wel''i dont know

i am not sdure how good bellucci is on grass but i know its not his favorite surface

on the other hand grigor has been spanked in his last 3 matches in a row, he cant hold serve anymore and his fighting spirit is almost non existent

Sonja1989
06-04-2011, 07:55 PM
I will support for Grigor, he needs this match much more. :wavey:

Bellucci sometimes doesn't take too serious the smaller tournaments and his worst surface.

@Misty1, he isn't too good on grass. His return isn't good enough also on clay and sometimes terrible on grass. I don't know how improved he in this surface but I remember, he played a very hard match with Fischer in last year. And he isn't too good mentally.

I seriously think Dimitrov wins this one.

LawrenceOfTennis

He has nothing to lose (ok some points) and Bellucci is really much of a clay courter. Dimitrov is a real grass court specialist, I think this will be a 2 setter if he'll be focused enough.

He really needs this match to gain some confidence. If he wins this he's got two very winnable matches until probably facing Murray in the Quarters. If he can return the ball well and get Bellucci to move side to side he's got an excellent chance of winning this one.

misty1
06-06-2011, 05:42 PM
and now he goes from 30-0 to 30-40 to open the 3rd set and double faults:o

bellucci has the early break in the decider

misty1
06-06-2011, 05:44 PM
it gets to to 40-30 with help from bellucci who double faults but he holds

2-0 bellucci

misty1
06-06-2011, 05:49 PM
and bring on the collapse

had a game point but bellucci fights it off then breaks again

and after being so good on break points through the first 2(4/4 saved) he's now ben broken in 2 of his last 3 games

can i also just say that his 2nd serve is pathetic?

3-0 bellucci in the decider

he's also earned just 1 point on return this entire set..

C'mon, the boy is trying to find his feet in the big-boy tournaments. It won't be easy, considering the current top 50. Other 'once-young-talents' (De Bakker, Cilic, Gulbis) also have had their rise and fall. I'm not saying I'm not mad/disappointed but I understand that Grigor will have to 'grow up' mentally and physically at his own pace. We'll just have to enjoy the ride, oh and the view.

RandyE
06-08-2011, 06:21 AM
How can he go from being in total control to losing five games in a row? I just don't get it. Mental toughness and the willingness to break down his opponents' weaknesses are the two things he's yet to master. Until then we'll continue seeing these sorts of total breakdowns. I hope he doesn't go the way of Gulbis and never recover from these early setbacks - he's just too talented!!

To be fair, his match play recently has been very normal for someone who is in the transitional phase in his career. He is still very young for a top-100 player, and has yet to play enought pro-level matches to build up a bank of experience to pull him through these match situations. He is obviously gifted with great technique, but is still learning the mental aspects. The facts are he was a set and tie-break up against a higher ranked player than him, but Bellucci's experience of match-play at this level meant he was able to win it. To me it looked like a very normal match of shot-making ability versus experience.
With that out of the way, he is set to play in Eastbourne next week, so it will be great for him to get some more grass court practice and match practice before Wimbledon. Also, i hope to get to Wimbledon again this year so, if it all works out, i'll be sure to grab some pictures for you guys =]

i realise i have been very irrational in saying im taking a break with him..it is just very hard when a player you like is losing so often..and crumbling when he's challenged or blowing chances to win matches

i just need to have more patience with him

kr1s71an
06-08-2011, 09:25 PM
Yes, that was a bad loss and after he was 3-6 down in the tiebreak and besides that managed to get ahead at 7-6 and serving for the match I was sure that the match was over, but then ... He has to start fighting even harder in those matches. When he lost the 2 set he should of play even better in the third just to get the win, but he went down and he lost a match that was his. I'm angry not for the loss, but for the chance he missed. Now Bellucci is in the third round and I'm sure that if Grisho had won he would of gone at least that far in this tournament. But it's over so lets hope he will have a good draw at Eastbourne and he will win some matches before his favourite tourney Wimbledon. Good luck!

