I mean it's never been that great, he could win a lot of cheap points with a good serve. Today he should won the first set after 4-1 lead.

No, he said many times for me that Del Potro serve is worse than before his injury.

Otherwise locyka I think just this isn't US Open court, much slower -> worse serve... even so he hasn't bad serve.

His serve is great, but not the best for a big guy.

Del Potro must improve his serve, locyka19 is right,

even before his injury his serve needed to be improved in 2009, of course he has free points ( aces, speed ) but his second serve is often predictable,

and he could improve his toss, I think his toss is too high and it can explain why he can have problem to secure his serve ( double faults )

How is it possible Del Potro's so good from the baseline for a big guy?

Mediocre at best. The USO 09 is the only tournament I've seen his serve resemble anything strong.

Watch more his matches, making opinion someones serve based on one match is discusting.

His serve is very good, he always does takes some pace off against Nadal and serves mainly to his backhand and trying to control rallies, court was just too slow.Like people said

BLUE CLAY.

His serve is very good

his serve is decent but not optimal for a guy who is 6 ft 7 in,

a very good serve --> Federer, Roddick, Karlovic, Raonic

he needs a smart serve, non-predictable second serve, better toss,

watch this video from Washington 2009, at 3'05'' Del Potro said that he needs to improve his serve :

In the later part of 2009 he was serving his way out of trouble over and over and over. Even with second serves. He's very far from that now.
He may never have Karlovic, Isner or Raonic's serve but his groundstrokes and movement are much better than theirs'.

Lack of confidence. 2009, he was hitting 130+ routinely.

Wouldn't it be scary if Del Potro learns how to serve like Raonic? They're about the same height, right?

Maybe because it reflects the rest of his game, which is crap?

a crap player can not win a grand slam and stay 2 years top 10 :o

and there is no link between the serve and the rest of the game, even a mug/brainless player can have a great serve,

so no excuse for Del Potro, he needs to improve that damn serve

I can only agree on that statement, Isner, Raonic, Karlovic, Querrey are living proofs.

Lack of practice :( Plus, he'll never been the same player he was in 2009, he'll be better

Del Potro's movement was the problem vs Nadal, and it will always be. It's why Nadal leads 5-3 head to head. When they met in 2009 though Nadal wasn't hitting down the line, so Del Potro's movement wasn't exposed. Nadal was playing defensive in 2009
