Nadull serving like Dementieva from the 2nd set on. :spit:

Good to see Nole finally growing a pair against Rafito. It looked like he was ready to bend over like usual after the 1st set.

Now if only he would grow a pair to beat him at a Grand Slam, this would be something else.

Congratulations Novak,

The unbeaten run continues

Nobody can deny that Nadal was well below his best in the 3rd set. But this was a result of Djokovic breaking his game down in the 2nd set, and getting to him mentally, something which few players have done.

Djokovic was excellent all round. He proved today that he is currently the de facto world no. 1

Strong, strong work from Djoko. Incredible.

Rafa's level dropped tangibly in the middle of the 2nd set; good on Djoko for fighting to take advantage, then push that door open even wider in the 3rd.

I'm liking the dynamic between these two more than Fedal's. Rafa was simply a bad matchup for Roger. These two are almost-peers, with facets and talents that are almost evenly matched. If any one shot or bit of footwork or mental capacity goes slightly awry, the other ascends. If the player rebalances, we get a high quality stalemate again. Complete with delightful points to watch.

Hopefully, these two will push each other to become better players.

Djokovitch was excellent in the 3rd set. Nadal was unreal in the first set, and then disappered. First serve went AWOL for Nadal - and that is the cue for a rapid defeat for any player, world number 1 to world number 5000. But Djokovitch was hitting freely at the end of the third.

To be honest, Nadal should never have lost the second set. Had he kept his nerve and found a few more first serves I have no doubt that he would have gone home with his nineteenth Masters Trophy.

Djokovic played well, however; credit to him for stepping it up in the second and third sets. I don't see anyone beating him until Monte Carlo.

And here come the pathetic haters, those who cheer loses instead of supporting favorites. What lives they must lead.

Anyway, Rafa looked to be in control of the match for the first set and a quarter, and then he completely fell apart. One of the most shocking collapses I've seen from Nadal. Nole was solid and served much better as the match went on, was more aggressive, and more or less took control of the match from the middle of the second set on.

Nole, right now, is the #1 player in the world. Gotta give credit where it's due.

philosophicalarf
03-20-2011, 11:26 PM
Nadal had a total collapse, don't think I've ever seen that from him.

Set 1: Nadal meh, too many errors, Djoko sluggish and poor.

Set 2: Nadal's serve goes awol, misses first 11, and made 25% for the set. Many, many errors. Despite that, Djoko looked a bit beaten at times, bad body language, Nadal should probably have finished it here.

Set 3: Nadal still no first serves, still spraying errors. Djokovic gets confident, gets aggressive and run away with it.

Nadal's stats say it all: 17 winners, 34 errors, 42% first serve. I think this is the worst performance by Nadal I've ever seen against a top5 opponent.

Rafa :o just, wow, horrendous.

First set, very decent, had Djokovic mentally crushed (as always) it seemed. Then somebody stole his serve, forehand and backhand. Still, more than pleased

with this tournament, he showed that he's unbeatable when he's in the zone. Just need to be more consistent and for goodness sake, work on that serve.

Nothing Nole had to do in the second and third set but stay on the court, Rafa took care of the rest.

Even in the face of adversity these days Nole finds the way to fight and to win. Nadal had it all on a plate... he then lost all papers. Nole is undefeated in 2011... 20 straight victories so far. And he has proven that all demons of the past stay in the past. All that talk that we have heard incessantly... he has never defeated Nadal in 3 sets, 5-0 against Nadal in finals, blah blah blah... there's always a first time for everything. :worship:

I wonder what Rafa was trying to achieve by hitting every first serve above 125 miles per hour from second set on? Match was there for the taking and all Nadal needed was few wide sliders on the first serves. I know people gonna talk about djokovic here but the final result was mainly due to Nadal badly missing the plot and hitting mindless first serve faults.

Indeed, so true! This was the point where Djokovic looked pretty downcast, staring at his feet, looking to the box. Seemed inevitable that Nadal would win from there, but when you make no first serves, the law of averages will catch up with you: eventually the breaks will come. When they did, the rest of his game fell down with it.

Nadal has been struggling with his first serve a bit all tournament really, but it's just been a bit off, not catastrophically so. I wonder if he's been tinkering with it a bit, because it looked like a total technical collapse today. Was about as smooth as my backhand (and my backhand really likes the back fence).

