Has there ever been a highly ranked mens tennis player that was coached by a woman??

You don't see it that often, though when i look at profiles of players on the ATP and ITF some of them have womans names.

I think Istomin is coached by his mother. I don't know exactly what you mean by a highly ranked player, but he is top 50.

Aside from the mother/son angle (murray, istomin), there isn't a player in the top 100 with that arrangement. History-wise, also drawing a blank.

She played tennis herself and coached kids before she met Kukushkin. But yes, that's odd

I think it was just a temporary thing, but they both liked it, so who knows...

 Judy Murray has never been Andy's coach aside from his early junior days.

Has Marat Safin ever been coached by his mom either as a junior or in his early professional career ? I think I once heard something to that effect...but then again it may have been Safina

I wasn't aware of that. Hope they continue, it's been very successful cooperation so far.

Bjorn Borg had his racket taken away from him by his mother as punishment for showing temper. On wait, does that count?

Isn't Nikolay Davydenko now coached by wife Irina since his brother moved over to coach his own son?

Not that it seems to be working too well though I'm not sure I'd blame Irina for that.

It's very difficult to detect sarcasm when English isn't your first language

 yeah some of the stories around about her her seem to suggest she is from the school of crazy coaching parents.
