Is this the new Nadal?
19 years old and 22-3 on the year. Won 2 futures and reached 2 finals. Last week got to the QF of Rabat, winning against Korolev and Di Mauro.

Anyone knows him better?

Springer89
03-22-2011, 10:34 PM
I've been following Pablito since he took a set from Filip in 2008 and I'm his fan since spring 2009.

Saw him playing once - Meknes Challenger last year QF match against Lamine(? IIRC). I liked his game and I think he played first set really, really well. Till today I can't figure out what happened in the second, but it was like some other player stepped on court.

Highest ITF rank 6. Some junior highlights (singles titles only):
2007 U18 G5 1st Torneo ITF Junior Benicarlo (Clay)
2007 U16 Champion of Spain (Hard)
2007 U16 Eddie Herr Winner (Hard)
2008 U18 G3 6th SFAX ITF Junior Tournament (Hard)
2008 U18 G1 International Junior Tournament of Offenbach/Main (Clay)
2009 U18 G1 Optus Nottinghill International (Hard)

In 2009 improved from unranked to 515. Currently at career high - 272.

Is he the new Nadal? No.

Thanks for sharing. Of course 'the new Nadal' was kind of a joke, there will never be a new Nadal.
But if he continues to get results like he is having now, he will be in top 150 pretty soon.

Remarkable that there are quite a lot of HC-titles in your list. This year he has only played on clay.
So he is an allcourt player?

Springer89
03-26-2011, 02:21 PM
His favorite surface is hard but his results are slightly better on clay... I think he will be equally good on both.

Too bad he lost to Schoorel in a very tight match. But these things happen. Schooorel is a pretty good challenger player to which he can lose.
Good luck in next tournament, although I do not know which one. He is not in the EL of Napoli.
Maybe WC to Barcelona qualis?

Springer89
04-14-2011, 03:38 PM
Agree. Losing 6-7(6) in third to 2 years older, 120 spots better ranked, 2.03m tall lefthander is nothing to be ashamed of.

Maybe WC to Barcelona qualis?
He was given one last year, can't think of a reason why not giving him one this year.

I've just came across this article, and I found it interesting 'cause I had no idea who is coaching Carreno:

Quiero destacar el buen inicio de año y de relación profesional que Carreño y Javier Duarte están desarrollando nada más y nada menos que dos campeones y una final. También aprovechar para demostrar mi admiración a Duarte y más en este Post en el que estamos hablando de conseguir objetivos en definitiva éxitos o títulos nada más y nada menos que 34 títulos ATP como Coach (Corretja, Berasategui y Carlos Costa) y una ensaladera de Copa Davis como capitán.

Since December last year according to this (http://tenisgrupista.wordpress.com/2010/12/01/un-paso-mas-hacia-el-profesionalismo/) article or since January according to Pablo's profile page (http://tenisgrupista.wordpress.com/pablo/) on the same site.

Pablo spent three years in CAR in Barcelona (from September 2006) and was coached by Moisés Pozo Casals, who had coached Tommy Robredo and David Ferrer during their junior years.

Pablo have just lost to Victor Estrella in Medellin 50k. :help:

well, Estrella ended up winning the title, against all odds.

Pablo lost today 5-7 1-6 against Naso in Buenos Aires... he's not having a good final months of the season.

he'll play his last tournament of the year next week in Montevideo, hopefully he does better there.

Also, let's see whether Pablo decides to play AO qualies next year or not. I hope he does because he'll be seeded in Melbourne and he isn't a bad HC player. I'm surprised by the fact Pablo has never played Slam qualies yet, since he's ranked inside the top-140, he could've tried to play them to gain some experience.

Best of luck to Pablo next week and in 2012. We should see him finally entering the top-100 next year and I'm sure he will.

The Prince
01-26-2012, 09:03 PM
I think top 100 would be a good goal for him to chase. He has a nice game, but I feel his clay tennis could actually benefit if he played on hard-courts a bit more. Think he is playing a few indoor CHs this spring, so I guess it's still a learning process!

