Kolya  choked when he served for the match in set 2 and the rest is history. Congrats to Stan.

Kolya was serving for the match in the second set. :o His mentality is preventing him from winning more matches and gaining confidence. It's a downward spiral.

Wawrinka :yeah:

Very good 2nd serve to save a break point in the last game and nice backhand at match point. Denko still struggles with tie-breaks, will fall in the ranking again, last year was in the third round in IW. Starting with Miami he can fight to be seeded at Roland Garros, last year didn't play between IW and Halle, no points to defend in two months.

Davydenko lost b/c his 2nd serve went awol, and he was taking pace off his 1st.

Stan was doing a little bit of what Federer does in his matches against Kolya, in that he was lurking a little bit behind the baseline and really ballbashing Nicolai to death with some heavy shots. Whenever that happens, Davydenko has to take an ackward step backwards to put it back in play..

Wawrinka was crap. So many errors (although really nice winners at 4-4 in 3rd set though), his range is way off - was missing just countless of the most basic shots going, often donating away 2 or 3 futures level errors a game.

Bad tactics too, always here the play is to bounce it up above Davydenko's forehand, his record is terrible for that reason.

Davydenko looked pretty good, solid aggressive hitting, then served for the match........

what makes this more satisfying is the fact that fixer lost to wawrinka who is a bit of a mug himself.

davy still looks a step slower... not doing the occasional heavy damage while cutting off the court like he used to... on a couple of big points was hoping davy stayed away from that backhand of stans in the last set... only to find wawrinka unleashing the beast...

but, i do think davydenko is hitting it just as clean as ever... movement tho, not sure...

This match just shows the difference in confidence between these two men currently. Davy was the better player, until the end of the second set, when he was ahead a break twice, but couldn't get the job done. Wawa starting hitting with more authority and missing less, and it's like Davy had no clue how to counter that. It was a pretty high quality match but Davy got less aggressive in the third set and that really cost him. Also, it's very hard to win without a legitimate serve, especially in tight matches. Wawa teed off on Nikolay's serve in that third set.

All in all, a decent performance wasted for Davydenko. His game is about 85% there from where it was, but the mind isn't.

Continues 2 good stats this year, 7-2 (.777 compared to his .500 in the past 52 weeks, and .46something career) in TBs so far and 7-0 in deciding sets. (both stats slightly exaggerated though due to the calibre of opponents :rolls:)

Interesting stat: Has yet to play a leftie this year after 18 matches.

the main change of momentum was due imo to Wawrinka improving after a bad period between the end of first set and beginning of second set.

At that moment it looked too easy for Davydenko and Wawrinka looked bad.

I think the key moment was the first counterbreak by Wawrinka in second set : Stan really went for his shots, Kolya answered well but finally a little bit of luck turned that game in favour of Wawrinka.

Davydenko immediately broke again, but if Wawa had not broken at that moment, I think he would not have gone back.

Later Davydenko was a little bit tight when serving for the match, but Wawrinka started being very confident and playing well from that moment as well.

Wawrinka's serve was also a key : Davydenko doesn't have the same quality.

And I agree with somebody describing Wawrinka's tactics to hit very hard from very far when he went back : it indeed looked like some of Fed's matches against Davydenko and especially their one in Melbourne 2010.

Davydenko was encouraging, playing better than I've seen recently, concentrating on playing in a smoother rhythm, forcing less, and I don't think he must be too much blamed for the defeat : Wawrinka was more responsible for it, and a little bit of luck at some key moments (for instance Voo de Mar speaks of that great second serve when Davydenko could counterbreak when Wawrinka served for the match : imo this shot was really lucky, very often people say "great balls" for great second serves but would call it "choking" a few centimeters further  ... there were some other lucky moments in that match for Wawrinka like that first counterbreak in second set).

But the problem for Davydenko is ... this bad scenario, bad luck will surely not help his confidence, which is clearly what he needs now. I think if he had turned this match in his favour, he would have been in the right direction, now I just hope he doesn't lose it while he was in the good direction for the rhythm of his game.
