I generally think that it is absurd when people draw harsh conclusions after a best of three set match, but I am now convinced (perhaps I'm late on the bandwagon) that Murray will never win a Grand Slam. Never in their worst of days would the top players ever lose to a player like Donald Young, who has few weapons and is incredibly error prone. Murray doesn't have the heart, intensity, or inner fortitude to ever win a Grand Slam.

This will probably be the biggest upset of 2011. DY had his moments of brilliance, but still he managed to beat Murray despite all the double faults and unforced errors. I really believe Murray's got a serious mental problem that's causing him to play this way.

Andy Murray will be back with a bang in Indian Wells

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you all know, everyone seems to have jumped on Murray's back the past 3 weeks.

1. Australian Open loss being called pathetic. I for one think it was an unlucky loss. He came up against an opponent who is usually not good enough to beat him. Alas, Murray played crap and nothing worked on the day, meaning he lost...to Djokovic, of all people.

2. The loss in Rotterdamn. 6-4 6-1 after a 3-0 lead to Baghdatis. This one was different. Murray was there for match practice and has said that his off court life is more important atm, until Indian Wells.

He is in Dubai the week after next, but expect an early loss. If he does go far in that event, he may feel he needs more points or he needs more match practice, but his sights are set on a return to form in Indian Wells.

Last year, he performed poorly in both Indian Wells and Miami, but this year he is looking for titles there. The sting of the Australian Open loss has gone, he has said so, so he should have no trouble getting back into form.

Look out, Murray is on a mission. He will be back in Indian Wells....

Muzza would have lost to anyone today. He didn't look motivated at all, sometimes it seemed like he was tanking so little effort he was putting in. That 4-2 game in the second set was telling. He was 40-0 and all of a sudden he gave away the next three points in a ridiculous manner. Young didn't really have to do much to win this.

First round and already two seeds are out, Ferrer and Murray. Talk about the unexpected.

Who has Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic lost to in the last several years in a Master's Series event that are even close to as bad as Donald Young? Never in a million years would the three of them ever lose to this Young at a Master's Series event, even if they were sick/injured/etc.

If you saw the match, Young didn't even play particularly well, with a good handful of double faults and unforced errors. Murray laughing between points, hitting multiple unforced errors that even bounced before they went into the net, and double faulting time and again on bigger points is insane for a player that is supposed to be a Slam hopeful.

Again, I generally am the first to refute harsh claims after a best of three set loss, but this loss at Indian Wells is REALLY, REALLY bad for a multitude of reasons.

Getting used to the conditions shouldn't be an excuse, he played awful and so he lost. He even played a doubles match yesterday and that should have helped him get used to the conditions.

Ridiculous result. The Don has no business beating a guy like Murray, even on a bad day. But congrats to him for easily the biggest win of his career.

Murray is just mentally checked out...IMO he really needs to take a few months off.

Will be interesting to see if a win over a top player like this will give The Don a confidence boost and help him realize some of his potential. If he beats Robredo and mentally destroys him into retirement then I will have to become The Don's biggest fan. Do it Don.

what about rochus then? does he have any weapons?

No, not particularly, but he's not error machine himself either. But the main point is all those players played an excellent match, they had to win it. Not sure who would say that for Young's performance.

the don is here alright fats...
Rochus played really well, anyway I don't believe the defeats you all quote are comparable to that : here there's clearly a mental problem in Murray

i used to think that murray badly needed a coach... now i'm of the opposite opinion... i dont think there is any getting thru to that... guy deffo needs space...

I hope he can build on this win, since the Americans surely need a younger guy to step up. ;)

I imagine the american media will claim Young as a multiple slam winner now... again.Maybe... until his next loss.

WTF is going on with Murray? Is he in a post-AO funk or did he tank to concentrate on doubles? () Whatever it is, I want to see him back winning matches again soon. ;)

Are you that afraid of Rafa's chances at IW?

It always puzzles me to see folks ranting-or-enjoying some 'top'-player being ousted before his so-called designated time, apparently being frightened of said player.
If those happen to lose against a so-called minor 'mug', why do you think that guy would have had any chance against the real top players?

Huge congrats to Young. I only saw a few points in the tiebreak (was getting ready to go see a shitty movie :() so I have no idea how the match went. But I can definitely believe that Murray was lethargic. He looked that way from what little I saw.

Maybe he DOES need to take a break from tennis. Three straight losses has to be a little unsettling to him (Djokovic in Melbourne, Baghdatis in Rotterdam and Young today). He needs to solve whatever problem that's plaguing him.

