yeah, I'm really happy about it cos I'll be there to see him! I think the round-robin concept is good for someone like Marat because after the Winter break he needs a few guaranteed matches to prepare him for the Aus Open. I look forward to seeing who the other players are!

An exhibition event in Perth, Australia where players by-country play mixed doubles, men's singles and women's singles. THe team consists of two players. For example: Russia will be represented by Myskina and Marat. There are 8 teams (I think) which play each other. THey are devided into 2 groups of 4 countries which play round-robin. THen they advance to semis and finals.

btw, in the battle of any two countries three matches are played.

I think Slovak Republic have chances to win the Hopman Cup. Hrbaty wins head to head with Safin 6-5 and it’s a very dangerous player. Hantuchova it’s a great player too, and Slovaks doubles team it’s very competitive. I hope to see a final between Slovak Republic and Russia.

Hopman Cup is Russia's tournament to lose. Only if Marat and Nastya have a slow start will they lose. Davenport can have a win over Myskina, but Marat is the favourite in every single match.
I don't trust Marat's H2H against lower-ranked opponents to decide the outcome of the match. I expect Marat to win Hrbaty in two easy sets.

Marat has a good history on single in hopman cup. and if he is in the same form as this year-end, he will maintain the good result. also I hold Nastya could do better than ever before. so it is a good chance to win.

as for Hantuchova... it is the chance to be back for her. Good luck to her though I do not think she could win Nastya even if she is back. :p

Some Cup news. Lindsay is out with a right knee injury and Meghann Shaughnessy will take her place.

Lindsay out of Cup
By MICHAEL PLACE
26dec04

LINDSAY Davenport's Australian Open campaign is in doubt after the world No. 1's shock withdrawal from the Hopman Cup.

Davenport will miss the round-robin event in Perth starting on New Year's Day after re-injuring her troublesome right knee during an exhibition match in the US last week.
Her manager Tony Godsick notified Hopman Cup director Paul McNamee, forcing organisers to scramble for an 11th-hour replacement.

World No. 40 Meghann Shaughnessy will join compatriot James Blake, who last year partnered Davenport in the US team which won the $1 million event.

I stole this info from Safinator. :wavey:

Russian Marat Safin also has a conflicting engagement but worked out a compromise with cup chief executive Rick Williams, which will result in a scheduling change.

Safin was told earlier this week he was to be honoured by Russia's parliamentarians at a state banquet on New Year's Eve. He did not want to show any disrespect towards his nation's leaders by not accepting his award in person and asked the Hopman Cup organisers to rearrange Russia's draw.

Considering he and French Open champion Anastasia Myskina are the top foreign drawcards, the officials reacted with alacrity. Instead of playing Italy on the morning of January 2, the Russians will instead play their first tie against Germany on the evening of January 3, allowing Safin time to fly to Perth.

Dec 30

* French Open winner Anastasia Myskina was due to arrive in Perth last night to pair with Marat Safin in the Hopman Cup.

The Russians were scheduled to open the tournament proper against Italy's Davide Sanguinetti and Francesca Schiavone on Sunday.

However, Safin has a commitment in Russia that has delayed his trip.

yes, here's an article about the schedule change

Argentina to Open Hyundai Hopman Cup in Schedule Change
28 December 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a schedule change to Group A of the Hyundai Hopman Cup Argentine World Number 7 Guillermo Coria, with teammate Gisela Dulko, will now play their opening tie against Italy’s Davide Sanguinetti & Francesca Schiavone on Sunday 2 January 2005 at 10am. This will be televised live on ABC TV from 10am (Western Standard Time) and 1pm (Eastern Standard time).

No 1 seeds Russia with newly crowned ITF World Champion Anastasia Myskina and world number 4 Marat Safin will now play Germany’s Tommy Haas and Anna-Lena Groenefeld in their opening tie. Session 4 should now become one of the highlight sessions. Anastasia Myskina has had a stellar year highlighted by her win at the French Open, reaching number 2 in the world rankings, led Russia to Fed Cup victory and capped off with being crowned ITF World Champion last week. She plays up and coming young German player Anna-Lena Groenefeld who Peter McNamara says “is Germany’s most promising young female talent for quite some time”.

