Welcome to Fill-In-The-Draw 2011
Eurasian Autumn Circuit
Tournament 1 of 7 - Bangkok

http://www.atpworldtour.com/~/media/3AD5A7CE601642C193E71FB4031EC18F.ashx?w=655&h=269
Here's what you need to know:

1) No commitments are necessary for the tournaments. Simply post your picks in the thread. You may play more than one event per week.

2) To play this game, you will post a full predicted draw for the tournament, including all winners in all matches of all rounds.

3) You must post your full prediction before the first ball of the first main draw match is struck.

4) Every player can replace his/her draw only once per tournament whatever the reason of replacement.
If you are changing picks, you must post your picks in a new post. No editing posts under any circumstances.

5) As far as qualifiers are concerned, you may post just "Q" in you predictions if you wish to make them before the qualifiers are placed, or you may wait until they are placed to predict, but remember that you must post before the first match begins. If two qualifiers play each other, and you are predicting before they are placed, you must predict based on their placement in the draw. For instance, you may say "Qualifier 1" which would indicate a prediction that the qualifier who is listed first in the draw would win, or you may say "Qualifier 2" which means that you predict the other qualifier to win.
If you didn't determine Qualifier 1 or 2, your pick will not be counted.

6) If a player receives a bye, you do not get points for predicting them into the second round.

7) Scoring goes as follows:
The points you receive will be based on the round points for the tournament. For each player you predict correctly into the second round, you receive the round points for a first round victory, and so on.

8) The tiebreak rule is to go by how many correct picks the players had in each round, (for example)
1. # of correct Final picks
2. # of correct SF picks
3. # of correct QF picks
4. # of correct R16 picks, etc.
and if the players are still tied after counting each round, they will remain tied.

9) PLEASE REMEMBER:
-When you post your picks, please list ONLY the winners of each round. DO NOT have 'Player A d. Player B' as it will make the manager's job much easier
-Also, please do not use smilies in your picks, there is really no need for it.

For more info, please feel free to visit the FITD forum in the games section

How To Send Picks

I only have a couple of requests. It's not the end of the world if you don't follow them, but my life will be made a whole lot easier especially because I have to deal with the "surprise" as well. Updates will be quicker (especially the first few) if you follow these requests.

1. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Please make sure before submitting your picks that there are no spaces after each name.
Nadal
Federer
Djokovic
Tsonga
Looks the same as:
Nadal
Federer
Djokovic
Tsonga
except the second entry has spaces after every name. If you are careless and leave these spaces, I will have to manually delete them.

2. Other managers make a bigger deal over this than I will but please do not put spaces between rounds. I honestly don't give a crap if I have to cut and paste separately but, again, easier formatting means quicker updates. Your choice.

3. The one thing that I cannot stand is misspelling. Just refer to the posted draw in order to get correct spellings. These are the hardest mistakes for me to root out and if you do not recieve points because of misspelling, it is your job to notify me because this mistake is on you, not me.

4. ENJOY THE SURPRISE!
I am really not a strict manager and really enjoy managing FITD so I welcome as much enthusiasm as possible

The FITD Board and Thunderfish
Welcome You to the
EURASIAN AUTUMN CIRCUIT

What Is It???

This is a series that will work similarly to the U.S. Open Olympus Bonus Series. The only difference is that it is at the end of the season. I am running one tournament every week from now until the World Tour Finals and each of those tournaments will be part of the series. Your scores for each of the seven tournaments will be added up for your final series score. There are seven tournaments so the top 7 players will get bonus ranking points at the end of the series.

What Tournaments are Included In the Series???

There are seven tournaments, one every week starting with Bangkok and ending with Paris. The Tournaments Are:
Bangkok
Tokyo
Shanghai
Moscow
Vienna
Valencia
and Paris

What are the rules???

This is a fairly simples plan. I (Thunderfish) will be the manager of all seven tournaments. If you ever forget which tournament of the week is part of the series, just look for the one that I am managing. There are only a couple of rules:
1. You all have busy lives. I get it. You will not be eliminated from the series if you miss one tournament. You will simply receive no points for that tournament.
2. I will release a series leaderboard update at the end of every tournament. Please do not constantly ask about the total standings. There is no spreadsheet for this kind of leaderboard so I will have to format it myself to work. Do not worry. I am not a lazy leader, but when you put pressure on me, I am more likely to make small mistakes.
3. Please for the love of god, read the post on how to make your picks.
4. The FITD board has approved these rules and the series as a whole, so no skepticism please. I have gotten permission to do this.

