Filo V. 08-22-2011, 10:47 PM Looking at the draw for my faves, the ones with the best chances to qualify are Paire and Beck. I'd be surprised if they fail. Berankis has a nice draw, but I can see Hernych in R2 causing problems. Hopefully he avoids Farah in QR3 also. nole_no1 08-22-2011, 10:47 PM Probably good matches to watch: Sijsling vs Stebe Paire vs Fischer Chiudinelli vs Nielsen Guccione vs V.Pospisil (why not?) Berankis vs Alcaide Delic vs Donskoy Dancevic vs Clement Pathetic matches between claycourter mugs: Naso vs Fabbiano Lisnard vs Klec Estrella vs Lorenzi Sorensen vs Brugues Davi(BRUGUES DAVI IS A HARD COURT LEGEND I CAN'T BELIEVE I SAID HE'S A CLAYCOURTER MUG PLS GOD OF TENNIS AND WILLOUGHBY FORGIVE ME :worship:) Viola vs Gianessi misty1 08-22-2011, 10:47 PM all in all i cant say im happy alot of my guys i want to see qualify either run into eachother or have draws that would be a miracle to come through only ryckas really has a draw where i can say he should qualify 100% willoughby 08-22-2011, 10:50 PM Pathetic matches between claycourter mugs: Naso vs Fabbiano Lisnard vs Klec Estrella vs Lorenzi Sorensen vs Brugues Davi Viola vs Gianessi :haha: Brugués is a pure hard-courter. nole_no1 08-22-2011, 10:54 PM De Schepper has a good chance to qualify Dancevic has a good chance IF he beats Clement Copil's draw is not so though but he didn't play any tournaments in the last period Schoorel should qualify easy Grigelis has a though 2nd round matchup but if he wins he should qualify Berankis should qualifiy but he's not in shape The most difficult and interesting session is: Zemlja/Luczak/Chiudinelli/Nielsen/Brezac/Kosakowski/Guccione/Pospisil :haha: Brugués is a pure hard-courter. Yes i know i should've said mugs AND claycourters, not claycourter mugs Filo V. 08-22-2011, 10:56 PM Ilhan's draw is incredibly soft, so I see no reason why he won't at the very least make QR3. Schoorel has an OK draw. Galvani is extremely tricky for him as a match-up and as an R1 opponent, but he's coming from clay and retiring his last match. Udomchoke is also potentially very tricky. But if he gets through those matches, I expect a qualification. Sijsling isn't going to be easy for Stebe, and then Stebe v Goffin likely in R2 will be very tough. Whoever wins that match should they play I think has a good shot at qualification. Ward v Yani is a tough R1 match. Also Ram, Matosevic in that section. Should be very competitive. The Soeda-Odesnik section to me is the toughest. A lot of evenly matched players who can beat each other. I think Smyczek will beat Soeda and hopefully the drug user loses to Jones. willoughby 08-22-2011, 10:58 PM Yes i know i should've said mugs AND claycourters, not claycourter mugs nice try  u could just say that u didn't know who Brugués is, that would be more trustful. Filo V. 08-22-2011, 10:59 PM Greigilis got a great draw for an unseeded player. He definitely should make at least QR3, unless Zverev actually finds his game. Bemelmans got a very advantageous draw as well. I think Weintraub has a good shot to take out Capdeville. nole_no1 08-22-2011, 10:59 PM nice try   i really knew that i just made a mistake what's so terrible? Probably good matches to watch: Sijsling vs Stebe Paire vs Fischer Chiudinelli vs Nielsen Guccione vs V.Pospisil (why not?) That should be what sends him to the victory now. misty1 08-23-2011, 10:45 PM andi beck gets the break 4-1 in the 2nd set Filo V. 08-23-2011, 10:45 PM Silva 7-6(5) over Farah. Very back and forth set. Farah had a *3-0 tiebreak lead. madmax 08-23-2011, 10:46 PM Silva takes first set 7-6(7-5) against Farah. Surprising result here Filo V. 08-23-2011, 10:47 PM Janowicz wins the second set 7-6(5) He should be winning much easier than he is, but he's not the best returner for sure. Let's see if he cruises to victory now. Filo V. 08-23-2011, 10:47 PM Silva qualified last year by beating Mahut, so beating Farah wouldn't surprise me  Filo V. 08-23-2011, 10:48 PM Farah is the bigger threat by a large margin. Now serving for the match at *5-1. Expected cruise control in the second set. Alcaide has been out with injury and is pretty much 90% serve. Meffert is mostly serve as well, Berankis likes these sorts of players. Begemann is mostly serve and Silva has no weapons. Easy draw, that he must go through. Filo V. 08-23-2011, 10:55 PM Rufin 6-3 6-2 over Meffert. Another young talent who would make a nice addition to the MD. misty1 08-23-2011, 10:56 PM andi beck 7-6, 6-1 Filo V. 08-23-2011, 10:56 PM Rhyne serving for the match over De Voest! Filo V. 08-23-2011, 11:49 PM A good win for Ryderstedt over a tough HC player. Surprised but impressed. Good serving numbers. Filo V. 08-23-2011, 11:52 PM I knew Ciric wasn't good on hardcourts but I didn't know how bad. But now I see he is 5-13 in hard court challenger and futures matches  Yeah, I checked his HC stats as well. His returning is very poor on hard court. Also I guess if you return his serve the chances of winning the point is like 90%. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 12:07 AM Jaziri 6-1 6-1 over Romboli. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 12:08 AM Strode got broken for 3-3 after losing only three points on serve to that point to take a 6-3 *3-2 lead, and then struggled to hold for 4-4. Nerves with the finishingline in sight perhaps. Hopefully he can get the win done in straights. abollo 08-24-2011, 12:21 AM Malek :worship: Filo V. 08-24-2011, 12:27 AM Bozoljac 6-3 6-2 over Witten. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 12:30 AM Strode over Ciric 6-3 7-6(4) Good job to take the match in straights after losing the lead he had in the second set. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 12:33 AM Play over for the day. Been interesting. Biggest upset definitely is Middelkoop over Janowicz and also Yang beating Van Der Merwe so easily, and Jones beating Odesnik. The guys I don't like almost all lost, so I can't complain :) misty1 08-24-2011, 12:59 AM good luck tommorrow to : marsel ilhan marius copil vasek pospisil ibreak4coffee 08-24-2011, 02:02 AM Great day at qualifying today :) While I didn't see any great tennis, some good performances and the facilities for fans have been upgraded this year :yeah: Here are some match reports - with so many one sided matches the bonus was I saw a lot of different players. Rieschick vs. Bautista-Agut - Garbage. That would be Bautista-Agut. I'd never seen Rieschick live before, my god - he makes Jesse Witten look athletic. This guy is way too big to win a five set match. Looks like a Sunday recreational player. That said, he was serving well and keeping the ball in play. Bautista-Agut did the rest by literally missing everything. Poor performance. Soeda vs. Smyczek - Smyczek played horribly. Missed sitters, couldn't stay in rallies, never posed a threat to Soeda's weak serve. He was clearly on edge all match too, screaming at fans and the umpire when people kept walking around in the stands during points. Soeda's effort was very business-like - he did what he needed to do, didn't make errors. Was probably the most consistent player I saw all day. I dont see Rieschick causing him any problems, nor Lodja or Jones. I think he qualifies based on today and doesn't deserve the hate Filo V. has been bringing his way - he was a cut above most of the guys I saw today. As for Smyczek, most disappointing player of the day for me (cause I like him) - but other guys played worse. Zopp vs. Bubka - Bubka was using the serve and forehand combo to great effect. Zopp didn't have an answer. Was close in the second set, but you never felt Zopp was going to win. Somebody posted here I think he's coming back from injury - that makes sense, he didnt look sharp at all. As for the pole vaulter, I would imagine if Bemelemans is serving well, he'll have a hard time winning his next match. But if he serves like he did today again, who knows. Jouan vs. Matusekevich - I watched about 6 games of this match in the second set. Jouan was solid, but not spectacular. Matsukevich on the other hand doesn't belong at this level based on what I saw. Just horrible tennis - one of the worst players I saw on the day. Cant remember one winner he hit all match. I imagine though that Mitchell Frank can beat Jouan as he doesnt have the weapons De Schepper does and Frank still pulled off the upset. Donskoy vs Delic - The earthquake hit during this match, so was a little distracted in the third set as everyone around was talking about what had just happened. In any event, I missed the first set, but Donskoy and Delic were pretty evenly matched in set two. In the third, Delic should have really done better. Had 0-40 at 1-0 and played some loose points. After that, he completely fell apart. Too bad - had Delic broken and kept up his level in the third set, I think he would have had a great shot at qualifying. Donskoy is an interesting player - the talent is definitely there, but it never seemed until late in the third set that he was very solid. I didnt watch Kudla today (:banghead:) so not sure how they match up, but if he plays well I think Donskoy has a great chance to win