Tiebreaker king* Bernard Tomic makes the third round for the first time. Plays Nadal on Saturday.

*Tomic is now 8-2 in the top level in breakers.

Lopez didn't look good the whole match. Talking to himself and what not. Oh well, neither one would make it past the next hurdle. I'd rather see Tomic lose to Nadal than Lopez.

Rafa is gonna kill this guy in the next round but it is still a good run for the young fellow ;)

Feli doesn't really give a crap about serious tennis any longer, all he does is collect a bit of money everywhere :o

Pretty boy looked uncomfortable the whole match muttering constantly. Didn't ever look comfortable. I hope Tomic the Aussie tennis hero enjoys and basks in the spotlight for the next couple of days, because it ends Saturday with a beatdown at the hands of Nadal.

say what you want but the kid got tennis intelligence and seems amazingly cool for an 18 yo. you could sense he had the upper hand mentally in every set, even when he was break down in the second. obviously lopez can be a nasty player out there but still, kudos bernard. this was impressive nonetheless.

now go to the organizers and do ya "in your faaaaaace"-thing, daddy tomic. ;)

:haha: I noticed that too. At one of those change of ends, Fox Sports commentators made note of an annual kind of stand up/performing arts type event that takes place in Monte Carlo where players mock each other & apparently Lopez and Verdasco cop quite a bit abuse due to the amount of time they spend admiring themselves in front of the mirror. Narcissists. If he put half as much effort into his tennis as he does his hair...

The Australian media is already promoting Tomic like he's a hero. This from the Sydney Morning Herald: "Weekend for Bernie: Giantkiller Tomic sets up clash with Nadal". I don't think Lopez is a giant. If Tomic beats Nadal, then maybe a headline like that would be appropriate.

Yeah I heard that as well.... Josh Eagle was really ripping in to Lopez, there had to be at least 10 mirror jokes during the match. But he ws right to, Lopez was pathetic... how at his age and with his experience you can't adjust to Tomic's current game and dictate the points I don't know. He was probably checking himself out in the reflection of the tv cameras...

He does hit it soft, but honestly its mostly due to his age. The majority of players at that stage have minimal power, that generally comes a few years later.

Though he may well turn out to be worse than Simon, I guess we'll see. He has good court-craft.

 No way man.

Power has nothing to do with muscles. It has to do with technique.

Tomic's a soft hitter.

I dunno whether its to do with technique or physique really, but the juniors for the most part hit softer than the pros from what I've seen on tour.

Its very noticeable imo.

I don't think so.

I actually think juniors are prone to overhitting. They try to hit winners all the time from just about any place.

01-20-2011, 06:19 AM
We must watch different juniors then

I agree that the overhitting and poor shot selection is also a trait though

Good to see another youngster stepping up :yeah: Even if he gets his ass handed to him by Nadal, it's a good effort to reach the 3rd round.

GlennMirnyi is right, juniors are usually prone to ballbashing syndrome. And Tomic is an aberration to tennis, I mean a 6"4 pusher with no power whatsoever. He still has a very very long way to go to be at least as good as Simon though.

Another extremely weak AO draw for Tomic. Tomic isn't a top level player yet. Still has alot to improve on if he wants to get to there let alone contending for Slams. He can definitely reach the top level but so can alot of other players.

BTW can anyone elaborate on the Tomic age rumours that occasionally pop up but won't go away. I'm pretty certain that it would be just a rumour but I'm interested to see what the clams are based on.

What rumours mate? Somebody suggested earlier that Tomic's lack of power is due to his young age but that's just dumb. Berankis is barely 2 years older, 20cm shorter, 20kg lighter and has some serious pop in his shots. It's all about technique. Besides Tomic's overall movement is average and he really needs to step it up if he's to do some damage on the tour.

There are a few rumours that he is actually a couple of years older than he is. It isn't big news as they have been around for a few years now but I've never heard a full explanation as to why some people believe he is older than he is.

So much for the young age excuse for the lack of power if it's true. I've never heard of them though. Now I'd like to hear some explanations too.

We had the same rumours going around about Dokic when she was breaking through. Who cares. It's obvious Tomic is young, look how much he grew in height this past year.

As for his slices and different game and posters attacking him for being boring etc, well I think it is refreshing to see his style - most players bash the same old topspin shots from the baseline (not all but most). So it is great to see someone with a completely different style. Not only that, he is doing rather well with it. Beating 3 x top 100 players in Sydney qualifiers last week, and 2 x top 50 players at the AO. Good on him. Hope to see a lot more of him. I love how he disrupts all the regulars. :)