Haas and Safin’s head to head sit at 2-2 and haven’t met since the 2002 Australian Open semi-final which was a long 5 setter in which Safin came back from 2 sets down to take victory and a place in the Australian Open final. Both these men have had good years, Safin rising back to number 4 in the world and Haas back up to 22 after not playing the early part of the year.

Australia’s chances were enhanced with the earlier announcement that world number one Lindsay Davenport has been replaced by Meghann Shaughnessy. This along with the early arrival of Mark Philippoussis and scintillating form of Alicia Molik augers well for the Australians who have only had one victory in the tournament’s 16 year history.

There will be no change to any Group B ties in which Australia is involved.

Guillermo Coria and Gisela Dulko are playing in their first Hopman Cup. Neither Coria nor Sanguinetti or Dulko and Schiavone have played each other yet in international tennis.

Patrons who have purchased A Reserve or B Reserve tickets to Session 2 or Session 4 can, if they so desire, exchange them for the equivalent reserve in the other session prior to the commencement of Session 2. The same seat cannot be guaranteed.

Hyundai Hopman Cup XVII, to be held from 1-8 January 2005, is the Official Mixed Teams Competition of the ITF. Zimbabwe will play the Netherlands on 1 January commencing at the special time of 3pm. Children under the age of 15 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free. The winner goes into Group B to play against Australia, USA and the Slovak Republic.

A few days ago I heard Marat wouldn't be coming to the Hopman Cup because he wasn't happy about playing on the 2nd and that he wanted to play on the 3rd but they couldn't do it because the tickets had already been sold...but looks like they've worked out a compromise...thank God!!!

Marat shoud have blown off the Russian beurocrats and went to Perth with Nastya.
She had only 20 days off and practiced to be No.1 the rest of the time. Hope Marat was atleast twice as hard working.

Government honour for Safin delays Russia’s Hopman Cup debut

PERTH: An undeclinable banquet invitation tonight from his country's parliament will delay Russian Marat Safin's start at the Hopman Cup team's event this weekend.

The world number four from Moscow will be honoured for his sporting achievements at a New Year's eve dinner, timing which conflicts with tomorrow's start of the eight-nation competition half a world away.

With Russia, also featuring French Open champion Anastasia Myskina, the top seed, an arrangement was quickly arranged after Safin was informed of his award only a few days ago.

To allow Safin time to accept the honour and make a flight, Russia's opening tie against Italy – women's and men's singles plus a concluding mixed doubles – will be delayed from Sunday morning until Monday night.

That kind of flexible timing will allow the 24-year-old to be all things to all people.

Hopman organisers were loathe to lose any more draw cards at the last minute after the pullout this week of women's world number 1 Lindsay Davenport, who suffered a knee injury during an exhibition event in the US.

Davenport, who has hinted at retirement at age 28, was replaced in the field by Meghann Shaughnessy, who will partner with James Blake.

Safin, now standing fourth in the world behind Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt, has re-established himself as a force in the game after starting 2004 at 89th after a wrist problem.

And Big Red has no complaints about how he ended the campaign in November. “Compared to where I was and where I am right now, it's like it's 85 spots I improve.

“The main goal to get back to the Top 10. I made even Top 5.”

Other players arrived in Perth yesterday, with tomorrow's to be a start a playoff for eighth position in the field between Holland, featuring Michael Krajicek, 15-year-old half-sister of 1996 Wimbledon winner Richard, and Peter Wessels.

They will play a tie against the Zimbabwe sibling act of Cara and Wayne Black, with the winner going into the round-robin draw.

Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, teaming with Dominik Hrbaty, landed in Perth yesterday after a flight from Europe on the same flight as Lucy Hopman wife of the iconic tennis coach Harry Hopman for whom the competition is named.

South American will be represented by Gisela Dulko and Roland Garros finalist Guillermo Coria, who missed much of the second half of the season with injury. – dpa

I don't have EDTV Ilhame. I have Dubai Sports, which also showed it. And I had Arabic commentary, which I didn't understand. I watched Nastya's match and Marat's match. The mixed wasn't broadcasted.

Anyway, here are my impressions on Marat's match:

He lost because he "fell asleep" or , rather, didn't wake up. Maybe it was both, in the first set and then the 3rd. THe only part of the match worth watching was the second set. That's the only set with good rallies with interesting outcomes. Marat was aggressive and everything there.
In the first set he didn't serve, didn't hit the fh, didn't hit the bh. It was completely... screwed up. he played all the groundies with half his normal acceleration in that set. Anything faster went out.

