:yeah: Kezzi. Great title.

Hopefully he does well enough in Queen's to get prepared, more importantly is a good draw (please, tennis god). He's currently at 16, so the chance of him remaining at 16 for seeding and actually ends up as 16th seed is quite high. However, looking at the players at 17-24th ranked (DelPo and Nalby :scared:), I think 9-16 ranked players maybe easier to play against at the moment . And lots of dangerous floaters, Dr Ivo/Isner to name a few... ah, well, we'll see.

Allez Gilles, hopes he mows the lawn/wipes the floor ;) with the competition .

Love the thread title Kezzi! :) I hope it brings him luck ;) I'm with you lala, kind draws would be lovely!

My favourite time of the tennis year :D I may even be going to Wimbledon this year if i'm lucky! :D I would go to queens too but it's right in the middle of my final exams  it's hard knowing all my favourites will be playing just two hours away and I can't go, it's tempting, but i really shouldn't. (Like lala I have never seen Gilles irl :p) I won't be moaning about tv coverage with these tourneys though :woohoo:

Allez Gilles!! Let's start with a title!! .. too much to ask? :p

Hopefully Gilles can make a deep run this year.

Draw for Queens is up. Gilles pulled a dangerous floater in the third round - Delpo!! It's a really strong draw so I guess nothing would have been easy.
Possible second round meeting with Gulbis, shouldn't be a problem..
I love it when Gilles gets byes :p
Allez Gillou!

id like to see him and adrian in the 2nd round..as much as it means adrian would have to beat ernests and i do hate that part..

but adrian likes the grass right? so it could be an interesting match

About Mannarino in grass, i dont think he is very good on grass, in 2010 he has Q3 in Wimbledon as best result( l. to Huta Galung) and SF in Nottingham CH(l. to Berankis). In 2009 qualified to Wimbly and lost in R1 and advanced to Q3 in Queens and QF in Nottingham. I think it should be a routine win for Gilles, but Mannarino is french, and Gilles struggles against them, but he defeated Chardy last week in RG.

Offtopic: why does Gilles seem to struggle when playing people from his own country?

Just been watching Queens, cameras have been on Murray on the practise courts and Gillou is on the one behind. Seems to be sharing a court with Delpo, Stepanek and Turnsunov (i think) plus all their coaches...crowded court!! He looked happy :p

Allez Gilles, defeat Mannarino and play well. Also if he gets past Delpo the draw is open, the QF would be against Ward or Querrey, which comes in a terrible form. Wawa was upsetted by Ward

Silver.

Grrr, Gillou 4th on court 1. No stream. Ah well, good luck to him against the young frenchie, Mannarino has been a bit variable lately, I think a Gulbis win, however, isn't that threatening :p. But we shall see, Allez!!

Battle of the light-weights ;). Adrian same height as Gilles and 4kg lighter according to his ATP bio.

Too bad no stream, I would love to see these 2. Flyboy said Adrian is a good grass player, I have no idea cos I never saw him play on grass. Anyhow, Allez Gilles!

Another rain delay. They're still only on the first match on court 1, Gilles may not be able to finish his match today depending on the length of the others.

Edit: it appears his match has been moved to court 2, he is on after Nalby

Silver.
06-08-2011, 07:38 PM
Adrian has lost his two previous tournaments against Rufin and then Bohli, but beat Gulbis comfortably. I have seen him play brilliantly though (Ferrer 6-0 set). Everyone was slating Gulbis for another loss, but who knows, Mannarino may be great on grass. This is the difficulty with no streams. It's Gilles first match back on grass, whereas Adrian has had a match, plus he's a French compatriot - not a good combo.

Has anyone kept up with the breaks, I haven't been watching the SB and i'm really confused! Haha.

Silver.

lalaland
06-08-2011, 09:28 PM
OOP tomorrow.

His R2 match is 2nd match on Court 2, and then the winner will play DelPo 3rd match on court 1, not before 3pm. Which just means whoever wins won't even need to warmup for his R3.

misty1
06-08-2011, 09:32 PM
what the hell kind of fucked up scheduling is that? if the winner is going to have to play twice then they should be on some court first

lalaland
06-08-2011, 09:34 PM
It's like a tradition that they don't start a day with a suspended match, it's always going to be scheduled the 2nd match. I imagine the logic is that the condition needs to be as similar as the day before and so the ground needs to be already played on when they restart their match? I don't know, I'm just guessing.

DelPo has a double match to play after his R3 match, so they have to schedule the R2 and R3 match as close as it is right now. However, it's not necessarily a disadvantage. They have to warmup for a match anyway, so just see it as a warmup session which happens to be a best of 1 real match ;).

