May be we should discuss the last tournaments of the year in this thread rather than in the "schedule" thread...

ATP 250 Metz

----

Grigor plays Igor Sijsling in the first round. Probably the best of the qualifiers (he hit 21 aces today) but Grigor should still be able to win this match. He's the second match on Centre Court.

so maybe i shouldnt have said that none of the qualifiers could give him trouble

sijsling qualifies and he draws him and now he's down a break early in the first set

he's serving 95% but winning just 50% of first serves

the stats are very odd, cause he serve very well as it seems and yet he lost a huge percents of the points on his first serve on this very fast indoor surface.
that is very suspicious
If he had served like he can with all that power there is no way he lose so much points on the serve. also Grigor didn't make DFs to suspect he decrease the spead or something? I hope it is not an injury, cause honestly these stats are unexplainable for me.

 no one saw the match, we have no idea what went on.

I agree, those stats do look a bit odd. Sometimes there are errors, but no one can be sure. I hope there is no injury, but I fully expect him to lose these matches anyway. *sigh* I really want him to have a break out tournament before the year is out, not looking likely.

I saw Sijsling playing vs Tursunov once. His serve is pretty good (as stat shows). Unfortunately he had to retire from that match due to injury, otherwise he'd have won. So gotta give credit to Sijsling as well and oh yes, Grigor could have done better than 2 & 2.

I'm hoping he can draw a line under last week's poor result and find some good form again. Dodig is obviously a good player, especially on this surface but if Grigor plays his best tennis, he can win this.

RandyE
09-25-2011, 01:19 AM
Dodig is definitely a tough player, having beaten Nadal this year; I'm still perplexed how Grigor's serve was broken so many times last week. My guess is that Sijsling returned really well and was on a roll on serve. Grigor will have to avoid getting into long rallies with Dodig and attack Dodig's serve. Grigor can certainly win, but it's really up to him to come through on the big points.

From the ATP website,

Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov knocked out fifth seed Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 33 minutes on Monday at the PTT Thailand Open.

Dimitrov, who started the year at No. 106 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings, won 73 per cent of his service points and hit four aces to record his 14th match win of the season.

"I thought it was a great match today," said Dimitrov, who is now 6-6 lifetime on indoor courts. "I'm still overcoming the jetlag, but I hope to do well here as I was really looking forward to playing in Bangkok. It has been a great experience so far.

"My game is improving, after a couple of rough months, but I am working hard and trying to progress. Today, it all kind of clicked into place."

Hi guys, I just returned from Grigor's match. Grigor was solid today, good service % as well. Plus Dodig gave away too many UFEs to his lil' double partner. Grigor had some flashy BH/FH passing shots and a couple of incredible gets to attract "ooh" and "aah" from the audience who's never seen him play before. Before his match, we (my friends & I, the local groupies from Challenger tournies) saw him coming to practice and showed him T-Shirts with his names on it. During the match, we kinda made sure that he heard us as well ;)

It was a good win and we were so happy. We also waited for him at the player's exit after the match for more photos and signatures... He is not popular here (yet), so there were only us the groupies and another guy. So we had a chance to chatted with him a little bit. He said he remembered us and he heard the "c'mon" yelling from us. The kid knows how to please his fangirls, doesn't he? :p

maybe that was the idea behind the invitation :haha:
there must have been some weaker teams to ensure Australia will get some wins :D

However I agree Tsvetana and Grigor on grass could be very interesting to watch since both of them are best on grass. Kinda strange that, 'cause there is not even a single grass court in whole Bulgaria but they had achived the biggest success in their carriers so far on that surface.

yeah one of the comentators kept calling him like that the whole match while the other said correctly he is Bulgarian. I found it hilarious, I mean he should at least know he is 20 not 21 :D. I am kinda used to people not knowing Bulgaria and mistaking with Romania :D but haven't expected it from comentator, especially when the other guy was saying it corectly. We, the groupies, stayed on and were very loud... haha. Simone was horrible today unlike the day he fought of Gulbis *sob* and yesterday when he carried the team through double.

After the match, Grigor stayed on court to sign for the (new) fan and there were a lot more people waiting for him at the player's exit. It's good the kid has more fan as it has been proven so many time that he plays better with loud support from the fan. He's born showman.

Murray's the favourite but Grigor has nothing to lose, he's playing well and he's shown he has the game to trouble the top players, he just lacks consistency. If he serves well and is aggressive, I think he can win it. If not, there's no shame in losing to the #4 player in the world.

Yes, I'm one of the groupies with black "Grisha" T-Shirt. There are 4 of us today. Prob more tmr. Murray will have a lot more support of course but with Grigor being his showman self (while Muzz is total opposite), Grigor will turn a lot of them. Most of the fan will be neutral and not very vocal, so I believe my friends and I can still be heard, haha.

One funny story, today we sat closer to a guy we met during BKK challengers last year. (He was a trainer/physio for local tennis players and he seems to know Grigor and Dmitry Tursunov very well.)