Filo V.
03-30-2012, 10:01 PM
Unfortunately for Pablo, 2012 hasn't been as successful as he would have hoped, with a 3-8 record overall. His last tournament in Marrakech was his only successful tournament in the season, reaching the QF defeating Bedene and Duckworth before losing a tight match to Hanescu. A lot of his losses this season have been close but he's not been able to come through in the big moments to win these matches. But with his last event also being his best of the season, hopefully that is an indication his form is improving and things will get back to a positive direction for Pablo throughout the European clay season.

His next scheduled tournament was going to be Barletta this upcoming week, but he withdrew. Hopefully whenever he returns he comes back and can start putting together winning performances!

Filo V.

It's quite possible, he was already given WCs to Barcelona in the past (2010 qualy, 2011 MD), he trains there so he's pretty much a local player, and with the results he's having this year there's hardly anyone who deserves WC more than him. If the organizers don't give him a wild card then something is seriously wrong with their judgement :)

10 Things: Pablo Carreno-Busta

1. Barcelona Boy: Carreno-Busta was born in Gijon, Spain on July 7th, 1991. He currently resides in Barcelona.

2. Early Days: Pablo took up tennis at age six in his native Gijon. He later moved to Barcelona to train at a tennis academy there.

3. Turning Pro: After good success on the junior circuit, Carreno-Busta turned pro in 2009. He competed on the ITF circuit and won five titles in 2011.

4. Main Draw Debut: He made his ATP main draw debut also in 2011 at Barcelona where he lost to Benoit Paire in three sets.

5. Setback and Surgery: By the end of 2011, Carreno-Busta had achieved a career high ranking of No. 136. But midway through the 2012 season, he was forced to stop playing and have back surgery. Carreno-Busta was unable to play for eight months and only returned to competing near the end of the year.

6. Hot Streak: Carreno-Busta came back to tennis with a vengeance this year on the ITF circuit. Playing almost exclusively in Spain, Carreno-Busta won 38 matches over the course of two months by reaching eight Futures finals and winning seven titles.

7. Carreno in Casablanca: Having qualified for the ATP 250 event in Casablanca this week, Carreno-Busta went onto upset defending champion Pablo Andujar to increase his win streak to 39. But his run came to an end today with Kevin Anderson taking out the Spainard in the second round 6-3, 6-3.

8. Spanish Idol: Carreno-Busta said in an interview with Marca a few years ago that his favorite player of all time was Juan Carlos Ferrero.

9. Favorite Surface and Shot: Clay and his two-handed backhand.

10. Social Savvy: Keep track of Carreno-Busta on Twitter @pablocarreno91 (https://twitter.com/pablocarreno91) or on his Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pablo-Carreno-Busta/168698409857754?fref=ts) which he often updates including after today's loss when he wrote "I lost today against Anderson 2:0, but i wasn't play so bad..Next time i will be better :) Vamos Pablooo!! :)))"

2013 ATP WORLD TOUR AWARDS PRESENTED BY MOET AND CHANDON

Most Improved Player Of The Year Nominees

by ATP Staff | 31.10.2013

The Most Improved Player of the Year, in the 2013 ATP World Tour Awards Presented by Moët & Chandon, is the player who reached a significantly higher Emirates ATP Ranking by year's end and who demonstrated an increasingly improved level of performance through the year.

This year’s nominees are (Year-end 2012 Ranking and 14 October 2013 Ranking):

Pablo Carreno Busta (715-66) :worship:
Ivan Dodig (73-29)
Fabio Fognini (45-17)
Stanislas Wawrinka (17-9)

A seven-month injury layoff in 2012 caused Pablo Carreno Busta to drop to a year-end No. 715, but the Spaniard wasted no time in making his way back up the Emirates ATP Rankings, beginning with an impressive effort on the Futures circuit. Following a runner-up finish in his first tournament of 2013, Carreno Busta was invincible - winning 35 straight matches and seven titles.

He made the leap to the ATP World Tour, qualifying for the Grand Prix Hassan II, where he recorded his first tour-level win. A few weeks later, he strung together six straight wins in qualifying and reaching the semi-finals at the Portugal Open, lifting him into the Top 200. He then qualified for his first major at Roland Garros, where he faced Roger Federer.

Carreno Busta also excelled on the ATP Challenger Tour. He went 4-0 in finals during the summer, including a streak of 15 matches and three titles won. In August, a month after his 22nd birthday, Carreno Busta earned his status as a Top 100 player.

