WWW AO QF: Roger Federer (2) vs. Stan Wawrinka (19)

They’re both Swiss. They are BFF’s. They’ve won an Olympic Gold medal together. Each has won a tournament leading up to the Australian Open. One has looked in scintillating form leading up to the QF and the other has looked fatigued. They both covet the Swiss No.1 spot.

I know I'm getting in very early but I'm pumped for this match.

I've been tipping Wawrinka in all his matches thus far and will continue to do so here. His time is now. He's 25 (average peak age for professional men), had a Grand Slam breakthrough at the last slam and is brining it here!

All the info:

http://i55.tinypic.com/2jajo8w.gif

Wawrinka d. Gabashvili (1st round), Dimitrov (2nd), Monfils (3rd) and Roddick (4th) all in straight sets.

Federer d. Lacko (1st), Simon (2nd), Malisse (3rd) and Robredo (4th). Went to five against Simon and four against Robredo.

Wawrinka is in great form. Beat Roddick in straights sets meeans something. If Federer lost 1 set to Robredo that means Wawrinka has some real chance here. I would say 3:1 Federer if he play like last couple of mohts, but he isn´playing like last couple of months, he is playing like befor ethat - time of Wimbledon, Halle and so one.. So hard to say- the thing is about Federer. Yes Wawrinka is good really good, but if Roger manage to play his best tennis he will destroy him, but if he struggles like to in match against Robredo or Simon than Wawrinka is favouritte of that match for me.

Beating Roddick in straights actually means absolutely nothing. Completely different ball game against Federer. Anyway, this will be an interesting match.

If Federer and Wawa continue playing like this respectively, Stan will destroy Roger. Fed should lift up his game noticeably, otherwise the only hope for him is that Chokinka appears at big points.

Nevertheless, I expect that Federer plays better and edges Wawrinka in 4 very close sets.

Assuming Wawrinka plays like he did today, Fed will have to up his game and he will. Going to be a different type of match for Stan, Fed is going to be dictating and the pressure will be much more than it was against Roddick today and unfortunately he has a tendancy to get a bit tight. I just hope for a good match but don't see anything other than a Federer win.

I agree. Roddick is a pusher, who can't even juice it up occassionally. Federer plays faster, faster, faster. Form depends on opponent.

Federer's quarter-final draws have been awful since AO last year:

AO 2010: Red hot Davy
RG 2010: Soderling (finalist)
W 2010: Berdych (finalist)
US 2010: Soderling (5th seed)

This one might not seem too bad now, but drawing Berdych didn't look too bad at Wimbledon at the time.

Stan will bend over nicely for his countryman in 3 easy sets. He wouldn't want to jeopardize his master's chances of getting to slam SF or Olderer will not give him his dog bisquits.

Certainly this will be a different match for Wawrinka then against Roddick. If Wawrinka gets for example ahead in the match he certainly won`t have it all his way.
Roddick doesn`t have a plan B if things don`t go his way but Federer will certainly give him different looks and knows how to change tactics.

Depends what you mean by "potential" and how much of it you think Stan has.

If he loses it doesn't mean he didn't live up to his potential, it really depends how he plays and how Roger plays - if Roger plays at or near his best, Stan does not win, whatever he does.

Plus Stan has beaten Roger before so I'm not sure what the word "finally" is doing in there.

It is about time Stan made a slam SF, he has the weapons although at times he has lacked the temperament, but having to go through Roger to do it is a very big ask.

Federer is a different prospect. Roddick was playing too defensively and allowing Stan to attack a whole lot. Federer will be aggressive and Stan will not be able to control the points like he did versus Roddick today. I think Fed should win this one in 3 or 4 sets.

Just like what Verdasco did last US Open quarterfinals when he handed over to Nadal on a silver platter that semifinal slot. It would always be a waste of time to discuss results of matches between compatriots, especially when too much was at stake. Blood is thicker than water, you know.

Firtly, Fed, Wawa matches have not been complete destruction, instead it'susually only been 1 or 2 breaks, if not a tiebreak.

Secondly, Almugro is a worse player. Stans problem is consistency from tournament to tournament, but has plenty of weapons to worry players.

Rafa did lose to his boytoy Ferrer at the USO, so these things do happen. Wawa is in hot form and although I didnt see his last match, Fed seems pretty suspect. This is as good a chance as Wawrinka is going to get in this matchup, but Fed is obviously still the big favourite for the match.

Given that Stan has been working with Lundgren for roughly 2-3 months, I'm going to go with Federer in 5 sets.

I think Lundgren will give some kind of template on how to go about Federer's weaknesses.

However, given that Stan has a 1 handed backhand, I expect Federer to attack it like no tomorrow.

Both men will attack the backhands. But Federer has a bigger forehand, footspeed.

Stan will put up a fight, but should not look down at himself.

Very, very interesting.

I have been very impressed by Stan's play this week, and the way he handled Roddick was exactly how I was hoping. However, as people say, this was Roddick...he wasn't in ultra-pusher mode imo, but certainly his grounds didn't threaten Stan at all, and his net play was predictably average. Furthermore, Roddick wasn't serving well in the first half of the match (didn't see the rest), and even so he isn't known for having particularly great placement or variety of serve. Some players can just read/handle it, and Stan did just that today.

