2011 hard court swing

Okay i think this thread should suffice up until the end of the season since the surface is more or less the same on every tournament.

2010 results(defending points):

ATP 1000 Canada - R64 (10)
ATP 1000 Cincinnati - R64 (10)
US Open - R64 (45)
ATP 1000 Shanghai - R64 (10)
ATP 1000 Paris - R32 (90)

Added to these he played a few smaller tournaments which currently don't count on his ranking, but could if he improves those results:

ATP 250 - 2 QF in Vienna and Metz (45 each)
ATP 500 - R16 in Basel and Beijing (45 each)

2011 results: (compared to last year)

Canada: R16 - 90 pts. (+80)
Cincinnati - 10 pts. (0)
US Open -
Shanghai -
Paris -

So he has practically nothing to defend except 2 wins on Paris masters. This is a chance to get back into top 20 if he can convert his rising form into points. :)

So first up is Rogers cup and his part of the draw is:

[1] Djokovic vs BYE
Davydenko vs Qualifier
Seppi vs Cilic
Nieminen vs [16] Del Potro
[12] Troicki vs Qualifier
Baghdatis vs Isner
Qualifier vs Mannarino
BYE vs [5] Monfils

I would say that one win is a MUST, everything else would be a bonus. We have to see in what kind of form JMDP is.

Marin is playing tommorow, 3rd match on court 9. Play starts at noon local time so probably sometime between 3 and 4 p.m. (9-10 CET).

Bad draw for him,but it's his fault falling out of top 20 :wavey:
Wouldnt be surprised at all if he loses to Seppi, but I hope he wins a match here and in Cincy.

AncicCilic
08-08-2011, 04:40 PM
Just for the record, he is starting this part of the season at these kind of stats:

Rank: 29
Points: 1,295
W-L record: 28-15

And yes i agree, you can't expect easy opponents once you aren't seeded anymore. He will just have to kick some good opponents this summer/autumn. :wavey:

Decnet win against Seppi. Didn't see any of it unfortunately. But I think it has to be better to defeat Del Potro.
I really hope he will and shows he can play at the same level as him.

AncicCilic
08-11-2011, 09:58 AM
Yesssss! :bounce:

All he has to do today is go for his shots, be aggresive and put in first serve when it's most needed. Nothing to loose, tons to gain. Ajmo!

He was good in the first set, but made terrible mistakes at crucial points. Djokovic just too solid atm, which is no shame.
Hope he does just as well, or better, in Cincy.

AncicCilic
08-12-2011, 03:00 PM
Agreed. I'm happy with the way he played and also with his attitude. Despite what the score in second set says he didn't sink mentally.

Only bad thing was missing too many easy shots where he had Djokovic already on ropes but that can be fixed.
Now let's hope for a bit better draw in the next tournament. All in all, +80 points here so he should climb a few spots. ;)

AncicCilic
08-13-2011, 09:16 AM
Very bad draw in Cincinnati: :(

Tsonga(15) vs. Cilic
Ginepri vs. Qualifier
Qualifier vs. Nalbandian
Bye vs. Murray(4)

We can only hope Jo somehow wins against Djokovic and becomes too tired to continue his great run of form. :p

Why isn't Marin in any of the ELs after US Open? No Metz, no KL, no Bangkok...

AncicCilic
08-17-2011, 09:08 AM
Not sure but i think it has something to do with the Davis cup since Croatia plays South Africa after the US open. Perhaps he is just happy with his 2x 150 points from atp's 250 and will just play one more this season, later in October.

Anyway, yesterday serve was HORRIBLE and nothing much more to say. You can't win against top 10 player if you serve under 40% in the match. Luckily he has a very good 2nd serve so the score doesn't look that bad but he will really have to increase that percentage at the us open.

AncicCilic
08-25-2011, 07:40 PM
US open draw:

[3]Federer vs Giraldo
Sela vs Bellucci
Q vs Tomic
Harrison vs [27]Cilic

I guess 3rd round would be fine, can't expect more. Winning against Harrison and Tomic would mean he had a good tournament.

not the best match from him but he got the win in the end which is all that matters

daddy
08-29-2011, 07:12 PM
Marin was trying so hard to gift 2nd and 3rd set but Harrison was not in a mood to take it. Marin was doing well until his nervousness stepped in. All in all not a bad match, it should give him some confidence. Tomic is next.

croat123
08-29-2011, 09:35 PM
i'm just happy that he stayed aggressive. as always, the serve and the low, mid-ct forehand let him down and were the only reason this was close

really impressed with how he was able to claw back the second and third sets

AncicCilic
08-29-2011, 09:45 PM
Things that i tought were good:

- so many exits on the net, mostly successful (i think atleast 40-50 times)
- stayed aggresive and dictated most of the points
- he was very good on crucial points
- bp conversion
- number of winners
- made Harrison do alot of forced errors
- overall mentality, cheered himself on, stayed positive, reacted well under pressure

Things that could improve:

- got broken too many times
- could've won with an easier scoreline
- serve
- alot of unforced errors but it's to be expected, didn't really miss too many easy shots and that's what's important

Tomic next. :armed:

tomic will beat him easily. simply, tomic is better player. and his style doesn't suit to cilic at all. tomic can even beat federer. he can reach semis here. he has great talent and mentality. i espect alot of him in the future. especially on majors. marin...he was in same position 3 whole 3 years ago. that is pathetic. he has really tough draw. he would play vs federer after tomic.

