the odds are with NOvak but he has not really had any quality competition so far this tourament, i am going with the fact that Richard may surprise him and Novak may not be as warmed up as everyone assumes. Gasquet in 3. this may be more hope than expectation, but it certainly is possible, Gasquet's form appears to be back!

That wouldn't be more surprising that him beating Roddick at Wimbledon....
Djokovic is obviously the favourite though, especially on that surface.

Djokovic has had no real competition this tournament. the players he has faced where at nowhere the form of Gasquet. Gasquet's movement, BACKHAND, and serve all seem to be in very good shape. Djokovic could have a bad day.... there are certainly reasons why one could predict a Gasquet victory, i mean for example, Roddick has given Djokovic lots of trouble and Gaquet just handed it to RODDICK. certainly Roddick and Gasquet have very different games, but all the same, it makes you wonder if Richard can give Djokovic a run for his money

“I played with him in practice one week ago,” he said. “He played unbelievable, too. He's a favorite of the match, for sure. I'm confident I can play a great match (1). I think I can play well in a big match against him (2). I feel confident, so I have nothing to lose (3). This is the best way to play a good match.”

Is this like a mantra or something :D
If you repeat it enough times, you'll psyche yourself up for the match.

oh well, with gasquet you never know... (but voted Novak in 2)

Actually no he's still got a pretty big fanbase for a player of his "caliber" the last 3 or 4 years. Lost a few gloryhunters like clay death but all in all he's still a very popular player.

Picking Djokovic to win easily 6-2, 6-2.

Had picked Djokovic to easily beat Troicki and then persuaded it would be a match so picked a 7-5, 6-4 score. Not making that mistake again.

he had had a lot of difficulty against Tomic : 6-4 6-4 but Tomic had many many break points and they nearly won the same number of points.

Anyway, Troicki is a very irregular player : like in Doha where he had played very good first matches and then played like shit against Fed.

Gasquet doesn't fear Djokovic, he has played a training session with him, so he knows how he plays, and being the underdog suits him well.

Nole is in fine form so he should take this in straight sets, especially if Gasquet plays as far back behind the baseline as he has done at times. That said, Richard should be able to escape the ever-expanding list of complimentary customers to Nole's bakery.

Gasquet Got hammered by Fed in Dubai! I think Djoko will win but not as convicingly as before. In the final I think Nadal will bring Djoko crashing back down to earth with a thump. That,s if Djoko gets that far. Awesome start to the year, But Nadal is so strong at defending and gets evil top spin on the ball. A fully fit nadal would do to djoko what he does to everyone . it,s so boring it,s painful. Blocking the ball back then a wicked counter attack. Nadal has to be the dullest tennis player I have ever seen. No lobs, no drop shots no flair. Grate at net but so boring! He,s the Terminator of tennis. Djokovic is more like a artist. Nadal is boring!

he doesnt fear him cause he knows him too well, theyre same generation and I reckon they get along nice.

but gasquet is mentally very weak player, more or less permanently low on confidence (unfortunately). vs novak, he already lost the battle of minds.

The real question is how many games will Gasquet take
Not too many if you ask me...

zcess81
03-17-2011, 08:52 PM
If Gasquet keeps on standing 5m behind the base line he has NO CHANCE...only way for him to stay competitive in this match is to stay close to the baseline and take the ball early. He has to take chances, otherwise forget it (unless Novak plays like shit). Those short balls he was feeding to Roddick the other night will be easy pickings for Nole. Also, Roddick for some reason kept going after Gasquet's backhand the other night...that was CRAZY...no way Roddick can stay with Gasquet backhand to backhand...that was just plain stupid....however, Novak has one of the best backhands in the business soooo he can easily go backhand to backhand with Gasquet. Honestly, everything Gasquet does Novak does much better. Some might argue about the backhand, but I think Novak's backhand is better than Gasquet's. Gasquet hits his backhand harder and flatter but Nole can do more with it. He can change direction with it more easily, hit it with more spin etc...basically it all boils down to how Nole plays. If he plays even 80% of his abilities he should win...comfortably. He has better forehand, backhand (imo), moves better, mentally stronger, he is better front runner and most importantly, he doesn't choke on big points. But if Nole is off his game Gasquet will for sure have his chances. We will see.

Hoping at least for a competitive match, Nole brushing opponents aside with bagels and breadsticks surely isn't going to be benefitting him too much in terms of match toughness, especially if he runs into Roger and Rafa later on in the week.

I'll be happy if Richie manages to win at least 6 games.

Considering recent trends, I guess it would have been fairer to have a poll asking how many games would Gasquet win in this match.

Will he be able to win more than a game? It seemed like a tough challenge for two previous opponents.. Djokovic is clearly playing tennis at a very high level.

Gasquet has what it takes to challenge/beat Djokovic only of Novak is not on top of his game. If Novak has a bad day and Gasquet plays great he definitely can win...BUT only if he keeps the ball deep (some of those balls in Roddick match were so short!) AND he has to play at the base line. Against Roddick he was like 5m behind the base line! Even 70% Djokovic would beat him playing like that. Gasquet HAS to take chances, take the ball early and try to blast Novak off the court because he will not beat him any other way. Does Gasquet have enough firepower to blast Novak off the court? I don't think so, Novak is too fast and defends too well...but, like I said, if Novak is not as good as usual in that department, then Gasquet will have his chances for sure.

I really makes me upset, because the organizers were really expecting Rodick on the other side of the draw........
