http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/photoblog/dogs1.jpg (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/photoblog/2010/11/martin_usbornes_mute.html)

"I was once left in a car at young age. I don't know at what age or where or for how long, possibly at four years old, perhaps outside Tesco, probably for 15 minutes only. The details don't matter. The point is that I wondered if anyone would come back."

It was this experience that inspired photographer Martin Usborne's latest project which comprises photographs of dogs looking silently out of car windows in the dead of night.

one of the most striking pictures of the troubles in Northern Ireland. Features Joe McCann with his M1 carbine. He was one of the most beloved and respected members of the IRA and thousands of people attended his funeral after he was shot in the back by the RUC just a few months later after this pic was taken.

Worth 1059 words it seems, after your editorial comments.

What you didn't mention:

He was a Marxist, so about 99.99% of the Irish poulation would not have shown much love and respect for someone with a political agenda that they vehemently reject.

He was shot in the back as he tried to run away.

He was sent up to Belfast by his superiors in Dublin, even though he was the most wanted man in Northern Ireland. The police were somehow alerted to his presence. He was not even carrying his personal pistol at the time and some members of the OIRA have claimed the OIRA decided he would make a good martyr. That has eerie parallels to the fate of his hero, Che. Many Cubans believe that Fidel sent Che on his crazy, impossible missions to Africa and Bolivia, knowing he would probably be killed. Che was becoming more popular than Fidel in Havana, and that could not be allowed to continue. (Cienfuegos, the other of the Big Three after the revolution, disappeared without a trace on a small plane flight within Cuba.)

In another incident McCann led a unit which captured 3 UVF members in Sandy Row. The UVF had raided an OIRA arms dump earlier that day and the OIRA announced they would execute the three prisoners if the weapons were not returned. McCann eventually released the three UVF members because they were "working class men like yourself".[2]

the world needs more joe mccanns around, people willing to fight for their principles and ideals but still with enough humanity to recognize that we're all people in the end. The UVF were scum of the highest order but still joe mccann was merciful enough to forgive their lives.

Free Derry Corner is a square in the Bogside neighbourhood of Derry, Northern Ireland, which lies in the intersection of the Lecky Road, Rossville Street and Fahan Street. On the Free Derry Corner is a memorial to the 1981 hunger strikers and several murals. There is also a memorial to those who died engaging in paramilitary activity as part of the Provisional IRA's Derry brigade.

In January 1969 a local activist, John "Caker" Casey, painted a sign on a gable wall stating: "You are now entering Free Derry". When the British Home Secretary, Jim Callaghan, visited Derry in August 1969, the "Free Derry" wall was painted white and the "You are now entering Free Derry" sign was professionally re-painted in black lettering.[1] The houses on Lecky road and Fahan Street were subsequently demolished, but the wall was retained. It has been repainted at frequent intervals.

The square became known as Free Derry Corner of the inhabitants, while the media called it "the area". The square is located on the edge of the Bogside and, together with the surrounding streets were the scene of Bloody Sunday and the Battle of the Bogside. Because of the square's position the front lines when street fighting broke out was here. After the victory in the Battle of Bogside, the residents celebrated at Free Derry Corner, 30 and 31 August 1969, along with many famous Irishmen.

I think McCann said that the UVF were just like himself. I agree - both were scum.

A Marxist with humanity? There never has been and never will be an exception to that oxymoron.

A soldier of the people? What people? The children that were blown to bits in cafes? The boys that were kneecapped for not doing what they were told? The scum that carried out such ''humane'' acts weren't soldiers of the people - just common terrorists of the same ilk as Breivik.

But in the end both groups got what they really wanted - a dividing up of Belfast so that they could racketeer in drugs and prostitution and steal the people's money from banks.

But there is no end of suckers willing to fall for a Robin Hood fiction.

there were people who meant well and others who didn't. all in all there were awful actions comitted by republicans and unionists but at least in general terms the republicans mostly mantainted the policy of targeting the armed groups of northern ireland whereas the unionists almost exclusively targeted civilians. also, unionist groups engaged a lot more in the drug trade and prostitution than the republicans. not that this condones the actions of the IRA at all. at the end they also caused too much hurt and pain for me to condone their actions but to say that all IRA members were terrorists of the same ilk as brevik simply ain't true. joe mccann alone was a great man, the people's hero as they say, regardless of how much that must irk you.