What hit me today, was Marat's FH. He had mucjh more winners with it. Had many DTL shots with it, unlike the BH, with which Marat missed 3 dtl shots in the first set and I don't rememeber him attempting it again. He miised as many shots with his Bh as with FH it seems, although there were good cross-court HBs.

Anyway, I'm not totally disappointed. If he's more focused and has sleep before the next matches he'll win them I think. He's capable of doing it in this very week because the second set was very good.

Nastya probably wouldn't lose a single match. She had twice more errors than Anna-Lena, but all of them were winners which didn't make it inside the court. She had immense amout of winners and totally dominated.

hi guys...sorry this is the first time I've been able to come online since last night's match. I was there (in the second row!) and yes, as you already know he oafed a bit...but he was just very very tired. He took a while to get going, and then in the second set he played really well...and then yes, nearly fell asleep in the third. It was really obvious haha. Even in the doubles I thought he looked like he could hardly keep awake. Next time get here earlier!!! :retard: anyway, he didn't play THAT badly and I think tomorrow against Coria he'll be fine since he's had a day off today to relax. I'll be there tomorrow too, and I HOPE for a better outcome. I took some pics from last night's match but unfortunately most of them turned out kinda blurry cos of the bloody lights and not being able to use a flash. Anyway, you can take a look if u want, link is in signature. I also noticed the many necklaces. There seemed to be heaps! One looked like it had an M as a pendant, but I could be wrong since I couldn't see properly.

Anyway, that's all for the moment. Hope to be able to bring you some better news this time tomorrow!

hi guys...sorry this is the first time I've been able to come online since last night's match.

DAVAI MARAT!!! :bounce:

I saw Marat's match against Haas, and to be honest, i don't think he is in great shape. He looked very tired during the match, but he was moving well. I don't think anyone expected Marat to loose against Tommy! But the doubles was understandable, since they haven't won a match together before...

Russia Out of Hopman Cup as Safin Loses Again
Wed Jan 5, 2005 01:49 AM ET
Top News
By Simon Cambers
PERTH, Australia (Reuters) - Top seeds Russia suffered a humiliating early exit from the Hopman Cup on Wednesday as a leg-weary Marat Safin was beaten for the second time in three days in their 2-1 defeat by Argentina.

The world number four, beaten by Tommy Haas in Russia's opening match defeat by Germany, lost 7-6, 6-1 to Guillermo Coria and Argentina wrapped up victory when Coria and Gisela Dulko beat Safin and Anastasia Myskina 6-2, 6-0 in the mixed doubles.

"It just wasn't my day today," Safin said. "I wasn't fast enough, not sharp enough.

"Gisela was even returning my serve very well which was kind of embarrassing but I'll have to live with that and get better for the Australian Open.

"He (Coria) played really well, was always running, always biting, not literally, but he was too good."

Myskina had earlier beaten Dulko 6-2, 6-1 to put Russia ahead but Safin's rustiness and some fine play by the Argentine pair secured victory for the fourth seeds and left Russia unable to qualify for Saturday's final.

The winner of Thursday's match between Argentina and Germany will decide who progresses to the final as the winner of Group A of the eight-team round-robin event.

Suffering with jet-lag when he was beaten by Haas, Safin had been hoping for an improved performance but with Coria looking close to his best, the Russian struggled to make an impression.

A few bullet-like backhands were the only signs of the Safin who climbed back to number four in the world rankings after a superb 2004, but his legs appeared heavy and his forehand offered up a host of errors.

Once Coria had taken the first set 7-4 in the tiebreak, the spirit seemed to drain from Safin and the Argentine romped through the second set to clinch victory in 70 minutes.

Earlier, Myskina was on top form as she brushed aside Dulko in just 56 minutes.

I played really well today," said Myskina.
"It was a little early start for me ...and I need to practice a lot more if I am going to play my best at the Australian Open, but everything was good."

Safin and Myskina were immediately up against it in the deciding mixed doubles match when an early break put Argentina on their way to the first set and when they broke Safin in the opening game of the second set, the result was never in doubt.

Australia play the Netherlands in a Group B match later on Wednesday.