03-20-2011, 11:33 PM
Jekyll and Hyde from both guys, honestly. Good first set, Rafa was easily the better player though, Djokovic struggling on serve and return at different times. Rafa still the better player for the first 4 games of the second set even without a single first serve, but that couldn't last forever and Djoko found some returns and broke, got broken back and broke again. Barely served it out, falling over the finish line. Third set Rafa avoided the bakery by the skin of his teeth while Novak was sublime. Djokovic has rolled Rafa on HC a number of times before, but this victory was very different and could be indicative of things to come.

Wrong. Nadal actually played well then. And while the slower courts at IW give him some advantages, the quick courts in NY help his serve and give him more pace on his shots. Lastly, that is a major, this isn't. The Djokovic then and now are different players.

People will question since he never lost when he's not injured ... so .....

Although I don't think he will say my game fell apart or clueless in last 1.5 set.

Jeez, what did they pack into that trophy.

detail: Rafa whacking his shoe with the racket as if cleaning it of dirt. He can't wait for the clay :)

This is an important title for Novak. The fact that he came back from a set down is even more valuable than if he won it in straights against the only player now that he might have had a mental problem with.

Now to Florida. Don't expect him to excel there, but secretly hoping for a double :)

Not only did Djokovic win, but he did so despite having a tougher draw and schedule than Nadal (playing 3 consecutive da, and despite having an injured knee.

Is there anyone who will deny that Djokovic is, in reality, the world's best player?

Yeah, this is more impressive than anything

And this was his 7th top 10 win of the year

think this is the first time Novak beated Nadal while playing pretty low percentage shots....bunch of angled forehands and loopy shots high over the net which he rarely used in the past against Nadal on hardcourts...this was more Murrays gameplan but Djoko pulled it out

On outdoor HC? Yes

But to be the world's best player you can't only excel on HC.

Rafa is still the man to beat on clay and grass. Let's wait for the clay season if Novak can do some real damage this year.

WOW what a strange, toppsy-turvvy match that was!

In the first set Rafa was *creaming* Djoko with perhaps the best playing of his since USO 2010. The second set saw both players' level of playing drop dramatically, especially Rafa's, who somehow, suddenly, couldn't get more than 25% of 1st serves in :o - which eventually, after a very long struggle in the last game, cost him the set. The third set saw a very badly playing Rafa (oh that UE count! I haven't yet seen it but it must be atrocious! - actually, it was Federror-like :o) against a Djoko having fully regained confidence. It was hard work for Rafa to even avoid getting bagelled (fortunately he did manage that)...

Whatever, congratulations to Djokovic and his fans. :hatoff:

Terrific tournament from Nole, beating Fed&Rafa back to back, big congrats. He's really dominating this year so far.

Wasn't the best final I've seen but it still had some great rallies and defense, both guys could have been a bit more agressive though and Nadal's serve went down the toilet after the 1st set.

IMO this could turn out to be be a huge win for Novak mentally, the fact that he won against Nadal even when the match went the distance(something he never did before).

Mr. Oracle
03-20-2011, 11:43 PM
To be honest, Nadal should never have lost the second set. Had he kept his nerve and found a few more first serves I have no doubt that he would have gone home with his nineteenth Masters Trophy.

Djokovic played well, however; credit to him for stepping it up in the second and third sets. I don't see anyone beating him until Monte Carlo.

This is kind of a rookie comment. Woulda coulda shoulda. Tennis is very much about the mental aspect. Can't hold it together, don't deserve to win. Champs win with mental toughness, especially when they are so evenly matched as these two are. Novak won because he was mentally tougher today.

Nadal has been struggling with his first serve a bit all tournament really, but it's just been a bit off, not catastrophically so. I wonder if he's been tinkering with it a bit, because it looked like a total technical collapse today. Was about as smooth as my backhand (and my backhand really likes the back fence).

ropey... absolutely ropey serving all tournament...

unlike nadal of old, it's crucial he has that 1st serve now if he wants the tournament wins on hard...

