Del Potro in 2 :o

I'm gonna say Rafa, for the sole fact that Del Potro would have had (if this match is a night match) 2 1/2 days off, and he's a rhythm player. Rafa will come in intense and match tough, and I think that will make the difference.

Nadal been unimpressive this tournament, Delpo still trying to find more gears his serve, who knows

Delpo needs find more than 60% 1st serves in to have chance to win,

I'm so looking forward to this one! Nadal to revenge his last three matches versus del Potro.

Whoever says Del Robotro will win makes me laugh. Guy has one dimensional game, poor movement and was generally regarded as a nobody before his fluke USO. Nadal is superior to him as living are to the dead. World #1 will save tennis once again tomorrow and send this dull clown packing. You can quote this post later.

I didn't think Rafa would beat Ivo, now he has in such a fashion I think he'll be inspired to make the final. Isn't playing nearly well enough to trouble Nole when he gets there but probably enough for a still improving DelPo.

Hospital ward draw continues, let's see who else we can wheel out on a gurney to play Nadull. Del Potro should win if he's even at 50% but that's not very likely.

Nadull in 2, hopefully Del Pony proves me wrong :(

Del Potro in 3.

Nadal is pretty one dimensional too no? Does he ever have a PLAN B? Oh there is one actually...strategically timed injury time outs.

Dont cry like your hero Fed.
That olderer ballerina is gonna get humiliated by Djokovic again.

Del Potro vs Nadal Spartan semi,
winner to have a Spartan final vs Djokovic

Ballet dancers like Federer, Gasquet and Murray are too weak for the real top 3 - NADAL, DJOKOVIC, DEL POTRO

Delpo needs find more than 60% 1st serves in to have chance to win,

yes, this will be the key for Del Potro ---> he needs to increase his first serve percentage, with 47% first serve he will never beat Nadal, so he must secure his serve,

then other key can be the fighting spirit, like Miami@2009 he must believe in his chances despite the scoreboard ( Nadal had the double break in the third set ),

it can be a very good match if Delpo can secure his serve and raise his mental strength,

Nadal is clearly the favourite, no question about that, but I hope Del Potro will win in 3 sets

Nadal hasn't impressed me up to this point, and although I think Del Potro may well dominate this match early I don't think he has the fitness reserves required to beat Nadal on a pretty slow court. He looked temporarily exhausted in his match vs Kohly in the first set, and has looked short on energy several times in the latter stages of tournaments since his comeback. Against Verdasco in San Jose, flat. Against Roddick in Memphis, flat and fatigued. Against Tipsarevic in the Delray final he looked out on his feet but Tipsarevic contrived to choke every opportunity. Getting a walkover vs Robredo will actually have done him a big favour, worth sacrificing a bit of sharpness for the extra energy the rest will give him, but I don't think this will be enough.

Also, it's not like Del Potro has shown a level capable of beating Nadal since his comeback unless he has a very bad day.

I don't mind who wins this one, as I like both these guys and Nole. :)

Having said that, Del Potro couldn't get past Roddick and Verdasco last month (top 10 players) and I do question his fitness.

Rafa will have Friday off to recover from that draining QF against Dr Ivo to prepare for the Saturday semi, so he should be alright. I'll go with Rafa in 3.

I agree it didn't look like a physically draining match. Mentally it was tough, but Rafa is used to high intensity for long periods, and after a bit of a break after Australian Open the mental tight match is exactly what he needed :p

You must be imagining that Nole's going to dominate Nadal on clay, and at Wimbledon, not very realistic, the points Nadal achieves at that time of year will mathematically make it impossible for Nole to overcome the gap.

i am expecting rafa to win this one, del potro in my opinion is still nowhere near his 2009 level. with that said i do believe this is going to be a good test for del potro to see how far he has come. if he wins it would be great for his confidence so i am expecting a good match with rafa edging it out in the third set.

Match-up is the deciding factor here. Look at Davydenko, who's playing a crappy season still being capable of mopping Nadal in Doha.
I expect a battle, but it's Del Potro who's going to win this face off.

LocoPorElTenis

Nadal in 3, though it could go either way. None of them is at their best player, Delpo will be fresh and is as mentally tough as Nadal so an upset is possible but not very likely.

semifinals are nadal's bogey round.
he always struggles in semis.
go look at his semis history, even when he wins its an almighty struggle or he gets absolutely slaughtered.

expect a huge struggle for nadal or an absolute thrashing handed to nadal by del potro.

when u struggle against that indian guy and then karlovic, u got no hope against del potro and djokovic/federer.

atleast he defended his points from last year.

I don't know, Nadal was not that great yesterday. But he is also the only one who can beat Nole as of today, so i hope he wins in 2.

