Just wow. Complete meltdown.

Janko served for the match in the 3rd, and had match points in the 4th.

Credit to Verdasco for continuing to fight after his little ankle problem in the 4th (facing match points) but Janko seriously blew it.

Althought Tipsa couldn't hit a 1st serve to save his life, big big stuff from El Jefe from Madrid.

After the lost tiebreak, Tipsa was broken. Treated for MTO, and no footwork anymore.

Meltdown in the 5th set but I couldn't call it choke in terms of the way Cockdasco saved match points :) I saw matches with more match points saved but can't recall 3 match points saved in that style - especially the 2nd and the 3rd one were tremendous :) Excellent 4th set overall, Nando becomes a new 5-set specialist :bigclap:

Since the beginning of the tie-break Tipsarevic's mind was somewhere else, it's strange he didn't even break his racquet :o

It's actually bizarre how predictable the outcome of this match was.

Choking mugfest, NID.

Tipsy blew 3 MP's on serve, one of which he was in total control of and merely needed to put away a decent volley.

I wish that Tipsy would have just retired at the beginning so the Nole-Dodig match would come sooner.

Absolute joke of a match. Just as bad as we feared it could be.

Janko was 6-5 40*-15 in the fourth but atrocious vollying on the second match point cost him the match. In the fifth he just gave up, which was just pathetic.

Terrible, just terrible.

Choke of the year.

MP Tips! lose 3 in a row for the break, lose the tb to 0 (doublefaulting the final one), broken to love (doublefaulting final one), verdasco holds to love.

Only shame is verdasco couldn't break to love again, could have been 26+ points in a row.

I agree Tipsarevic is definitely gonna feel the effects this match for quite a while. I honestly thought he was gonna win this and send Verdasco packing, but what happened at the end of that 4th set was rather unreal for me to watch. The way he just caved in and tanked the 5th set was just flat out bad, not only for himself, but tennis as well.

Credit Nando for being a big fighter, but I would've rather he won this on a more competitive ending, as opposed to just being handed the match like that.

Nidhogg
01-19-2011, 04:43 AM
Prime display of the ballstriking of modern day tennis from what I saw at the end of the fourth. That kind of unrelentless clean hitting back and forth makes you think of a videogame.

Tipsarevic had it all lined up good on at least one of his three matchpoints, but he didn't quite stick the volleys and Verdasco ended up pulling of a ridiculous pass off the forehand. Good win for the 9th seed who goes on to face Nishikori.

Tipsy was superb for two and a half sets, fantastic serving and hitting off the ground. High drama, high tension and all credit to Verdasco for continuing to fight and save those match points. Tipsy had hands of stone on that second match point but awesome forehand from Nando to keep it going. It's a shame the fifth set turned out to be a nothing-affair but Janko seemed to disappear after getting bagelled in the tiebreaker. Guess the moral here is if you're gifted a second opportunity to serve out the match in a fourth set, you damn well better take it.

Congrats, Verdasco... you badly needed this win. Nishikori next; should be a good one.

It doesn't automatically have to be painful for the next five hours. He landed too hard, probably felt some pain, took a moment to shake it off, and was fine. Nobody told Janko to fuck up the rest of that set, so it's not like it's Fernando's fault that he choked

I agree. I'm starting to see some of the brilliance I've seen from Nando in earlier slams. He actually doesn't win in straights many of the times, but his fighting spirit gets him through, even though he is under 0-2.

That said.. I don't know how he'll do in his next match, he must be drained after this. Good thing the bageled Tipsy in the last set though. Anyway, just getting to R3 is an improvment for Nando, and I think he should be pleased with that considering his results these last few months..

This is not choking. It's not about nerves or loss of confidence or any of the 'sports psychology' crap. This is what comes from being too much of an 'intellectual' -- reading Dostoyevsky and having haikus tattoed on your body. Once he couldn't serve it out, he didn't want the win; figured he didn't deserve it. The only way to save his tortured artist soul is to lose now, or his victory would be tainted, not pure. Alas...

There's a reason why athletes should be a little bit dumb.
Get out of your damn head and play tennis.

Oops, forgot about that one.. Thanks for posting!

Still, it has been a few months with Nando playing less than stellar tennis, so it's nice to see him grind out a win. Even though one of the reasons he won was because Tipsy choked badly. I still think it's awesome that he came back from 0-2 in sets.

I think Nishikori will win the next match. Nishi is a better player than Nando these days, plus Nando must be drained from this match. Hope I'm wrong though..
