Too patchy, some great winners and points and periods of 20 minutes of errors.

I love the Australian. Congratulations, Big Dace; unlucky, Rusty. Great first round match, and it could still be the match of the week come Friday. The quality wasn't always of the highest order, but it was a blockbuster for the emotional commitment invested by the players.

Roll on tomorrow (or tonight, depending on where in the world you are)!

Up and down more than 10 rollercoasters, but he gets the win. There were quite a few moments from Dave's magic bag in there. That BH slice pass to get BPs for the last break was absolutely ridiculous. Get rested Dave

Then he saved 2 real match points in the 5th.

What, this match was on the BBC? :o I spent all of the 5th set (when I started watching) on a stream that kept getting laggier and laggier as the match went on. Hence, I missed the last two games (due to my own stupidity) which seem to have been magic from what people are describing.

What a big heart from Nalbandian. I admit I was skeptic about his chances prior to the match, thinking that if it went to a 5th set it would really be Hewitt's to lose. To be proven wrong this way, just wow. Berankis will love his chances in the next round, but if David's fight today is anything to go by he will still believe in his chances.

Best R1 match so far - yes, it wasn't stunning quality throughout the 5th but fatigue had kicked in well and truly yet they still managed to play some of the longest rallies of the match - and end it with a winner. Kudos to both guys but especially Nalby for proving a point and not letting those awful line calls at the end distract him.

Wow, entertaining match. You almost knew that this would go to 5 sets. Lleyton should have taken it in the 4th tough, he played a bad tiebreak.

Incredible match, Vamos David! I thought it was over in the third set with nalbandian's constant barrage of UE's, but he kept hanging in there.

Hewitt was up 3-1* 40-0 in the 4th set, and had 2 MP's later in the 5th.

I was sure it was over when Nalbandian got expectedly broken serving for match at *5-4, but he still kept fighting even with cramps, and pulled out some awesome shots. Great to see him not give up.

I don't know how he'll do next round, but Im already satisfied, this was his best match in years :)

Hewitt has been poor at closing out matches for years. I get so annoyed when he wins in a tight one after leading and then everyone claims it was 'gutsy'. He didn't win today but should've closed it out in the 4th set. Nalbandian made him pay.

Too many chances Lleyton - but Nalbandian played great on so many of them. He definitely doesn't close out a match like he used to.

Huge match, wish I was there. Got all nostalgic watching it - shame we won't be seeing these guys put on shows like this for too much longer.

Unfortunate for Lleyton, but if he stays healthy, hopefully he can avoid seeds this early in the slams. To string together an uninterupted year, thats the dream!

A few great rallies, particularly one which Hewitt won in possiblt the second set? You'll know which one I mean. I thought Hewitt was acting like a prick with the ball boys/girls and umpire. None of them did much wrong. However, some of the line calls were fucking abymsal haha. If you see how far in/out they were on the big screen it was quite embarassing. Great match though. He is playing on the same way like he was playing when he came on the tour for the first time . He was and still is a great counter puncher but in today's game this doesn't work . He hasn't improved single shot since the first time that I saw him . He can have better days and worse days but with his game in today's tennis he can't to anything . It's now too late for him to change anything but I was always wondering WTF he was doing 4 or 5 years ago . With the years tennis became more and more strength sport and all these was happening ahead of his eyes . He knew that he would never be able to compete with " new " guys in this segment but he had to improve that what he has and adopt his game to new standards on other ways . I never liked him but I am very disappointed with progress of his game and carrier . He had to do something to prevent that what is happening to him today

He's older and lost a step, simple as that. Not to mention hit hard by injuries. Today's game is more defense/retrieval oriented than ever. If Hewitt was in his prime right now, I'm sure he'd do just fine on tour. He'll never be a power player or big server and he shouldn't try to be. That hurts him because he doesn't have a serve to fall back on like Andy Roddick and has to fight for everything. But he's made the most of his abilities. Frankly, of the two out there today, Hewitt's career is not the one I would criticize.

I completely disagree. There is nothing else Hewitt could have done. It's not like he was ever going to become a big hitter, especially not in '06-'07 at the age he was then. He's been super fit for years and I don't think can add much muscle; it's irrelevant anyway since added muscle wouldn't put more pace on his shots and it would detract from his biggest strength anyway which is his movement.

Hewitt has really done all that he can in this sport with his frame and talent.

He hired Roche to teach him how to come to the forecourt and volley and he has tried to add juice to his serve. At least, those are some of the improvements he is/was trying to bring to his game.

He has to bulk up significantly to gain the strength to hit through opponents nowadays because there is no way he can learn to time the ball like, for example, Davydenko. The bulking effort would have come at a cost of movement though.

He also has his hip issue to think about so all in all, I don't think he could have done any better.