In the QF, Rafa won 78% of points on 1st serve, 84% of points on 2nd serve, 32 winners, 13 unforced errors. And having seen the match, I say Rafa is hitting the ball as well as he needs to to beat anybody. It's a different matchup of course, there will be longer rallies, but all signs are Rafa is in good enough form, moving great and hitting sharp :p

not entirely true: imagine this situation
Nole winning HC slams (USO, AO) = 4000pts
Nadal winning grass/clay slams (W, RG) = 4000pts

Nadal winning TM1000 clay tournaments: 3000pts
Nole winning 50% TM1000 HC tournaments: 3000pts

TMC: edge <- nole > nadal. Could be won.
Nole already has a slam in the bag

if Fed wins both his matches today, he will play 4 matches in 2 days ;)

but yes I know that Rafa is so easily tired, which explains all of his defeats :p

What has become the young man who played nearly 5 hours a few years ago then played another thriller 2 days later (Mathieu then Hewitt in RG, Verdasco then Fed in Melbourne) ?

As much as I want Delpo to take this one, he is not ready yet to beat a player like Nadal.
The other day I was watching a delpo's game from the '09 season and his movement on the court
was incredible for a guy of his height. He has not been able to reproduce that since he returned to
the tour. 1st serve maybe another key factor. Nadal in 2 I say.

This. Pretty even match up as Rafa is not playing his best and his first serve percentage has been mediocre the whole tournament. He barely got by Karlovic though the latter played extremely well. That being said Rafa has a tendency to rise to the occasion.

It will definitely be three sets. I can honestly see it go both ways. Rafa should win, since Delpo isn't playing as well as he did before the injury (though he is getting there). But after the Ivo match.. I just don't know.

Again, Dr. Ivo was on a run and playing well. I was impressed with how Rafa was able to read and absorb many of Ivo's first serves. And you always know there's a consistency about Rafa in tight moments. However, if Delpo finds the range tomorrow, he could knock Rafa off the court. He's one of the few who can.

Del Potro is looking better each tournament he plays.
Still the movement is too sluggish, the serve isn't working well and the forhand doesn't have the precision.
The endurance isn't there yet, he finally got it to a good point when the injury occured, right now he got a extra days rest which is critical.

What happened in the past has no meaning for this match, how Del Potro played a month ago means little also.
DelPo is playing like a #20 player or so, but no telling if he can raise his game or just have an "on" game.

He's done enough for this tournament, got some points, money, beat some quality opponents and more matches.
He's not looking that good but somehow just keeps winning.

At his age Potro should eventually be better than he ever was, even at his peak there were important areas he could improve.

It's good to have the real top 4 in the semifinals ;). I'll be glad with Delpo's tournament whatever the outcome of this match is. Nice to have you back viking!

Del Potro has only ever beat Nadal in 2009. There is a school of thought that regular Nadal won't lose to Del Potro. Makes this match very interesting

This makes absolutely no sense.

del Potro gets energy from the 2009 sun or something?

I am just very happy to se DelPo making a smooth comeback. He may not be at the top form yet but he is improving day by day. Good luck, Pony.

This is why I make it pay

This is going to be a blow out. Nadal has NOTHING to hurt Delpo. Topsin sits up all day and night for Pony to pound and pound. 6-2 6-2 for Del Potro. Del Po will hit him off the court with power and precision.

Open your eyes once in a while, you´ll see things more clearly.

This makes absolutely no sense.

It does make a lot of sense, if you accept Nadal was struggling with an injury for much of 2009. Funny to see how you all pamper Delpo because he is returning from an injury (and rightly so), yet dismiss Nadal so easily when he was in not so different situation.

Fact is, Delpo only beat an in-form Nadal once, in Miami, and that went to 3 sets and came after rafa had taken AO and IW, meaning he was bound to lose sometime.

the return of the king :worship:

this match reminded me why these 2 are my favorite players, they really bring the best out of each other. rafa has to thank del potro if he wins this tournament because he practically played himself into form in this match.
rafa looked really uncomfortable out there especially in the beginning. had this been a faster surface i don't think del potro would have allowed him to come back so strong especially after the break. he is getting back to his old level much faster than people here are willing to see. with rafa bagging the channel slam i think there is a good chance we are going to see a del potro-nadal final at the usopen this year. this is the beginning of a new duopoly that is going to last a while bookmark it.

Delusional Nadal hater thinks all the Nadal-Delpo matches will be like that USO semifinal when Delpo played his best tennis ever and Nadal was serving badly with an ab injury. Reality check. Delpo is tough but Nadal can beat him. Now be careful that Delpo doesn't beat Fedull for the 3rd straight time :o

Great tournament for Delpo. The movement, physicality, and subsequently the forehand clearly aren't there yet but making big strides.
