This tour belongs to higher level than the others which the same ATP500 category. This is a good entry list methinks, 6/10 players in Top 10 is present here. Good luck to Soderling, Berankis, Bellucci.
If Berankis is not in MD, will he play in QD?

Berankis will get in automatically. The list will likely eventually end in the Brands-Gil range.

Great list, a lot of clay courters and then non clay courters. I expect a lot here from Dolgo, and I also think Gasquet, Fabio and Kamke will have good events, as well as of course Rafa, Nicolas and David.

Looking at the list, we can expect one wild-card will be wasted in the defending champion, and I say "wasted" because he should've signed in
But it seems that he prefers to steal wild-cards from the lower ranked players that really need them :o

If he plays here :o

He overplayed last year, MC final, winning here, semis in Rome, random side trips to NYC before Madrid, gets injured, instead of taking the next week off, plays Nice and completely fucks himself over the rest of the year, looking like a dead man. If he gets a WC here, he will do it again since he's playing Estoril now. He will probably make the organisers wait until the last minute before accepting the WC like he did last year :o

Guys, don't worry about Verdasco...

This happen don't first time. He don't entry for 500 tournament usually and he ask wild card. E.g. Washington, last year here and Acapulco.

He will play here sure.

Monaco if said his official website that he plays here, I don't know. Maybe he will play in Belgrade/Munich/Estoril and he don't want to play 5 weeks in row.

I'm French and I've never read anything concrete about that.

They did wonder about having surgery in short or long run, but no concrete decision had been taken.

And Tsonga used to say that he loved clay and wanted to succeed most in RG

Verdasco:

"The reason that I am not going to Barcelona, it is because tournament officials decided who they want to play. Nadal returns and a person that I will not say who had no interest to play and hates going places, and least in Spain, where they are not interested."

Is he saying he was denied a WC? Interesting... and good, maybe then Verdasco will learn to enter a tournament before the deadline.

But he is the defending champion in Barca  It is a bit strange to deny a WC to the defending champion if that is the case. Though I agree it was Verdasco's mistake not to enter the tournament in the normal way.

Björki
04-05-2011, 07:16 PM
but if he wants to play why didn't he sign in?

lalaland
04-05-2011, 07:18 PM
I honestly don't understand this, he's the defending champion and if he really wants to defend his title, why wouldn't he enter in the first place? Don't tell me he forgot, because he has a management company that handles this thing I'm sure, it's not like he has to submit the entry form himself. Plus the tournament itself would have asked him before hand if he will come or not, before the deadline, that's what early commitment is for. So I think he didn't want to commit for whatever reason then. Verdasco likes to not commit and asks for WCs, so tournaments encourage that by giving him WCs whenever he asks for one. I don't know why Barcelona decided to not give him one this time, but I can't really feel bad for Nando though.

Aenea
04-05-2011, 07:50 PM
@ Björki, lalaland
I do agree with both of you. I, too, don't like it when big names don't enter tournaments and then ask for WCs as the purpose of WCs is not this. A big name asking for a WC once or twice in few years is OK with me but turning this into habit is not.
In this case however I find it strange not to give a WC to the defending champion. If you ignore the fact it is Verdasco (a regular WCs) we are speaking about it is really strange to me a tournament to deny WC to the def champion. Why he hasn't entered on time and why he hasn't intended to defend his title I can't say.

lalaland
04-05-2011, 08:20 PM
I agree it is very strange that the defending champ got denied a WC. My guess it's probably 2 things, 1: he has a fall out with organizers. Maybe that he didn't commit to them before the deadline had caused hard-feeling? But at the end of the day, hard feelings will be forgotten if a stronger financial incentive appears. Based on what's been said in the article, it sounds like there's a even bigger name foreign player that they are giving the WC to? So a bigger draw than Verdasco the native defending champ? I can only imagine who that would be if that's the case. Besides, there's several WCs, I'm sure they can accommodate more than 1 big name. So it goes back to hard feeling, or maybe Verdasco's commitment fee is too high? I don't know, all speculations on my part of course.

Certainly not Murray, since he lived in Spain for a while, so I can't see why he'd hate to go there. Djokovic? Federer!? :spit:

Tsonga? Since Nando mentioned him in the article. But Tsonga cannot be a bigger name than Nando in Spain, can he .

There's another version of the news on GM: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=10914679&postcount=1
It said that the tournament directors were surprised by what Nando said and maintained that they welcome him to go to Barcelona , what does that mean? do they deny him WC or not? Or it's just a matter of not being able to reach an agreement for appearance fee with Nando so Nando felt underappreciated?

No wild cards have been announced, so it's unknown yet whether or not they were given to non-Spaniards as Verdasco alleges:

http://www.tennis.com/articles/templates/news.aspx?articleid=11329&zoneid=25Verdasco upset with Barcelona Open officials
April 5, 2011 - Ticker

Defending champion Fernando Verdasco is upset with Barcelona Open officials for failing to hold a wild card for him. Officials countered that the world No. 8 had plenty of time to directly enter the main draw. The Spaniard will instead play in Estoril, Portugal.
"The reason I’m not going Barcelona—ask the tournament officials who decide who they want to play," Verdasco told the Spanish press. "Nadal is coming back and there’s a person whom I’m not going to say who it is, but who has had no interest in me playing. I hate going places, especially in Spain, where they are not interested who plays. In Estoril, they are."
Verdasco is also upset that wild cards were handed out to non-Spaniards and added that the tournament doesn’t appreciate him even though he made a big effort to play it last year after Nadal pulled out.
"I am not vindictive or anything, but sad and disappointed with certain people who are responsible and Albert [Costa] because he has given priority to foreign players like Tsonga, Soderling instead of Spanish [players] and I think that is a mistake," he said.Costa, who is also Spain’s Davis Cup captain, said that Verdasco is still welcome at the event.—Matthew Cronin

According to this article, his statement about officials denying him a wild card is false. He was offered a wild card, but hasn't accepted:

Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell organization explains that Verdasco was treated correctly
05/04/2011

The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell organization explains that the name Fernando Verdasco does not appear on the players list of the tournament. The list was published a couple of weeks ago due to ATP regulations and defending champion Verdasco did not sign in. He still has the chance to participate in Barcelona if he accepts a wild card.
The tournament organization will reserve one invitation for the Spaniard and hope that he will defend his title in the Catalan capital. “We would be grateful if Fernando Verdasco came to play in Barcelona”, explained Real Club Tenis Barcelona president Albert Agustí, who has been surprised about the recent statement of the World No. 8.
Tournament director Albert Costa shares the same opinion and considers that all players who will participate at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell have been treated equally: “It’s a pity that Fernando is considering not to compete in Barcelona, but the only thing we can add is that we have treated the defending champion correctly at all times”.
The tournament features the best line-up in history with seven Top Ten players: Rafael Nadal (1), Andy Murray (4), Robin Soderling (5), David Ferrer (6), Tomas Berdych (7), Jurgen Melzer (9) and Gael Monfils (10).
