Will Dolgopolov reach top 20 this year?

Recently Dolgo has said that his aim for this year is to reach top 20. What do you think? Is it real?

Close. He will be in 17-25 range imo.

I agree with Luinir. 17-25 sounds about realistic.

No one can say that with confidence but I'm sure that most of tennis fans would love to see that

because we can agree that there are no young guys in top 50, we need "fresh blood" and Dolgo is definitely a guy to keep an eye on

He's got the talent, but lots of rough edges to iron out in his game.

Hard to get into top20 with a crap seeding.

If you look at the players currently at the bottom end of the top 20, they have all stood out somewhere.

Isner and Querrey scored strong points in optionals last year.
Baghdatis and Fish added big performances in Cincinnati to strong results in optionals.
Ljubicic won Indian Wells.

Dolgopolov needs to practically double his current points to mix with these guys, and to do that he'll need to be able to perform more consistently at tour level, and go very deep in draws several weeks of the season.

Does he have the talent to do that? Yes. Does he have the consistency? Questionable.

His choice of scheduling after the Australian Open has been sensible...he should win a good number of matches on South American clay.

Australian Open R4 is a very good start for his ranking this year, but I question whether he can get enough decent results this season to finish top 20. If he can finish comfortably inside the top 32, he might have a better chance next year when he'd enjoy a better seeding (as arf suggests).

After lost in QF Dolgo will be No. 32 in the new ranking of January 31. His Latin America tour (Costa Do Sauipe, Brazil since Feb 7, Buenos Aires, Argentina since Feb 14 and Acapulco, Mexico since Feb 21) will show the further trend...

Once before you give your 2 cents, try to check some facts, he destroyed the CH circuit playing on nothing else than clay, the red dirt is his natural surface, thats why it was only logical for him to play the south american clay swing.....

Until very recently he'd have said clay is his best surface. Gave Nadal a really good match in Madrid, that's the first time he signalled real top level ability.

Additionally. From Dolgo's interview after match with Soederling:

ALEXANDR DOLGOPOLOV: Well, I'm more comfortable on clay because still sometimes my legs hurt, and I don't want to be staying on hard too much. I'm used to clay more. I think I can do good results there.

If Dolgo can continue to fine tune his game then top 20 is achievable. Given that he favours clay, we could perhaps see the next realistic challenger on the clay circuit. Roland Garros will be interesting with Rafa/Soderling/Federer/Berdych in the mix.

i don't know i just wrote what i saw from his game in this tournament........his backhand is not a solid shot yet........he is either directing the ball off that wing or flattening out the stroke.......on clay he needs to drive a lot of balls with spin.......he is also making a lot of errors when switching from that topspin forehand cc to a flat one........we will see what he brings to the clay court season this season........

If you look on his official 953 ranking points (of January 10), you could see that Dolgo work out:
443 points on clay courts
335 points on hard courts (245 outdoors and 90 indoors)
135 points on grass courts
40 points on carpet

The surprise factor of his game will fade away a little bit as he becomes more known but he can make the top 25 if he has a solid clay season. Then if he gets seedings for the last 3 majors he can make deep runs in those as well.

garson
01-27-2011, 01:05 AM
He had an impressive run to the first Grand Slam quarterfinal (the only unseeded men's singles left in the quarterfinal round. He needs to have consistency in his game, improve his shots, win some matches in order to reach top 20 for sure.:)

Clearly he has game to do it.

I do think he needs to work more on the consistency of that game's application and on stickability during matches - he has periods where he goes away for a long time, very hot and cold.

At this point, it would almost be a disappointment if he fails to finish top 20. He is almost 30% there, and the season is only 6 weeks old.

Looks pretty much a cert at this stage, barring injuries. He'll be seeded for IW and Miami now which should help? Though I guess the slow hardcourts will be his least favourite surface if he finds it tough on his joints

Top 15. He can play on grass as he showed last year. We just saw what he can do on hard court. And clay is his favorite surface. Big Dog might even have a chance to make top 10 this year if he keeps improving and getting stronger. Those wins over inform Soderling and Tsonga were devastatingly impressive.

just like the 'tennis fans' apparently have the tendency to write off true top players too soon, whenever they suffer one of their occasional glitches (for some, this even includes 'not being able to defend a title, while still managing to reach the finals of said tournament'), there's this same tendency to over-hype the Young-and-Coming.

Dolgo has been doing fine so far and I'm happy to see that. I hope he'll be able to continue his great run so far, as the sport truly needs new blood right now. I'm not going to call for any predictions right now, as it is that Many have been summoned to the Altar, but only few manage to get there.

Best of luck to Dolgo, I'd really like for him to become a power to reckon with in the near future. :)

It's not the matter of hype; the old out of shape players who occupy higher positions will fall down, it's a matter of time, probably a short one. Someone must replace them and Dolgo doesn't defend that many points (mostly challengers and low rounds on ATP level) so yes, his ranking will go up very soon.

He is ahead of players like Troicki and Wawrinka in the race so that probably means he is in top20 to stay this time, at least until AO

Dolgo is in Australia since December 4 or 5. So, he has no his typical problem with acclimatization, time difference, jet lag etc. I guess only injury could prevent him from winning
