Shanghai R1 : Tomic def. Anderson 7-6 (5) 6-7 (4) 6-3

Tomic the only one to take a break point. 24 aces couldn't save big Kev this time. Anderson saved 3 match points, but Tomic handled business.

Bern plays the Fish again.

Should have won in 2. Anderson doesn't last long before he makes a huge shank. Credit to him though that he kept serving big on break points.

Tomic's returning in that 3rd set was great!

Impressive from Tomic to forget that 13 minute game and close the match out to love. Still, he has too ridiculous a game to ever really be a top player.

He'll be a top player, that's never been a question.

Strong, positive performance, could have won in 2 but kept his head well after a long game in the 3rd. Wrapped it up neatly.

Do you enjoy brainless ballbashing?

About as much as Tomic's tactic that involves putting the opponent to sleep.

He doesn't have an attractive game but it is starting to look effective and winning matches is what counts at the end of the day. It will be interesting to see how he does against Fish in the next round.

He doesn't do that anymore. But it was funny how many times it did work.

At least Tomic has some knowledge on how to play the game, the stuff that can't be taught. That alone makes his style interesting to me.

His style certainly is interesting. Tomic shows up when 45+ points are on offer (or Davis Cup).

I don't like ballbashin really, but Tomic's game is puzzling. He's tall and strong looking, and moves so slowly, it seems like his defensive slicing game requires more speed on his part.

TOMIC is next DJOKER

TOMIC will be NO 1 by 2013 and maybe youngest one

It is nice with players who have a style of their own. I could never confuse Tomic with someone else even though my face recognition skills are close to zero.

I didn't see the match itself. But I'm assuming from the scoreline that his biggest weakness is his return of serve among other things he needs to work on??

Good win and I really hope he beats Fish. :)

Shouldn't have lost this though, Kevin. :o

Patrick Rafter needs to impart the wisdom of athleticism to Tomic so he could get to top 10 in 2-3 years time.
He wouldn't get anywhere near top 20 if he doesn't improve his movement.

Fish in Montreal mode should handle Tomic. Unlike Anderson, Fish can mix it up.

He has pretty decent anticipation, fortunately. If he didn't he'd be toast, because he moves like Ljubo :-)

he does have good anticipation, once the point is past 4 or 5 shots in the rally it's tomic's game against players such as anderson... once he has his man playing at his rhythm, which is basically a holding pattern of junk slice with the occasional flat burst, there is a limited range of responses he's gonna get... takes someone consistently imposing themselves up tempo to break the trance like state he manages to put his opponent into - you could be playing well, but a few unforced errors later and you've lost the confidence to hit through him and he's waiting exactly where you put your next ball...

I don't think he's actually arrogant.

I think what is happening is that he's got big expectations and pressure on his back (he's representing an entire country/continent in Australia by himself).

So as outside viewers, sometimes some of the stuff he says does sound silly but I don't think he means them whole heartedly.

He seems like a great kid. I've even read/heard during his career as a junior, he would correct line calls and things like that when he felt that some of his shots were out. I mean, he does that for the opponent?

He's got a good future once he refines his game.

Generally yes, but I wouldn't read anything from this match. He had a low 1st serve return percentage basically due to the fact that Anderson has a great 1st serve. On the other hand Tomic had a 78% 2nd serve return points won in the 1st set and 75% in the 3rd. So he got the ball back in play when he could.

in a past era i'd agree with you but look at some of the clowns at the top right now. just a glance and you're able to see that there's no game that's too ridiculous to become a top player these days :help:
