Decent start, even though the score was close he was never under any pressure in rallies. He served well, decent at the net, a few too many errors and his return should improve as the week goes on as he looks to be more aggressive with it than on clay. Don't want any early five setter at Wimbledon this year against any big servers.

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=6641205

LONDON -- Just three days after winning the French Open for the sixth time, Rafael Nadal (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=261) began his preparations for Wimbledon with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=1517) in his opening match at Queen's Club on Wednesday.

The top-seeded Spaniard was never at his best but broke in the opening game of each set to beat his 168th-ranked opponent comfortably and move into the third round.

While Novak Djokovic (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=296) and Roger Federer (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=425) both pulled out of their scheduled Wimbledon warm-up events this week, Nadal opted to play despite the short turnaround after the French Open.

It was midnight when Nadal returned to his hotel after beating Federer on Sunday for his sixth title at Roland Garros. After a few hours' sleep, he was up early on Monday for a photocall at Disneyland Paris before heading to London later the same day and straight to the practice courts at Queen's Club.

There wasn't even time for a glass of champagne to celebrate matching Bjorn Borg's record for French Open titles.

"To celebrate the victory, I'm going to have time later," Nadal said. "I have to be focused on the grass-court season." :rocker2:

Nadal's movement was often awkward on the grass Wednesday, and he let out a yelp of frustration at 3-2 in the second set when a routine forehand drifted into the tramlines. :awww:

Ebden, playing only his 11th match at this level, went on to earn his one and only chance to break serve in the match, but Nadal found a big first serve when it counted to weather the threat.

"It's impossible to be playing well the first day," said Nadal, the 2008 Wimbledon champion. "The energy is not in the perfect condition right now but I'm here to try my best as usual.

"I'm here because I love this tournament ... but at the same time, it works for me to try to start to have the feelings on grass. Sure, my conditions are not perfect because I feel everything (his muscles) a little more tighter than usual," he said.

Nadal, who will face Radek Stepanek (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=300) of the Czech Republic in the third round, was kept waiting in the locker room on Wednesday by several rain delays -- and a three-set match between second-seeded Andy Murray (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=235) and Xavier Malisse (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=239).

Now I'm getting worried with all of you saying Rafa will lose in QF...honestly, strategically I think it might be good for Rafa to get some play and rest before Wimbledon but I have a ticket for the final and sure want him playing!

It would be good for Rafa to gain more points to stretch the lead he has over Novak...also more titles equals more records...he will be tied 2nd or 3rd in no. of ATP 250 titles if he wins this. I do wish he will try his best and aim to win it as opposed to just get a 2-3 match practice.

I would have said Rafa showed good progress from yesterday to today up until that brain fart, let's hope that is all it was. If he wins tomorrow I think he will go onto to win it though, would be unwise to lose to either Andy in the final before Wimbledon.

What an epic choke. Not impressed at all with his serve. I expected to gain more advantage with it on grass.

I hope that Rafa's rather mediocre display on grass so far will make him push forward in this tournament a bit more.
Tomorrow is a bit crazy..he has a singles match 3rd on Central court and then back to back doubles 4th and 5th on Court 1 (if he wins R2 doubles)...I hope that doesn't mean Rafa will just can it tomorrow.

I agree hat__boy if Rafa wins tomorrow's singles match then we will try to go al the way. I think the commentators said that at the moment he is just practising and not pushing himself very much but if he gets into the SF then his competitive spirit will kick in and he will go for the title. My wish is for Rafa to go for the title and not have to use too much effort :D

Didn't see the last three games or so as Eurosport switched to Ward/Mannarino but before that Tankdal looked completely disinterested in the match after he got broken in the second. Hope he gets enough rest for Wimbledon now, thought he played decently for the three matches, showed some really nice touches at the net, a few stinkers he needs to cut out though. Really needs to work on his return too.

Rafaaah
06-10-2011, 07:51 PM
thanks star...I should learn never to get sf or f tickets for queens cos Rafa never tries to win it.

I thought he was a bit disinterested thru out the match..and he won the 1st set more because of Tsonga's mistakes. I thought seen as he has won the forst set, surely he'll just wrap it up quickly with another break and taking the 2nd set. As soon as he tanked the 2nd set I knew what was coming. Just annoying!! Don't even want to imagine what his doubles score will be..may even be a W/O!!

Sorry if you think it's a waste of money but the sf lineup is not that bad, both Andys and in-form Tsonga are good on grass, and the new UK guy Ward. So I hope you'll still enjoy your weekend at tennis.

It was ridiculpus to lose to Tsonga, could have won the semis vs Ward too and get a chance for another Queen's title. Doesn't happen every year. Tired my a**! Oh yes he just had to go back to Mallorca fishing for a few days.

Thanks, yeh I know the quality of players and the fact that there are 2 british players in a british grass court event is pretty special, but my love is for Rafa. With Rafa, Delpo, Nole and Nando..even pretty Feli, I thought I'd bound to see 1 or some of my favs...but they are all out. Talk about bad luck!

Strategically I think Rafa did the right thing but I always want him to win and see him lift trophies and this one he clearly can do. If I didn't have tickets I wouldn't be this bothered about a strategic loss.

I did love seeing Rafa play more at the net, I think he ca do so even more though. Fingers crossed for Wimbledon, hopefully the focus will be more on Fed and Murray...and Rafa will come from behind and take the title,,once again!! :cheerleader:
