Well, me again, opening yet another thread for the clay season, but now, Gilles should be immune to my jinx ;).

I see this clay season as the most important portion of the season for Gilles, mainly because there are 3 majors tournaments (Madrid, Roma and RG) and no point for him to defend. Also because he's pretty consistent every year in the second half of the year, but it's hard to tell what he will manage on clay, so I think his performance this clay season will play a big part in what ranking he will end this season at. So allez Gilles, you like the red stuff, no?

First up, Casablanca next week. Gilles seeded #3, has a bye and most likely start play on thurs.

His section of the draw:

Starace/Brands
Machado/Ramirez Hidalgo
Bolelli/Gil
Bye/Simon

If he gets out of this section, the potential SF opponent is #2 seed Baggy.

When I read the draw for Casa I was going to write he could do some damage here but it would prob be to himself (:o) so I'll just say what an interesting field and reasonable draw

I also think that the clay season is the most important by far this year :)

I left out Monte Carlo just because it's pretty hard for him to gain pt there, he has to at least get to QF to gain (since his lowest 500 level pt is 90).

Really? Thanks for the info.
The ranking system seems even more complicated now to me. How the hell the 500p tourmanents affect the 1000p ones?

MsTree

Monte Carlo only counts as a 500 even though you get 1000 pts for winning it! It's the only one like that though :)

I finally see where this appears on WLT.
If he really had already w/o, then it will confirm my suspicion that tournaments don't announced w/o until the very last min, or delay it as long as possible so they can continue to sell tickets with the big names on the draw. Can't blame them though.

We'll wait for confiramtion. I don't mind one way or the other. If he needs the time to recover from the injury, then I'm happy that he's sensible enough to take the rest he needs. If he decides to play, then I'm glad that he gets some practice before the big tournament next week, plus there'll be stream ;). Actually, I kinda hope that he plays since we got stream, but that's kind of selfish of me :o.

He tanked the last game :fiery:, I so want to kick his butt (where can I go find a kick butt smilie). He just rushed 4 pts and made 4 UEs . He better has some damn good reasons like he's cramping or something, cos there's really no excuse to gave it away, it was still on serve and Starace didn't do anything to pressure him. It's like he had enough and just want to get off the court. Srsly, this sucks, Gilles. You just better do well in Monte Carlo, or else ...

I'm trying to think back, but it just seems to me that he always has this kind of losses on clay: this match, that DC match and last year's match against Nieminen, all losses when he was in a favorable winning position. Or is it just me trying to blame it on clay? but I can't really think of any losses on other surfaces, not recently anyway.

Silver.
04-08-2011, 06:40 PM
I did notice he was stretching his leg at one of the changeovers late on? Like, crossing his left ankle on his right thigh and pushing on his knee  cramp perhaps? Not sure..

darkboy
04-08-2011, 06:49 PM
Really? I only hope it's not the serious knee problem...
That tournament wasn't something important anyway, what's important is to do well in MC, Rome, Madrid and RG.

lalaland
04-08-2011, 07:12 PM
I did notice he was stretching his leg at one of the changeovers late on? Like, crossing his left ankle on his right thigh and pushing on his knee  cramp perhaps? Not sure..

Yes, I noticed that too, that's why I mentioned cramp. He was stretching the right leg during changeover, and he seems to have trouble with the leg during one of the last point. Doesn't seem to be the knee though. And by the look of it, it's not serious, it just seems he's annoyed, not hurt. He really looked like he just rushed things to get off court. It's not that he was nervous and couldn't close out. He just had no patient and rushed thru the last game. And what's more annoying is that Starace had looked like he couldn't bother either, so or the more nonsense that Gilles just gave the break to him.

That tournament wasn't something important anyway, what's important is to do well in MC, Rome, Madrid and RG.

The tournament is not important. But i think every win on clay will help his confidence. Last year, he said he was bothered by the loss to Nieminen on clay more so than any other losses. Loss like this one surely won't help things out.

I'm not too concern about the leg/knee, it feels like he's maybe a bit tired mentally though, he played nonstop since Rotterdam, eventhough he had breaks in between tournaments like Mia and IW. Still, it's hard to relax when there isn't a scheduled week off. He finally has a scheduled break after MC, so I hope he can re-focus and do well to close out this stretch. But first, let's hope for a good draw.

Anyway, I'll put it up later in case if anyone still wants to see and torture him/herself :p. It's not english again, the english stream had audio problem so I stick with the foreign language one.

his quarter:

[3]Murray

Stepanek
Baghdatis

Montanes
Malisse

Bellucci
[16]Simon

[10]Youzhny
Mayer

Qualifier
Stakhovsky

Gimeno Traver

MsTree
04-09-2011, 04:38 PM

lalaland
04-09-2011, 04:51 PM
Last nite when I wrote he'll be seeded, I was gonna make a joke saying hope he doesn't get Montanes at R1... but decide that I better don't jinx him. Ummmm, too late, just thinking about it already did the trick .

Okay, all those claycourters along the way, if Gilles made it out of R1 and R2, and even get a chance to Murray, I actually like his chances again Andy. But like Les, I don't think Andy will get that far.

darkboy
04-09-2011, 05:08 PM
Andy is not a big scare but Bellucci is a very good clay player, not even to mention Montanes...

If he manage to get to R3 he has chances for something good, even a semi ;) No matter what, he has to level up his game as soon as possible.

lalaland
04-09-2011, 06:13 PM
Agree that he certainly has to up his game a notch. I fear Bellucci more than Montanes, I don't know why, maybe because he's a lefty. It's a very tough R1.

So I changed the title back to Terre Battue, I realized that Gilles should be gliding on the real European red clay in order to succeed, not the fake American one :p. My bad.

Silver.
04-09-2011, 06:36 PM

Simon Joins "200 Match Wins Club", Ends Monte-Carlo Drought
Monte-Carlo, Monaco
12.04.2011

Frenchman Gilles Simon ended a run of three first-round exits at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and marked his 200th tour-level win in emphatic style on Tuesday as he dismissed Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-2 in the first match on Court Central.

The No. 16 seed saved six of the seven break points he faced and capitalised on four of his five opportunities to seal victory in one hour and 33 minutes. It marked his first win at the Monte-Carlo Country Club since his debut in 2006, when he reached the third round (l. to Ljubicic).

"It was a good match. I'm happy," said Simon. "It was a good fight. I knew I had to play well because every time I dropped my level of game, he was coming back. So it was a good first round."

Reflecting on his 200 victories, Simon commented, "I remember the finals. I remember the victories against the top players more than the losses against lower-ranked players, even if those losses were also useful for me to learn from."

The 26-year-old Simon, who won his eighth ATP World Tour title at the start of the season in Sydney (d. Troicki), improved to a 16-9 match record in 2011. He is coming off back-to-back quarter-final showings in Miami (l. to Federer) and Casablanca (l. to Starace).

Simon will next face World No. 23 Albert Montanes after the Spaniard cruised past Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2 in 82 minutes. The 30-year-old Montanes is coming off a season-best semi-final showing in Casablanca (l. to Andujar) last week.

I recorded this morning's match too when I was watching it. But somehow, this file of almost 2hrs and 1GB big, but nothing to show. I can only watch 5 mins of action and it stopped working after, something is corrupted in the file. I'll try to record the replay later, but I also don't have much time this week, super busy, so I'll upload as soon as I get it, not sure when.

Anyway, I'll try recording tomorrow's match too, hopefully it will work. If it doesn't work again, there's always replay.

P.S. My bad, tomorrow's match not on center court, no ESPN3 stream , no replay. Has to go with regular stream on livescorehunter, so I hope the recording will work.

Murray played really well today. I mean, Stepanek wasn't so hot, but Murray still played a lot better than he has been... so I'm not so sure of a win anymore.

But congrats, Gilles! :yeah: Two good clay scalps in a row.

Tutu
04-13-2011, 04:10 PM
 From what I saw, Stepanek was horrific and still had chances in set 2. Murray was good compared to IW/Miami, but by no means amazing or anything. Gilles has a good chance if he starts strong and keeps his head.

