Rainer is over 16 older than Ryan. He'll be 35 next month. Give it up for the oldest bloke in the top 100!

so much for harrison snatching slams left and right. he will be very lucky to make top 20 at the current rate.

i admire the spirit but i just dont see it happening for him.

Surprise?
I don't think so, tennis is a very complex discipline, to be in the Top 20 or Top 10 you have to deal not only with different surfaces but also with very different styles of play. Harrison beat at Indian Wells similar players (Chardy, Garcia-Lopez, Raonic) who try to get many points with a quick "serve & forehand" combination and play flat strokes from both wings, so their margin of error is quite big. I didn't see the match but I suppose Schuettler was trying to keep the ball in play and it was the key to Harrison's self-destruction.

It should have been Grandpa Schuttler beats young Harrison 7-5, 6-2...with his walking cane. I don't know how this old guy keeps doing it. I wouldn't be surprised if he finishes the year in the top 100 again.

you know it's a mug era when a 34 year old man who was never that good in the first place can still be in the top 100.

no wonder the quality of the current era has driven guys like thomas muster to grab the racquet again. they know they can win something given the mugginess of today's era.

No surprise here either, chardy and ggl are playing like byes for players nowadays. Harrison got lucky in IW and Rainer shows him how far away he truly is.

I don't think his performance in IW was overrated, but he had more pressure in Miami to follow up from that performance and it's quite typical to see young players not dealing well with expectations. I'm sure he was hyped up quite a bit coming into the tournament.

Schuettler also had a point to prove. Nothing much better for a veteran tennis player than to be able to assert his authority against the up and coming guys who think they can swing freely and get victories left and right. I'm sure he played with extra motivation today.

Not a surprising result. Night+humidity+already slow court=horrible conditions for Harrison. And knowing Rainer he probably counterpunched Ryan's shots a lot and kept him off balance, and Ryan made tons of errors. Also Rainer is a better returner than all 3 of Raonic/GGL/Chardy, so he's going to get more serves back and force Ryan to play, and he's still a bit erratic at this point in his development. Lastly, the weight of expectations on Ryan from IW potentially could have been weighing on his psyche. But we all have to remember he's only still a kid, and will only keep improving from here.

Great to see Rainer getting some good results when some on this forum wrote him off :yeah:

It doesn't really change anything for Ryan. He's still a very good player who will be a top 100 player by fall and a top 50 by this time next year. Losing this type of match is part of the maturing process. Schuettler knows that.

this old bone rattler, 'the kraut meister' schuettler is an evergreen... all pro this guy...

if harrison had a decent coach, he'd tell harrison to go have a shower, shit and shave then write a 5000 word essay on why he should be appreciative of the quality time him and the old kraut spent together... as well as 25 points of what he learnt for the creaking old dog..

Fixed. I like both players so was happy either way.

Nice work Schuettler! Plays Simon next who beat him in Indian Wells a fortnight ago. After Miami he will probably play random hard court Challengers until Roland Garros.

Great win Rainer! Some extra needed points :yeah:
Rainer can still play brilliant tennis, he's just very good at losing tough matches. Hopefully, he somehow changes that and wins more matches now...would be great to see him (at 36 onwards) still playing and in the top 100....

A result you'd expect, but  Thought Harrison could sneak the first set if he didn't get broken early.

Harrison is done. What an overhyped no talent mug. He's never going to amount to anything (insert whatever else MTF regularly uses to describe ONE loss)

You should know there are only 3 good players in the world and all others are mugs/clowns/chokers. And even these 3 are qualified as mugs by the other 2 fans :)

Schuettler in his forties could still beat overrated mugs like Harrison in the ATP

I doubt it, but considering how fit Rainer is (he rarely retires from matches and plays a lot of tournaments every year) he is doing very well at his age and could keep on doing well for a few more years.

Today grandpa' sent bobby to the cleaners in queen's.

i could say that grandpa at his forties could routine these young mugs if it weren't so ironically true that rainer is actually quite close to reaching 40.
