All things Rugby World Cup 2011 in this thread :worship:

The tournament kicks off in 7 days!

Who are you rooting for?

Opening match is New Zealand vs Tonga.

England opening match should be a blinder vs Argentina.

A lot of Argentines on this site, hope your getting behind your team.

You Aussies must be full of confidence after beating New Zealand last week, think you can get the job done on the big time?

So many talking points, im excited to see how teams will fare against each other on Neutral ground, will be very eager to see what damage France, Ireland and Wales can do on neutral ground, and whether Scotland can pick up and do some damage too.

France are probably the best team to have never won the tournament, lets see how they go.

New Zealand/Australia final is nailed on and hope it happens as the Aussies are the only ones who can stand up to the All Blacks and give the world a great final.

England/Argentina won't be as competitive as it could be, Argentina are just not the same without Hernandez. The team lacks that creation and flair without his presence. I expect Argentina to lose to the All Blacks in QFs.

FWIW, my predictions...

QF
Australia bt Wales
France bt England
South Africa bt Ireland
New Zealand bt Argentina

SF
Australia bt France
New Zealand bt South Africa

F
New Zealand bt Australia

I am looking forward to seeing Israel Dagg run like the wind, the guy is just incredible in motion and doesn't even look like he's running as fast as he can.

England are my dark horse.

I wish Ireland could play as they can, but hardly ever do. Their star players are near the end of their careers.

But it will be the Antipodean 3 and probably France to fight it out.

Only 22 hours to go!

England vs Argentina and Wales vs South Africa the key clashes of the weekend.

I think there will be an upset, just cant decide which one. Wales have come so agonisingly close to beating the Boks a number of times the last few years. They are due a win.

The sport has been officially 'professional' for long enough now to ensure a more consistent quality throughout this competition. It's a different ballgame now. England's 2003 squad transported to 2011 wouldn't win the World Cup, I should imagine.

Hopefully NZ take this again... Finally.

Back NZ heavy on the HC when they play France - you can just see the French gladly tanking the shit out of that match while the All Blacks have to honour the home crowd.

I would love to see a spectacle of both sides doing everything they can to lose that one. :D

Yeah its not fair, at least in tennis when the tops seeds play the lower ranked everyone still gets 2 days rest.

I think we will see some blowouts now, the fatigue will really set in for the minows and whilst the games will still be in the balance come 60 minutes, the fatigue factor and realisation their playing for nothing no more will really hurt.

Ugly turn: Kiwi hate vibe is marring World Cup
Georgina Robinson
September 21, 2011

A Kiwi apology to Aussie rugby fans
AUCKLAND: Australian rugby fans claim they have been spat on and abused by New Zealanders at the World Cup.

Phil Dunne, a Sydney man who flew into Auckland with his wife last weekend, told The New Zealand Herald a "hate vibe" had become entrenched in the psyche of many New Zealanders.

"Some of the charming exchanges involved sexual comments about my wife, instructions on how we could all f--- off back to Australia and even included one charming bloke attempting to spit on us," Mr Dunne said.

"I think the hate vibe given off by New Zealanders towards us is so entrenched at this World Cup that most Kiwis don't even realise how hostile they actually are."

The story set off debate on talkback radio.

Radio Sport host Miles Davis said he had observed the same "vitriolic" hatred directed towards Australians in other cities.

"I saw it in Dunedin and I have got to say it's not a pleasant side of the New Zealand rugby fan," he said.

Another supporter told the Herald there were patches of real meanness at Eden Park during the Australian game against Ireland.

"A Kiwi, dressed in Irish green, shouted to a group of Australian fans, 'It's not mardi gras you f---ing poofters,'" the unnamed fan said.

Radio Sport listeners said the abuse was not confined to Australian rugby supporters or to the World Cup.

Davis heard from two listeners who said they were abused and had beer tipped on them for supporting Australian NRL teams.

"I no longer go to [Warriors' home ground] Mount Smart because I've been spat on, had beer spilled on me, I was almost run over in the car park," listener Brian sent via text message to Radio Sport.

A listener named as Alex said his wife was abused for supporting the Springboks.

"There's a fair amount of it out there and it's not pleasant," Davis said.

"But anyway a lot of people think 'harden up' - it goes on elsewhere in the world so it makes it right here."

Finally the knock out stage starts this weekend.

Ireland v Wales
England v France

Funny how the draw has worked out where both hemispheres play each other in the QFs and SFs. The first 3 QFs could go either way.

Maybe this tournament, but historically France are probably the best team to have never won a world cup.

In 1995 they were screwed out of a final after a late try to them was disallowed and South Africa advanced 19-15. Before the days of television replays of course.

Id love France or Wales to win IF the All Blacks dont. Australia having 3 world cups would just be, well, unbearable.

What does the last 10 years have to do with 'deserving' to win this tournament? Australia's form recently has been better than France or Wales and you'd 'love' them to win. Your bitching about reffing just shows what a chip on your shoulder you have. Pure hilarity.

I will be absolutely shocked if Australia will make it past the semis, but if they win the final they'll have beaten the overwhelming tournament favourites and the reigning World Champions along the way. I don't see how anyone could say they DIDN'T deserve it.

Lucky win by New Zealand, tried to shit their pants once again in a World Cup but the French missed 2 penalties in the 2nd half.

Don't be selective. NZ missed penalties in the 1st half and conversion. One side jagged their way there and played above themselves, the other didn't yet still their 4th best number 10 still got it done.

Best team in the tournament won.

So now the french can feel how the welsh felt after the semi final, good.

Best team of the tournament won but i would have liked to see them facing Wales or South Africa.

Best team in the past 4 years won the World Cup. France were very good as well, definitely didn't expect them to get as close as they did tonight.

Joubert was very generous at the end for the All-Blacks. Congrats to them.

World cup finals traditionally are.

France must be gutted..but at the end of the day they became the first finalist to have lost 3 games in the end..not something you want.

Best team in the tournament won. But I think the second best team in the world on their day were in the final.

this tournament will be remembered for kiwis spitting on australians and the booing of quade cooper... fair play...

should new zealand be potential host any sporting event in the near future, we should remember Black Sunday 2011... tragic...

i would have enjoyed gorging myself upon the bittersweet tears of new zealanders today...

it was not to be...

oh well you get that some times...

Congrats to New Zealand. Winning the world cup in their favorite sport on their home turf, much like India in the Cricket world cup earlier this year. Must be an amazing feeling.

NZ should have created a bigger lead in the first half. Given the situation at halftime and the way France came out and played, they probably themselves should have won the World Cup given their superior and more enterprising play. Close match and in a sense a match of two halves. It was played with so much ferocity, the ball handling was consistently excellent and as per usual the French created the sort of try that only they are capable of producing.

VERY happy NZ got this done at last (again)!

I hope you don't think I seriously meant that the play on the field was boring. I thought it one of the best matches of the tournament. No set scrum until the 17th minute. You gotta like that.
A nailbiter right up to the final whistle and more running backs than I saw in any other match.