Silver.
06-08-2011, 09:45 PM
Urgh. Not even televised if he beats Adrian. And I do not have high hopes for him against Delpo, if he gets there. Guess i'll have to wait two weeks to see Gilles on TV  :p

I don't think they have any logic. :cuckoo: Last year when I was there, they stopped the Clément/Mahut double because of darkness on Monday night. Then they rescheduled it at the end of the next day again. Of course it rained all day, so they rescheduled to Wednesday evening. Arnaud told me he wasn't even going to show up that day, cause there was rain predicted again. So in the end we couldn't see the end of it, we left on Wednesday and they finished the match Thursday.

Why do I even think tournament ppl think logically :p .
Well, it may not even be a tradition then ;). I was perplexed when they scheduled those unfinished match as 3rd match of the day during RG, it's like going against tradition, if tradition exists.

According to someone who have seen this match at London, Gilles was really nervous and frustrated by a lot of things...
The state of the grass, Nadal speaking after his match at the near court, plus he wanted to stop the play at 4-4 in the second set (discussed with the umpire 10 min, sitting down) whereas Adrian still wanted to play...
Hopefully, it will be OK tomorrow.

Thanks for this report. I wondered why there was a pause at 4-4. It's a shame Gilles couldn't persuade them to stop then. I've never been to queens, can't imagine what court 2 is like, i don't think they schedule many matches on it though.

lalaland
06-08-2011, 11:07 PM
Yes, thanks news-tennis83 for the report.

Nice to know Gilles' at his usual cranky self :p. and this is a joke, not a criticism
Okay, maybe I'm actually a little bit mad at Gilles, I kinda knew that he must be arguing about the light when it paused so long after each service game. He really shouldn't have let things get to him like that. Then again, it's probably hard if he can't see and they won't let him stop, Gilles. Well, it's okay, you can still do it, Gilles. Hopefully no rain tomorrow.

6-4, 6-1. Would have been nice for a more competitive match I guess, I have no idea how seriously these are taken :p

The interviewer at the end told Gilles he had a big fan in the stands (some girl kept screaming). Gilles said yes and took the mic and i think he said "thankyou very much for the support, it would have been zero without you so thanks!" :haha: (I would have supported you Gilles if I could have gone!!!) :p

I saw the whole match, although I'm half asleep watching :p. The second set is all him, UEs left right and center. He didn't seem to move well. I don't think it's any physical issue, just not used to the grass yet or not quite in sync, shanked a few routine FH on far right corner, could just be the bounce, or the spin of DelPo, or could be just Gilles, perhaps concentration a little off, don't know. Overall the result not too concerning, however, he better up his intensity a little even in practice just to gear up for Wimby, just 4 days away.

no it wasnt me I was in the opposite stand. There were a band of I think slightly drunken ladies cheering rather loudly for him so I didn't think he needed me to add to that.

He was squeaking at himself like a girl when he made some really bad misses which made me pmsl, doing a lot of muttering to himself and saying no a lot lol. Tutu yawned the whole way through the match I've never seen him look so disinterested.

After the match he was talking on the practice court and I could have taken more pictures but he looked quite grumpy and I felt it was a bit intrusive so I didn't but I took a few from a distance with the zoom ;). He wasn't moving very well and wasn't moving Del Po around. He didn't seem to be getting down to the ball very well and his timing was off. I don't know whether he was a bit stiff. He was kind of doing some stretches to his one leg after the match so I don't know whether he felt a bit tight.

will post some pictures (although I warn you I'm a wicked bad photographer) at some point before the weekend.

Thanks for the report. Will u be going again tomorrow for Gilles and Nole's match?

Hopefully it will be a better match from him tomorrow. I didn't have the volume on this morning when I watched, didn't know that he was squeaking at himself. lol, so at least he's mad for playing like crap.

nope I won tickets which is why I was there today. I don't think I'd pay to see an exo. It was a very very nice place though really nice venue.

I had a great time.

I would have preferred to go yesterday (espec as at the time I thought Gilles and Richard were playing as that was the original oop) but they emailed me really late and I only picked up the email from the club at 5 on monday to say did I want tues tickets or wed and that was too late for tues because of work.

But still had fun today and obviously because they changed the oop I wouldn't have seen Gilles yesterday.

