Damn, Frank v Blaz, the two guys I care about in the event. From what I remember, Rijeka is a damp and slow court, so I think Blaz will win. Blaz is the favorite to win the event if he's fit and playing well.

Will try to write few words about tournament these days, as place where it's held isn't too far away from me:)
Been away for previous edition, however sad to notice, there's no stands for spectators (unless you are drinking in a pub balcony, which a club headquarters:smoke:) or simply central court is pretty much like all courts - glued into one and separeted with a fence...

And yes Rijeka as town is best one in the World! Here is some more appropriate photo. Cheers!

Pedro Sousa (the only player who won a set to D-Pot in Estoril) is getting cofident. He got the game, and it seems he's getting his head into to it. 6-3 6-4 against Patience! I expect dozens of places up in the rankings, with this 9 points, and (who knows?) even more.

Eric was serving for the match at *5-4 and lost it, and then just ended the match really afterward. I'm guessing a mental injury as much as physical.

Dominant wins for Balasz, Junqueira and Guez. I'm very surprised about Guez winning that easily. Polaco usually puts forth better efforts than that.

Comfortable only by the scoreline.
Metkic had 2 break points, early in the 1st set, then fell apart after not converting them, from 3-3 to 6-3.
This continued in 2nd set. However Lorenzi game was much weaker in 2nd set, making Metkic way back with re-break for 4-4.
How Metkic lost his last service game is better not to talk about.Overall the real differnce in this match was "head" only.

OK, now few words about tournament in general.
I have to correct myself (previous report), as the organizers put some +- 100 seats for the central court.
This is of course just for the tournament.
General sponsor of the event is local oil industry "INA".
People are obviosly not amused with a whole thing as the most atractive match yesterday Mektic-Lorenzi was followed with
about 40 to 50 spectators.Atmosphere on stands was rather more appr. for theater then some sports event.
Veic, Zovko, Puc were amongst Mektic supporter's.
I had a word with one of the organizers, who is a bit pesimistic about events future or actually local clubs limits.
Veic had nice training session early in the morning and overall seems to be really nice bloke.Today he is expecting much bigger support from his friends and family. He is originally from one of the nearby islands, so to be a student in Rijeka is like a tradition which is followed by a lot of his friends.Hopefully this support will help him to win over Bagnis today at 1800 who is really a difficult player.
So far from local players, Mesaros is in 2nd round, whilst Mektic is out.
Besides Veic, Puc and Marcan are playing today, but with hard draw to advance further.
Probably the best chance here would have Skugor, but is unable to play due to injury.
If there's some chance will try to write some more.

so here's the story...there are confirmed stories that nine matches on the tournament had been fixed. six from yesterday's programme and three from today's. the word is that huge amounts of money had been bet in romania on those matches including Prodon - Mesaros where the bet had been on prodon. as far as you know Prodon led 5-2 in the third then retired on 5-6* 15-40*
today trujillo soler had to beat gensee what as you know happened (odds 2.70), kellner had to beat zopp but he retired at 2-0. i suppose that he maybe had some threats...
the last match is di mauro-zemlja...if di mauro wins, the romanian bookies will loose around 500.000 euros...

I see no one writes about the match fixing that is going on at this tournament.
There should be an investigation going on cause around 8-10 matches from the 1st round are supposed to be fixed by betting mafia.

A lot of French players involved in the betting scam: Millot, Prodon, Devilder ,Patience and Gensse all lost on command, while Brzezicki ,Julio Silva and Dutra Silva also lost here on porpouse.

Big money were placed at local betting shops on combo bets here in Romania, Croatia,Poland,Serbia,Bosnia etc.

It seems like every year there are couple of situations similar to this one.

Millot should be banned for life...same as Koellerer.

I am on an online betting detox now :tape: until I catch up with my writing jobs deadlines but I entered a local bookie yesterday ( ) to ask for a Djokovic RG outright prize and also noticed there were no Rijeka challenger matches (perhaps good for me or I could have lost on Brzezicki over Guez).

Today Zopp's prize was going up like crazy up to nearly evens and then Kellner retired at 0-2. Either a reverse fix or overplotting ;)

Also I am not sure how much "fixed" these matches were and how much just influenced by informators who are in Rijeka. We all know chaps like Brzezicki, Silva are the ones who'd go out to party and come back sleep at 8 a.m. and Rijeka is a party place with interesting women... so, we know there are guys stalking players in the parties and they could have made calls to their buddies in countries like Romania. This is what I always used to see in Sopot, when I was at the parties the bookies next morning were asking me who got wasted and were calling their buddies all over the world, I was a teenager and didn't know what really betting was and why these information were important ;)

Prodon retirmenent looks like at least severe gamesmanship case though I must say.

I know what you are saying Nathi and you are right, but this is something a bit different.
This shit was planned long time ago, with certain persons placing bets at the exact time in different locations, in different countries. It was done the same way last year, and two years ago, and 3 years ago...and so on.
Last year at the Arad challenger, Millot lost 2-0 to Muller and his friend Dasnieres lost 2-0 to Rufin, Renavand lost 2-0 in another tournament, Koellerer and Bogomolov also involved in the scam at that time as well.
Some Romanian bookies announced the tennis authorities and asked for investigation.

Too bad this shit is hard to proove.:)

As we are speaking, you may have noticed that the last match standing in the combo was void. Di Mauro retired when noticing that he cannot win the match as planned, same story as Prodon yesterday only not as late in the match :), so bet is void with locals where the bets were placed.

