Murray was excellent today overall, managed the match right from the start.

I am really critical of Melzer's mental application today though, he was defeatist, miserable, grumpy and totally seemed lacking in any real plan out there.

He talked a good game prior to the match but that's really as good as it got from him.

Melzdown is a joke of a player. Hopefully Murray can make the final, between him and Fed I wouldn't mind too much if he won the whole thing.

Was laughable when I heard Melzer saying he'd be bossing the points and moving Murray about the court. Bet he didn't see Andy coming with the forehands he was ripping around the court. Melzer looked average, but that was Andy's doing. Guy was a brick wall.

The Tradesman goes to work early on the Meltzer body with a sledgehammer... emerging just after smoko break with a snickers wrapper... no tools required at the end... finished the job with his bare hands...

Cold, heavy, slow. Melzer realised after about 15 minutes he had zero chance, he doesn't have the power to end rallies consistently against Murray's defence, and doubly so when he's playing this well.

Muzza just too good today.

Playing better than last year and I think he'll bring home the title this year.

4 matches without breaking sweat. Should win the QF comfortably and then we'll see who's left in the semi's

Murray just keeps dominating... I really think he is on a mission to win and make a statement. I really would love to see him get to the finals.

Murray in scary form
First two sets where closer than scoreline indicates. Melzer was up in many many games he ended up losing.

Muzza wins

6-3 6-1 4-2
6-1 6-3 6-3
6-1 6-1 6-2
6-3 6-1 6-1

Nice stats just there and I think his QF could be simular also.

I think Borg holds the record for least games lost. I don't think Muzza will get it even if he wins the title.

Peaked career wise or in this tournament?

Actually the answer is probably no to both.

Served was pretty poor today I thought until maybe set 3.

As for career I think he'll get better in the next couple of years.

Just too strong from Murray. Jurgen was trying to play high risk offensive tennis, but it backfired quite spectacularly.

And I agree that impressive though this performance was, I don't think we saw the best of Murray. He did face break points in some games after all. Against a more focused opponent, the sets could have been a lot closer.

Did I watch a different match? Through the first set and first few games in the second, Murray was average at best. Melzer gifted him the first set - Murray didn't really elevate his game until midway through the 2nd.

Basically, Melzer didn't back up his second serve today. Also, seemed like a few critical points in the match where melzer could've broken murray but failed to do so, made the match a blow-out. There was no doubt about it, Melzer was a mental midget today. If some points could've gone his way, the scoreline would have been closer. But no, he didn't make good decisions on any points when the match was relevant (cross court backhand into the net instead of down the line, missed volleys, missed half-volleys).

Nice work Murray!!! Good that he hasn't lost a set yet, and he should have plenty of gas left in his tank.

Dolgo in the QF awaits (think Murray will win that one), then hopefully the much-anticipated SF with Rafa. :)

Really? Because I think Roland Garros last year answered that, oh wait if you thought that was a fluke then what about Shanghai?

Don't be stupid, Melzer is as good as anyone outside of the top 5 right now, this was obviously just a crap match from him.

Jürgen more or less disappeared after he could not convert his bps in the first game of the second set. He was flat from that point onwards. I really wonder if playing singles and doubles is such a good idea.

Andy playing awesome tennis. Good mix of offense and defence, the guys like a brick wall, people just can't seem to get past him. He's in pretty scary form this tournament so far and should have plenty of gas left in the tank. Murray for the title!

Good to see Murray being a bit more aggressive of the forehand wing.

Pipsy
01-24-2011, 02:11 PM
After a sluggish start to the first set, Murray kept a fairly good level throughout the match. However, he still obviously had a couple of extra gears to go to if he needed them. This match was all about putting the ball back consistently within a couple of yards of the lines and letting Melzer lose all the points for him.

Neither Andy nor the crowd really got pumped up in that match and that's because the tennis wasn't flashy, it was exactly what was required to dispatch an opponent quickly and nothing more.

It is clueless to say Murray can't win this. He is not the fav but he clearly has a chance.
Fed brought his best game 2010. If not, Murray can cause him headaches for sure, see other Fed-murray matches for refernce. Fed will not always be able to bring his best. Murray was better then Nadal in 2010 AO also before Nadal got injured.

Murray is a killing machine right now  Those results are just ridiculous considering the depth in mens tennis.

Poor Melzer just can't play his game against Murray. It's never gonna happen for him against Muzza.