After the 1st set I was 100% sure Nadal was going to win. I can't remember last time Rafa won the 1st set and lost the match...for sure doesn't happen very often. In that 1st set Rafa was USO Rafa...almost unbeatable...he was serving well, returning well, forehand/backhand firing, completely outplaying Novak from the back...This continued for most of the 2nd set as well and then something changed. Nole started missing less and less, putting more power behind the shots, playing closer to the lines and more importantly he found his 1st serve (and his forehand was deadly mid 2nd set/3rd set) at important moments. Nole (or any other player for that matter) CANNOT beat Nadal with low 1st serve percentage. No serve, no win. Simple as that.
For whatever reason Nadal's serve went AWOL. Momentum shifted and after Nole took the 2nd brake it was all over. Had he only had 1 brake I'm sure Nadal would have came back into the match, but 2 brakes gave Nole pressure release and confidence to go after his shots and he managed to serve out the match without any problems.

WELL DONE NOLE!!!! But Rafa.......:eek:
At the end of the 1st and at the beginning of the second Nole's return was really bad, although Rafa's 1st serve was decreasing. Than Nole started to return at his best and Nadal wasn't able to keep the serve several times. In the same time the 1st serve fell down, Rafa started doing a huge quantity of forehand errors, I think Nole saved Rafa from the bagel just for his choice, because Nadal in the 2° and the 3° was a 50-100 Atp player...

The second set was even up to 2 all, but it seemed that Djokovic was changing his tactics up. In the first, Djokovic hit 50-50 to Nadal's forehand and backhand. In the second, he began to hit more to the backhand, a 75-25 ratio in this set, and it paid off.

Nadal's backhands began to fall short, he looked a bit slow and his anticipation was just a split second off, Djokovic was making Rafa hesitate just so much. And in a game of inches like tennis, that adds up. Nadal begins to make more errors.

Interesting. :)

Nadal had his chance early in the second but then his level... I don't even know what to say, I've never seen such a complete and utter collapse from him. Nole won fair and square today but Nadal is FIRM NUMBER 1...point wise and otherwise. Today was just a bad day. In fact if they were to play tomorrow again Nole wouldn't be favorite (50-50 on hard imo), even on hard (let alone clay/grass). What happened to Nadal mid 2nd set/3rd set is an anomaly...it just doesn't happen very often. That is why this loss is not going to hurt him much. He knows if he played like he did in the 1st set he would have won the match...and the scary thing is HE CAN play like he did in the 1st set for the WHOLE best of 5 match (we saw that in the USO). Today he had a bad day and Nole took advantage imo. Of course part of the reason he had a bad day is because of Nole's excellent play but what happened to Rafa in 3rd set does not happen often. Nobody can deny that.

The worry for Nadal will be if this happens again. He was beyond dreadful against Devvarman, couldn't find the court, but in a sense it didn't really matter - he was never going to lose. Wasn't very good against Karlovic either, in two of the sets.

However, this was a final, Nadal's territory. He was the better player, looked comfortable, and then his game self-destructed.

Above all, Nadal's game is built on mental strength, that gives him consistency and less errors than anyone else, and also allows him to bring his best in finals when it really matters. Neither happened today, without any apparent reason. I wonder if it's the start of something.

Having 2 bp helps...had Djoko had one...well we all saw how long it took him to win that 2nd set game. Nadal can sniff nerves from a mile away. I really think that 1 bp wouldn't have been enough for Djoko to win that 3rd. Getting 2nd was CRUCIAL for him (against Nadal that is).

I wonder if it's the start of something.

could be. as i said, the fact that Novak returned from one down and won it is a message that he can counter Nadal on the mental plain now. He first had to do this with Federer and that's out of the way now (3 in a row), regardless of what happens next time.

Novak's next big test is Nadal on clay in a final.

Finally Djokovic beat Nadal in a final :spit: Very impressive start to the year, but he should give his knee a good rest after Miami.

Nadal served badly throughout IW and was very lucky he had such an easy draw to the SF. Not sure what's up with his serving but he needs to fix that if he wants to do well in Miami.

He didn't start off those matches playing some of his best HC tennis only to inexplicably play like a junior thereafter.

Yep, that's the major difference. Never saw it happening at such an extent before, and one can only wonder... why?

zcess81
03-21-2011, 12:11 AM
Djokovic can't.

Murray's beat Nadal twice serving under 50%, including in Toronto last year, and Nalbandian did the same in Madrid in 07.

Yeah, but was Nadal playing like he did tonight in the 1st set?? Didn't think so. USO Nadal/ 1st set nadal in tonight's match CANNOT BE BEATEN without good 1st serve/cheap points. I firmly stand by that.

