At least it was easier than last year's QF against Davy.
I doubt the SF will be as easy as last year's though. :o

Fed's serve still not enough to win him the tournament. No aces, no service winners.

When was the last time he wasn't even in the top 10 of most aces in the tournament after 5 matches? :help:

The way I see it Federer is clear favorite against Djokovic and just slightly favorite against Berdych, against Murray in the final he is 50-50 and against Nadal he is only favorite if Nadal-Murray goes the distance to the 5th set.

Djokovic wont beat anyone in the final if Federer-Djokovic goes to a 5th set even with 2 days rest, Djokovic cant beat Federer if Berdych-Djokovic goes to the 5th set.

Murray is clearly the favorite to beat Nadal in the semifinal, specialy if Ferrer-Nadal goes to 4th set and Nadal sweats alot.

As previously said Nadal is only favorite against Federer if he avoids a 5th set against Murray, Nadal is favorite against Djokovic in case Djokovic is taken to 5 sets against Federer (even if Nadal plays 5 sets against Murray). If both Nadal and Djokovic play 3-4 sets against Murray and Federer Djokovic is favorite against Nadal in the final.

Finaly I think Murray is favorite against Djokovic unless Murray plays 5 sets against Nadal and Djokovic avoids the 5 set match against Federer.

This will be fun....

5 sets against Murray is not the same as 5 sets against BOM-BOM Verdasco, 5 sets against Murray is going to make Nadal's knees explode. He will still be favorite against a tired Djokovic and slight favorite against headcase Berdych but Federer will probably destroy a tired Nadal (Hamburg 2007, Madrid 2009)

Good performance from Federer, although he didn't get a lot of free points on serve and there were still some unnecessary shanks. But he got the job done :) Some of those shots in the second set were just ridiculous. (around the net, tweener, half drop volley while stan was at the net haha)

27th GS SF and his 8th consecutive AO SF. Once again, it is unreal!!

The thing is Federer doesn`t get lots of free point on serve but still didn`t loose serve and had to face only 1 BP which is great for him.Certainly Wawrinka didn`t play great, never really got into the match probably tough to get used to the day conditions after 2 night sessions and having to play Federer.

Stan didn't play anywhere nearly what he did against Duck, but it also gives props to Roger, who never allowed him to get comfortable during the match ;)

At moments, this match had an exho feel to it, specially since Roger made some really ridiculous shots and defended awesomely (his ROS has improved a LOT)

Stan could have tried harder but once Roger won the first set 6-1, it was over for him :o

Expected.

Many of these players are not enough to damage the likes of Federer/Nadal/Djokovic.

Federer tomorrow will get a shot at a rematch against two top players that defeated him last year at the slams. He got his revenge against Soderling, now it is Djokovic/Berdych turn.

There are some good and bad news in this.

The good news is that he defeated a player that's not as challenging as Berdych, Djokovic, etc. So he saved himself time and energy to rest up.

Another good news is Berdych and Djokovic will be beating up on each other.

However..if Djokovic or Berdych were to crush each other in 3 sets......they would rest up well and be greatly prepared coming in the Federer match after having faced a good player.

I will pick out my prediction based on if the Berdych/Djokovic match goes to either 3/4 or 5 sets.

The upcoming Nadal-Ferrer QF match is expected to be another scripted play for fans to 'enjoy' or 'abhor', as the case may be. But unlike the Fed-Wawrinka match, compatriots Rafitito and David will be out there 'killing' each other. Another Tio Toni's masterpiece.

Federer is a different opponent entirely to the one dimensional Monfils and Roddick. He has a a ton of options at his disposal to employ depending on the opponent so he didn't make it easy for Stan. I thought Fed was a bit more aggressive on return of serve, seemed to be really showing his flare today.

Oh definitely,Fed is a completely different opponent than Roddick/Monfils which played a big part in the outcome but it wasn't just Stan's game, his presence on court against Roddick especially was very confident(even menacing at times)but against Fed he just seemed awestruck and timid.

I firmly agree. When Roddick isn't serving well, he hasn't got any other 'go to' options. He plays too passively these days so if he comes up against anyone with confidence & the ability to attack he looks pretty vulnerable. Stan took advantage of this entirely and deservedly won the match. Federer is a different story and they say many of his opponents are defeated before the match begins. Looked to be the case today. As far as Roddick is concerned, he will be lucky to stay in the top ten this year.

Agree,Roddick is really making anyone look like a world beater against him from the baseline these days. His balls just sit up and his movement and anticipation are not nearly good enough for him to frustrate tougher opponents, why is he so damn passive off the ground when we know he can hit a big FH is beyond me.Stan looked like he had all the time in the world to setup his shots against Rod and once he found his rhytm he coasted to victory.

I have tickets to the other QF's, the SF's and the final.

Think the other 2 QF's are going to be one sided but the semi's and the final could go anywhere. There's still a lot of decent tennis to be played.

I think it is more like 80%, 20% is respect and probably fear from Roger, which does not come from nothing, Fed earned it. Wawa thinks that he needs to do something very special vs Fed I think, that harms his game.

Watch nadal - ferrer. it will be the same.

I agree with that.

Wawrinka has already beaten Federer once (right? I can't be bothered to look it up but I seem to remember that) and Ferrer has beaten Nadal three times already (once on hardcourts) so it's not as if they can't do it or that they just bend over.
However on the big stage (so esp. in a major), there's the added pressure to come up with something special. So unless they're having a super day, it does indeed harm their game.

Aside from a few neat shots by Federer towards the end of the second set, what was so entertaining about watching Wawrinka lumber around spraying shots all over the place? Wawrinka's attitude was piss poor as well.

I don't think Nadal/Cilic was far worse, just as bad and boring.

No, he was playing normal. people overvalue Feds level of play, usually having his peak game in mind as baseline. Fed will not play his best tennis everyday. Whatever he did was enough to destroy wawa.

Fed will up his game in the SF because the situation is different.

I watched the 2nd set this morning and Fed simply outplayed wawrinka who tried hard (in my eyes) to get into the match. It is a matter of fact hat Federer is superior to wawrinka in almost any aspect gamewise. I think you make it to easy for yourself if you think that giving wawrinka the mentality of Nadal would make him avoid a clear defeat by Fed. His game has less margin then Nadal. If he forces it a bit and gets a bit tight it is gonna show.

It will seem as if Ferrer fears Nadal. Simply because Ferrer will not have the game to beat him.

I thought Federer's game plan was spot on. Fed seemed to avoid topspin backhand rallies, knowing that this would give Wawrinka the advantage. If Fed ever went crosscourt on his backhand side, it was a slice that'd be low on Wawrinka's backhand side. The few times that Fed did hit to Wawrinka's backhand and Wawrinka was able to hit with topspin, it was bad news for Fed. If you look back at the match, Fed hit many more down the line backhands than crosscourt backhands because he knew that the forehand exchanges would be in his favor.

Bottom line, Wawrinka played that poorly because Federer didn't allow Wawrinka to utilize any of his strengths against him. When you watch the match it looked like Wawrinka might have just had a bad day. Federer made the day bad for him.

Watch how Ferrer will 'act' today against Rafito in their QF match. Another Tio Toni's handiwork.

If there is one difference however between Fed and Nadal as far as 'backstoppers' are concerned, it is that Fed has only one in Stan while Nadal has a battalion - Verdasco, Ferrer, Lopez, Almagro, Montanes, et al. These backstoppers are similar to paid hacks. Tennis is business.

it seems that wawa's serves are not that huge, its just that Roddick is a poor returner:eek:

That was one of the things that puzzled me the most about this match. Wawrinka wasn't getting enough free points on his serve (even Fed only got those in the 1st set). Then again like you say Dick's return game is so LOLOLOL these days (also, there's few top players against whom it is easier to hit winners from the baseline) that it's hardly a gauge for the actual effectiveness of anyone's serving.

Re: this match overall, there was certainly an exho-ish "Weeeee! Trick shots!" feel to some of the rallies, and the intensity/competitiveness levels of both Stan and Fed ranged from "half-arsed practice session" to "comatose".