He wasn't really mad at himself he was yelling at his shots in a really funny way not like the way he normally mumbles to himself in a match. I think he was quite amused about how crap he was playing. It was after the match he looked a bit grumpy to me although he always seems to give me a look of doom so maybe I'm just paranoid. Anyway I thought better not bother him. He wasn't grumpy during the match.

Yup I won tickets on twitter. I'm normally the most unlucky person ever so I was quite impressed with myself. So it only cost me half a tank of petrol which isn't too bad at all.

Not quite so impressed on the way home tonight when the rain was really bad and visibility was awful - a lorry pulled over into my lane on the motorway and I had to swerve into the fast lane. Bashed my horn and put my foot down and luckily the driver in that lane realised and braked. Missed him just about but I was shaking like a leaf.

Then got stuck in traffic behind an accident and went past a car that was really trashed and that shook me up again because it could so easily have been mine. Such a near miss.

Other than that really brilliant day though and feeling very lucky to be home in one piece.

To be fair Juan's serve was wicked good today. not sure whether he was just having a good day but it appeared to have improved massively since I last saw him live. I don't really like his style of play but it's so interesting seeing how hard he hits the ball. How the heck does he hit it in????!!!

from Tennis.com...

Even on a persistently drizzly day like today, the spectators are here to be entertained, punctuating points with the popping of champagne corks and encouraging the players indiscriminately. For the players, however, the shadow of Wimbledon looms large. Even practice seems a little bit more serious, or at least strategic, than usual; Ferrer plays an intense practice set, Simon tries to work on his return off Troicki’s first serve (it goes better after the Serbian starts calling it for him), del Potro hits nothing but serves and forehands fed to him by coach Franco Davin for half an hour, then sits down for a long, serious conversation.

As play begins, it’s far from a hit-and-giggle; the consensus seems to be to compete pretty seriously for at least a set and a half, then relax into entertaining once the outcome looks inevitable. Del Potro and Simon, first up, both seem to be focusing on polishing their serves and—in del Potro’s case—volleys; the Argentine looks in better shape than Simon, whose lower back is taped and isn’t stretching himself any more than necessary. It’s not until the Argentine is a set and a break up that levity really enters the proceedings—del Potro hitting a between-the-legs volley (and winning the point), Simon mock-pleading with the crowd to cheer for him, then blowing a kiss when they do. “Without you it would have been six-love,” he announces to a particular group of women in the stands after del Potro wins, 6-4, 6-1, earning a gale of horsey laughter.

http://tennis.com/articles/templates/features.aspx?articleid=12638&zoneid=9

Well, hopefully that taping at the back is precautionary. Hopefully he'll be 100% by next week when his first match starts.

Gilles quarter:
[1]Nadal v Russell
Andujar v Sweeting
Muller v Haas
Fognini v [31]Raonic
[24]Del Potro v [Q/LL]
Rochus v [Q/LL]
Gil v Sela
[Q/LL] v [15]Simon

[10]Fish v Granollers
Kohlschreiber v Istomin
Haase v Riba
Stepanek v [21]Verdasco
[25]Chela v [Q/LL]
Young v Bogomolov Jr.
[Q/LL] v Benneteau
Volandri v [6]Berdych

So Q/LL first round, gil/sela second then Delpo third  and he gets past that, Nadal fourth

Well we've just seen Gilles against Delpo on grass, didn't dent him, but I guess it was an exho. I don't have high hopes for this Wimby, plus Gilles doesn't seem 100%.

Thanks Tori, for your report.

Gilles' been very grumpy these days, even for his standard. Don't know what's going on with him, I suspect he's a bit burnt out. I doubt he'll be in any better mood tomorrow though if weather continues to be crappy as his mood. Honestly, I won't feel all that surprise if he doesn't last long in this tournament. But I do think if he loses quickly, may not be a bad thing, at least it will get him some more rest physically and more importantly, mentally. Then again, the match is in his grasp, he better don't let go of it tomorrow ;).

Well done Gillou! :D
Court 17 tomorrow, 3rd match, wonder if that'll be televised? Maybe ESPN3 has it Lala, do you know?

Pretty sure they don't have cameras on court 17, it's one of the tiny ones  I want to see him on TV so he'd better win! :p He can beat Chela easily...if he wants to.

ESPN3 has court 17 :D. 3rd match of the day is probably the time when I drive to work, which means I'll tape it when the replay becomes available at the end of the day ;).
Hope he wins. Allez Gilles.