I agree, he´s made the most of his abilities. His game is not enough to compete with the top players, hasn´t been for years, but it´s not like he could have suddenly developed a big serve or thunderous groundstrokes. He still has that fighter attitude, which still keeps him playing at this level, even if it isn´t enough to keep him winning. I actually like him more than 4-5 years ago, he doesn´t give up, and that´s something.

Good fight from Dave, will probably be too exhausted to go far in the tournament, but a good win anyway!

I guarentee no one wanted to play either of these guys. Hewitt could easily have gone to the quarters with the way he was playing. Ditto for Nalbandian.

Hewitt's game is actually more offensive than some of the other counterpunchers on tour (think Simon) in that he really does go for outright winners when he's counterpunching. Also he's never really developed a good offpace game (slices, or dying medium paced sitters) like Murray or Santoro. In fact part of his problem is that his game is really designed to take out serve and volleyers (he probably has the second or third best passing shots in the game, behind Fedal) moreso than aggressive baseliners.

However he's lost a step, and it definitely shows.

Nalby! :worship:

I watched the last 2 sets. It's been a while since I watched Nalby in action and now I know why people rate him so highly. What a talented shot maker! He squandered that opportunity to serve it out but he came up with some clutch play to save match points and eventually win the match.

There's been enough spoken about the volley at matchpoint down and the sexy backhand slices down the line, but I am surprised and I read through the whole thread; there's hardly any mention of Nalbandian's resistance to choking this time. He was 5-3 up in the fourth set, and again 4-2 up in the fifth. I thought it was 2 times too many. But what do you know, he not only saves MPs, but breaks Hewitt to love to go up 8-7, and then serves it out without choking.

Mental giant this Nalby. :worship:

Thanks! :yeah:

And that doesn't include when he was two points away from defeat on Federer's serve in the epic TMC final against Fed :yeah:

Thanks for reminding this oft forgotten piece of glory. :worship:

This shows why King David is MTF's boy.:worship::worship::worship:
Well done King David.Your are such an enjoyable player to watch.:hatoff:

I believe last January, there was a Nalbandwagon in MTF. I think its that time of the year again. :rocker2:

Epic match made possible by Nalby's usual form in early rounds.

Hope he doesn't flame out in the next few matches and if he does win, gets it done comfortably. All signs point to that not happening but I hope I am wrong.

Berankis will have respect for Nalby's talent.

those tablets he took sure did help. are those things even legal?

Tablet for cramps? Ridiculous.

Oh, it will undoubtedly appear on youtube soon enough, both that and first saved MP with a ridiculous half-volley.

Its been removed already.

I agree in part.

Hewitt felt no need to improve his game because he managed to keep himself at the top, making slam 2nd weeks consistently, without any change. When major injuries started setting in, then he lost his speed and started a steady decline.

Hewitt playing just like in 2000 but still with success shows how weak this era is.

All those missed opportunities, in particular those in the fourth set when Dave had gone walkabout, will sting for Hewitt. Mad guts on show from both in the fifth, and good to see court Rod coming alive.

Lleyton might well be fortunate to not have spent too much time on these ultra gritty courts playing the role of a powderpuff persistence hunter. The grass is where it's at for him.

I just finished watching my tape of this match and :worship:. The last set and a half was vintage Nalbandian out there. The backhand dtl winners, short crosscourt angled winners on both sides, flick-of-the-wrist backhand shots that achieved incredible depth. That's the David we all love to see, he brings a lot to tennis. He was sadly absent from the USO last year when he played like shit in his loss to Verdy,

I'd love to see Misha vs. Nalby in the 4R, a rematch of their epic and hilarious 2004 USO 2R showdown that went 5.

Maybe nalby can stop Nadall??:eek::eek:

;)

Nalbandian is not physically in the shape to beat Nadal over best of 5 sets.

The only player I can see beating Nadal here is Murray who handles the constant Nadal attack with the left handed swinging serve and cross court forehand on the backhand wing better than any other player. The second best placed is possibly Djokovic.

Davis Cup in Sydney wasn't too close either, Lleyton.

fat dave was barely able to beat a past-his-prime lleyton hewitt. there's no way in hell he'd beat nadull. in fact, i'd be surprised if he manages to win 2 more matches in this tournament.

They don't like each other ever since the DC tie 05. I remember the stick Hewitt got when they went to Argentina a year or two ago, the cheers when he hit into the net were like they'd won the cup.

I think the stick just got worse, as if it needed another reason, when Hewitt brought two body guards to the tie. I can understand how it can rub the locals the wrong way.

"Hewitt seems to think that he's come to Iraq," said Acasuso.

Lleyton's comments are dissapointing. Well done to David, he fought brilliantly and played the big points so well. I hope he goes far in the tournament now :)