Today he told me that yesterday after Grigor finished his 'boxing exho', when meeting him on the player's bus, Grigor just practiced his new boxing move on him :p

Also, this guy asked me today if we prepared anything special to cheer for Grigor coz the kid just kept boasting that he has his own groupies in Thailand. :o

Yeah Grigor lost but that was kinda expecting. He is not winning matches over top 20-25 players yet so we should not expect him doing so for a top 5. Still a long way to go and learn.
As I've read cause I haven't watched the match he lost his nerves, yelled and smash his racket at some point. That isn't the type of behavior he needs to follow if trying to move onto the next step. Losing his nerves in key moments is not leading anyware.
However there are more positives than negatives from this match, looks like he improved his game a lot. Good luck in China, Grisho

I'm sorry he lost but he played some amazing tennis today and he looked far better than he did all summer. He had a good gameplan, attacking short balls, playing inside the baseline and taking the ball early. I think he can learn a lot from this match as his game matched up well to Murray's until the end of each set when he got a bit tight and threw in some errors. His serve, returning, net play and backhand were all better than they were in the US this summer.

I hope he goes to China with some confidence from this week.

Hellooooo.... I was at the match vs Murray. Great atmosphere. Lots of people besides his fangirls cheered for him. We love the underdog esp the pretty one and he didn't embarrass his groupies, thank you Grisha.

I was watching Simon's match and didn't go waiting for him at the player exit this time (as from yesterday I believe he has a lot of groupies waiting already ;) ) So two of my friends who has become his new fan at this tournament just had the black "GRISHA" done and went waiting for him. When he saw them (or the T-Shirt to be precise), he just walked right through them for photos    Other girls were a little less privileged than his "GRISHA" groupies

In addition to his brilliant performance, he has a lot more fan in Thailand now. Smiley kid who signs everything and takes pictures with everyone for as long as it takes...

See you next year Grigor.

Tough draw but he should go to China with renewed confidence and he matched up well against Tsonga last time they played so he should believe he is capable of beating him. If he does get by Tsonga, he has an easy match in the 2nd round.

People, have a little faith! This is not an unwinnable match. Of course it would have been better if he had drawn a lower ranked opponent that he would be expected to beat but his confidence is high at the moment and I think he can beat Tsonga. He said after the Wimbledon match that he was unlucky to lose it so he should be relishing the chance for a re-match and if he is going to win this, he needs to believe in himself.

If he's going to become a top player, he can't run from challenges, he has to embrace them.

there was nothing unlucky about the loss to tsonga at wimbledon, i really hate it when players say they were "unlucky" to lose.

His game is improving but mentally he still falls apart in the wrong moments and loses his cool when things dont go his way and until he masters that he will not beat a player like tsonga

Djokovic, Monfils and Isner have withdrawed from china open that i believe they will withdraw from Shanghai. And it's very possible for Murray to withdraw so Grisha have a big chance to enter the main draw directly. I watched the game against Tsonga today in Beijing, he seemed so anxious to win at the last two games that he lost hisown tempo, he played really well today, and he seems very confident after the game at the hotel, thus i believe he will do better next time. It's time for the rising star!

Why do you think he might withdraw from Shanghai? I haven't heard about him being injured.

I didn't manage to see the match but from everything I've heard and from following it on live scores, it looks like he played really well. All players develop at different rates and maybe he might take a bit longer than some others but he clearly has the game to succeed and the mental side will come with time.

A win here would have been fantastic but his fans should be a bit more positive. He's a far better player than he was at the start of the summer and as long as he continues improving, the big results will come soon enough.

He pulled out. I dunno the real reason, I guess he's just tired.

I saw the match in Beijing in the stadium, he played well actually, and he was the one who has all these advantages. But he's weaker on key points, that's how Tsonga took the win from him. He was serving well, he was having a blast at the start of the match. But he was being cranky and stuff when he met his chances, missed quite a lot of weak balls from Tsonga. And, Tsonga saved almost EVERY SINGLE break point by his serve. Dimi's backhand, ooh, absolutely the weak part of this match.

But I have to say, he is such a NICE KID!!! Me & my friend we knew this is the first time he's ever been in China, so we bought him some little gifts: a Chinese seal with his name from me, and a panda-head hat from my friend. He was like studying all those stuffs after getting them in the minibus. And his coach is a interesting man as well. After watching his match I took a taxi back to the hotel and I saw him later getting off from the minibus and I got all choked up, rly don't know what to say. Just some consolation words and stuff. Later I'm not able to be there to send him off to the airport becuz of some personal issue, and my friend asked him if he still remembered me and he said yes. And I told my friend to tell him that the next time he's in Beijing, I am so gonna be his city guide and stuff. And he went straight home.

Well as much as I like to see him play, still it's his own decision cuz it's his body, his call. But I had a great time talking to him and watching his matches and stuff. Rly wish to see him next yr.

And by the way, anyone knows if he has twitter or facebook?

He should be able to get by Ilhan (never seen him play however..) - having said that, crazier things have happened. Overall I'm happy he doesn't have to face either Murray or Nadal until the late stages. (Murray looked 'scary good in his dismantling of Rafa in Tokyo!). Roddick would be tough in the second round - we'll see! He's got a great opportunity here. I watched back the last two tournaments he played (highlights on Youtube) and really liked his serve, forehand, and the depth on his backhand is improving. He seems to get more and more comfortable and holding his own on baseline rallies. His learning curve is picking up and I expect some great results coming up here by the Australian Open next year. It was good to see he didn't panic after the 1st set and turned it around big time in the 2nd. Even when he lost the first break at the start of the 3rd, he re-focused and broke back again which is the perfect way to handle these situations. I think he can beat Roddick but he has to start better than today as Roddick is too experienced to let him back in the match.

Grigor will have some chances vs Andy. However Andy sometimes argues with refs and Grigor loses his focus in such situations. Rememmber the match with DY when he yelled and Grigor lost completely his focus and dropped the set 6-1 losing 6 games in a row.
I hope he learnt how to keep his head cool and shows what he is capable.

This match is on the main stadium court tomorrow from 6pm local time. I'm on holiday so I will get to see it if there's a live feed. Can't wait and I think he has a very good chance of winning this if he serves like he was the last couple of weeks.

Good hold by Grigor. His 1st serve is good but he needs to cut down the errors.

4-3 Good game from Grigor. Nice to see him serve & volley on 2nd serve and he's the more aggressive of the two.

This match is being won or lost on Grigor's play. He's either hitting great winners or making stupid mistakes. Roddick is playing smart by pushing the ball back and waiting for an error from Grigor. If he can tighten up his game, he can win this.

I wasn't optimistic for the match to be honest. I knew he will lose it but the way he did is very frustrating and dissapointing.

It wasn't a good match from him. He hit too many errors and shouldn't have lost his serve when he was serving for the set. Disappointing.

i kind of had a feeling this would happen but i chose to be optimistic this time, as you saw in my initial post when the draw came out.

Well it's now official that Bulgaria will play in 2012 Hopman cup and we are in group A with Czech Republic, Denmark and USA. So that means Grisho will face Tomas Berdych, Frederik Nielsen and Mardy Fish in january. :)

I'm looking forward to his next matches. Loss, disappointment, frustration, etc are just experience he needs to grow up into. Welcome to the big-boy tour.

Anyway, after one year of being a fan, I'm happy seeing him improving gradually although it may not meet with his (young, rushing mind) expectation. He'd better take his time, ignoring peers or pressure to become somebody. Toughen up and learn to tell others who fill his head with negativity to STFU.

Highlight were the 3 double faults that led to the rebreak in the 2nd set. Even MacNamara let hang his head down. That makes me worry. I have the feeling that they don't know what to do to turn this around. Roddick was very beatable but grigor was able to make so many UE that he lost this match. This is just a mental problem but what to do? I'm a bit worried, really...

oh poor kid

please, next time you talk to him, tell him we are still behind and support him :). It must have been very frustrating for Grigor, though, much more than we are! Poor kid really cares about that loses. He needs to keep playing, to not gave up next matches, to still think he is good enough to keep with the top players.
Next year will be better than this one, I promise :D.
Make him promise you he will give his best and fight till the end. That's all we need to see at this stage - that he is fighting. even when results are missing.
I was very very dissapointed when he just gave up and stop playing earlier this summer and felt much better now when saw him fighting till the end, even though this loss was very frustrating.

Sooner or later it will turn arround! :)

I wonder how doeas it feel to be Peter Macnamara these days. :D not easy, I guess.

I got the feeling he needs someone to encourage him mentaly. PMac is doing a great job with him, but he needs someone else to add into his team. It is not a shot or muscle what he is mssing. It is in his head the problem.

Well, I must say that he definitely seemed to be the more talented player with much more variety. His topspin backhand looked great, however, his slice bh was very inconsistent, especially the first set. Great thing to see was that he overcame that weakness and had a chance to pull off the upset. It seemed that he was not willing to take calculated risks and go for his shots when they were there at the end of the second set. You could tell that Roddick was content with keeping the ball in play and waiting for Grigor to commit an unforced error. In the end, Grigor needs to believe that his opponent has no business being on the same court with him, get that first serve in play on the big points, and continue to improve on the return. I can see tremendous progress from earlier this summer - he will get over the hump pretty soon. Now what to do about his shoes...he was sliding all over the place;)

Back from my 2 month ban.
Been followed Grisho and I think he finally plays the way he should have played earlier this year. Only problem is still the weak mental. Some points to defend next week from a ch, but still should finish the year in top 60 imo.

Oh Dear!

Don't know what happened but I guess misunderstandings may occur from someone whose English is not his mother's languge :D I am sure he didn't mean to offend you. Maybe tried to avoide the paparrazzi :D :p

Haha I'm not like blaming him or something, I'm just saying, he caught my friends by surprise. And they were totally not prepared.

Paparazzi, haha, that must be me lol. Unfortunately I missed his actions in Shanghai cuz I'm already in Ecuador now for working purpose...But I'm so gonna see him again next yr in Beijing!!!

And seriously no one knows if he has a facebook account or a twitter?

There is a twitter account with no tweets so probably fake. And there is a officially lokking fb account but as I heard it is also fake and btw there are only comments from "him" (or the person who faked the account) once a month or so...