that. Dancevic vs. Clement - The only match I watched start to finish. Frank played very well. He was on top of Clement from the start - was holding easy and had deuce on Arnaud's first three service games. Had 6 break points in those games where on the first five he missed five backhand returns in a row without putting the ball in play. Was starting to get frustrated. Then Arnaud gave him a gift, double faulting on the 6th but Frank played a loose service game to get back to 3-3. That game was the turning point of the match. Frank had already been screwed over by the umpire the game before, and it happened again at 30-15 to Clement. Clement hit a ball literally two feet out but the umpire gave the point to Arnaud. The next point, Frank ripped a frustration forehand that hit the line. After that, his level rose considerably. He broke Arnaud twice in a row to win the set 6-3, and then held very easily in the 2nd set while breaking Clement with several fantastic passing shots and forehand winners. At 5-3 serving, he went up 40-0 with some good play again, and then... well Frank historical inability to close came back almost. He double faulted twice to get back to 40-30 then missed an easy backhand for deuce. Fortunately for him, after a couple more misses Clement missed badly on a weak second serve, and then Frank closed in out with a great rally. Overall, Frank will be very happy with this performance, needs to improve the return game against Wolmarans though. Clement on the other hand should be ashamed - his first serve was non-existent, his attitude on the court was poor, and he was pushing like a Spanish clay courter. Berankis vs. Alcaide - This match lasted about 30 minutes it felt - I missed the first three games but saw the rest. Berankis was zoned in - by far the best looking player I saw at qualies all day, and I imagine this will be the last GS qualifying he'll ever have to play. Rarely missed, dealt with the big Alcaide serve well, and hit some great forehands. I can't see Meffert or his last match being more than a formality unless he totally forgets how to play tennis. I felt bad for Alcaide though, because he would have beaten the vast majority of guys I saw today. Berankis though is one of those guys who you see at qualies and have no problem seeing him winning some matches in the MD. Niland vs Cervenak - I question Cervenak's decision to travel to New York to try and qualify. He doesn't have the level on hardcourt to do so, and that was apparent from the first few points you saw. Niland played well and looked like he wanted it more. I missed the first part of the first set but watched the whole second set and the end of the first. I remember watching Niland last year cruise through R1 of qualies and thought he'd qualify, but I'm unfortunately not sure this year he'll pull it off - the match against Yang will be tough and Conor is steady but lacks huge weapons that allowed Cervenak to hang around longer than he should have in the 2nd set today. But his section has opened up and he's certainly got a shot. I'm pulling for him though - for some reason comes across as a really nice guy the way he comports himself on the court. Middelkoop vs. Janowicz - Very surpised by this. I'd never seen Middlekoop play. I missed the beginning of the first set, but Janowicz was off his game for most of the match. Anytime there was a rally, Middlekoop won. His groundies were very solid in fact and Janowicz was missing a lot at the net too. Janowicz has a huge serve but wasn't winning many cheap points. The level of the tie-breaker was very high. Most points were won by winners, and Janowicz actually played two fantastic points at 5-5 to take the set. However, in the third set early he was up 40-15 and lost the game, and after that looked too frustrated to really make a comeback. Actually on that point, the only guy I saw today who looked capable of coming back was Dabul - most guys it seemed lacked the mental strength to turn things around. Ryderstedt vs. Dabul - Speaking of Dabul, I caught a lot of this match but not all. It was frankly a crime Ryderstedt won the first set. Dabul was screwed on a line call that would have given him a break to lead 5-4, and he was the much better player early on. Another line call went against him at 5-5 though and he seemed to lose some interest and was thoroughly outplayed in the breaker. In the second set, it was pretty even with break chances both ways, but Ryderstedt won most of the big points. I'm really glad Michael won because he was the player dictating play and taking chances. I