You were preaching 'Marin the slam winner, I can tell these things' right here a year ago. Now, mug Tomic is clearly the better player. What exactly are you hoping for in term of manners? Laughing without ridicule is the mildest form of response to your blatant bandwagon hopping, if you ask me. If you wish, we can discuss your manners in all sorts of situations, but the player forum is not a place for it, just as you bandwagonning Tomic is better suited to his forum. Not too hard to learn your way around this forum.

you didnt juist say he'd lose you said he'd lose easily and that bernard was the much better player..and i struggle to see how you have drawn that conclusion

it seems like you were drawn into bernard by his wimbledon run which he quite honestly more than likely wouldnt have had if robin was healthy when he met him in the 3rd round

Just because Marin has been inconsistent for the last year doesn't mean he can't catch form and keep it up, specially when he matures some more. I for one believe real Marin is that one from USO 2009 and AO 2010 and not the one that was here lately.

Don't forget that for example he won many 5 set matches for a young player so he isn't a mental "midget" as they say. With him it's more of an confidence issue, if everything is clicking better watch out.

Anyway, so far today has been brutal, easy top 10 style. :worship:

good thing is that he is in good form from hamburg or umag. his biggest problem is that he hasn't full-time coach. he should have full-time coach, psychiatrist and coach for body condition from his 18. in that case he would achieve more to today. pity he is afraid of big wins. he can't beat federer.

im happy he won but he isn't playing well here. youzhny will rip him apart tomorrow if he doesn't play better

He has mental problems because he lost Bejing final. That is so obviously. You could see how dissapointed he was on the end of that final. He wouldn't lost in R1 in shangai if he won title in bejing and he would play way better here. Todays win is so important for his head (I hope so), he won after faced MP and was happy like he won Masters title.
But Yozhny is his black head, they are playing on Russian home soil and Youzhny is great on russian's tournaments. If Marin has self-confidence he can beat him convincingly. We will see tommorrow.

misty1
10-29-2011, 01:57 AM
well, yeah i can definately see the bejing final having an impact on him, In nearly every interview he gave there he mentioned how good he felt there and how much it would mean to him to win it and then he makes the final and blows a lead over berdych

Well done!

Last few months kinda felt like he is slowly maturing and going over some child diseases.
Hope it continues in the next year and even better play comes now when he has more confidence. :bounce:

6-4, 6-4 over milos

next up is granollers

petar_pan
11-06-2011, 09:28 AM
[5] Tomas Berdych v BYE
Marin Cilic v Fernando Verdasco
Thomaz Bellucci v Alex Bogomolov Jr.
BYE v [11] Janko Tipsarevic
[13] Andy Roddick v BYE
Milos Raonic v Julien Benneteau
Jeremy Chardy v Marcel Granollers
BYE v [2] Andy Murray

Tough draw. But he can beat of all them. He will be fresh and ready for Paris. He will probably beat Verdasco, Bedych secured his presence at MTF and Marin will have great motivation to beat him (remember how he lost Bejing final) and I think he will. After that he would play vs Tipsarevic, and he will be closer to win. In the quates he would play either Murray or Roddick. He can beat both of them.

About Valencia: he would beat Granollers if he wasn't tired. BUT Granollers plays top 10 tennis whole week (he beated Dolgopolov, Cilic, Monfils and Del Potro) and he is always real beast in Valencia. However Marin could win last two games: he had game ball at 5:5 and 2 break balls in a row at 5:6.

I think returning in Memphis was never a realistic option. Good news is that he's training with full capacity now, and will definetely play in Delray Beach, he just wanted to be 100% when he comes back.

petar_pan
02-18-2012, 12:29 AM
He will go to U.S. tommorrow (today). Actually he will be in Toronto for 7 days, he will train there with his coach. This year Bob will be his "full-time" coach, so he will be on every tournament.
After Toronto they will go in Delrey beach.
Interesting, last couple of weeks he prepared on clay because he had pain in his knees befor Zagreb Indoors. And he said he is away stronger than he use to be.

Okay, that is some good news. Let's hope he will stay healthy during IW and Miami.

And let's hope this message is correct. Last message about Zagreb wasn't.

That informatio is 100% true.
Here is the source:

That is croatian newspaper. Author of this article made interview with Marin where Marin said he is going to Toronto. If he is going there he will play at Delrey Beach for sure.
He wouldn't go in North America 3 weeks before Indian Wels if he is not ready.

He should play at Zagreb Indoors but pain in the knee came back.

I see he entered the Dallas challenger in the 2nd week of IW. Entry deadline was yesterday, he wouldn't subscribe if he wasn't fit. So that's a good sign I think.

I think it really is definite that he'll play in Delray Beach, and the tournaments that follow (IW and Miami). Signing up for Dallas means he wants to get extra match practice, considering he most probably won't make it to the 2nd week of IW.

today I had the chance to talk to Marin for a while on a one on one interview.
he is the nicest guy, really easy to talk to, full of joy and constantly laughing.

he answered all of my questions with a big smile and he is very possitive. he said the toughest thing about returning after injury is to be consistent during those off days and that he is working really hard on mentality.

he plans to keep improving during the european claycourt season too. he was feeling really relaxed and said he expected bs as claycourts to be a lot slower

I love to see Marin in this Davis Cup match, it's so visible what difference it makes when he cares. Even when he doesn't play at his best he is a threat to almost anyone. He spent 10 hrs on court in 2 days and still doesn't give and says he will fight against DelPo. :worship:

He always plays his best tennis in DC. That's the best thing I like it about him.
Pitty Karlovic didn't make a point at 4:3, 30:15 on Nalbandian's serve. He had forehand volley and missed for eanch. If he did we would probably won that match.
