Absolutely entertaining match. Gasquet's backhand was on fire, and the Murphy/Roddick chronicles introduce another chapter. Lmao

Richie definitely deserved this match. Roddick needed to stop acting like a bitch. But his Hulk Smashing sure almost paid off.

A THRILLING Tiebreak as well!

Best Quotes:

Roddick: "Doesn't it emasculate you when they tell you what you can and cannot call?"

Murphy: "...in fact, I'd rather not be talking right now."
Roddick: "Perfect. We can both agree on that."

Murphy: "Warning for Racquet abuse."
Roddick: "I'm giving YOU a warning for incompetent officiating."

What a match.

What drama.

Amazing winners in the tiebreak, Roddick running forehand down the line after long sprint, Gasquet with 2nd serve (off of true quality Roddick 2nd serve wide) backhand return up the line for clean winner to seal the match from a mile behind the baseline.

Roddick to Gasquet at net hand shake: "Too good".

Freaking yess! :bounce:

A brilliant match all round; one sided for the vast majority of it, but then came the spirited Roddick comeback. Despite that, Gasquet managed to keep it calm in the tie-break and that return winner on match point I think summarised his brilliance in this match, and all week really. Great composure saving the set points as well; anything could have happened in the 3rd set.

I liked the tactics that Gasquet used today (dropshot was effective bar the one he attempted when trying to save bp :o) and he was sharp passing Roddick left and right. Reading the serve when it was going in helped greatly too.

Gotta give credit where it's due, though. Roddick managed to put the Murphy arguments behind him and hit a couple of stunning winners to get back into this match. But in the end Gasquet weathered the storm with clutch play of his own.

His chances against Djokovic are slim to none, but I am sure of a competitive match should he continue to play at this level. Getting two top 10 wins in a row sounds almost too good to be true but he's done it, and done it impressively.

I think that from Gasquet's serve game at 4-3,Roddick considerably upped his level, producing some shots he didn't even dare trying until then.
If Gasquet choked a little bit, that was on Roddick's serve at 4-2.He should have really broken him there.

I had the same memories, up to middle of the second set they just kept coming. Winner/UEs 33-17 for the whole match, he was clearly the better player, I was afraid when he was rebroken, Roddick started playing better, but after he saved the three setpoints, I was sure he would prevail. Return winner on MP.:worship:

Gasquet's BH began to get real short during the end of that 2nd set. It seems to me that when he's really pressured he plays it way too safe.

That BH isn't erratic; it's gorgeous. But when under pressure, his BH definitely begins to suffer a bit. Roddick may not have the best tools for it. But you can bet Nole will crush it.

Oh. Article. lol

Anyways, this was more entertaining for what it shouldn't have been; a melodrama. It was good, too. For once Roddick was right, but Murphy should have never mentioned to Andy that

1) The Let machine seemed broken
2) He'll try to fix it. (Murphy will fix it... oh boy)
3) Murphy tried to fix it by playing around with the Let machine's 10 settings, which he stated to Roddick after his completely clear serve was declared a Let. What followed was what could be considered a castration of Murphy's manhood via Roddick.

New year, same old bullshit play from Andy, making opponents look like geniuses for a day, then they inevitably drop back to their normal playing level and lose in the next round. It's been like this for years, and it seems he'll never learn/change.

Fergus Murphy needs to be banned from officiating Roddick's matches, it's like Andy playing with fire, he always seems to get distracted arguing with him.

I'm neither a hater or fan of Gasquet but part of me is happy to see him playing with some confidence again, it's been a while, and he's too good a player to drop off the tennis planet. Even if he loses to Novak next, it's nice to see him on the comeback. :hatoff:

YES! Vintage Gasquet - from the sizzling backhands and angle passing shots to oh yes the double fault to loose serve when trying to close it out BUT in the end he held his nerve and ripped off a winner to win it.

Good stuff from Richie - very few UEs and out aced Roddick.

Best part was every time Roddick had a meltdown Richie made him look like a bigger ass by clamly ripping a winner on the very next point.

The end of that match was like a trainwreck. Entertaining, fascinating moments, moments where you wanted to tear your hair out.

A-Rod should have won that second set. He FINALLY started playing with authority from about the moment he argued with Fergus Murphy until the tiebreak and that led to him having several set points, which he played horribly. Both players served DFs, both were choking, both showed a lack of confidence, but Gasquet was the overall better player on the day and deserves the win for competing hard. At times it was vintage Richie. He'll need to play better than he did in set 2 to have any shot at even threatening Nole.

