Into the Quarters of a Spanish future claycourt after having to win 4 matches on Qualies. He also qualified the week before for another Spanish claycourt event and won a round.

Was born on the 18th December 1991. Currently ranked 896 in the world and according to his ITF profile he is currently a member of the NSWIS. He doesn't have a profile on Tennis Australia so I can't say much more but I think Andy (Hewitt=Legend) knows a bit more about him.

Saw Matt play at the Manly Seaside in December. Big lad, has a big serve and a HUGE forehand. Won the singles title. Came from a set down to beat Sadik Kadir, if my memory serves me correctly. From the post-match interview seemed like a likable person with a good attitude. Let's hope he progresses well.
Any news on the QF - nothing posted on the ITF site?

Hewitt =Legend
03-25-2011, 05:27 AM
Yeah, like RustyOz said he has a good serve, big forehand and the backhand is a steady shot. Works with Sandon Stolle and Mantilla has been helping him out recently as well. Isn't the most talented guy out there but hard work and commitment to the sport has got him to where he is today. It's funny, growing up playing with and against him, there were probably about 20 guys that were more talented and had more weapons than Matty, but they had poor work ethic and not the required desire to compete as a professional tennis player.

Plays Pedro Clar-Rossello who is the number 1 seed and in good form this year. Hope Matty can put in a good performance, and one things for sure, he will never give up.

A good performance by Matt against the No.1 seed, going down unfortunately in 3 sets 46 62 62.
Hope he continues to progress and wins more matches.

Excellent effort from Matty, especially against an in form player like Pedro.

Thanks RustyOz and Andy for the info.

Matt got a special exempt into another Spanish Clay future and took out the wildcard Oriol Roca Batalla 64 64 in the first round. Next up is either the second seed Jan-Lennard Struff or Ivan Nedelko.

Great photos Sombrerero. Now people will be able to recognise him. Btw, Barton beat No.8 seed Belgian Alexandre Folie in the 1st round in 3 sets, not letting a 1-6 first set get him down, and bouncing back to win the next two set 64, 64. Good win.
Barton up against another qualifier, Yannick Hanfmann, ranked 941, similar age and ranking to Barton, so hopefully Matt can get another win here and go deeper into the tournament. Go Matt.

Yep - following that stat as well. Just a smidgen away from Top 200. Who would have thought at the beginning of the year. Definitely will go top 200 this year, is well placed points wise in the front of the year (has very little to defend - only 30 points to end June).
Go Matt Barton - play fearless tennis.

On a similar note - a lot of the lesser ranked Aussies (not top 120) are well placed to progress well in the first half of the year, with few points to defend:
Millman - 22pts until May, then a crunch 60pts mid May, but very little (14 pts) from then to September
Barton - 30 pts until end June ;)
Reid - 10 pts until July :D
Jones - O pts until June  :)
Feeney - 1 pt until end July  :)
Kyrgios - 3 pts until August, then not much after :worship:
Bolt - 6 pts until Junes :)
Saville - 7 pts until mid May :)
Klein - 12 pts until May (but 39 pts to end May and another 18 in June):(

So Jones and Fenney have least points to defend the remaining half of the year (due to injuries last year most probably) - now need the results.

Groth has the most to defend - 98 to end May, with
Duckworth (56 pts) and Smith (58 pts) to end May :(

Of the top 120:
Hewitt - 0 pts to Mid Jul, then 150 in July and 70 in early Aug :worship:
Mato- 41 pts in Mar then another 157 in May and more in June (93)
Bernie - 100 pts to May, 120 in May and 45 in June
Ebden - 106 this tournament, 10 in April, then 32 in June (most of those 10 pointers for 1st round loss in Master's events !!) :p;)
so Hewitt best placed here - just needs to win some matches.

Great bunch of stats there cheers.

So Saville hasn't been in a great patch lately but with a few lucky results and some runs he should see himself inside the top 300 for RG, same with Bolty with only 6 to defend he could really do well in the 2 upcoming Aus futures being the 3rd seed at the first one. I'd put my money on him to be in the RG qualifying list as probably an alternate but right up the top. Jones is playing some great tennis at the moment so he really should return to the top 250 if not better before his points start coming on, Millman soon to be top 150??? And Barton I think will be similar but slightly behind. Klein mmm not in really any great form apart from winning the doubles title last week so hopefully that sparks the kid up to get some good results. Reid and Feeney just chugging along under the radar both would be great to see in Wimbledon and RG qualifying.

Injury free Groth should be able to defend most of not all of those points, Duckworth is going to be the one in that group to drop in my opinion down the rankings a little. But I hope he proves me wrong and can start to find some consistent wins.

Ebden hopefully can at least make the second round here at Indian Wells you'd think anyway...

Hewitt top 50 here he comes...

Matosevic did well in Memphis to defend those points the week after in Delray Beach, maybe a win or two at IW see him up again and then hope he can play well on the dirt.

Tomic the man great win this morning, please back it up against Gasquet then knock out that spud Janowicz. I'm tipping him to be seeded at Roland Garros so don't let me down Bernie.

So who else thinks everyone of these players RustyOz has mentioned will at least play either qualies in the next two slams? All very much should, cannot wait to see a huge bunch of Aussies over seas in events like that willing one another along to get the wins and all try to better each others results.

Good on him for giving this level a go.
I agree he is not quite there yet, but he needs to get a taste in order to know what he needs to step up into.
I'm excited about the year ahead for Matt.
Hanging around ATP qualies losing 1st or 2nd round each time gets you no where tho so go back & get some wins now & may be hit some US hardcourt ATP qualies in a few months.

Good qualifying draw for Barton. He plays Di Wu in the first round, who has only has two clay wins in his career (Davis Cup versus someone ranked 1511 and a Challenger qualifying match in 2009). His second round match (if he makes it) will be against a hard courter too.

Barton started so well at the beginning of the year, it suggested a spectacular year for him. But something must have worn off, as he has failed to duplicate his amazing start to the year.

He has earned 173 pts so far this year, and has 43 pts to defend. So if he can get back to his early year form, confidence and fitness, he could have a good second half to the year. He only has 6 pts to defend before the US Open cut-off, so will make the qualies draw. Let's hope it starts again for him there.

the implosion...
Drops serve to trail 5-6, loses set 5-7 and then dumps his bundle. Loses 8 games in a row to acquiesce 5-7, 0-6 and bow out of the US Open qualifying at the first hurdle. Must say it was a tough draw, up against DY.

Withdrew first round (or lost) in Alice Springs Futures and then did not play Sydney, so presume he is injured. Last I heard he was down on confidence and was just training but did have some niggling injuries. A pity, he started the year so well but has been down hill for him since then.