like his chances against Jaziri, especially since Romboli gave Malek absolutely no resistance whatsoever in the three games I watched of that match. Van der Merwe vs. Yang - A disgrace. Yang didnt have to work for anything. Van der Merwe was spraying balls all over the place, his serve was lacking. Total garbage. Worst performance of the day. I left early in the second but I see from the score nothing changed at all. Yang vs. Niland should be a good match. Filo V. is totally justified in hating on Van der Merwe - there's very little talent there besides the huge serve. Bozoljac vs. Witten - Some of the cleanest hitting I saw all day. Bozoljac was rocking the Janko Tipsarevic look today (seriously looked exactly like him) and played very well - he's going to be dangerous moving forward. The serve was on most of the time, and the two handed groundies were working too. He was charging the net consistently and winning almost everything. Witten looks like he's on his last legs - he did hit the shot of the day though - a behind the back winning lob that even Bozoljac stopped to applaud - the crowd gave him a (deserved) standing ovation for it. But he was never a threat to win the match - Bozoljac was too solid and Jesse's serve wasn't on. Bozoljac-Beck should be a great match. Overall the best three players I saw today were Berankis, Dancevic, and Bozoljac (in that order) and the worst three were Matsukevich, Van der Merwe, and Cervenak (no order needed - they were all just terrible) :wavey: Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:38 AM Soeda is garbage, but he's made to look better than he is because most guys he beats cannot handle his consistency. But whenever he plays a good player, he almost always loses. Which is why almost all of his results are in Asian challengers. Therefore, I don't really like him, because he's made the top 100 really without working for it at all. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:47 AM As for Van Der Merwe, total garbage. Glad you saw that today. A lot of people like him on this forum but he has NO game. Middelkoop is the type of player who plays good about 4 times a season. At times he's a good player. But Janowicz is as inconsistent as it gets, and if the serve isn't working, he's not winning. Good to hear Frank played sharp, but Arno has no game anymore and the bad attitude isn't a good sign at all but is a common occurence now, because he's been playing injured and losing. I don't see him continuing if he doesn't do well in these French events coming up. ibreak4coffee 08-24-2011, 03:40 AM A few pics from today... The qualifying tournament for Grand Slams is always an amazing event to attend, so you must be having a great time. Rieschick is bigger than Witten? Must have gained a bit of weight then :o But he has been having decent results as of late, finally getting his game together. Bautista should have won that match straightforwardly though. The problem with Soeda is that he's not good enough for the ATP Tour, but too good for most Challengers. He's hovering in that twilight zone. Great to hear that Ilija has decided to play some good tennis again. Although, knowing him, the next match might be total garbage again. Great day at qualifying today :) While I didn't see any great tennis, some good performances and the facilities for fans have been upgraded this year :yeah: Here are some match reports - with so many one sided matches the bonus was I saw a lot of different players. I expect Weintraub over Capdeville. Weintraub is my pick as the guy who surprises every season with a run through qualifying. Sorensen should have a good shot at Brugues-Davi if he's playing well and totally fit. I think Galvani has a good shot over Schoorel, but I really hope I'm wrong about that. I expect Thomas to come through, but it will be difficult. Also Estrella over Lorenzi, Sijsling over Stebe are potential upsets, and I'd never put Huta Galung as a definite winner in any match, so look for Teixeira to maybe pull the upset, although I doubt it, Filo V. 08-24-2011, 01:08 PM Izak has a great game, when he's on. Iván 08-24-2011, 01:47 PM i hope udomchoke can win but he is comming into this event abit cold not sure what to expect from veic on hardcourts Filo V. 08-24-2011, 01:50 PM Zach's had a lot of injury problems. Zverev, Ball, Ram, Lacko, Walter, Kosakowski, Bohli and Guez should win their matches, but also could lose since these guys are all up and down players, coming off injuries and/or not great form. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 01:51 PM Udomchoke should love to play someone with the skills of Veic. He can use his court craft and smarts and run him all around. But if he does id be curious to see who won Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:00 PM Naso, but that match can go either way. Two mediocre clay journeyman. Cabal, Lacko, Burquier and I think Sijsling will beat Stebe, that would be an upset on paper. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:06 PM I think Cabal will beat Ouellette. Ouellette has no weapons. Cabal isn't great, but his serve is alright and he can do a few things on the court. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:07 PM i know its far away and thc chances of it even happening may not be that great since marius hasnt played in a while but..what who would you favor if marius and marsel meet in the final round? i'd like both wo tin..so it sucks for me...in my mind marius could take marsel out Ilhan definitely. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:09 PM Hearing Copil has been out for a long time, I erased him from the definite winner list, because Bagnis can cause him problems in being consistent and grinding/counter punching a little bit. Smoke944 08-24-2011, 02:11 PM Naso almost qualified here before, he should be a big favorite in that match. ibreak4coffee 08-24-2011, 02:28 PM Izak has a great game, when he's on. Beautiful serve and volley on grass. But he's awful if he has an offday, and I guess the score against Yang indicates that yesterday was not his day. It wasn't his day - he looked out of sorts without a doubt. Whole games would go by when he couldn't get one ball in the court. It seemed he was resigned to defeat late in the first set already - not sure if there's an injury. I dont have his serving stats, but they can't look great either and even when he was getting it in play, Yang was putting the ball back impressively. Niland-Yang will be really interesting IMO. Both weren't really tested and I imagine there will be some nice rallies between them. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:29 PM Yeah, and he has more HC experience. But he's had a poor season, so we'll see what his form is. ibreak4coffee 08-24-2011, 02:30 PM I'm going to try and make it out to Flushing again tonight after work to catch the last round of matches - if anyone wants a pic of a player let me know :) Filo V. 08-24-2011, 02:31 PM Yang is a counter-puncher and Niland is a grinder, so it will be interesting who can implement their gameplan the best. Yang has the better shots IMO. But can he finish points off is the question. Iván 08-24-2011, 02:55 PM Lisnard VS Klec How will it end? ibreak4coffee 08-24-2011, 03:09 PM Yang is a counter-puncher and Niland is a grinder, so it will be interesting who can implement their gameplan the best. Yang has the better shots IMO. But can he finish points off is the question. Yang definitely has the more fluid, dangerous game. He really wasn't tested at all yesterday though, whereas in the second set at least Niland had to work for his points. I'd give a slight edge as you say to Yang though, even if I'd prefer Niland qualify Filo V. 08-24-2011, 03:15 PM I'm going to try and make it out to Flushing again tonight after work to catch the last round of matches - if anyone wants a pic of a player let me know :) I don't really have any players in mind but I do appreciate your effort, thank you and I think that goes for everyone :wavey::) Filo V. 08-24-2011, 03:33 PM I think Lisnard will beat Klec. Good match-up. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 03:34 PM Ilhan held to love, broke, got broken after saving 4 BPs, and then broke Gawron again. Now up 4-*1. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 03:37 PM Lacko 6-1 first set over Schwank. So sad for Edu. Looking more and more like his singles career is going nowhere. ibreak4coffee 08-24-2011, 03:38 PM Its hard to believe guys like Romboli and Rivera-Aranquiz came to New York thinking they actually would qualify  madmax 08-24-2011, 03:38 PM Schwank getting routined by Lacko thus far...how far this dude has fallen - I remember him being quite a solid hardcourter few years back Filo V. 08-24-2011, 03:41 PM Both have really fallen. Edu used to do well in HC challengers, but not at the ATP level. Lacko was top 100 through the winter of this season. I think he has motivational issues. Both have top 100 talent but not the minds and in Edu's case, his fitness isn't good enough and he's injured all the time. Filo V. 08-24-2011, 03:43 PM Burquier 6-1 over Rivera-Aranquiz | |