Nadal's mental strength is overrated.

Extremely. A hangover from how amazingly tough he was as a teenager (only Borg compares), but since then nothing to write home about. Much more akin to Federer, has confidence in his game in tight situations and got through most of 2010 by simply being way better than everyone else, but he sucks on BPs, basically throws the match when he's not feeling physically 100% and loses close matches often to average players (Lopez, Ljubicic, Baghdatis) all too often.

Nothing Nole had to do in the second and third set but stay on the court, Rafa took care of the rest.

could never be certain... but, that's where i kinda think the errors leak from... i've never seen rafa miss so many long - and he missed many in the second set... maybe he just said 'f*** it.. i am either gonna quicken the way i win on hard or lose trying...' ...and without the serve thats exactly what it looked like...

No, that was not it. Nole forced those errors, what people don't see specially none tennis players, and i am assuming that you are not the way you explain it. Nole is too fast for rafa after the second set. more power, mentally tougher. errors happen because the opponents is able to return them faster and the returning player does not have enough time to prepare a better shot. Rafa was rushed because Novak was faster and more pwoerful in the match. Damn i hate analysis from non tennis players freaking idiots. unbelievable explanations

42% is misleading too. It was in three phrases:

1) Opening set 57%. About right for Nadal, given he was serving with pace (slow court serve Nadal will have 70%, but at 10mph less on average).

2) Second set and opening two service games of third: 26%

3) Remaining two service games: back to 60%ish. Bit late though, given he was 0-4 by this stage.

That 26% was when he lost the match. He'd probably have won in straights either (and not really playing that well imo).

I`m a Djoker fan but I think Nadal is still better player than Novak. Nadal is the ultimate fighter and when he is on clutch no one beats him.
But Novak is not the same player as before. He`s mentally grown up, he keeps him self in the game even when its going bad for him. Somehow he manages to push out through tough periods in the game, waits for opponent to drop the level of play and then strikes back with agressive and confident game.

57% is not right. That's Soderling/Berdych serve %. Nadal hovers in late 60's, usually. Even with hard, flat serves in USO he was never below 60%.

25% in second set is atrocious - I am not sure I ever seen a lower serve % in any match from any player - even Mugray served in 30's when he got schooled in MC last year.

Third set was 45% - once again atrocious for Nadal's standards, easily 20% below his average.

Mind you, he struggled with serve the whole tournament. From amazing serve in the beginning of the year, to WTA serve now :o It's a disgrace. He can forget about defending Wimbledon with his current serve.

Not to mention 17/34 UE. Nadal usually makes 3 times less errors than that :o

Impressive stuff by D'Joke, winning sets 6-3 6-2 against Federer and Nadal in back-to-back matches is amazing. Scary form, I'm curious whether he is able to convert this form onto the clay season. Without beating Rafa on clay he can't advance to the No. 1 in the world but they never played on clay before with Djokovic on this level. Certainly they meet on clay before Roland Garros and we will know something more about D'Joke's chances to dethrone Rafa :)

Sure Djokovic served below his standards, but did he serve at 26% from the start of the second set to 0-4 in the third? Nadal was horrendous in those games. Shocking errors.

Of course Djokovic stepped up and converted when Nadal was struggling, but I can't for the life of me understand how Nadal's serve was beastly in the first and so quickly changed to truly truly dire in the blink of an eye.

Fed started winning majors 2 years before Nadal. If Fed won his last major in 2010, expect Nadal to win his last major in 2012. In 2013, the era of the players born in the early 1990s will begin.

But he will improve...he's healthy, he's still as confident as ever...he's just not in the right form at the moment...you simply cannot be in "top form" during the whole season, you can win, yes...I mean, Fed had "the aura" as some of you call it, but he wasn't playing like a god for the whole season...he won so many of those matches even before he walked on court...tennis is first and foremost, a mental game.
And I don't see Nadal being frustrated and worried, do you?

The two key things for him are health and scheduling...and I think he's learned his lesson. ;)

Funny these hatas beginning with the mantra: I don't have anything against Nole, I really like him, but...".

Anyway, nice trophy presentation and some highlights. Got a headache from the commentator though. Nole almost broke his back with that trophy.

Is there anyone who will deny that Djokovic is, in reality, the world's best player?

Me. Playing the best tennis and being the best two different things. He's around 4000 points behind the best currently.