“It’s a honour to be nominated as the Most Improved Player of the Year,” said Carreno Busta, who gained direct entry into ATP World Tour events by the autumn. “This season has been great. I started around 700 and now I’m ranked 66, I could have never imagined this.”

Pablo Carreno Busta:  The Spaniard climbed from a year-end No. 715 Emirates ATP Ranking last season to a career-high No. 66 in 2013, beginning with an impressive effort on the Futures circuit that saw him win 35 straight matches and seven titles from eight finals. As a qualifier on the ATP World Tour, he recorded his first tour-level win in Casablanca, reached the Oeiras semi-finals and made his Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros. The 22 year old also excelled on the ATP Challenger Tour, going 4-0 in finals.

Meet The Spaniard Who Won More Tennis Matches Than Rafael Nadal This Year

Miguel Morales, Forbes Staff

Spanish pro Pablo Carreno Busta isn’t a household name but he should be thanks to an unusually grueling feat this season. He played a staggering 110 matches on the men’s tour, skyrocketing up the rankings with a 92-18 record. At the beginning of the year, Carreno Busta was ranked No. 715. He now stands at 64 in the world, leapfrogging 651 spots in the process while posting a tour-high ranking jump among players in the top 100.

His remarkable year ensured financial success–$182,192 in 2013 to be exact–in a sport where it’s tough for players outside the top 150 to break even. For pros costs can run as high as $100,000 a year if they travel with a full team, whose services come in handy in order to keep up with the Janowiczes. At No. 715, he likely made less than $5,000 in prize money for all of 2012. At that rate, it would take him 14,200 years to make what Federer earned the past year–$71 million. Carreno Busta told FORBES, “Sponsors have helped a lot during my tough times.” As a promising youngster from a tennis-rich country, he has the opportunity and marketing potential to count on sponsors in these moments, a coup less talented players with less established home bases can’t rely on.

At one point, Carreno Busta beat 39 opponents in a row in 77 days. His streak passed Serena’s sparkling stretch of 34 wins that included the French, and easily lapped Nadal’s two 22-match runs. One hitch: the opponents he faced were nothing like the Sharapovas and Djokovics that Serena and Nadal dispatched during their streaks. (No offense, Oriol Roca Batalla.)

His run does hint that he may have that hard-to-teach quality vital for ensuring a long career–consistency. Beating such a range of players, especially those he’s supposed to beat, for that duration on days he probably didn’t feel his best is a hallmark of top players. Even if Carreno Busta improbably said, “I felt perfect,” playing so many matches.

Playing nearly 75% of his scraps on the soft clay surely spared his knees and joints, and his youth helped him recover more swiftly as well. Last year Carreno Busta suffered a back injury, which took him out of the game for most of 2012. Back injuries can be catastrophic for pros, who must turn on a dime countless times each match, to say nothing of the back bend needed to add enough work on serves. After his early doubts evaporated about how the back would hold up, he played like a man making up for lost time–and for good reason. Carreno Busta was finally winning enough matches to start playing the comparatively lucrative Challenger tour. Just two months after beating the world no. 280 in a Futures final, he was playing Roger Federer at the French Open.

Even for someone as indefatigable as Carreno Busta, the strain of breaking the century mark in matches played, a feat only five men have accomplished in the last 13 years, began to show. Facing Bernard Tomic at the Paris Masters, he admitted, “I lacked the strength and freshness that I had in the first few months of the year.”

For his sake, he won’t have to vulture Challengers and Futures for ranking points next year. He plans on playing less than 30 tournaments next year, though playing 25 is considered a lot for pros. At 64th in the world, he’ll gain direct entry to the Slams as well as many ATP Tour events that will pay him much more than the paltry $1,300 he made for winning Spain F7. Welcome to the big(ger) leagues, Pablo Carreno Busta.

I got to see Pablo live in Auckland this week and I thought I would share some things I saw with you guys. This was the first time I have ever seen Pablo play, and I was very impressed with him, especially in the match against Kohlscreiber. I saw him practice with Ferrer on Monday, they played some points together and Pablo would get very excited whenever he won a point - it was very cute! Him and Ferrer seem very close, he sat with David's coach during David's second round match too.

Here are some pictures I took of him:
