i've said this before the tournament and i am going to say it now. rafa is going down on sunday. this is my last wish for the mighty feds career, this is his one last achievement he has to complete. fuck the olympic gold, fuck the calendar slam. this is the one and only final stand fed has to do. he owes it to all his fans.

With this win, Roger proved he is the king. However, the matchup in the final with Rafa is a tough one for him to win. It's been for years. If Rafa gets this next slam, he will be closer to surpassing Roger's GS record. Ironic but Roger may have helped Rafa pass him. Of course, he could always win the final but after 4 hours of play tonight and match ups in the past with Rafa,....

What do you guys think?

(Winning more RGs titles than Borg was more or less essential for Rafa. I mean even with 16 slams its important to have the most number of one of the slams, and for Rafa that's Roland Garros. So it is important for Rafa's legacy that he ties Borg now, while he's young)

06-03-2011, 07:58 PM
Rafa might not get to 16 Slams, but even if he does he won't be close to Fed in weeks or years at #1. That's worth a lot too. I think at this point Rafa will go down as clay GOAT and at-best be an equal partner in the GOAT discussion with Fed and Sampras (and Laver for those who argue him). The stronger Rafa's argument gets, the weaker it makes Fed but the stronger it also makes Sampras's.

Finally, after more than two years another Fedal GS final! And it could be the last, right where we had our first five years ago. I think it's totally 50/50, Federer is playing the much better tennis, will be sky high on confidence and has the huge weight off his shoulders of already owning a RG title, but the history against Rafa on clay is against him. I say Fed to surprise many and take it in 4.

Rafa needs to win at least another 2 slams this year, i think he might tie Federer. Rafa is actualy going to find it much harder to play when he's older compared to Federer since he relies more on physical speed and strength.

(I doubt Rafa will accept retiring on 16 slams. Will power is a big reason for Rafa's wins, so I think he'll make sure he wins more than Federer. Hard to predict how many weeks at number one, but he already has 100. At the very least he has a good shot at the record for total weeks at number one + two combined)

Rafa in 4 is a good call - that has been the result every year apart from 2008.

Expect the following:

- Massive moonballing of Roger's B/H

- Roger somehow managing to generate BPs for himself but then dumping lame B/H returns into the bottom of the net. BP conversion against Djoko was something like 3 from 18.

- Nadal winning every single one of the big points.

- Roger trying to fight for two or three sets but his head eventually dropping.

I will switch the TV off after Nadal takes the first set or, if Roger takes the first, after Nadal takes the second.

It is Roger's fault for consistently losing to mugs - if he hadn't dropped to world no 3 he would have had a chance of Djoko taking out Nadal for him, rather than taking out Djoko for Nadal.

Nadal will likely play very well on sunday. if so, Fed will not win, book it. he just does not have the needed consistency from the back. federer will win this. he is a man on a mission.
nadal makes errors at critical times and these lighter balls gives federer's serve a big boost.

if djoker cant stop feds serving, nadal has zero chance.

i pick federer in 4 sets.

if the weather is rainy/heavy/slow it favours fed because the ball doesnt kick up high enough on feds BH.

nadal is still ratteled from losing 2 clay finals, that will sting.

People are underestimating Federer like crazy here.

Before the tournament, I would've agreed with them. Just looking at current form, it's a whole different story. Nadal is very breakable, Federer is serving great. He'll walk away with at least 1 set (see Madrid), maybe 2, and he could very well win 3.

I think this will be their best Roland Garros match, and it will be a typical Fedal final classic. I am going with Rafa to win obviously, because I have faith he'll pull through, and I'm expecting a scoreline like 1-6 6-3 7-5 2-6 6-4 for Rafa. HOWEVER, if Nadal finds his clay greatness, he'll dominate Fed in a routine three set match.

Come on Rafa, do it and grab your 10th slam.

