Does anybody know Dieter Bohlen outside of Germany/Austria/SUI?

To those who do: what do you think of him, what's his reputation in your country?

He is a super star in Germany and has had international success as a singer & producer but I'm wondering if anybody knows him in France, UK, US, Australia .........

Dieter Bohlen is one of the most successful producers in the world. He produced 18 # 1 hits in Germany till today and sold more than 160 million CDs! He was certified with gold and platinum status many hundred times. He had # 1 hits in many countries world wide like SWE, NOR, BEL etc. and Top Ten hits in FRA, UK, ITA, ESP ...

Bohlen was one half of of the pop duo Modern Talking as producer, songwriter and composer. Modern Talking belongs to the Top Ten of the most successful bands ever (like The Beatles, Rolling Stones etc.), they sold more than 120 million CDs from 1984-1987 and 1998-2003. Their songs peaked in the top ten in most European countries.

He also wrote Songs for Dionne Warwick, Chris Norman, Smokie, Engelbert Humperdinck, Al Martino, Errol Brown, Les McKeown, Bonnie Bianco, Peter Alexander, Nino de Angelo, C.C.Catch, Blue System, Roy Black, Andrea Berg, D.J. Ötzi, Marianne Rosenberg, Mary Roos, Yvonne Catterfeld, Mark Medlock, Roger Whittaker, Wildecker Herzbuben, Touché, Alexander Klaws and many many more.

Bohlen has also released five books. Two of these are autobiographical and describe his career, romantic involvements and experiences with singers. The first book was an unprecedented success in Germany. It is one of the bestselling books in history.

In 2006 a comedy movie called "Dieter - Der Film" was published and Dieter Bohlen himself released the soundtrack to that movie. Bohlen had great success with soundtracks and had the bestselling soundtrack for a German TV-series in 1989 for "Rivalen der Rennbahn". He also had a # 1 hit with "Midnight Lady" (performed by Chris Norman) in 1985 for one episode of the German crime show "Tator". The song became a major hit in central Europe.

In recent years he's got several advertisement deals and is one the best earning people in international pop business.

He has also been a judge the talent show "Das Supertalent", the German version of "Britain's Got Talent". He is the only judge to be in all the show's series. Same as in "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" - the German version of "Idol". He's in the jury for 8 straight years and had 10 # 1 hits with stars from that show.

Bohlen won many awards like the ECHO, Goldene Stimmgabel, Otto and is the only foreigner ever given the title People's Artist of the USSR (in 1989).

Bohlen is also famous in Germany for his personal life. He was married a three times and has got five children. In 1996, he married model and singer Verona Feldbusch but divorced her after thirty days, propelling Verona to celebrity status (she went on to be one of the most famous celebreties in Germany for a few years). Bohlen and his longtime friend Nadja ab del Farrag both confirmed that Bohlen suffered a penile fracture at one of their encounters. Later, Bohlen lived with the 1979 born model Stefanie Küster until 2006. They have one son, Maurice, born mid-2005. He met his current girlfriend Carina in Spain at one of the casting events for "Deutschland sucht den Superstar".

Bohlen made his Abitur with 17 and studied business economics.

But even with his wide success Bohlen is one of the most controversial people in Germany and was often critisized for his fatuitous and simple music. He was also often blamed for plagiarism but never got convicted by a German court. Since the Modern Talking comeback in 1998 he is more in the public than ever and with 57 years he is one of the brightest stars in Germany.

I remember Modern Talking...sadly. Wasn't that Germany's answer to Wham or something?

It featured two orange looking dudes if I'm not mistaken. Dieter was the blond guy, right?

Never mind Gorbachev (and Reagan), Hasselhoff singlehandedly brought the wall down (at least in his head that's what happened).

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but here I present to you the single most important moment in the history and resolution of the Cold War.

It might've been all very much different if Hasselhoff got hit by that firecracker (3.22 into the video), would've been a martyr for freedom. :worship: He should be right up there with Mandela.

Hasselhoff's producer at that time was Jack White, another German hit producer of the 80ties.

No idea but Hasselhoff just was incredible famous because of Knight Rider and then he had this massive hit with "Looking for Freedom". But that was pretty much it, he never topped the charts again.

For better or worse, in terms of global media, the US seems to produce a lot more than it consumes (so to speak).

I thought everyone alive knew Nana Mouskouri.

With 193 albums released in every language under the sun, (probably including Martian) she is hard to miss. She looks like Buddy Holly in drag.

My personal big crush was Nina and/or Frederick.

My first English teacher, a young girl who was like 16, was absolutely obsessed with Modern Talking, as were many teens in Poland in very late 80s and early 90s, I think I was able to say "you're my heart, you're my soul" before I actually learned how to say "I am a boy". Good times, good times. Pencil cases with Modern Talking, notebooks with Modern Talking, Modern Talking stickers, a Polish version of the German teen mag Bravo with a lot of Eurodance shit and sexual advice for fifteen-year-olds which caused havoc in deeply conservative Poland. Early 90s, good times, good times.

What a nightmare :bolt:

Oh no, it wasn't. It was great. My musical taste certainly evolved since then, but early 90s were pre-internet era, today in Poland (and surely everywhere else) some 12 year-olds know Sonic Youth discography by heart, but average kids back then didn't know other music than cheap German Eurodance and stuff like New Kids on the Block and absolutely loved it. I have so many fond memories. Group readings of the above mentioned Bravo magazine in school toilets as it was confiscated by some techaers because of its reputation of being "made by satan in hell". Close inspection of sexual advice pages ("He's fifteen and he touches his girlfriend THERE? Is he REALLY Polish?")... The buzzword was 'petting'. Stupid haircuts influenced by German every-day-fashion catalogues like Neckermann. My first contact with a German porn magazine in a schoolmate's basement WARNING ADULT CONTENT, we thought German cocks are different to Polish ones because they had different endings (they were erected and the skin was pulled back, but we were too young and inexperienced to know that) and we speculated that the Germans, because Germany was much more high-tech than POland, have special cock lenghteners to make them seem bigger. But then my 2 years older neighbour showed up and took out his cook proudly to show how it works and we were like "fuuuuuuuuuuck, this is amazing".

So yeah, my childhood was influenced by everything German and everything American, but the latter is a whole lotta different story. American influence very much stayed, but the German one waned since the 90s.

My first "real music" album was R.E.M.'s 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi' from 1996, still my absolute favourite till today, this was the year I atopped listening to Eurodance I think.
