself. Gamesmanship, arguing with the umpire, negative on court the whole time he was losing, poor handshake, the guy is simply a bad ambassador for tennis. When the Chinese crowd, which has no knowledge of either player, turns against Nadull within the course of the match, the ATP should really think about what it's getting itself into with new tennis markets by propping up Nadull.

Nadals actually very lucky not to have faced Mayer before this (apart from a futures ages ago). Most of us thought this would be a bad match up for him, but it turns out Mayers awkward style of going for the lines, creating angles, slicing, rushing the net and moving his opponent left and right is a GOD AWFUL match up for Nadal to contend with. Especially since Nadal couldn't help but continously moonball and play short bouncy balls to Mayers strengths all day. He just fed Mayer balls which compliment his style of play.

Combine that with an amazing performance from Mayer and the result isn't too surprising at all.

Just another example that if Rafa doesn't play at a A/B+ level on hardcourts he becomes extremely vulnerable to A LOT of players. He played around a B- or so level until the end (where he got overwhelmed), but it wasn't enough. An example of the thin margin of ability Nadal has on this surface. A little dropoff and he's toast to anyone playing like this. And he has no way of getting back into matches unless his opponent falls off.

We will see later in his press conference but I think he had a lot of trouble reading Mayer´s toss and guessing. He´s normally very good at that and this kinda softens his technically mediocre returns. Today he didn´t have a clue about where Mayer was going to serve imo

Too bad too, every tennis fan should have seen this match to watch all court tennis destroy the moonballing, defensive, gamesmanship, nonsense that's been dominating our sport in the Nadull-Fakervic era. Yeh, that's what Murray does tho, and gets dominated by Rafa.

Djokovic hates rhythm upsetting players, Nadal feasts on them, usually.

Topspin beats junk.
Junk beats rhythm.

It's pretty meaningful for Nadal. Lost the chance to gain points, in fact he lost some points, plus he's lost another chance to grab a title while Djokovic isn't around to stop him. It's meaningful to sour haters like you and meaningful to the rest of us who laugh at your misery. Mayer is just more talented, more entertaining and going further in a tournament Nadal was obviously desperate to win. Yup, it's immensely meaningful.

Let's call it variety instead of "junk", shall we? Cause what Mayer displayed today was definitely not junk.

nope... not junk, but elements of everything... it was a lesson in the finer arts in the game of tennis... power, spin, creativity, finesse... all the facets of the game that the true tennis would like to see a player display were on show today and executed as if it were a finishing move executed by a 5th dan black belt...

as a tennis fan i can put up with a lot if the quality is there... but, this time the time was particularly bad... it's not as if both players were doing it.... mayer was like clockwork at pretty much bang on 20 seconds... and i would not be surprised if nadal's average was over double that...

maybe it was because mayer was keeping excellent time, but for sure this was the very worst i have witnessed...

He's been placed in queue. 2012 will be Nadal's CYGS( Refer SdG) . 2013 will be Murray's CYGS( Refer Sapeod). 2014 Cilic's.(Refer tennizen) So yes. Book it. in 2015.

This is just shows how limited player Nadal is. Peak Federer, Nole & Murray can easily beat ANY KIND of players simply because they are more naturely talented tennis players than Rafa and they have far more options than him. Rafa has no plan B.

Thanks to the Djoker, a lot of player now don't fear Rafa's forehand and his game in general.

Rafa himself said in his presser that he felt that he was playing rather well, but failed miserably on his return of serve. I tend to agree with him (apart from the fact that he might indeed have played relatively well, but he's still miles away from his level in 2008 of course). At least he knows what he'll have to do to improve again. :)

Apart from that - wow he looked so depressed in that presser indeed. He really wanted, and perhaps even expected to have a good chance at going far in this tournament, perhaps even taking it. I can't help but feel that he may have underestimated Mayer for a bit...

Do you even know Rafa's preferences? He chooses to receive a majority of the times he wins the toss.

One of the upsets of the year, odds were 0.06 for Rafito and 14.00 for Florian.
This masters is now a joke...but a great chance for lower ranked players.

Clueless Rafatard at it's very best.

Mayer was trading at around 8 on betfair. Would love to know where 14 was available.

