Well... Pretty easy.

Yesterday, Chela asked via twitter how to play to Federer.
Hahaha, I really like Chela's sense of humour.

Played a little sloppy at points, and Chela wasn't that great (double faulting on set point :o) but a good win for Olderer.

True. Chela's clay south american season was way better than this.
But Chela is a claycourter specialist... Maybe there's the big difference between this and that Chela.

It wasn`t that great.Chela was really poor and didn`t put a lot of effort in it.
Federer certainly played a lot better in Doha for instance against Tsonga or Davydenko

Yup, this is the new Fed, trashing those poor lower ranked guys, but will fold easily when a real player comes along...
P.S. Chela serve was awful

The first set reminded me of the Federer of old; controlled forcing play and few unforced errors. On that form in the first set he could compete with Djokovic and have a good chance of winning. Second set saw far more errors although Chela's form did not improve.

It was a very assured performance from Federer. The first set was in in cruise control; it is evident that he likes to play against people who hit very flat and without too much variation. In the second set he played a few more loose shots but still should have won the set 6-1. Still a 6-0 6-2 scoreline will be reassuring to him going forwards in this tournament, but it was aided somewhat by a poor serving performance from Chela.

Federer used the drop shot effectively against an opponent who often has trouble coming forwards towards the net, although the strategy may not yield as much success in the future against players who have good passing shots. He also had an effective kick serve on his 2nd serve and positioned himself more towards his backhand to rip big forehand winners off Chela's 2nd serve.

Decent and comfortable victory by Fed.
No adrifting to Mirkaland-Brainfarting, except early on in the 2nd set where he allowed Chela to rebreak. Not that it was much of a problem as the eventual scoreline shows.

Of course all Fedfans should remind themselves that is was Chela who he was playing today, but at least he's showed still to be able to dispatch a 'minor' player with ease. It's been a while that I've seen Fed feed a routine bagel to an opponent.
Well done! :)

Not really a contest. Chela has no weapons whatsoever to hurt Fed on a hard court. I liked that Fed really attacked the high bouncing serves for direct winners, but then again Chela's serve isn't really a gage for anyone's returning ability.

All in all, a good day at the office, but doesn't tell anything about how he'll fare when he faces a top player.

independently from the opponent, I saw Fed hit the ball very well tonight.

The movement didn't look as good to me but the racket shot was sharp with displays of "real talent"

Imo he played better against Davydenko in Doha and against Lacko in Melbourne but still I'm very glad with that :)

Bonnie : you keep on saying "it was only Chela" and so on, as usual you are a real expert in "cold water" ... but well you know it's not after a match like that that I think he will make the grand slam or even win Indian wells

I don't know if it's so useful preventing people from becoming deluded ;)

Personally I just want to simply enjoy the pleasure seeing him play that well, being glad at least for tonight :D

As this is directed to me personally, I just want to say, "don't misunderstand me" - I'm not downgrading Fed's great match of this evening, of which I am very glad of course, I'd just like to see people keep things in perspective.

I've too many times witnessed Fed playing great for a couple of matches, only to lose it in (semi-)finals and such, so I'm not drawing any conclusions about his chances against the likes of folks like Djoko, Berdych, etc., as of yet. Not even to mention Rafa, who feels at home at this particular surface very well.

As for your last sentence, I cannot agree with you more! :D

Roger played great. Chela definitely helped in some way that can't be seen even by the poor stats, his weak serving definitely made it easier for Roger to do some of those great return winners, and he got a bit lazy chasing down some makeable balls in the 2nd set in my opinion, but I liked what I saw from Fed. Still favouring Nole in a potential matchup between the pair of them, but never mind, it's just a pleasure to watch Roger when he's on form like today which is what I enjoy most as a fan at this point.

you're right about his high variations of level, you're always right to remind that, this is good cold water, saying "be careful Roger" in the beginning of second set when he has won the first set like against Sod in RG last year :yeah:

but it also goes the other way round : after previous match against Andreev you said something like "it's not encouraging, if you don't increase your level Roger, you're going to be crushed by Djokovic" : well as you see, he could increase his level, he doesn't like playing Andreev, we quite know that.

I mean it's rational to say "nothing is given, his level varies a lot" but let's still enjoy the day without thinking too far, sometimes when I read you after a match like that I feel this "cold water" wastes a little bit my present "warmness" ;)

You're right that it's not Fed's 2004-2006, now it's Olderer and it's "day by day", but well "let's carpe diem"

You grasp in 1 sentence the difference between Federer 2004-2007 and now.

His movement and balance was better in the past which resulted in fewer unforced errors and returning serve better because he moved better. He was able to execute his game better.

His game is now more complete and tactically more flexible but it does not compensate for the areas of decline. Sometimes he now looks slower and not the player who returned the Roddick better than anybody - very evident in Wimbledon final 2009 when he only broke serve once compared to 2003 to 2005 finals.

Roger is at a stage now where he is fighting age/state of mind with raw talent. He's still the most talented player on tour, and probably ever. I hope he takes this title and puts the serb in his place.

The original draw was quite even for the both sides of the draw.
There's no real deal in blaming a top player for his presumed difficult opponents bolting out before they get to meet said top player.

But what the hell are you saying here? Fed's draw still contains the like of players as Djokovic and Berdych. I understand you think that those are 'hardcourt mugs' as well.

Huh?

Good to see you repeating that mug era bullshit in Roger's match thread as well. And as for Rafa fans, did you see, and you should have being the one of the frontrunners, how many Fedtards were complaining about Rafa's draw in Rafa match thread? The truth is there's no comparison at all between Fed's and Rafa's draws this time :

no Chela is not a mug, he's number 27 in the world, he's had a good clay season, and yesterday the first set was 6-0 but many games were tight despite Fed playing very well,

Chela is not a Sweeting or De Voest or even Devvarman.

I know on MTF everybody is "mug", even Cilic  , but yet it's not a reason to lose any reason and mix up everything

Juan, maybe you should ask me for a tip how to play Roger.
And what I cook for dinner too. :D

Why does Roger have to play so well everytime he plays Seppi or Chela? He probably likes their relatively weak serves. But still, no matter how hard they abuse his backhand side it looks so solid which is not the case against many other players.

Whatever, Miami next, then bring on the clay! :rocker2:

The scoreline looks pretty nice but it tells absolutely nothing about Roger's form. Chela is old, tired and has never had any particular weapons against top players on this surface.
Even a double bagel would be thoroughly meaningless.

I liked the match and also was happy to see Federer didn't just get an early break and work through it 6-3, 6-4 like he sometimes does, but tried to push it on every Chela's serve. Also ratio of Winners/errors was quite good.