Annoyingly Murray seems to have found a little bit of better tennis. Gilles said once Murray was his most difficult opponent but hopefully he will stay patient, Murray will panic, and mentally implode  :p

I watched Gilles' match from 4-3 first set on, there were some good sequences here and there but mostly it was Montanes being horrendous that made the difference. When he finally upped his game, trailing 1-4 in the second set, things got tight instantly and Gilles's passiveness and lapse of concentration were again worrying. I wouldn't make him a favourite against Murray, no matter what form Andy is in.

The end of the match wasn't pretty, but it's still a pretty good win over a claycourter.

I won't underestimate Murray, but there won't be a better time to play Andy than now. Gilles' only win over Andy was on clay eons ago, so at least Gilles can recall that match and get some confidence ;).

what's the next tournament for Gilles?

lalaland
04-15-2011, 03:25 AM
Oh. :( Well if he could finish the match and didn't have to retire it can't be too bad.

Whether or not he's able to finish the match is never a good indication of how serious his injury is. Remember Bercy 09 that match against Legenda? he finished the match and even played the next one on that busted knee, and then it took him 8 months all the way to mid-june to completely recover from that busted knee . Not saying that this is serious or not, cos I have no idea how serious this is. When they were showing the trainer taping his ankle, that commentator said there's already a lump there which is never good. But who knows. If it's just a sprained ankle, then I think he can get over it pretty quick, but if there's any ligament issue, then it could take time.

what's the next tournament for Gilles?

He's on entry list of Estoril (single & double). I kinda hope that he will skip that one. I think he played too much recently and I hope he takes some rest. But if he shows up to play Estoril, his first match will be about 2 weeks from today. Hopefully it's not too bad so he'll be able to play Rome/Madrid.

Silver.

I just watched the match, I have huge respect for him for carrying on, but god that looked nasty on the replay. Thanks Kezzi
I just looked at his doubles partners for this year, they are either Swiss, French or German, so I guess he just chooses them based on language. :p
It was funny last year in Mons, he partnered Mahut. They played against Brown/Wassen, both train in Germany. Allegro made a joke ("It's not the same" roughly translated from German) about Brown always wanting to have the same ball back. Then Brown responded in German "I'll give you the same!" and smashed the ball really hard at him. Everyone laughed, except for Mahut and the audience (French speaking Belgians, only my sis and I understood German in stead of French  ) It was a pretty funny moment and Allegro translated it for Mahut. :)

edit: To keep the :topic: going, check his personal bio. http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Top-Players/Yves-Allegro.aspx :rolls: It's funny, but it's also kind of sad they don't have anything else to say about him. :awww:

Raonic's definitely the man of the moment, he got center court. I really hate the combined event. And I'm a bit bummed that Gilles don't get to get some match practice on center court. Oh well, he'll manage. Allez!

The commentator is ooh-ing and aah-ing at Gilles shots saying he just hit the shot of the tournament! The ball is so faint on my stream though I can barely see it :p

He played well today. Berlocq is a really good match up I guess, cos I felt that Gilles almost overpowered him :p (not often I can ever say that). His serve is really on and allowed him to take control right away and he often just stepped into the court and drove a winner from a weaker return. And the double match must have rubbed off on him, he came to the net to finish off points more often than usual. This gotta be a feel good match for him. Anyways, tomorrow will be a different story, Milos’ serve for sure will be much bigger than Berlocq. But he’s in good form, he will manage, I think. Allez.

I’ve uploaded today’s match. Tomorrow, his match is not before 4pm local time, which unfortunately means I’ll be in traffic around that time. If anyone can record the stream, that would be great.

Someone can say to Blackbriar to shut his big mouth about Gilles( Gael and Jo also)?
This guy is very annoying on the forum, in fact, he fears that Gilles climbs the rankings and surpass Gasquet at the end of the year.

I gave in and responded to him. I understand why some people dislike Gilles but his comments were plain idiocy and therefore probably should be ignored, but I couldn't help it :p
I'm not going to do it again in the future, he's basically trolling and trying to incite a response.

Doesn't look like they will resume play (although the message on the stream is "Live event will be starting shortly" the forecast is still heavy rain ). If they can't play, how do they fit them in then? Can they play the final on Monday? Or will whoever wins Gilles QF have to play two matches in one day

The ATP scoreboard is showing the Delpo v Sod score again and the livestream for Gillou's court is saying the match will start shortly :)
