So after today's sweep of the IW-Miami by Djokovic, I was trying to think back to instances when 2 consecutive masters tournaments featured the same 2 players in the finals. Here's what I have:
2011 Indian Wells: Djokovic def. Nadal 4-6 6-3 6-2
2011 Miami: Djokovic def. Nadal 4-6 6-3 7-6
2009 Monte-Carlo: Nadal def. Djokovic 6-3 2-6 6-1
2009 Rome: Nadal def. Djokovic 7-6 6-2
2006 Monte-Carlo: Nadal def. Federer 6-2 6-7 6-3 7-6
2006 Rome: Nadal def. Federer 6-7 7-6 6-4 2-6 7-6
2005 Monte-Carlo: Nadal def. Coria 6-3 6-1 0-6 7-5
2005 Rome: Nadal def. Coria 6-4 3-6 6-3 4-6 7-6
1997 Monte-Carlo: Rios def. Corretja 6-4 6-3 6-3
1997 Rome: Corretja def. Rios 7-5 7-5 6-3
1995 Indian Wells: Sampras def. Agassi 7-5 6-3 7-5
1995 Miami: Agassi def. Sampras 3-6 6-2 7-6
1990 Indian Wells: Edberg def. Agassi 6-4 5-7 7-6 7-6
1990 Miami: Agassi def. Edberg 6-1 6-4 0-6 6-2
1990 Stockholm: Becker def. Edberg 6-4 6-0 6-3
1990 Paris: Edberg def. Becker 3-3 RET
Kinda bizarre:
1) IW-Miami and Monte-Carlo-Rome are the ones that get the most back-to-back finals with the same players. Stockholm-Paris is the odd one out
2) In the 90s, the player who won the first tournament always lost the next masters tournament to the other player....in the 2000s, that's been reversed, with the one player sweeping both matches.
3) Rafa's been in there a few times...of course the clay is a factor
Just wanted to mention this :)
