From the interview with Jimmy Connors in Montreal.

Q. Coming back to what you were just saying, has money changed things?
JIMMY CONNORS: Yeah, but I'm not against that. That's what I played my whole career to bring into the game, to bring more interest into tennis, get more money into it.
Sure, there's good and bad that always comes with that. You know, to find a player who goes out and gives the kind of effort, say, for instance that Nadal does every time, plays like he's broke, that's pretty special. To feel like that's the way he is, that's what his game is, and he forgets about everything else, that's a special attitude. I like that.
That was my attitude. That's why I enjoy watching him. He'll give you everything. Doesn't matter what the score is, what round it is in the tournament, he'll give you everything he has all the time.

Q. As far as having a particular fondness for any players?
JIMMY CONNORS: I like Nadal just because of the style, his go-for-broke, give it everything he has. I don't think there's anything that can take the place of that.

Well, I feel your pain  I was like that a couple of years ago but since 2009 I have managed to shake up losses like that fairly quickly. Nowadays it takes about 15 minutes to stop caring. Not because I have become a lesser fan of Rafa but because I understand and don't expect him to win every single match/tournament. He has achieved so much and I have been a fan throughout this journey and still am. Rafa will bounce back, he always does and he will win tournaments again and again.

Still, there is a huge difference between Rome 2008 and now with Montreal. In Rome he was exhausted after 2 tournaments that he won and he had blisters that even a trainer was scared to look at.
Here he was fresh both mentally and physicly. After one month of break. And what's more he really played a good match. He wasn't struggling to much. He was in a comanding lead 61 31.
Do you remember his matches against Robredo and Almagro in Paris in 2009? He played his worst tennis ever. Yet, he still managed to win both of this matches 7/5 in the 3rd set.
In Montreal he played really good tennis against a good opponent (but nothing more), yet, he still managed to lose.

Hmmmmmmmm..... so he is mentally completely off. And I think such a long break wasn't too good for him. Of course he needed time off to heal the foot but I heard the foot is still not completely healed? Anyway, looks like Rafa needs a lot of match practice indeed.

This is a huge blow for us fans...not sure how big this lose is to Rafa, surely wouldn't have seen it coming. For Rafa to win the first and then lose is so rare..off course unless you are Nole and playing in 2011! But this is devastating and hard to accept that things will be ok in 3 weeks for the USO. I mean I am not pinning my hope on him winning again...although I'd dream and wish for that...but will he even be able to reach the final or semis?!?

Another thing is...DITCH THE GREEN!! In 2009, Rafa wore green at the ATP Finals and lost all games...has he ever lost 3 matches in a row...how often does he even lose 2 matches in a row...green is super unlucky for Rafa!! Stick to red, blue, black or even white!!

Praying for Fed to kick Nole's ass...I can't stand seeing him win anymore!

Yeah! And he cried in Bejing after he lost the semis to Rafa, that's how much it means to him to fight for his country. We are lucky Rafa got those incredible runs before superNole the real GOAT.

About wearing green - I'm not an expert and maybe he has won in green too but doesn't seem the most fortunate colour for him indeed. :o

Btw I watched the end of the match now - RAFA was serving for the match at 5-3 in the 3rd set!!!!!!!!!!!! Our RAFA, the strongest mentally. Well, or so he used to be, those days seem to be gone at least for now.  Where is our strong Rafa who would have never lost in such situation. It's not only Nole in his head which is totally f**ed up, as a tendency this year with other palyers too he soooooooooooo often loses his own serve after he has broken the opponent, time after time again, it's getting reaallllllly annoying!  I have been wondering about it since spring but now it is getting ridiculous!!!!!!!!!! :help: :help:

Ben.

The silver lining is he probably played his best tennis all year in the first set and never played badly in the match. Dodig just never let his head drop and kept attacking. Still Rafa letting a break slip in the second and twice in the third set, failing to serve the match out and losing serve in every game Dodig had a break point is a worry. Needs a semi in Cincy just to get some matches in but he has never played too well there, still he was in woeful form before USO last year and then produced one of the best tournaments of his career.

We can only hope, hat_boy, we can only hope. But this is soooo uncharacteristic of Rafa to lose his serve so often and not being able to fish off the sets or the matches. :help: :help:

I. DODIG/R. Nadal

1‑6, 7‑6, 7‑6

An interview with:

RAFAEL NADAL

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Rafa.