But there is no end of suckers willing to fall for a Robin Hood fiction.

not so many as you might think. i think most people realize that the troubles were awful for everyone but then again, that doesnt stop them from sympathizing with the republican cause simply because that's the right cause to support. it's a shame that some of the ones who actually fought for that didn't always used the right means or simply lacked a sense of morality.

My hands-on experience of communism is that it engenders heartlessness in its practitioners. The way the Party hacks treated fellow Cuban citizens was inhumane. And the more abusive they were, the more they got promotions. Which is why Cuba is a basket case today. Any bright idea is immediately smothered because it might weaken the Party's grip.

People's hero?? I asked what people? Again, you have no idea. He was maybe a hero to the few misfits who favoured communism and terrorism. To everyone else he was just a cowardly terrorist who shot people at random.
But then you probably tell yourself the IRA were heroes in the Irish Republic. Whatever the IRA has become now with its drug trade, it was and is rejected by the people on both sides of the border. Illegal in fact.
Its aim was to establish a Socialist state in Ireland and no matter how much it must irk you, nobody but a few terrorists in all of Ireland wanted that. So what is your justification for saying that IRA members are people's heroes, when they were trying to destroy democracy?

Maybe its time you made a trip there, when you can ask the ''people'' what they would think of living in a Marxist state.

 you keep twisting stuff and distorting my words to fit your agenda of 'OMG, republicans = communism = evil!!!'
if you have read my comments more carefully you'd have seen i didnt favour a lot of the actions of groups like the ira and i certainly don't think the IRA were heroes in the irish republic. all in all, organizations like the ira were a response to the times, a response to a wish of a united ireland and even more profoundly to many, a response to the oppression and discrimination to which catholics were subject in the 6 counties. if the british had given the whole of ireland to the irish, a lot of 'troubles' would have been avoided.
i won't even get into the discussion of socialism, commnunism and whatnot....

Maybe this is why you keep getting it so wrong. When you say the Republican (IRA) cause is the right one to support, you are taking it onto yourself to declare the right cause for the people of Ireland.

not really http://www.thepost.ie/archives/2006/0402/majority-want-a-nation-once-again-13121.html

Almost 80 per cent of Irish people would like to see a united Ireland. Almost a quarter of voters - 22 per cent - believe that ‘‘delivering a united Ireland should be the government’s first priority’’.

I agree with slumpdasco, but when you feel compelled to write your own interpretation of ''a picture worth 1000 words'' then you invite discussion. You can't expect to use the thread for writing personal opinions and at the same time expect no comments.

But I will have the last word.

Just because a majority of people in the Irish Republic may want a united Ireland is no reason why Northern Ireland should be annexed. That would be like saying a majority of North Americans believe Canada should be annexed to the US, irrespective of what actual Canadians may want.

Lastly, I have no problem with a united Ireland, but I would have a big problem with an Irish Marxist state, which a handful of Irish terrorists like Joe McCann wanted to install against the wishes of all Irishmen.

More space pictures please.

Afghan girl is a classic. It's amazing that they found her and she had no idea that her youthful picture was so famous

It's both wonderful and sad. When the first photo was taken she was 12, in the second she is only about 30, but the stress of war has had a dreadful impact.

In the Frankfurt (Germany) English Theater there will be soon an exhibition with more pictures of the fotographer of the Afghan girl.

I follow this (http://streetsofberlin.tumblr.com/) street photographer who recently made a post in her other blog summarising (http://klarayoon.wordpress.com/2011/12/26/my-year-in-street-photography/) her 2011.

Thought it was quite an enjoyable journey.

This is from the Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984) in Madhya Pradesh, India. It was one of the worst industrial diasters. Nearly 20,000 died due to the higly toxic methly isocyanate gas which was released.