It's time for Eastbourne. Here he should finally stop the losing streak. He will play versus Daniel Evans in the first round. Here is Grisho's quarter:

[3] Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) vs. [SE] James Ward (GBR)
Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ) vs. Yen-Hsun Lu (TPE)
Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) vs. [wc] Daniel Evans (GBR)
Qualifier vs. [6] Kevin Anderson (RSA)

Grisho will play doubles as well. That's good! He need more matches before Wimbledon. Here is his part of the draw:

[1] Rohan Bopanna /Aisam-Ul=Hag Qureshi (IND/PAK)
Pablo Andujar / Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP)

Grigor Dimitrov / Andreas Seppi (BUL/ITA)
Carlos Berlocq / Franco Ferreiro (ARG/BRA)

It is hard to say so this is his best surface even if he had won the junior Wimbledon. He considers hard corts his favorite.

The problem is Grigor has been in a litle mental slump recently with few loses in R1. What could be tricky in the match with Evans is the fact Grigor has two very bad loses from him something like - 6-0 6-1 and 6-2 6-3 as a junior. Of course that was a long time ago, but there is this factor when someone comes into your mind...Hopefuly he is ready for a revange now and will pull this out! Good luck!

His current form is just awful. I just can't believe how he played all his matches since Munich. That's just awful. His game is gone somewhere and he can't find it. I don't know what is the reason but McNamara isn't making any difference for sure. I smell another coach change soon. The question is where is the problem in Grigor's head, his coach or both?

but he's given up only 3 points on return..and 2 of those were off double faults, look at these stats so far:

42% first serve(not great)

100% first serves won

73% 2nd serves won

5 aces, 2 double faults

it seems from the stats anyway that he came to play today

nadejda
06-16-2011, 09:49 AM
that is true, but given the fact he is not seeded in Wimbli and can draw everybody in R1, even Federer or Djokovic - maybe is better to keep playing as much as he can here. The two matches yesterday last only 2 hours for both, and doubles is not so exhosting to play, especially on grass - only serve and volley most of the time.

Anyway, if he loses his both matches today, it will still be a great tourney for him!

Here's a link on Stebe, everyone. http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/St/C/Cedrik-Marcel-Stebe.aspx?t=pa

He's the same age as Grisha and I think was a top5-top10 Junior back in Grigor's junior days. He was one of my favorite juniors and had a lot of promise back then but then he sort of disappeared and I forgot about him. Looks like he started this year off with a couple of futures, then moved up to challengers, and has recently been trying to qualify for atp events.

my prediction: Dimitrov beats Stebe in four sets.

Grigor plays the 4th match on court 10 tomorrow. My plan is to go see him so hopefully i can bring you guys some news and pictures when i get back. The only trouble is the match is scheduled at the same time as the Dolgopolov/Gonzalez match which will take priority for me, Gonzo doesnt have too many years left on the circuit and this may be my only chance to see him play on an non-show court so i hope to see a couple of sets. Hey guys =]

So luckily for me, Grigor's match was held very late today, meaning i got to watch all but the last couple of points of the Gonzalez/Dolgopolov match and still get to see the Dimitrov/Stebe match from the first point. (BTW Gonzales is AMAZING to watch!)

But before i say what i thought about the match, i should say that although the sun shone most of the day today, it was very windy and at times quite cold. All the matchplay i saw involved a higher than normal number of service errors, slice backhands getting pulled in/out if court and lobs that could land pretty much anywhere in the whole of SW19! And thats from experienced match players like Gonzalez, Gilles Simon, Juan Monaco etc. There was also a fair share of players getting cold and tight where there were delays for whatever reason.

As for Grigor, the match was much higher quality than the match statistics suggest. He seems to be developing a real agressive baseline game, hitting hard, flat, powerfull and pretty consistant ground strokes (bearing in mind i just moved over from the Gonzalez/Dolgopolov match, that's saying something!). He was also using a mean backhand slice to great effect moving Stebe side to side and taking away his rhythm, and also buying himself some time when out of position. The serve was also looking HUGE, flat in the corners or out wide with slice were both landing fast and accuratly.

He had a couple of his 'Dimi-Blips' for sure, it is perhaps something we have come to expect a little, the good news is he was able to fairly comfortably fight his way back after them. From what i could tell, and this is by no means fact, is that he seems to get slightly rattled when missing a short string of what should be comfortable shots. I think that maybe that when the doubt and negativity arrives with those shots, his shot selection generally (which for the most part, is very good) goes into meltdown, and he find himself on the wrong part of the court doing the wrong thing. Then he makes a couple of those 'wrong' shots to work, regains confidence and positive attitude, and gets back into his normal rhythm.

The first set seemed like both players were hitting within their abilities, trying to find the weak points in each others games, trying to push for errors rather than outright winners. Grisho was playing alot of backhands, and Stebe was having to dig up alot of low slices. Both players were also running and defending really well, Stebe particularly looked like he was giving everything he had in that department, retrieving all but the rare winners. That all means that the points were generally quite long, normally ending in errors, which is why the statistics look like they do. He did have a Dimi-Blip about half way through the first, but recovered it with some really high quality tennis in the last 2 games of the first set.

Second set was in reality closer than it looked, the big points were just being played a touch better by Stebe, Grisho's form deserting him a couple of times when he needed it. He stepped back up though and at the tail end of the set, i think serving to stay in the set, Grisho hit a huge forehand winner that caused Stebe to slip and hurt his ankle. Cue the medical staff and much oohing and ahhing from the crowd, Grisho taking to the court for a little bit of football skills to keep himself warm! After this, Stebe understandably had a few shakey games. Grisho made the most of this with keeping his game solid and playing a couple of extra drop shots to keep Stebe running. The first was dug back by Stebe, Grisho chasing it back to the baseline and just managing to spin round to hit a forehand winner. The second, Stebe hit a near perfect lob which had Grisho charging back behind the basline, in full slide heding towards the back wall, he managed to flick the racket under the ball about 6 inches off the ground for a slice lob winner. Needless to say the considerable crowd (the only match being played by this time) went pretty crazy! Its when he plays points like that that you can see the bigger potential in him. It was something a bit more than just a really good tennis player and a great one.

The third half-set, i'm amazed they played at all. It was already 9pm, cold and really quite dark. I presume the umpire thought that with Grisho playing so well and Stebe apparently compromised, the 3rd set could be wrapped up quickly. Stebe went for a comfort break though, and this apparently fixed his ankle, haha. The hitting in the 6 games of the 3rd set was superb, as several members of the crowd commented. Both players hitting skilled and accurate ground strokes, and mixing up with well timed drop shots. The rallies were long too, with a couple going over 20 shots, unusual for grass but testament to how well both players were defending.

All in all, and all things considered, i was impressed by how he was playing, and his shot making ability and movement, it appeared to be a real step up from how he played at the Australian Open. The only criticism i has is that he could get a few more returns in play, he seems to like to get an agressive return on serves, which does work well when it works, it just doesnt get very high numbers. But really, he has all the shots, he will naturally get stronger over the next couple of years, and with some work on consistency and mental strength, he reall looks set to make an impression on the tennis world to me.

Shame they couldnt finish it there, would have loved to see him win (he retired last time i saw him play here in 2009), but 2 sets up and on serve in the third, its looks good for his first Wimby-Win!

I got to go sleep now, i was up at 6am and didnt get back until 11pm! So pics i will sort out tomorrow, as i think i took hundreds over the day :S haha. Sorry its a bit of a read but im still excited at all the tennis i got to see, hehe, hope you guys enjoyed it =]

thanks for the report, good to hear he's playing well and not like the stats would suggest..the stats would definately suggest a hot mess so your report is much appreciated

thanks, mephi. it's clear that the biggest problems for grisho are the mental strengh and his returns. if he manages to make his play more consistent and with less swings, he will start beating top 20 players. but i believe it's all to come

Good move to post this here and not in the GM. Call you crazy would have been the least :).
I too have fate and think that with Grigor's 'A' game and little help from the Frenchman impossible is nothing :)

Phew!

Uploaded a few pics in the pictured thread. Took nearly 400 photos over the day so it took some sorting!

Grisho has a chance against Tsonga. Tsonga often has huge mental lapses where he plays really badly, sometimes not picking his form back up at all. If Grigor can hold his own and take advantage of those moments from Tsonga, then for sure he has a chance. It will be very tough though so hopefully he can take some confidence and inspiration from todays win.

Also, thanks for the kind words guys!

He definitely has a good chance to take this one. He needs to get off to a good start and be aggressive on the return. Very excited for this opportunity on Court 1.