Q. You were up a break in the second set. You were up a break two times in the third set. In the end you lose the match. What happened?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, seriously I didn't felt that I played bad. But that's true. In the decisive moments, I didn't play well. That's the true.
He played well. Little bit of everything. Little bit of long time without competition. Little bit of I started one week and a half ago playing tennis.
He played very well, very aggressive. He didn't feel the pressure in the important moments. And at the end of the match, probably I was a little bit unlucky today, no?
I felt I played enough well to win that match. But that's tennis. The only thing I can do is congratulate the opponent and keep working for Cincinnati.

Q. Was your foot a problem today?
RAFAEL NADAL: No.

Q. Not at all?
RAFAEL NADAL: (Shaking head negatively.)

Q. Do you think it was one of his best matches?
RAFAEL NADAL: You can ask him later. I don't know. I didn't saw all his matches, so...

Q. So it wasn't him; it was you played your best, and you thought everything was right with you?
RAFAEL NADAL: I thought he played well. He played well important moments. He played without pressure. He played aggressive. His serve worked well.
I had to close the match with the 5‑3 in the third set. I had to close that match probably in the second when I was playing very well, 6‑1, 3‑1, playing very high level of tennis.
After that, the tennis is like this. You are winning without many problems, you have one mistake, and after the opponent start to serve very well, play very aggressive.
I was serving very well at the beginning of the match, and after my serve was worst.

Q. Sometimes you've won when you haven't been at 100%. You said you were happy with how you played.
RAFAEL NADAL: I didn't say I am happy the way that I played because when you are winning 5‑3 in the third, you lose the match, when you are winning 3‑0 in the third and you lose the match, I can't say I played well because when you have all of these advantage, you have to win the match.
I said, if we talking about level of tennis, especially in the beginning, the beginning of the second set and the first set, I played well. Play well is when you have to win. I didn't today.

Q. Have you ever been in a match like this when you can't explain what happened? It was an incredible match.
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, for me wasn't that incredible (smiling).
Was an emotional match and bad for me. Is not the first lose in my career when I had an advantage. That's happens. Not going to be last time for me. I have to accept these loses exactly the same like the victories and keep working.
So I didn't have a lot of time to work before here, for the foot in Wimbledon, and I have few more days now for Cincinnati. Is not a good new for sure.
Thinking positive, I will try my best to arrive in perfect conditions to Cincinnati.

Q. Does it change anything in your preparation for the US Open? Certainly you were hoping to get more matches. Are you going to do something different?
RAFAEL NADAL: What can I do? [I imagine him smiling when he says that]

Q. I don't know.
RAFAEL NADAL: You know any recommendation?
I don't know. Play Cincinnati and play the US Open. That's the only calendar for me. Any change not going to affect to my level of tennis before US Open.

Q. After a night like this, what is your psychological recovery process like? What do you do to get something like this out of your mind?
RAFAEL NADAL: You know, the worst part on a lose like this is all the work that you did, that I did the last week. I arrived Thursday to prepare well the tournament. I arrived probably today being competitive. Lose a match like this when I didn't felt that I was playing bad. We talk about tennis. That's tough because you have to start another time right now.
In the beginning, everything is hard because you think remain one week to play another time. Everything is hard. You cannot come back home, so you gonna be here.
The beginning, everything is tough. But, you know, tomorrow day off. I didn't stop playing tennis for two weeks. I will have one day off tomorrow. Friday I will be in Cincinnati practicing.
When I gonna start practicing there, I gonna try my best. I gonna try to thinking positive. :worship: I gonna try to think what worked well here, what didn't work well, and work on that. I'll work on be ready to play well in Cincinnati.

Q. Do you feel the pressure to play well in Cincinnati?
RAFAEL NADAL: I would love to do it. I don't have to. That's the sport. You don't have to play well every week. You don't have to be all the time at your best. It's not an obligation win or be in the final every week. That's what I want to do all the time. :worship: That’s what I try all the time. But is not possible, no?
This year is been fantastic year for me with tough moments. Today probably is a tough one. But worst when you lose five finals. :awww: I lost five finals this year. I'm playing well. You know, after long time without strange lose, I lose today. Let's work hard to try don't to repeat that in Cincinnati.

Let's summarize all the (serious) reasons for Rafa's FAIL:

1. star opening the thread
2. Bjorki's avatar
3. the green shirt
4. Getta (accused by star)

How could Rafa ever have a chance? :tears:

I still think star is the main culprit here. Being a devoted fan of the Evil One, she has brought Rafa bad luck, not just now but all year. I'm not even sure if anything can be done to reverse this process; it might be too late. Ostracizing star from the Nadal fanbase might be a good start though. :(