Prizes (Obviously the most important part)...

All prizes are in the form of ranking points. Prizes are as follows:
1st - 500 points
2nd - 300 points
3rd - 250 points
4th - 200 points
5th - 150 points
6th - 100 points
7th - 50 points

What is each tournament worth for the series??

Bangkok - 250
Tokyo - 500
Shanghai - 1000
Moscow - 250
Vienna - 250
Valencia - 500
Paris - 1000

Thanks d_s for helping make this happen! :wavey:

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Enjoy the series. Hopefully, if all goes well, we can do something like this again in the future.

There is a slight problem with your draw. It has five semifinalists. The error was made in the Simon Fognini match that you predicted. They cannot both win. Just notifying you because if this is not fixed by the deadline, you will not receive points for that match. Keep in mind that editing your posts is not allowed. Please repost your new draw.

Thanks and sorry for the confusion :wavey:

i am still going through each person's picks one by one to root out spelling errors and spaces that people put after names because Tsonga with a space after it is not recognized as the same as Tsonga with no space

for example, i found two people that listed Garcia-Lopez as Garcia Lopez

i just wanted to get some statistics up to let you all know that im still here, i hate being thought of as that lazy manager who updates 12 hours late :p

i am currently at school, and trying to scan these picks without my teacher knowing so it might take a little while, but when i am done, i will repost the first round statistics as well as the day 1 leaderboard

at the same time, i'm also setting up a spreadsheet for the Eurasian Autumn Circuit leaderboard which will be posted regularly with daily leaderboards (obviously not for this tournament because they'll look pretty much identical)

thanks for your patience guys :wavey:

So something very peculiar has happened. I have searched through everybody's picks now and the statistics are fixed.
However, in Haase's 8th of the draw, one second round pick is not accounted for. This carries through the next rounds. Only 54 picks counted in Haase's 8th for the second round, 54 in Haase's quarter for the quarterfinals, 54 in Haase's half for the semifinals.
The really weird thing is that both Haase's and Nieminen's first round matches add up to 55 picks each and the final column adds up to 55 picks.

I've spent about 25 minutes looking through every single person's pick for that match for the problem but there does not seem to be any.

If anybody thinks they can figure out what the hell happened, I'd love to know.

In other news, I am currently working on the day 1 leaderboard and it will be up within the half hour. :wavey:

Possible problems:

Space at end of name
Misspelling of a name
Wrong name in the column
Excel doesn't like you and wants to make things difficult

Those are all I can think of, hope it isn't the last.

Thunder,
It's probably easier to highlight all rows from the beginning of round 1 to the end of the final (rows 109 to 144). Do a ctrl-F (or ctrl-R in Excel for Replace?) and in the "Search for" section put a single space, and in the "Replace with" section leave it blank. Then hit the "Replace All" button. This removes every space in the picks. So the only thing to then remember is not put spaces for the winners in Column A. (Ie. debakker not de bakker)
This saves LOTS of time, you don't have to search through every pick for every person.
I made sure that all formulae in the spreadsheet have no spaces, so you won't upset the scoring calculations at all. :wavey:

For your Haase problem. Perhaps try a "Find" with Haase and include a space at the end of Haase, see if it can be found that way. Perhaps there is a Hasse that looks almost identical and is easy to miss. I sometimes will add a players name to the dictionary (right click the name), that way if there is an abnormality, the offending text will have a squiggly red line underneath.

I tried the whole find process, and afterwards I went through each pick individually. I guess after scanning the same picks a dozen times, Hasse blends in with the other 10 Haases surrounding it :D

allright, i fixed the 2nd round stat issue as well as the semifinal missing picks (somebody, i think flynn25, spelled wrote Monfls as their semifinal pick), however, the quarterfinal missing pick (in Monfils' quarter) is still hiding from me. I am going to school in 10 minutes and will spend as much time possible searching for the mistake. If I don't find it then, I will try to root it out after school.

