The "Clay is for Pots" 2011 Useless Clay Season Thread

LOL. Not gonna lie. I hope he somehow manages to skip the entire clay season and go straight to grass.

He needs points and he does not want Mardy to be the number 1 American when they arrive in London so he at the very least should play all of the clay tournaments that he has entered. It did him no justice last year to play one match on clay headed into the FO. He needs the match play at least to keep some type of momentum headed into Queens and Wimbledon.

Every win counts right now. So he needs to play more on clay thi year. I really hope he will do Madrid-Rome-Paris. Plus, I'm going to Madrid, so he better plays!

Fumus

Pretty sure he'll do Madrid and Rome...I think he can make qrts(at least) in Madrid because the elevation helps his serve and he always seems to have some decent success in Rome. Then I mean, as long as he doesn't lose 1st or 2nd round in Paris he should be able to pickup some points.

arodfanpe666o
04-11-2011, 08:47 PM
Well, on paper he is capable of winning 2-3 wins in every tournament, but with Andy, you nver know.
The one and only thing I want is Andy to somehow manage to stay healthy to the end of the season. I get the feeling that he can't not stay healthy for more than 2-3 months now...The mono really did some damage

Andy winning the French would be the funniest thing ever. No joke. I can honestly picture it and I'm cracking up with the thought.

Andy Roddick, 2011 French Open champion! It's all a part of the master plan and then he'll win Queens, Wimbledon and Davis Cup then he'll retire and have some adorable babies!

He should use the next two months to bolster his confidence as much as he can heading into the grind of the grass court and North American hard court seasons. Sure, he could use points from the clay court season, but realistically he would be better off re-asserting himself as one of the best grass and hard court players in the world.

Andy needs to play on clay. Period. That's non-negotiable. He needs to get some match momentum.

It's only up from here right?

Remember in 2009 when Andy made the Wimbledon final and was playing unbelievable he had his best run ever at the French Open making the 4th round. Also, he played pretty friggin' good at Madrid too. These tournaments are important because confidence is confidence. He's got to start serving well, playing well and winning matches. I predict if he has a successful clay court season and makes a nice run at the FO he'll go far at Wimbledon and probably do well the rest of the summer.

Roddick leaves Roma in a rage (http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/2011/05/15/roddick-leaves-roma-in-a-snit/)
When the announcement came Sunday that Americans Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish had defaulted their doubles final in Rome to countrymen John Isner and Sam Querrey, the red flags went up.

The official reason was an issue with Roddick’s shoulder.

Not that an injury wasn’t possible, but the logistics of the situation were that Roddick had to dash to Nice, where he’s the No. 4 seed in the small ATP Tour event there this week.

And although Roddick wasn’t scheduled Monday (indeed may not be until Wednesday), the other three Americans did not have the luxury of time.

All needed to be in Dusseldorf, Germany toot sweet to play in the World Team Cup, with Isner scheduled at 1 p.m. and Querrey about 3 p.m. vs. Robin Soderling on Monday.

But according to the esteemed Neil Harman of Times of London, (the Times has a paywall, but it’s well worth it during this season for Harman’s pieces alone) Roddick is furious with the ATP for not finding the shoulder injury enough to be flexible on the prize money rules for withdrawals.

The default will cost Roddick and Fish €31,400 (plus the doubles ranking points, which probably don’t matter all that much to them).

Harman writes that Roddick had an ultrasound on his right shoulder, which showed a buildup of fluid that requires a few days’ rest.

The American, the way Harman tells it, kind of lost his mind as only Righteous Andy can do. He even wanted to call a press conference to make a huge stink about it.

Instead, he had Harman be there as a witness while he reamed out the ATP folks, who stood firm on a rule the Tour reportedly adopted because doubles specialists were blowing off matches to go and play lucrative league matches.

As Harman points out, the default allowed the other three Americans to catch the one and only flight from Rome to Düsseldorf Sunday night. Harman also said the organizers there were threatening sanctions if the Americans didn’t make it in time for their matches Monday.

So, really, there certainly seems to be some grey area there.

It’s not unlike Roddick to go off on something if he feels it’s wrong on principle – i.e. they didn’t just take him on faith that the shoulder wouldn’t allow him to play.

You’d think it isn’t the money. He’s made plenty, and his friend Mardy isn’t hurting either. But even rich guys don’t like to give any of it away if they don’t have to.

But rules are rules. And in this case they’re pretty clear. Roddick would have to point out other situations where players in similar fixes got a mulligan to give his argument much weight.

As well, if you took an ultrasound of Roddick’s shoulder at any time during the season (or most other big servers), it’s likely you’d find some fluid buildup there. He didn’t exactly play a ton of tennis during the clay-court season.

Heck, if you took an ultrasound of your esteemed Open Court servant’s shoulder, they’d probably find fluid (and a whole bunch of other things, too).

Roddick a doubt for French Open after Nice withdrawal

PARIS | Tue May 17, 2011 2:32pm EDT

(Reuters) - Former U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick has pulled out of this week's Nice Open with a shoulder injury and may not be fully fit for the French Open starting on Sunday.

"It is not ready to play yet, I hurt it last week in Rome," the American world number 11 said in a video on the Nice Open official website (www.opennicecotedazur.com) on Tuesday.

"It's running a big risk playing on an unhealthy shoulder with Roland Garros round the corner and Wimbledon shortly afterwards.

"I'm pulling out of Nice for now, obviously the situation is not perfect for Roland Garros."

The 28-year-old's best result at the French Open is the fourth round in 2009 given he is not a clay court specialist but he has reached three Wimbledon finals. He won the 2003 U.S. Open.

I'd be the first to blame Andy for not playing well or something like that, but he has sooo much bad luck since...IW and Miami last year. He is one of the most unfortunate players. I mean,he has been having serious injuries form the beginning of his career, and now he is getting old it is getting worse and worse. It's painful to watch his career comming to an end this way. I really hope he can make one last run deep into big tournament once again. I think this is as high as our expectations should be.

I think he should not play rhe French and go straight to London. The injury is only going to get worse if he plays. Anyway, he won't be prepared for Wimbledon either..

I'm sorry for my english, hope the post is understandable.

PARIS | Thu May 19, 2011 3:39pm EDT
