Who is the current best french player??

In most countries, you clearly know who is their best player (Spain,Swiss,Serbia,Sweden) but in France's case,i have to say it's really hard to know.
For a long time, i thought it was Gasquet but now i'm not so sure.
I'm clearly not a fan of Monfils's game but he perhaps might the best one after all.....

So I'll stay with Clement.

I voted Monfils, which is probably biased given that he's the only one still in it (well Simon is but 2 sets down). He's ranked 9th and the others are 16th, 17th and 18th.

Totally depends on surface, IMO. Tsonga is inept on clay but is best of the bunch on HC. Opposite is true of Monfils. Perhaps it is Gasquet then, as he's decent on all surfaces.

Yes France is in this special, many countries has their best player, but France has many good players, this 4 are definetely the best what France have. Each of them is former top 10 player, in Monfils case current top 10 and each of them i think can be in top 10 for longer time if they played the best, but France need someone from this guys to step one level above the others and became top 5 - i know it is extremely difficult to be top 5 in era of Roger, Nole, Rafa, Delpo, Andy, Soda but i think Monfils and Tsonga have that potential. Simon i think is good player but has no weapon-not super forehand, beckhand or serve, about Gasquet he is good, talented, but if he gets in top 10 again i can see him in that 6-10 ranking not top 5, but how i said Tsonga and Monfils have both potential if they play there maximum, both are often injured what is problem for them to be good for longer period of time and also earn enough points to ATP ranking to go much higher than other Frenchmen. Also both play with too much emotions and are not thinking enough on the court are are very vulnerable for crowd - i mean they start to play in front of crowd too emotionaly and it can cost them matches. Monfils at his best i think is elite player on clay and top 10 without problem on HC, Tsonga is maybe even top 5 on HC at his best, so if they stay injury free and will be confident- they need something like Nole had- maybe if they will win Davis cup for France will get this extra confident they can be top 10 for long time and maybe even top 5.

Clearly Monfils. He is injured 8 months a year and is still top 10.

Heck of a Davis Cup team, though.

Gasquet. He drew the only guy that could beat him on a good day at RG. Otherwise his form has been superb. Monfils has been average.

Currently it's Monfils.

He beat Ferrer... he beat Fed indoors

I don't see any other French player do that (Gasquet also beat Fed but that was on clay (Fed's least surface)

He beat Fed indoors (and it was outside France so that excuse doesn't apply)

I don't see any other French player do that (Gasquet also beat Fed but that was clay (Fed's least surface).

Forget the surface, the Federer which played against Monfils was ten times worse than the one which played against Gasquet.
Federer choked a bit against Gasquet but he was still playing relatively well (47 winners - 30 UEs) whereas he was just terrible against Monfils.

The others have been mugging around the past couple of months while Monfils has been injured. Gael comes back from injury and reaches the quarter-finals of RG, beating Ferrer in 5 sets, while all the others fall out. It is clearly Monfils. If he wasn't so damn injury prone he'd be consistently around the no.7 spot.

Not with what he showed against Nole though.
Nole was outstanding but you have to admit that Richard's own performance was a bit disappointing, not necessarly because of the scoreline but more because of his showing.
Where were the BH winners for example?

yuri27

Gasquet would not have beaten Ferrer on clay. No way.

And why fucking not?
On clay, Gasquet has beaten Federer twice (people tend to forget Federer has been the second best clay courter behind Nadal in the last 6 years),Berdych(a FO 1/2 finalist),Verdasco, taken a set from Nadal in two of his 5 meetings with him on clay, has made 2 MS 1/2 finals and 1 MS final.
So on a good day, i don't see why he would not be able to beat Ferrer on clay

Gasquet's h2h with Tsonga is 4-3 Gasquet. Year to date Gasquet is 20-11 (60%) and Tsonga is 15/10 (40%). In 2009 they played 3 times and Gasquet won twice. Have not played this year or last.

A good thread would be which of these two guys is the most talented.

The other three in the poll are all excellent players, but also have significant weakness that likely can never be overcome to reach the highest level. I think Simon has the most upside... the only one capable of greatness.

Second choice would be Llodra, considering both singles and doubles prowess.

Career high ranking, Titles
Gasquet - 7 6
Tsonga - 6 5
