Quick end to Del Potro's comeback. Pity because it would have been nice to see him play in the latter stages.

Great match from Baggy for the most part, and too many Pony errors, particularly at the start. He fought to the end though, true warrior. Sad to see him go out, wanted more of him here.

higher level than i expected from both. del potro still not quite match-fit, but clearly has the shots.

Baghdatis has been known to play well in Melbourne & with Del Potro probably not near his best, this result was expected.

I'm positive Del Potro will be back for real in six months or so. He needs alot more matches.
Baggy looked great today.

Del potro is playing alot better than i am expecting from him at this stage. Good signs, the french open could even be very competitive from juan.

Baggy was too strong for Delpo today. Del Potro made some good shots, but also made a lot of errors. I think that it was a good start of the year for Delpo, with 2 wins and 2 losses. The plan for Australian Open(2nd round) was carried out.

But Del Potro needs more and more work and improvement.

Next up is San Jose! VAMOS!!! :)

Del Po started to get it back at the end there, looked like he might win in 5 if he broke Baggy at 2-4. Good sign for him, hopefully he can make some noise at Indian Wells/Miami.

Yeah, thats just what Rafa wants. A fresh opponent who owns him head to head first round.

Some good signs for Del Potro. Other than the first set, the match was competitive. He got one set and played a long match against a good opponent that played well. Still extremely rusty but isolated flashes of old self.

Baggy played well, as was expected with him playing on RLA. Hope he can beat Melzer to set up a 4th round meeting with Murray, that has potential to be a a cracker..

Del Potro played well in patches but obviously needs more matches to get back to where he was 18 months ago. All the shots were still there but you can't expect to get back to that level straight away.

Gilbert said during the match that he thinks del Potro won't be back in the "will win this title" discussion until 2012.

I kinda agree.

He would likely beat this version, but if you think Rafa wants to play Pony first round of any slam your an even bigger mug than I thought you were.

Well, it appears DPo is signed up for a lot of winter tournaments so his ranking will rise -- at least that's the plan.

I don't think anyone would like to see a fully recovered DPo first round.

Back OT - was good to see Delpo get through to this round in a slam. A lot of players don't do so well on the way back initially after just a few weeks layoff, far less an entire year. Look forward to seeing him get match tough, and hopefully no more injuries for a long, long while

Delpo. He's got a long road back, but I think he'll get there. His serve and BH are looking OK, it was his FH that was the undoing in this match. So many errors from that side. :(

Del Porto's forehand was a bit of a let down. He looked a bit off but with more matches i'm sure he'll do well this year. . . so long as he doesn't get injured.

Dini
01-20-2011, 12:46 PM
Del Potro looked slow, sluggish and his shots definitely didn't have the sharpness he's known for. You used to bank on him making the vast majority of forehands he hit before the layoff; it was such a certainty. Of course all of it is understandable with only four matches in nearly a year.

I wasn't too impressed with Baghdatis from what I saw (the last two sets) but he was able to serve really well at the end to sniff away any chances of JMDP fighting back. Should be another interesting encounter vs. Melzer.

Baggy looked great today.

Yep, I think the same, honestly Del Potro will be 100 % ready for US season which is where he can hurt the most to top players, well and on clay vs Murray but that is not a challenge :p.

01-20-2011, 01:24 PM
JMDP seemed slow to me, not moving as well as he usually did. Also his forehand failed big time this match. I think we can expect big things from him come USO2011.

Johnny Groove
01-20-2011, 01:30 PM
Delpo still on the comeback trail. As some have said, his movement is not quite where it needs to be and thus those nuclear forehands I recall from the USO 2009 are now being sprayed wide.

So long as JMDP stays healthy, he'll continue to improve drastically this year.

Good win!

Baghdatis must have the record with the most foot faults, there's almost always one in every match.

Stats for Baghdatis were pretty good if they were correct. 46 winners, 29 UEs, 88% won on first, 54% on second serve.
Only his first serve percentage was too low imo.

01-20-2011, 03:39 PM
Considering he hadn't really played much for like a year it wasn't a bad performance, no where near a bad performance in fact, far better than the Del Potro we saw late last year anyway.

As for Baghdatis, first 2 sets were stunning from him.

Agreed. He won't be winning any big titles until 2012 again. This year he might win some mm title but not until 2012 will he be back to be the monster who was capable of winning a slam..

Del Potro played better than I expected from him at this stage in his comeback. He was unlucky to face Baggy, who pretty much had the whole of the Australian Greek-Cypriot community inside Rod Laver!

Arkulari
01-20-2011, 07:07 PM
Juan is not back to his best yet but that's understandable, he was out for a very long time and lacks timing and rhythm, his serve was not as good as it can be and he was making a lot of UEs.

Baggy played very well and exploited Juan's weaknesses :yeah:

Baghdatis played solid. A bit like his glory year. Aggressive, moving well, nice to see.
:yeah:
JMDP; top 30 is a valid aim for this year; top 10 seems too far-fetched for now. No one's going to make it easier for him. But good luck for the rest of the season. :yeah:

Baggy is a very good player. I knew Delpo wouldn't stand a chance against him considering he's just coming back from an injury. I predicted he would reach R3 at best. Looks like I was right.

Given that he's not played for a year, Del Potro wasn't really that bad. I was being very optimistic hoping he'd beat Baggy in 4, but he is a bit rusty. I'm willing to give him till the US Open Series to find his feet and halt Rafa's charge for the Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows in devastating style. :p