Nadal will likely play very well on sunday. if so, Fed will not win, book it. he just does not have the needed consistency from the back. Nadal will play to Feds backhand and it will crumple sooner or later. We have seen it a million times... he may sneak a set but I have low hopes that anything great happens for Fed when he plays Nadal.

it sucks man. Im not a fan of fed or nadal (just like both of them, but not a die-hard fan), i just hate watching this match-up. Always the same bullshit. Feds playing nadal... O SNAP, FED HAS A CHANCE, HE MIGHT BREAK NADAL! Match ends with a shank, fed is 3/2000000 break point opporunities, nadal is like 3/3 or 4/4

I think Federer has a chance, this tournament he is playing really great and his serve seems to be very impressive. I can see this final match be similar to Wimbledon 2009. Even if Federer is playing great - he is definetely in best form since that GOAT-performance in London at WTF 2010, even that he is really in great form - lost only 1 set in his way to final - 1 set in 6 matches on clay and still people are saying Nadal in 3 or 4 because of the match-up. The same was in 2009 Wimbledon, besides that Roddick was in great form everyone was saying that FED in 3,4 Roddick canīt beat him and so on and we had that day 5setter - which Andy could win and probably should win. So not to throw away Federerīs chances, before we see 1st set of that final match, i hope Roger will surprise and take this in 4, especially if he serves like today and will play such great volleys and on net.

I just think the match-up with Rafa is more difficult than it is with other players for Roger. But Roger sure looked like a warrior at the end of the match today.

I never said Roger would beat Rafito. I picked Rafa in 5. I just think to say Roger isn't going to get a set at the freaking French Open final at this point in his career is not realistic either.

Now... yeah Rafa might might take it in 4...but I really think Roger has it in his mind to challenge Rafa. It seems to me Roger likes spoiling the party. He spoiled Nole's :hysteric:, and he just might get close to spoiling Rafa's, too.

And yeah, I would imagine Rafa's camp is a lot happier with Roger in the final, but then again.. just by observation I don't think Rafa is celebrating a victory quite yet.

And yeah, I agree Rafa came in the bridesmaid to Nole this claycourt season, so it's not like he was out of the picture. My point is though that Rafa is not invicible either. It can happen.

I still favor Rafa due to his past success, the match-up as well as person preference. But I'm not going to be shocked if Roger manages to win--let's put it this way.

just because its a simple tactic doesnt mean it cant be smart.

Only on MTF would a player being able to repeatedly outdo another player thanks to one pretty basic strategy be considered disparaging to the winner. Nadal's FH to the BH is tough for Federer just like Federer's jesusserve and penetration of the FH wing is tough for Nadal. They've both had numerous victories over the other, let's just see who brings it on the day.

Fed has huge pressure in the final. After beating Novak, people expect him to play the same way and finally beat Nadal at RG. If he fails again his legacy will always have this huge asterisk. Nadal is confident, playing freely and with no pressure. He feels comfortable playing finals against Roger.

no need to dig up this post.

you are clearly on your knees and praying hard.

here is a clue:

fed has ZERO chance on sunday.

Yep. 0 CHANCE! He maybe should not even show to play on those odds. But this is a sport, no? And he just beat the best player in the world, right. Didnt most people say he had 0 CHANCE to beat Nole as well. Well looks like he has a chance!!!!

Wrong. It will still bounce high enough to get Federer to shank like crazy. Another routine win for the Spaniard.

And jinxes don't work by the way.

You are wrong! Slower conditions on clay have always helped Federer. He's always had great results at Hamburg, where he beat Nadal in the final there one year. Very cold and wet conditions. Learn your facts bud!

I love your optimism but statistics don't lie. If Federer can't beat Nadal on grass how could he even have a chance on clay. I like watching finals without knowing the outcome in advance but Nadal-Federer finals take away the element of surprise and excitement. Even when Federer starts well you always know that Nadal will grind him down in the end.

clay warrior is not going to let it get that close.

its 4 sets at best while he gets his teeth into the match and also starts to get a decent read on fed`s serve.

my guess is that nadal may get it done in 3.