Federer will have to play (much) better if he is to win, and if it is purely a matter of motivation for him to raise his level, he will be ready to bolt on Tuesday. This is a Slam event and, as always, he wants to win another one of them. Stan has hit a great level of form...Fed will respect that, and that should only make him more focused. As others say, he will be the one dictating, and Stan hasn't responded well to that sort of approach in the past. Furthermore, when he is serving well, Fed is able to really mix up his delivery, and this should keep Stan guessing. I also think that Fed might enjoy the pace that Stan hits on his grounds, and he'll be ready to pounce on Stan's 2nd serve...generally Stan serves at little over 50% 1st serves.

I can definitely see an upset, especially if Federror swaggers into the stadium. However, I suspect that Fed will pull through, and certainly he can draw on his huge experience at the business end of Slams. Stan still has a choker streak in him...

It'll come down to who dictates. If it's Wawrinka that's doing the running, Federer's got this. But if Stan can push Federer on the defensive, he has a shot. It'll be interesting to see how much Stan believes in himself if he gets into a winning position against Roger.

I'm saying Federer in five, and I think it could be an epic.

Stan has the killer instinct now with Lungdren. However, when Federer plays well, he will always beat Stan. Same goes for Soderling, Davydenko, Del Potro, Berdych, etc. At his best, Federer does everything better than these guys.

If he's a step slow though, he'll be in trouble.

If they keep playing the way they have, then Stan will win, because Roger is lacking focus and tends to lose himself in matches.

Wawa is dangerous, Roger needs him to move around a little bit and have a firm game plan. Peter Lundgren knows all about Roger's game. Wawa is very strong (big serve, big forehand, smart forehand).

Yeah, this. I mean, it's not as though his "potential" is such that he should just be running around beating Federer and Nadal all the time. If he plays well, he'll give Roger some trouble, but if Roger plays well, he won't lose.

It sucks this schedule. Not that Federer-Wawrinka is in the day session but that it is played second match and for me in the middle of the night.I will probably miss it.
Certainly the day conditions will be tough for Wawrinka having played the last couple of matches during the night

Day match? then Stan in 4

I dunno about that. It`s certainly tough for any player after 2 straight night session matches playing early in the day.Federer hasn`t looked great in the day but certainly he would be more adjusted to the conditions then Wawrinka.
I have a feeling Wawrinka might start slow in the match and it will take a while until he gets into the match rhythm

Wawrinka played back to back night matches so this might be worse for him.

of course stan has looked more impressive than federer so far in this tournament. but once these two step on the court, i don't think it'll matter anymore. i think roger will win, but i'll be superhappy if stan manages to prove me wrong.

wawrinka losses this only by choke - and I dont believe itll happen this time.

I'm so pumped for this match and I don't know why as I'm not a fan of either  But I just feel like this is going to be the match of the tournament. Two Swiss players, two friends, one with 16 GS and the other with only a quarter final to his name, one playing amazingly, the other playing meh. It has all the ingredients for a five set thriller.

Stan is on fire and the way Fed is playing, he could win this but my head is still telling me Fed will come through. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I'm thinking that it might go five. But I have no idea who would win.

Just for the hell of it, I'll give the edge to Fed.

Federer was struggling in that RG and won in 3. I expect the same here.

If Wawrinka keeps playing like he has, he will beat Federer.

Yes, indeed! The question is if he can keep it up.....normally it´s up to Federer how the match will end, but not in this match....it will be exciting to watch!

I really don't see an upset happening people. We have seen time and time again that when Federer plays poorly, he still manages to beat players who play very good matches. Just because Federer had a poor match (by his standards) in the 4th round doesn't mean his form will continue to decline.

Seriously, he beat Roddick in straights and that is no indication that he will beat Federer. I think that at worst, Stan will take a set off Roger. That's it. Otherwise Federer in straight sets.

All depend on Federer, If Federors shows up then Stan has a chance, if not then Fed wins but i think Roger will concentrate in this match, not like the match with Boredo when he seems bored and lose the second set

All depend on Federer...

I would say the opposite. I Stockholm open a few months ago when they met, Wawwe started in big style, won the first set easy and with a break in the second. Fedde had no answer to it. Suddenly Wawwe started to miss and the choke was a fact.....

Federer will win easily because Wawrinka sucks. I mean, the Fedtards said so during the USO (imagine who was playing Wawrinka?), so it must be true

Day match is a huge advantage to Federer. The quicker the conditions, the harder it is for Stan to set up his strokes. Also Stan not the greatest returner. Expect Roger to hold serve confortably.

i doubt this mate. roger has struggled so far because of day matches. he would prefer to play this at night i would think. anyway he must stay on the attack and assert his dominance over stan.

I'm not sure what he'd prefer to be honest, he's noted how slow the court is in his PCs a few times, especially when it was getting slower because of cooling temperatures when he played Simon at night. I'd still be nervous wherever it was scheduled though :S

Day match, faster conditions. Have you looked at the weather forecast? It doesn't seem to be that hot in Melbourne these days, 27C max. partly cloudy with some showers for Tuesday etc. I don't know who these conditions will suit better.