I still despise Murray though :)

Murray is a joke and a joker. He's got no bottle and is suffering from his aussie lose and can't get over it just like last year. It's a typical GB reaction. The England cricket team is similar. Can't handle jack shit. It's got talent but can't do fuck all with it. peace. And i thought Clownga's trashing was a bad performance. Now this is a tragedy, i have a VERY bad feeeling about Murray for the next weeks. Clay is coming and i am not sure this is where he will get some confidence back.

The doubles is Murray's priority right now. He deserves a fine for that non performance.

I haven't been a Donald Young fan, but it was good to see how much this win meant to him.

When it comes to Americans, Young and Harrison I like, Isner and Querrey bore me to tears, and Roddick and Blake are basically done.

This. I like Young's game much more than his personality, but hope springs eternal. At least he's not a smarmy frat type like Blake.

I dunno about that.He had enough time to prepare for IW too and then he plays a shocker.

Probably busy thinking about what he is now going to change his existing username into next, I mean, it's really sad :spit:, he's changed it from (pretty sure there were other ones in there as well) Sunset_Vista=Glory=25 To Life=Word Life=Typhoon=Planet Funk=Terra Massive FAIL= "insert"?

Seriously though, I hope Murray gets his act together quickly, and does better in Miami, he can really use Miami as a good opportunity to gain a whole heap of ranking points since he had an early exit there last year. Something is mentally wrong with him, whatever it is, hope he manages to find a way out of his current funk (he has lost 3 consecutive matches- Nole at AO final, Baggy at Rotterdam, now DY at IW).

You will be surpised that he actually finds an excuse for this gross loss. Stating that the not-so Young is the great future champion of USA that will win multiple grand slams and beating the divine Murray was all he needed to enter the top 10. wait, wait, and prepare for a titanic laugh.

Well Donald Young, who has been championed for a few years now, has at least had that big win.

If this season turns out to be the one last year (in the first 3 and a half months have been almost carbon copies), then I wouldn't expect too much from Murray before the grass court season beckons. On the basis of the performance against Young he doesn't 'deserve' to be in the top 4 - although I recognise that is a subjective statement to make. If there's any consolation though, he only defends 190 points from IW/Miami 2010 and he has done no worse here than he did at Miami just over 11 months ago.

It is a shame as he knows he can beat even the top players if he focuses well. Andy is approaching the peak years in his career, Federer's relative demise at Grand Slams will increasingly provide opportunities; but early indications seem to suggest that it is Djokovic rather than Murray who will capitalise.

Now I do think Young deserves credit for the best win of his career so far. Saying that he's the 'real deal' may be a bit premature, but I was impressed with what I saw. He certainly had the capacity to break and close out a match against someone ranked almost 140 places higher than him, whereas other qualifiers in his situation might have fallen short in the end. But anyway, it's nice to see him do well in front of his home crowd.

I think that is very easy to fall over Murray especially with a defeat like this one. Particularly I don`t like Murray (not even him and his tennis either). But people should be realistic and bear in mind that he reached the finals of AO a couple of months ago and he could have had a real bad day. Under my opinion I think he is still a serious contender to win a GS yet.

Well, I just think Andy doesn't give a shit for this kind of events after another painfull AO final loss. And I can understand him.

Even if he doesn't win a match till Queen's, it means nothing.
He'll be sharpening his teeth for grass season as one of the favourites for Wimby. :rocker2:

I don't see him winning Wimby, at best rather the US Open, since he has so many problems with slam finals, the pressure in Wimbledon will be worse than anywhere, it would be a great surprise to see him go over that (but well when Lendl won his first slam in RG it was also a surprise, not to speak about Chang ;) )

yes, but for your pleasure I will also say that Djokovic was already much more mature in 2006-2007.

yes a click may happen but his mental flaws were already there.

Maybe Murray is the kind of guy who should hire Lundgren, to think about leaving mommy and doing silly things other than playing Playstation ;)

Gasquet unfortunately had too bad an experience now to stop being the "mummy's nice child"

I wonder why Corretja is still with him. I mean, after everything that has happened and his last results, you'd think he would be looking for coaches already. Murray is too passive in many aspects.

Are people still calling him passive???

Did you see this match?
He went for too much at times, and he was hitting his groundstrokes pretty hard.

The outcome of this match was simple:

Murray was rusty, played well at the beginning but got worse and worse.
Young played very well, started out great, got a bit worse, but then kept up his consistent great level in the rest of the match.

Murray didn't find a way back (happens to everyone a few times a year) and lost.
Simple result, disappointing, but not horrendous.

Miami next!

Muggray was rusty and with not a very high confidence whereas Young had nothing to lose.

Sarcasm and puns aside, the problem was Murray completely trying to play a game he doesn't master. It's not a coincidence Murray thrives when playing defensive tennis, because that's ultimately what makes him able to compete. Why he tried relentless offense at times in this match against an error prone Young is just beyond me. Murray wouldn't crack the top50 playing tennis like that.