Oh yay what a nice surprise! Wimbledon has totally ruined my last A Level exam  there's just so much tennis. Thanks MsTree, a slight confusion there  Thanks Lala that will be great :D

Although, if there are cameras, why can't BBC stream it

His itw on L'Equipe:

The BBC only have 6 interactive stream through satellite, ESPN have ?9? not terribly sure but I know they have a couple more. There might well be a dodgy stream available live though? My boss (I love my boss) has given me tomorrow off - although with the forecast we might not see his match till Thursday :o

Oh, what a nice boss you have, Les.
Well, my boss was nice too, I got monday off but turned out that I could have just gone to work since his match monday wasn't televised. Now I can't ask for another day off :tears:

ESPN3 has fantastic coverage, 9 out of 19 courts, CC, 1-3, 12,14,16-18, all the more annoying that Gilles' first match wasn't on any one of them :(.

I didn't think court 17 had cameras on it either.

Is that a new thing?

lalaland

Not sure if it's a new thing or not. They always do cover those big number courts, but I didn't realize there's 9 courts they covered, I thought it's only 7, until Les mentioned it and I went up to ESPN3 to count.

Gilles Simon happy with first-round win
Gilles Simon
From: News Limited newspapers

FRENCH tennis star Gilles Simon writes for us after his first-round win at the All England Tennis Club.
(what does it mean he writes for them? is he blogging on Aussie paper now?

TURNING up at any grand slam, but especially Wimbledon, knowing you are short of practice and matches is not ideal. A back injury from playing the ATP World Tour event at Queen's Club, followed by London's summer rain meant I went into my first-round match here with not enough practice.

I couldn't practice more than an hour every day so when you play a slam, you know you need to be ready to play 3-4-5 sets and you always want to practice more before a tournament.

It worried me that I didn't practice a lot before the tournament - it was far less than what I wanted, and I must admit before the match started, I felt like I was not ready.

Going into a first-round match is not a feeling that I like very much because maybe the very top players can afford to play the first match not 100 per cent. They manage to win it and improve every match. For me, unfortunately, when I'm not playing 100 per cent, I miss most of the time, and then I have to take the plane back home in the night.

So I was a little bit worried before and finally I think I played a very good match against Eduoard Roger-Vasselin, one of my French compatriots. The match started on Monday but because of the rain it meant that we had to come back and finish the match today.

Rain delays can be very frustrating but we were lucky that our match was scheduled late in the afternoon, so when it started raining, we knew it would be raining for all the night. When we came off I did my normal post match routine and then waited for the announcement that there would be no more play. As soon as I heard it, I was out of the club in a flash.

During the match, I played good tennis. The intensity was not always perfect but I had very good moments.

I know Eduoard and I know he is a very good player on grass. I knew he had played a lot of matches in qualifying and he won all of them - more than me coming into the tournament.

I knew it was going to be very hard because he is confident and he's playing his best tennis. For me, I knew it was going to be very hard.

Winning this match with a very light preparation is a very good result.

Most players don't like to look ahead into the draw, but I've always done that. I don't know why, but I always do - so I know what is coming.

If I win my next match against Dudi Sela, I'd get to play Juan Martin Del Potro in the third round and Rafa Nadal in the fourth round but given that I have those two in my draw, I didn't look any further than that!

I know every match is going to be very hard to win, so for now I will just to try to focus on Dudi.

We are the same generation and I know he is a very good player. He can play very good tennis from the baseline.

The only good news for me is that he's not serving only aces. He has a big serve.

I think I will have the advantage on the first two shots but if we have to play longer on the baseline, he is capable of amazing tennis.

He's a good mover, he can hit winners so I think my serve is going to be important in this match.

He's writing for an Aussie newspaper?

If Gille's match somehow has to finish on Thursday (unlikely) then we shall have a first hand report! Haha, well not exactly. My parents are going and if he's playing i'm forcing them to go take pics :)

Court 19 is def not televised. It'll get his match done though hopefully which is a good thing. He needs that day of rest between matches.

Oh dear. The court has been changed to 19 :( no watching Gillou after all  can anyone remember the OOP for court 17? I don't get why they would have switched it. OOP now is..
Court 17: WTA [32]Pironkova/Matric then Schuettler/Lopez then WTA [14]Pavlyuchenkova/Petrova
Court 19: WTA Hercog/Larsson then Gilles then WTA doubles.

He's seeded 15 for crying out loud, what does it take to get on a court with cameras

MsTree
06-22-2011, 03:18 PM
The old OOP for court 17 was Pironkova v Martic / Scheuttler v Lopez / Sela v Gillou / Marino v Vinci.
Hercog v Larsson was originally scheduled for 19 followed by loads of doubles, I reckon they've cancelled most of the doubs to try to get through the singles.