Nadal embarrassed again. Good stuff, Florian. You owned the piglet like so many players should do on these courts. Bye bye Nadull :wavey:

Seems like Nadal is falling. BRILLIANT!!

they always dismiss everything he loses... until he wins it

I think those hopefuls who think 2012 will be a better year for Nadal are in for a big shock, I doubt they even remember what they thought about 2011, after the 3 slams in 2010 it was said that he was gonna completely dominate 2011 more than any year of Federer's dominance and even win the CYGS bar injury, and look what happened, nothing is a given in tennis

I think Nadal's best is behind him and it's only gonna be tougher for him from now on

Only at MTF Vbookie I think

At my local betting office Mayer had only 6,5. :o And 12 to win 2-0.
Because of these horrible odds and rare success I stopped betting here years ago and rather spend money for other things...a chocolate massage for example. ;)

You'd think Mayer did the criminal act of messing with his bottles, the way he was playing with the 4 bottles in front of him.

He doesn't like Nadal (frankly I'm not too fond of him either :p) but I think star overreacted there... AJ is one of the few quality posters on GM, so I'd rather people get upset with the genuine whiners and haters.

Seems like his disappointment has to do with where he said he was feeling healthy and confident coming into this, rather than tired like last year and he probably had a logical reason in his mind for losing to Dodig, so this loss has basically stumped him.

I do hope Melzer didn't watch that presser, Nadal pretty much stamped all over that particular victory.

As great as it is for Mayer winning this, there is a 90% certainty that he'll revert back to type after this tournament and not push on (although it would be great if he can), while a similar % certainty that Nadal will be back to his confident competitive self by clay season next year at the latest. Clay rejuvenates the man like nothing else.

I know kneejerk reactions to upsets like these are unavoidable and inevitably will come true EVENTUALLY, but almost certainly not in this case. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he beats Djokovic the next time they play. Nothing goes towards making a great player better than bad losses.

Yep, my thoughts too. Like I said in an earlier post, I got this feeling that Rafa may have underestimated Mayer for a bit - or perhaps overestimated himself? - too. It's obvious that he isn't taking this loss easily, he looks like he's been hit by a ton of bricks in that vid...

Uhm, yeah. Well it once shows again that every player experiencing a bad loss can be a tad off the mark in his post-match presser.
That said I think that these instant mandatory pressers are always a bit cruel to the loser of the match. :o

But saying that I'm sure Rafa will be back up and running for YEC and Australian Open. I don't think the masters results correlate well for the big 4 when compared to the big events. I mean Rafa lost very early at Montreal and Cincy and a whole load of people here (including myself) dismissed his US Open chances but he had the last laugh by making the US Open final. I'm pretty sure he'll be right up there come the YEC/Australian Open.

Yup, it's immensely meaningful.

more entertaining certainly would be a debate given Nadal is immensely popular but talent wise that was a dumb thing to say, obviously Nadal is more talented than Mayer. but Mayer has some magic and played beautifully today, there is no denying that

Losing early in minors or M1000 is a sign of decline, GS failures are the natural after-effect.
Focusing on majors means you can't afford to play the best tennis all over the year = decline.

Certainly it could be a sign of a decline and I think Nadal is indeed declining physically at the tender age of 25, but I also think the motivation factor also plays a big part in it. I mean Nadal has the record for the most masters titles and in the overall scheme of things they aren't worth a lot so I think now Nadal just uses masters as a warm up for the big tournaments. He has no real pressure to win the masters outside of the clay ones imo.

It's not really that obvious. The top 100 contains a vast amount of talent spread around, only a small minority realize their potential, and Nadal is the epitomy of one that has realized their talent. Comparing what he does on a court Tennis-wise (ignoring mentality and physicality for this argument.. which is why talent is simply not enough) with numerous others like Mayer, Gasquet, even Tipsarevic.. they're certainly more talented.

I didn't say he was better, just more talented all-court wise.. that has nothing to do with his ability to win matches which is the most important thing, which Nadal is one of the best at. And obviously Nadal is better in almost all other departments. Natural ability variety wise - nay.

Yes and it is pretty obvious for anyone to see. He does not grind out matches at the masters as he does on the clay courts, grand slams or the big tournaments, especially on hard where he is at a bigger risk to sustain an injury.

Doubt he has historically needed to be motivated to win clay events. It all comes so naturally to him.. hard courts and indoor courts on the other hand need his utmost drive and determination, any slip in that and well we've seen it. Not this match though, Mayer was a man possessed here.

What's obvious is the fact that Nadal was never a top 5 player on fast hard courts or medium pace hard indoors. If he was so scared of getting injured he would have never played Tokyo and Doha this year, plus Bangkok last year.