We should create a game just about finding the misspelled pick. Its actually really funny how it hides in there, but the difference between the wrong spelling and the right one is so subtle that they all look the same

Round 2 Statistics

Just a note that only three people can receive points for Dimitrov's section in the second round because everybody else picked either dodig or gulbis to make it through. Thought that was interesting.
In addition, Chowdahead25 was the only player to pick Udomchoke to make it to the quarterfinals. Good luck Chowdahead! :wavey:

Looks like we almost just had our first major upset of the tournament. That would have screwed up pretty much everybody's draw. Luckily Simon pulled through in three. I'll just have to wait a bit longer to facilitate the misfortune of an upset... although I might not have to wait too long seeing as Haase is struggling with Nieminen and is in a first set tiebreak.

:eek::eek::eek:

Thunderfish8
09-28-2011, 05:16 PM
I also would like to congratulate Fickelgruber for being the only player to correctly pick 75% of the first round matches (9 of 12). However, several players are on his tail with 8/12 picks.

In other news, all of you that have faith in Robin Haase can start worrying because play was suspended due to darkness after he lost the first set to Jarkko Nieminen.

***EDIT: THEY HAVE BEGUN THE SECOND SET, PLAY WAS NOT SUSPENDED BUT THE OPTION WAS CONSIDERED AND DISCUSSED. I doubt that Haase will be able to win tonight, he will either lose or have to play a third set tomorrow.

Thunderfish8
09-28-2011, 06:04 PM
Turns out we DO have a major upset on our hands as Robin Haase goes out to Jarkko Nieminen in two very close tiebreaks. Congrats to the 8 of you who predicted the upset. This deals an almost equally harsh blow to everyone's brackets as would have occurred if Simon had lost.

LeaderBoard - Wednesday Update

Things to Notice:
-Fickelgruber kicked ass in the first round, but is struggling in the second round. He is seventh overall.
-*Jean* leads the second round as the only player to correctly pick all three matches so far, *Jean* is the only player to pick Garcia-Lopez as the finalist.
-Special shout out to Esimp for picking Nieminen as the finalist who upset Robin Haase today.
-This is turning out to be a very close tournament. The top 17 people are within 50 points of each other.
-3 players' champions have been eliminated (2 for Haase, 1 for Gulbis)

This is just a public service announcement. The FITD board and I are still working out one more thing about the series and I thought I should let you all know what we are thinking about. I encourage you all to voice your opinions as this will have a huge influence on the series.

The Issue: SCORING

Option A: We use the FITD rankings system to add up your points (ex. the winner of Bangkok gets 250 points towards their total, 500 for Tokyo, 1000 for Shanghai etc.)
The only real issue with this system is that it is an equalizer. It prevents people from getting too spread out. Players' totals will be based on their relative ranking for each tournament, not the points they accumulate. So this begs the question, do we want a ranking system by tournament??

Option B: We simply add up every last point you acquire in your picks (ex. a perfect Bangkok bracket is worth 840 points while a perfect bracket in Tokyo is 1880 points).
The only issue with this system is that by Paris, the players might be so dispersed that there is no chance for the top 7 to be cracked. However, I like this option more because it rewards you for every last pick you make. I also like how the points would not only be affected by the type of tournament, but by the draw size. So this begs the question do we want a ranking system by picks??

Please voice your opinion. Do you want a series that is ranked by tournament or by individual picks???
The final decision is up to the FITD board, but your opinions will be considered.

I like option B, as you may come 6th or 7th in a tournament but only miss out by say 30 points, with Option A, you would be a lot further away from the leader.

I'll throw in another 2 ways to consider.

C: The margin you have in points from the lowest point scorer (eg. you win with 840 and the lowest is 520: therefore you gain 320 points, last place gets 0 points.) This rewards high scoring but is reflective of the fields performance.

or

D: (we use this in a running series I used to belong to). First place gets 100 points, everyone else gets the % of the top scorer in points (rounded to nearest whole percent)... (eg. Top scorer is 840pts and gets 100 series points, bottom is 520pts and gets 520/840 x100% = 62 series points. 830pts gets 830/840 x100% = 99 series points) This I would prefer as it standardises all tournaments to be of equal value and is solely based on your performance in each tournament and not necessarily picking the winner in a 1000 point tournament which will give you a huge advantage. (also it might make for a very exciting ending with many players having a chance at the top 7 going into Paris!) (I really like this scoring format :D)

