moved up to #16 so far, if he beats Roddick he could jump to 13-14 range depending on what Almagro does, however after that it's a nice jump in points to get ahead of MOnfils and Melzer

Tough draw with a grinder like Berlocq in his first clay match. But for the rest it's a pretty good quarter. I prefer Monaco over guys like Robredo, Dolgopolov or Chela.

The strange thing about this slump is that I always thought clay was his best surface. But looking at this year's results it isn't at all. He has struggled on every single clay court match thusfar, and has made some very good results on HC.

The loss against Brown was because of terrible scheduling and his lack of rhytm, and Brown playing out of his skin. So that's possible. But last week against GGL and now his 2 bad matches in Rome I can't really get.
It looks like he has very little confidence, which is strange because he had about the best season's start ever in the first few months.

Hop he'll get better and get some clay results as well. And I hope his scheduling will get better. Plaese not a month of absence anymore.

Next match against Bolelli.

I'm still disappointed with his scheduling. He plays so little this year. If he was making final weekends of all these tournaments he'd play, I'd be okay with it, but with his result of the last months I really think he should play more.

Hope this gives him a lot of energy going into the US HC swing. He doesn't play a warm-up event before Canada though, don't know if that is wise...

R1: bye
R2: Wawrinka [2] d. Luczak 63 75

Bad performance, loads of errors from Wawrinka.
Most of the other players have a little "clay court season" after Wimbledon (five weeks clay court tournaments in Germany, Croatia, Austria, Switzerland...) but Stan only plays Gstaad out of nowhere.
After Wimbledon (grass), he played Fed Cup (indoor) and two weeks later Gstaad (clay). Next tournament is in the USA (hard court).

It is not easy to play on all surfaces in 1.5 months.
Anyway: Why hasn't he played Hamburg (or Stuttgart) as well?

R2: Young [WC] d. Wawrinka [14] 76 36 26 63 76

Bad loss from Wawrinka. The quality of match was not so good.
After the match, Wawrinka said he was a bit injured (leg).
But he should have won this match anyway.
Second and thrid set were ok.
In the fifth set he was very passive,
he was just waiting on errors from Young.
Really bizarre tactics.

He will lose QF points from last year and fall OUT OF Top 20.

With this sort of tennis, he is not worthy of Top 20.
Young was not bad, but he was beatable.

I really hope Wawrinka can improve and play better in the future against consistent player ranked lower than 50.

He lost to Brown, Bolelli and Young in the last months!

CLAY SEASON

Quarters in Monte Carlo, Seminfinal in Estoril, 3rd Round in Madrid.

That was solid, very solid.

All the losses came against ELITE players (Nadal, Delpo, Djokovic).

In all those matches he was as good as his opponent in the 1st set but still lost the set. (especially against Nadal he could have won it.)
All those second sets were a bit disappoiting.

He has play more first serves in (in big moments.)
He has to risk more in 1st set tie breaks.

Of all the elite players he has the biggest chance against Murray (as we saw in Us Open 2010 for example.)

Now we have to hope he'll draw Murray at FO.
He won't be in Top 16 though, so he will have to beat a player ranked 9-16 in 3rd round. Lopez, Monaco, Monfils are beatable.
Del Potro will be Top 8 probably, that would be good.
So he can't play against him in 3rd round.

Kat_YYZ
05-27-2012, 02:03 AM
Not bad draw. R3 seems likely. QF if he can get past Tsonga (but Tsonga has been up and down lately). Then he would get Nole in QF. Good luck Stan! :)

Good and long match against Simon.
Gamewise it was good.
Mentally it was bad. Those tiebreak were poor.
He has to imrpove his game a bit and play better on important points to competete with the best players.

R4 against Tsonga will be hard as well. I hope he can win in 4.
Somewhat like 67 64 76 61.

Kat_YYZ

Ok, French Open was ok but not very succesful.
He could have won this match against Tsonga.
And he can't play five sets all the time.

Now onto grass.

WIMBLEDON

I think it's a good decision not to play a grass tournament before Wimbledon. He will have long matches although it is grass.
Therefore it's good that he doesn't have to play matches this week.

He is good on grass and I hope he can show up his talent and he will have a good draw. We know, more than 50% are the draw.

06-18-2012, 01:34 PM
His losses against ISTOMIN (R1, 2010) and BOLELLI (R2, 2011) were not so good although both opponents played each a good match.

RNW
06-27-2012, 09:38 PM
Where is US OPEN 2010 form?
And AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2011?

He lost against Melzer.
He is always waiting on his chances - and then the match is over.

He was the better server, but in rallies, Melzer was clearly better.
The shotmaking and the attacking tactics from Wawrinka are just not good enough.
He played like a defensive baseliner with offensive shots.
This can not function.

Disappoiting result again. Again and again.

ohhh Stan  If only you could have won that first set tb vs Nadal.

