Too bad this match was moved to an indoor court with no TV coverage. All the funk and junk needed to be on offer.

Dogs Balls let Tomic have the 1st set, then decided to wake up serve up bakery products. Looks like his goal of top 16 seeding at the AO is on the cards.

Dolgopolov with his funky stuff can expose Tomic's movement, especially as Tomic doesn't move well forward.

First set was something I predicted but Dolgopolov played too well.

So happy for Dolgo :)

Very similar score to their last match: Sydney 2011 R32 Dolgoplov d. Tomic 6-7(3) 6-1 6-2.

Match moved indoors in first set due to rain.

Only 1 court has a roof, so they moved to one of the practice courts. They will play again.

Still too young. At least he'll accumulate some points.

Tomic is the only youngster winning big matches. He'll finish the year inside 35 I think.

Too bad I couldn't see this interesting matchup but expected result. Dolgo got the skillz when he doesn't serve at 30%. Now he's in a legitimate hunt for top10. Which reminds me of how overrated Tomic is when he is so young. It's the Dog that should be hailed as the first new star to have made it to the real top. He is right with Tipsy and friends now in the race

Overrated? I think Tomic is still underrated.
4 years between them. Dolgopolov is not a youngster anymore.

good win for alexander......you can almost bet that tomic will gradually develop into another one of those grinders from the back as he nears his 20s......where as dolgopolov will keep playing the same way as he's already 23 or something......

I just said that Tomic achieved almost the same what Dolgopolov and 4 years is a big time. Tomic can be number 1 in 4 years. Dolgopolov won't be number 1. Don't get me wrong, I like Dolgo, he just doesn't have the game to get there.

Sure but Tomic could also be stuck outside top50 in 4 years? It's a long time. Dolgopolov is closing in on top10 NOW

I think they're both interesting prospects, Dolgopolov for what he's doing now and Tomic more for his potential than anything. I mean, they're not really in very comparable situations.

Too bad this wasn't televised, scoreline was...interesting.

Doesn't mean that much, people mature at different ages in tennis. Just look at Nadal and Federer, prime example right there.

Dolgopolov is way too old to achieve anything now.

But equally, I don't believe in 'potential.' Player's games don't change once they're past the age of 16. Tennis is a sport where the players mature very quickly. in short, if Tomic was ever going to have a slam-winning game he'd already have one. You don't grow a monster forehand or serve overnight.

Must have sliced and diced him to death, and mixed it up with those flashy CCs and DLs out of nowhere. Djokovic had so much trouble in that first set against him at USO.

Bad matchup for Tomug but he should still be ashamed for giving up the last 2 sets like that :o His serve form is awful and I'm not sure if he can fix it. Makes you appreciate guys like Isner and Karlovic, just because you're tall doesn't mean you can serve and in fact a lot of tall guys can't serve because they get away with poor form.

Disagreed on both points. The game has become so much more physical now than it was even 10 years ago. The peak age for guys is probably more in the realms of 24 years old. Had Djokovic not won the Australian Open in 2008, you might be saying the same things about him as you are Alex; Djokovic clearly wasn't at his physical peak at that stage though.

In my opinion, it's not likely that you'll see an under-20 or even an under-21 slam winner anytime soon. In fact conversely, after Federer has retired, Nadal starts slowing down and Djokovic is no longer winning everything in sight, I'll be looking out for some more mature blood (25-28) to sneak a few slams.

And on your second point, you should have seen the difference in Del Potro's power between 2006-2007 and 2009 and then told me his game was already set in stone at 16.

ACC is in a peak era, it takes consistency throughout the year and a special killer shot to even have a chance at competing. Dolgopolov may be too late to be a force in the tour but you're far too late for a run at the ACC :wavey:

Valuable win for Dolgopolov. Best of luck against Nishikori.

As for people saying that Dolgo is too old to achieve anything noteworthy...I totally disagree. Age is not his problem. Alex is too inconsistent and erratic to win a slam, or even make a slam final. His game is so streaky that he would just have be consistent for two weeks, or catch some crazy luck, to have a chance at a slam.

Expected result. Doglopolov is much more talented and better player than Tomug. People hyping him as a top player can now hopefully see what happens when he comes against a decent server with varied ground game.