Money in the bank for those who bet :) Nice way to make more than 1 million euros right? :)))

Yeah, as much as I am convinced some matches are fixed (some are fixed in a very obvious way nobody even tries to hide it Chela-Schwank being the recent example) I also sadly like to give these schmucks benefits of doubts... After all, we're only human and won't play every match at our 100% only because we have a higher rank or because we take a surprising lead...
Then again we have some tankers who show up only for appearance fee or to win 1-2 matches and leave to prepare for a more important tournament (Santoro used to tank challenger R1 matches all the time, but was he fixing? No idea, no proof.)
I remember once I talked to a Czech player who told me he was injured and was hesitating till the last day to withdraw or not withdraw from the tournament. I wrote about it in my report and on the next day odds all over the world were reverse, huge money on the opponent, and a win. For someone who didn't read my report and only followed odds movements it was a "clear fix." So it's easy to make an assumption...

But yeah, stuff in Rijeka definitely stinks in some ways (at least some matches), and I have good news, I will be reporting from Sopot Challenger this year

I'm surprised because he was losing 6/2 4/0 in his match, then fought to take the set 2 and 3, and was leading *4/3 in the 4th set...he made a hell of a job to lose on purpose :)

Did you watch the match? It was so obvious...The game at 4*-5 in the fourth set looked like "Oh God, I forgot I have to lose that match".

Julinho (Silva) in the night?

It is a bit unfair to mark to whole tournament as a scam event, just because it appears some matches might have been fixed.(more about this in appr.thread)
Rijeka is small, modest tournament, but well organized considering prize money.
Rijeka has better-faster livescore than some major ATP events.Do I have to remind how many times we waited for some modern 21st century tehnology tools like "twitter" to inform us about scores - hours after matches were completed and yes we are talking about challengers played in EU, not just some distant places.
People in general are very friendly and players are feeling fine and secure.Infact hardly anybody can say a word against empires or hostile enviroment once playing local players.
This is a 5th year running, so I guess there are a few reasons why there's quite nice MD draw ...Local girls? Make a guess:D

Prodon said that he doesn't understand betting and that he wasn't contacted by anyone. His abdominal injury has woken up during his match against Mesaros and that's why he retired...
Patience and Millot are also voiceless regarding what they are being charged of.
Patience : "I have nothing to hide. These charges are amazing, btw I haven't won a match since months."
Millot : "What's this story ? I lost against a guy ranked 150th, if you can't lose against a guy ranked 150th there's a problem ! It seems they are accusing everybody !"

Millot is by far the biggest fixer within the Frenchmen. I m not surprised he is trying to look innocent here.
I remember last year, at the challenger in Arad, i was in the players lounge and i just witnessed Millot throwing away his match versus Lammer. It was the last match standing in the combos for people who bet...pretty much the same situation like in Rijeka this week.
I approached and confronted him. I presented myself as being a representative of a bookmaking company. I have never seen a guy transform in 3 seconds. His face turned all red when i told him that his match against Lammer was suspect of match fixing, together with his compatriot's match Dasnieres who also lost 2-0 to Rufin.
It looks like certain players are part of a betting ring. Since so many French players fix mathces togheter for combo betting, i think they could have the same management team who fix this ...just my opinion, but i could be wrong.

Someone could write a nice movie scenario based upon this:) it could be a big success. :)

I was in Rijeka almost the whole week, I am actually a good friend with Kristijan Mesaros, I went there to support him. I watched the match against Prodon and after the Frenchmen called the doctor, the whole crowd in the stands start laughing. After the match, I spoke to Mesaros, he couldn't believe that Prodon retired. He basically didn't know how to act at that time, he was confused.

I think many of us that follow tennis from all the angles, including Challengers know what's going on, we've all seen a whole bunch of suspicios matches, especially including French players. Even some of the familiar ones are doing the same thing for years, like Clement and Chardy, basically, French players have a strong connection between themselves, most of them trained together in tennis centers all over France, they are good friends, they travel together, hang out together in tournaments, so it is nothing strange seeing them do this kinds of things.

Unfortunately, there is no all that much the ATP or the ITF can do to stop them fix matches. Maybe, if they sent someone undercover to produce some kind of evidence, until that happens, those players will continue to fix matches.

Nathaliia

PS. Metafizicar, I agree with you the organizations would need to prepare fake fix attempts. You know, to gain the trust of the players (maybe they wouldn't want to fix for the unknown) and nail them and send the fuck out of tennis. These big names too (although I am convinced nobody would touch a top 50 player, look at how Davydenko escaped).

Yes, kind of expected but still, very important win for him! If he wins tomorrow, he will be for sure in the top100 again.

Also, off-topic, it would be a perfect day if Joćo Sousa qualified for Furth challenger final. it would be the first time in his carreer, that he would qualified for a final in this level, not to speak he would enter in top200 for the first time either.

Yes, it would be great for Sousa if he could reach the final, he has already knocked out Kamke and Ignatik.

I hope Elias will start to recover from his injuries because I think he's at the same level (or even above) of Sousa.

BTW, any info about Gil? I saw he is not playing any ATP nor Challengers these following weeks. Is he injured?

If healthy, Elias is above Sousa level, without any doubt.

I saw that too. Very strange schedueling by Gil. Even if he tries to skip the grass season, there is always clay challengers, where he can win precious and easy points... Very strange and very bad decision, cause I didn't heard about any injury. I think we all know, if he has a phisical problem...

I think Paolo would be a better match-up to Machado, but i stil think Ruis is the favourite. 70 minutes of play, the first to play, comparing to the 145 minutes of play by Grega, and it was the second match of the day. Rui will be a lot fresher, and it's on clay, his favourite surface. I really believe he will go back to top100, and get his 2nd challenger title of the season!

VAMOS RUI!