Miracles do happen but not when Nadal plays Federer. Nadal played a marathon against Nando but came back the next day to beat Federer on his favourite surface back when Federer was still in his prime. I rest my case.

plexicushion is not the roger favourite surface!!!

it`s a slow hard court, rebound ace was better for roger, the new surface it`s very slow and with a high bouncing.

nadal never defeat roger in his peak on grass or hard courts in slam finals , the peak roger was 2004-2007, in 2008 wimlbedon roger was far of his peak and was an horrible year and roger was sick too and the grass was more slow than in 2007...

but in this roland garros final, nadal will win for sure but roger show that this is the goat and defeat nole, rafa can`t defean invictus nolņe

How depressing to have this tedious boring predictable inevitable-victory-for-shit-anti-tennis match-up at R.G. again! Put it this way: I love tennis, I love Federer, & I love Roland Garros - & I am not even going to bother watching this shit. If by some miracle I hear Federer has won, I will leap to India in one bound, tear off Start Da Game's head, & shove it up his stinking arse screaming, "How does THAT feel biatch?"

Having said that, I am sure this match will be competitive. But that will just make the inevitable result all the more painful.

Enjoy fluking your 10th slam, Nadull. It will be your last.

I think it will be Nadal in a tight 4 setter, somewhat similar to the 2006 final, but tighter.

Nevertheless, Federer has been playing amazingly well and if there is one last shot at beating Rafa at Roland Garros, then this is it.

Federer certainly deserves another slam, but it will be up to an amzing performance to see him win this one, but I would not be dissapointed if he does.

As was said, tennis is the winner, enough with the stupid bitching, moaning and fingerpointing.

haha sophocles, you need to calm down. I can understand the frustration of federer consistently getting his ass whooped to nadal (and even more is the fact that he always has a chance to win the match, but royally fucks it up).. but lets be realistic here.

Nadal throws at federer cyclones of death to his backhand. LITERALLY these fucking topspoin balls murder federer. It is like trying to wrestle with a guy who is 200 lbs heavier than you. Fed stands no chance imho. I would not even trust fed to win this even if he was to win the first two sets

to be honest, i think fed wanted nole mainly because he wants to instill fear in nole. If nole gets the feeling that
'WOW, i played my Agame, and lost to feds A game" it might keep djoker from beating fed at slams all the time. Fed already knows he cant beat nadal, so thats a foregone conclusion. Just hope that nadal is eliminated before he makes a final.

And more importantly, fed wanted to make history. What better way to do it than end two of the greatest streaks of all time?

As much as I want Roger to win, i think Nadal is a worst matchup for him than Nole.

As much as i Want Roger to win, I think Nadals confidence is on the rise after the last two matches, and facing Roger rather than Nole is only going to help him feel more confident.

That said, i think the only way Roger can win is having his first serve % above 63% .. and improoving his BP convertion.

May sound uthopic to think that will happen. Then again is Federer. You just Cant count him out.

I want roger to win, but odds say probably rafa will take this one.. 4 sets perhaps .. I still hope for the miracle!

Injuries and loss of motivation. We've seen the former in 2009 and the knee problems could always return. We've also seen the signs of the latter where Nadal doesn't seem to give a shit in some of his matches.

Obviously the motivation will be super high to tie Borg and win his 10th slam on Sunday now that he's in the final, but what can we expect after (if he wins)? I think he can get it together for his favorite slam in London, but what about defending USO? It's probably very tempting for a guy who's a legend already, makes tens of millions per year and has most of his life to look forward to at only 25 to think about retirement. Judging by some of his interviews in the recent months, I would not be surprised if he retires at 27-28.

win or lose, i think fed will take positives out of this tournament. Fed will most likely lose to nadal, but he might push nadal to 4 sets and even a tiebreaker in the 4th. If fed plays decent against nadal, than watch out. Fed might get on a roll for USO/WIMBY/AUS... he will believe that "hey if i can beat this djoker, and push nadal on clay, than i can win wimby/uso"

That imho should be feds goal.

Unless, of course, nadal turns into an animal come wimby
