Congratulations Jurgen! I must say that this time last year I would not have forecast it, but I am pleased he will most likely get his career high ranking and enter the top 10 at the age of 29. He defends a fair few points at Roland Garros though, so it should be interesting to see how long he is able to maintain it.

He has tons of points to gain at the upcoming M1000s so he has a good shot at keeping his ranking. I hope he can maintain his consistency.

At least he ends his career on a flying note.

BTW, don't want to open a thread about this, but before the Nadal-Tomic match, they showed a bunch of ATP player comments on the 'Rafa slam'. Everyone called it an incredible achievement as it is; only Melzer shunned it straight away. He said, 'No, only if you do it in a single year, it is a slam. So sorry Rafa!'

It is nice for guy like Melzer to be in top 10- because he is 29 years old. Yes he can be surpassed by other guys but really i don´t think that Cilic or Almagro will win AO.. but I am not so sure about him to stay there. How someone said, there are better guys out of top 10 tham Melzer. I think Melzer should be aboug 15-20 place but ok he has points to the ranking, others don´t. But don´t forget that he is defending SF in RG- so 720 points and if he loose in 4R there he will loose many points exactly 720-180 that means 540 points. I am looking forward to his match with Andy. Melzer seems to be in good form, but Murray too so we will se what can he do to Murray.

To be fair Melzer is delivering, unlike Gasquet for example.

Melzer is top 10 via an injury and a retirement of Bagdhatis, not a brilliant way to make his way to the top.
Melzer is 29 when he enters top 10, and so far, he has won the insane amount of 2 titles in his career. Gasquet did all these things years ago. Wait for post-FO then he will be Meltzer again.

John McEnroe of course, he was nr 1 in singles and doubles at the same time :worship:.

Peter Fleming also made nr.8 in singles, there's a good chance he was top 10 in doubles at the time as well.

Edberg is a possibility, he is a former doubles nr. 1 as well.

While I think the "weak era" argument is mostly BS and reminiscent of the logic grandparents tend to use ("it used to be so much better" etc.), I very much question your assessment of Melzer being better than Pioline. Pioline did make two GS finals.

Jürgen obviously is no tennis prodigy but hard work and good consistency over the last 52 weeks have gotten him to top 10 - not 1 or 2 retirements like you are bullshitting about. This result will be a great memory for him when he hangs up his racquet, so why not congratulate him.

No big whoop making the top 10 for Jurgen

1st round - Beat a qualifier
2nd round - Beat the winner of a match between the very definition of mug and a local-favorite wildcard.
3rd round - Marcos retire, he was only well enough to beat Nalb, who didn't have enough gas to beat Marcos because he didn't take the week off before the slam. Stupid - they're both out in week 1.

Meanwhile, over on court 12, Jurgen's chief rival happens to draw Wonderboy with the 145 mph serve.

Melzer has yet to actually play a challenging match in this slam. He will soon enough and he will lose.

Your point being? He played RG semi, beating No3 in the world, who's actually good on clay. He's top 10 status is well deserved.

My point is that this is basically pure dumb luck. There are 5 - 10 players ranked beneath him who are obviously better. He's stayed healthy. He's been consisten. He's had one of those lucky moments where he got a chance to move a place or 2 above where he might have otherwise belonged. Good for him.

I don't know why Melzer gets all the love and poor old Marin gets ignored despite the fact that he seems to be on his way back.

Yeah - he's a good player and everything, but Melzer's probable entry into the top 10 only really shows that almost any competent player can crack the top 10 if he just doesn't get injured and he has a basically consistent year. I'm happy for him, but he hasn't done anything in this tournament yet. I wouldn't celebrate his greatness just yet. The fact that he's in the 4th round is just dumb luck.

Celebrate his greatness? People are congratulating him on cracking top 10, not proclaiming him GOAT. Also he's, what, 11th seed. What kind of draw did you expect him to have so far? They can't all draw Hewitt in the 1st round ad they all earned their seeding, so GTFO with dumb luck.

Great talent, who was also a huge headcase for the most part of his career, gets it together and has some excellent runs with some very impressive victories and gets to top 10 eventually. Good story if you ask me.

He hasn't cracked the top 10 yet. That is a likely but not certain outcome of this tournament.

I'm only pointing out that Mikhail is still a much better player as is Marcos, Joe Willy, Monfils, Nalbandian, Stan and probably about half the other players ranked 11-25. Good for Jurgen. He got lucky. Yesterday he showed what kind of talent he really is.

I don't think Melzer will fall off as much as people think. He may even stay top 8-12. The truth is there isn't much of a difference in level after the top 5. Ferrer is probably the clear cut #6 player right now, and after that, it's a crapshoot. Melzer can play on all surfaces and now he rarely loses matches he shouldn't. He's also generally healthy, and he's improved mentally. So I think he'll finish top 15 again this year.

players 10-25 who can play inspired tennis (in my *HUMBLE* opinion)....

Stan, Sam, Marcos, Gael, Mike Llodra.

The rest of them - as you say - don't do much more than "not lose the matches they shouldn't lose" and half the time they can't manage that.

Filo V.
02-06-2011, 01:36 AM
I agree, Sam isn't on that level. He's been poor since the summer of last season. And if he doesn't defend his points from last year the next two weeks, he'll be in the 25-30 ranking range.

Llodra really isn't on that level, either, until he does what he did at the end of the year consistently in outdoor tournaments.

Llodra really isn't on that level, either, until he does what he did at the end of the year consistently in outdoor tournaments.

I watched him play Tommy Robredo in the side car at USO last year and I was really impressed with his S&V. Outstanding tennis. It was a great match, all-but-tied going into the 4th set.

Then the bum retired. Still - it was better than the Verdasco/Nalbandian match I saw in the side car earlier that day.

If you're more interest in tennis than you are in the grandeur of the stadium you're watching it in - then head for the side car.
