I can see this happening, Koellerer walks in the players lounge, Michael Corleone style:

:secret:

"Hey, Starace old buddy, I need you to lose the match to this (WC) Tom, my consigliere, where is my briefcase, here old Bracci, I already got you first class tickets and your account set up for your cash upon losing, It will be up on your swiss account. It will be good business son"

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xvxqzVnH_aw/TJv8aUxfHJI/AAAAAAAAABo/b5g-HGkvd4M/s400/the+godfather.jpg

Didn't you guys read the report. It wasn't just his match fixing, the main problem seemed to be him trying to influence other players to fix as well, making a mafia out of it. And is really dumb for someone like Koellerer to think he would get away, having so many enemies, thinking no one wouldn't blow him out. He is the wrong Mafia organizer. :haha:

Bloody ATP being spineless morons yet again and making Dani the scapegoat because he's a lower ranked player and they've had it in for him for ages...

This won't change anything in the general scheme of things... how about they ban Chela for life.. player in the QF of a slam gets banned.. now that might actually stop players for a while.

If it's true he ate this LIFETIME ban basing on "rumours" and possibly market's reaction to a player injury... then... wow...

I don't say he's innocent, just that it totally makes zero sense from the legal point of view. My dad was a solicitor in a process where people were packed to jail for years for selling drugs also based on rumours and the witnesses got also their own sentences shortened for giving other names (as proofs were showing, they were purely lying, but it needed higher instances and a few years for the judges to finally admit the obvious). There's a strong tendency here to sentence people so the prosecutors and police have better stats.

From what we hear so far coming from press, the level of this whole investigation combined with a harshest possible punishment just STINKS.

I really wish this went to a normal court and he could afford a lawyer for the process.

Nieminen I've never heard anything remotely dodgy with. Koellerer was the underdog, but market went against him:

Still, even if true, that's nothing to do with Nieminen. His opponent just threw the match.

I know for a fact that most bookmakers accept bets from players in team sports when they bet on their own team. Even though large bets in lower leagues would probably not be accepted.

Having said that, I dont think tennis players should be allowed to bet on their own matches. Imagine the temptation to post fake injury news on your blog or to call the trainer after 2 games just to inflate the price...

Lausanne, 23 March 2012 - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rendered its decision in the arbitration between the Austrian tennis player Daniel Koellerer and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), International Tennis Federation (ITF) & Grand Slam Committee. The CAS has confirmed the decision of the Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer (AHO) to rule that Daniel Koellerer be permanently ineligible to participate in any event organised or sanctioned by any of the four tennis governing bodies: ATP, WTA, ITF and Gran Slam Committee. However, the CAS has decided to set aside the fine of $100,000 which had been imposed on the player.

That would induce players to do all kinds of corrupt shit, like spreading false injury rumours or pretending to be completely out of form one tournament and suddenly try their very hardest in the next match. Plus players often have insider information about their opponents.

Let's just say that the ATP could afford double checking on the integrity of their players, especially the better ranked ones, on a financial and informational level. First of all betting companies have a deep protocol by themselves, let alone the ATP.

I don't know much about betting, but I'm guessing these companies don't like being played for fools and they're not in business so they can lose money. Betfair would report you to the ATP themselves.