I'm sure Marat will work his a** off next week to prepare for the AO. I just kinda feel sorry for Nastya though since she's playing so well.

No kidding. I'm glad now that I don't have coverage - I'd cry too. I don't want to slam him and I think it's still too early to speculate about AO, but yeah - the start is not encouraging at all. Let's hope that he'll get over the jetlag till 17th. Hope real hard.

in fact, I was not very disappointed after he lost to Haas on Monday. cos he was fighting then. he tried to score from his FH and volley, which are unusual for him. so it did not matter if he made some UEs. but today, he has nothing but tons of UEs. no spirit, no confidence on the court. that's not the same loss with the former one. really frustrating. only one week before AO. let's see what would happen. now we know that never count on too much on an OAF. :o

I was agry at Marat just minutes ago, but now it's just plain disappointment. Poor Nastya. Poor Marat as well. I'm sure he feels some guilt infront of Nastya.

Bad start for the year. I don't think he'll defend any of his AO points this year.

well...I am pretty pissed off to say the least...it was a disgraceful display today...Nastya played well in her singles...but Marat's match and the doubles omg I just wanted to go home...it's so disappointing. He really looked so lethargic and sluggish...and he hit soooo many unforced errors...all the time the balls were going way beyond the baseline...I wanted to kill him!!! I think they'll be on court 1 tomorrrow night...cannot believe they're out already. Judging by the way he's played here, he won't go far at the Aus Open and he as 900 points to defend there. Unless he gets his ass into shape next week, he'll have a tough job in Melbourne.

Damn, why does it have to go like this. Jetlag can be a bitch, but it's a lame excuse as he's used to it and should know how to handle it.
Hopefully he wakes up and works his ass off the next weeks. I sincerely hope his head isn't filling up with all sorts of thoughts that aren't needed.

Anybody have read some Anastasia declaration??
This is from the post-match itw (by match i mean the singles)

There were a lot of Rallies early on. She certainly put it to you early, but when did you feel that you were starting to get on top?
Actually maybe after the third or fourth game in the first set. I broke her serve and then it was a little bit easier, because I just had to hold my serve. But everything was good.

Every thing across your game felt a little better today with that match under your belt. Do you feel that is the kind of thing you need at the start of the season?
For sure. For the second match it is pretty good but I still need to practice hard if I want to play my best in the Australian Open.

An important match to win certainly for the teams cause because you need to win today to make sure that you are still a chance to make the final..
I wish Marat good luck. I know that he will do his best, and we will see what happens.

The mixed doubles you haven’t been able to win with Marat yet. It is something that you are no doubt keen to do.
I don’t play doubles very well. Maybe that is why we are losing. But I will do my best for sure.

Well done and we will look forward to that mixed doubles later on.

And this is an extract of their conference after the doubles, but she doesn't speak a lot about the Hopman Cup.

Anastasia how would you assess your game so far?
(Anastasia) In singles, pretty good. I am pretty happy that I have won two of my matches. It was good for one of the first matches. The mixed was pretty bad but, we don’t play that very often so that is ok.

Anastasia do you think the Russian women can continue their good form and one of you win the Australian Open?
(Anastasia) Well we have to; we have a lot of pressure. There are so many of us. I know it is really hard to handle all the pressure, but we all have a goal to play really well in Australia.

Do you help each other out with the pressure? Do you try to help your fellow country women?
(Marat) Women solidarity. :haha: (Anastasia) No not really. We have our own team. I have my team, Sharapova has her team. I don’t think we help each other out. It helps us play better because I know they want to play better than me so I want to play better than them.

Are you more competitive against another Russian than you might be against a French woman?
I think it is normal yes.

Marat, how about the media coverage of tennis in Russia? You are here seeded at number one but we don’t see Russian journalists here. Last year you went to the Final of the Australian open and we didn’t see too many journalists. How is the media coverage…
(Marat) Through the internet. (Anastasia) Oh it is pretty good (Marat) They have enough with the internet. They are showing all the matches, on T.V. so they don’t really need to fly to Australia to see me live. They can see me live in Moscow.

Television is ok…
(Marat) but to ask me question “how do you feel after the match?, how did you play?, how did you feel before hand?, did you move well?” these kind of question… (Anastasia) You write, they read, they write again. It goes around.