I like option A because it's like the ATP tour
you can do a nice result in 250 and it gives you less points than 3rd in grand slam..
it should be based on the tournament size

just a note that scoring option B would actually be the equalizer at the moment because of how close everybody is to each other

option A would pull *Jean* who's only a couple points ahead in picks at the moment, 100 points ahead in the series

I was about to say "A", it should mirror the ATP system. However, the ATP players are playing purely for themselves - results of other matches in a tournament are of no interest to the player who wins.

But here we are not just picking the tournament winner, we are picking for every match, so I guess I'll go with B.

i just realized something very interesting.

let's say i picked murray to win the tournament and he did, but i got every other pick incorrect. that would give me one correct pick overall
20+25+45+60+100=250

I definitely think tournament size should be a factor as it's more difficult to predict larger tournaments (more matches, more margin for error), so I would not be in favour of jervisjames's option D.

My vote goes to option B.

Round 2 LeaderBoard

Things to Notice:
-Our round 1 champ Fickelgruber has dropped some weight in the second round and sits at 12th currently
-Incredibly, d_s and blondie456 have managed to stay alive since all three of their correct first round picks were also correct in the second round. In fact, d_s has not lost either his finalist or champion yet
-Congrats to RNW and bandtree for being the highest second round scorers reeling in 75% (6 of 8) correct picks
-Yesterday's overall leader, *Jean*, has lost her finalist and as a result has dropped to 3rd today
-Today, the top players are even closer. The top 9 players are within 5 points of each other.

Quarterfinal Statistics

Things to Notice:
blondie456 can still get back into this game, being the only player to pick Go Soeda to reach the semifinals. If Soeda beats Young tomorrow, blondie456 might be saying goodbye to the bottom of the leaderboard.
jervisjames is the only player to pick Dodig and Andujar as semifinalists, and will suffer from their losses earlier this week.

Also, please take notice that if we decided to use scoring system A with this leaderboard, RNW and bandtree would be 100 points ahead of the next 7 players rather than 5 points ahead.

I was actually not expecting this to be so close, but since it is I am really starting to lean towards Option B, however i think jervisjames' Option D is also a valid option and have submitted it to the FITD board in addition to the first two options. The board has yet to get back to me on the final decision.

I actually find the whole idea of this series unfair, why should the tournaments which you manage be more important for the ranking than the others at the same time or all the tournaments the rest of the year? Those who predict these couple of tournaments well will already get their reward with ranking points for these tournaments anyway.

I understand why you would feel that way. That's one of the things that I will be discussing with the FITD board over the next few weeks. We just want to try something new to help keep the game alive. If we decide to keep doing these throughout the next year then players will have to be consistent over the whole year.

We have also encountered the idea that ranking points are a lame reward. Please let me know if u have a better idea.

Congrats to the players who correctly picked all four semifinalists. There are so many of you that I am not going to name you all. Having that many people nail the four semifinalists is actually really impressive.

As you can all see, we decided to use Scoring Option B, which rewards you for every pick you make. With the exception of chowdahead25 who had an exceptionally good draw, the top 30 players are all within 100 points of each other. We did not want to ruin the fact that it is so close by using Option A. You will all receive ranking points for this individual tournament as listed in the tournament leaderboard, and this leaderboard starts the race to see who can accumulate the most points by November. Good Luck Everybody and thanks for your patience with the updates and for your support throughout this whole process

Congrats again to chowdahead25 and I hope to see you all next week in Tokyo for the second tournament of the EURASIAN AUTUMN CIRCUIT!!! :wavey::wavey::wavey::wavey::wavey:

The Eurasian Autumn Circuit is only for the tournaments run over 7 weeks by Thunderfish.

The others tournaments will still be factored in for FITD points.

Fun side game with bonus points towards your ranking score at the end of the 7 weeks if you finish in the top 7

Thunderfish8

You still get points for every tournament (i think the way it works normally is your best result each week counts).

If you did better here than in Kuala Lumpur, this still counts as ranking points for you. The series is a completely separate bonus. You still receive ranking points as if the series did not exist.