Superior Groundstrokes > massive serve. I think roddick is looking and hoping that his serve was not that big so he could have developed his ground strokes better when he was young. Specially now adays that baseline style is the predominant style of play. He needs peter lundgren as his coach

Really good match for Gasquet, Roddick was boiling in the firts set and in the beginning of the second. Gasquet was perfect, his backhand yesterday was amazing!! Roddick raise up after his quarrel with the refree but he did very bad errors during his 3 set point. After that, Gasquet restarted to dominate the game and won the tie... Good on Richie to not let rodduck's diva-esque  behavior affect him. Can an umpire put him in his place once and for all? Why are they ball-less?

Gasquet was the better player :yeah:

If Gasquet keeps on standing 5m behind the base line he has NO CHANCE...only way for him to stay competitive in this match is to stay close to the baseline and take the ball early. He has to take chances, otherwise forget it (unless Novak plays like shit). Those short balls he was feeding to Roddick the other night will be easy pickings for Nole. Also, Roddick for some reason kept going after Gasquet's backhand the other night...that was CRAZY...no way Roddick can stay with Gasquet backhand to backhand...that was just plain stupid....however, Novak has one of the best backhands in the business soooo he can easily go backhand to backhand with Gasquet. Honestly, everything Gasquet does Novak does much better. Some might argue about the backhand, but I think Novak's backhand is better than Gasquet's. Gasquet hits his backhand harder and flatter but Nole can do more with it. He can change direction with it more easily, hit it with more spin etc...basically it all boils down to how Nole plays. If he plays even 80% of his abilities he should win...comfortably. He has better forehand, backhand (imo), moves better, mentally stronger, he is better front runner and most importantly, he doesn't choke on big points. But if Nole is off his game Gasquet will for sure have his chances. We will see.

Impressive stuff from Gasquet.

I don't think Roddick has a terrible personality or a terrible game, come on. I'm no fan of the guy, but he hasn't been on the top for so many years without some talent! And I actually like his personality off the court, he's a very witty and intelligent guy. I don't think there is another player just like him on the tour.

Never a bad day when Rawdick loses.

Why the h8 m8?

But seriously, good win for Richie. Now go disappoint us in the next round.

On a side note, Roddick just loves to hit weak approaches into his opponent's strength, doesn't he.

I think he's fairly good looking but yeah, his game is horrible, unless you like all-serve-all-pushing.

Yeah, his game is horrible. How anyone can prefer Roddick's game to players like "Nadull" or "Boredo" (or Gasquet) is really beyond me. But well, to each his own

I'm a Roddick fan, too. But there's a difference between McEnroe and Roddick.

When McEnroe gets angry, he can direct the anger and play more aggressively.

When Roddick gets angry, it's as if he doesn't play at all sometimes. He's too busy mouthing off, and he usually loses.

I always say to the TV: "Andy, just say Fuck you, get the fine, and play..."

No, he isn't, not even in the tantrum area, let alone when it comes to entertaining game. While Mac annoyed me with his antics (always felt there was a lot of gamesmanship involved in it), it also had an element of show. Duck is just being an ass and my only reaction is to roll my eyes and think, God slap him with some penalty and lets move on. It's also kind of pathetic that his tantrums are reserved for matches he thinks he should be winning. I'm yet to see one when he's playing the big dogs. Perhaps he should ponder the fact that on those situations he's mainly focused on his game and winning the match on merit.

You are one of kind muchacho, how on earth can you mock Andy ''wannabe a competitive baseliner'' Roddick because he loses to one of the best single handed bh in the game, when your idol a.k.a ''wannabe a slam winner'' Andy Murray just got humiliated by an insane player like Donald Young...

You posting is almost a better comedy show then Fools and horses or Jerry Seinfeld, just too good... :worship:

>____> I'm surprised you even have the guts to laugh at another player.

As for being entertained by tantrums, I was heavily entertained by the Gasquet-Roddick match. Though Roddick acted like a jerk, his temper tantrums are amazingly witty.

Look at the bright side, at least he didn't say he'd shove a tennis ball down someone's throat :rolls:

And I'd easily take a one-slam wonder over someone who doesn't have any slams period. People need to recognize that only a handful of players left in the entire player roster actually has a slam, and Roddick is one of those.. what.. 5... lmao

It's sad that a one Grand Slam is treated like it's a Break Point; it has to be consolidated with another GS win.

There is no shame in losing to Gasquet the way he's playing these days! Did you even see the match? He was solid the entire time, extremely good backhand and a good forehand as well. He was outplaying Roddick and clearly deserved to win. I don't see why you think this is so funny considering he was once a top 10 player and he is clearly on his way back to that level again..

I find him funny, but in a different way> the way you have your small childish delights watching a wind-up duck prancing around :D