Stan has withdrawn from the Moscow tournament starting next week. Well, probably smart since he went deep here and will have Basel the week after. I believe he's currently 5 points () ahead of Roger in the ATP race.

Congrats Stan for qualifying to the Semis! I hope he really wins against Djokovic - I am not sure how Djokovic is good right now, but it is now the time!

Also, I never knew that Stan was the flag bearer of Switzerland last Olympics. Fed was the flag bearer during 2008, and now it looks like the spotlight is now on him. Would be interesting if we would have an all-Swiss Finals at the WTF. London seemed to have been good for Stan lately. Here is an article from CNN about Stan carrying the flag:

(CNN) -- Some of the world's top tennis stars will have the honor of carrying their countries' flags at Friday's opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics, but one of the sport's biggest names is taking a back seat.

Not due to injury, like Beijing 2008 singles champion Rafael Nadal -- who has had to relinquish his role as Spain's flag bearer -- but because one of the game's renowned gentlemen thinks it's time to share the prestigious job.

While former world No. 1s Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova will lead the way for Serbia and Russia, Switzerland's team will be led into the Olympic stadium by a gold medalist, and one of the European nation's finest tennis players -- though he's not the one that you'd expect to see in the limelight.
Stanislas Wawrinka has spent his career in the shadow of Roger Federer, but on Friday the eyes of the world will be on the man known as "Stan" -- and not his great friend.

World No. 1 Federer, the most successful men's tennis player of any era, declined the chance to carry the Swiss flag for the third time.
Defending Olympic gold Federer: London best chance for gold Fernando Gonzales' Olympic box-set Federer reflects on Wimbledon win
"I just felt it was important to give someone else a chance. In Switzerland we believe that," the 30-year-old said.
"I told the Swiss Olympic Committee that they should choose someone else and they chose my partner, Stan Wawrinka. It's a great, great honor for him. I couldn't have won the gold without him, everybody knows that. I think they chose the right guy."

A tale of two careers

Wawrinka has won three tournament titles to Federer's 75, and $5.5 million in prize money to the 16-time grand slam champion's $73 million, but they have one thing in common: an Olympic gold medal.
Four years ago in Beijing, seeded only fourth, the Swiss duo overcame the odds to win the men's doubles competition -- cementing a partnership that began when they started practicing together in the late 1990s.

Wawrinka, nearly four years Federer's junior, was just 16 at the time.
"He was already number six in the world -- after 10 minutes I was completely red!" Wawrinka told CNN's Open Court of his first session with Federer. "I was dead tired, and so nervous to play with him.
"He's the best, it's good for any player. We'll be practicing one week and then playing each other the next, but it's not the fact that we share nationalities that makes playing him hard, it's that he's the best in the world."

American idol

Wawrinka, like Federer, idolized seven-time Wimbledon winner Pete Sampras when he was growing up.
"I wasn't good until I was 17 -- I never even won the Swiss Championship," the 2003 French Open boys' champion said. "Sampras was a great athlete and I was a big fan. That's why I focus on being an allrounder."
Federer matched Sampras' record tally at the All England Club when he beat Andy Murray in this month's final, and Wawrinka will face Britain's world No. 4 in the opening round of the Olympic singles competition

Despite slipping down the world rankings from a career high of ninth in 2009 to 25th ahead of London 2012, Wawrinka still holds hopes of success.
"I feel I'm playing the best tennis of my career right now -- the top 40 is just so strong, the strongest it's ever been, maybe. With this top 40 you have to fight for every match. To break back into it is more mental than physical, for sure. It's about confidence," he said
"Sometimes I put too much pressure on myself. It's not good. I'm too tight, because I want to win. That's why I need to focus on what's going on on the court, not off of it."

Family ties
His drop in form coincided with the birth of his first child, daughter Alexia, in 2010, while last year he separated from his wife Ilham Vuilloud.
"Having a daughter and being a tennis pro changes everything. It's hard to train so much, but it's great to see she's interested in what I'm doing -- if I'm playing tennis, she wants to play tennis," he said.
Wawrinka fondly recalls Beijing, where he and Federer beat top-ranked doubles duo Mike and Bob Bryan in the semifinals before winning gold.

"We played our best tennis against the Bryan brothers -- it was the toughest and most important win. Whilst we talked strategy for the finals afterwards, it was made easier knowing we were playing great tennis," he said.
"In the first game I wasn't playing well, but Roger really helped me to be comfortable. We've known each other for so long, but even we were surprised at how easy we found it on the court. It was so natural, and talking helped a lot -- we're very honest around the court."

Their close relationship translated well off the court too, particularly in the Olympic Village.
"At night all of the Swiss athletes would play cards. We played a lot against the soccer team -- we were the best though, you can ask them!"

Together for life

If Federer's inclusion for China was a foregone conclusion, Wawrinka's presence was anything but guaranteed.
"Roger had a lot of great players to choose from (as a partner). It was a tough choice but in the end he chose me. We were having a great time and I think that's part of the reason we won -- I was happy for him and he was happy for me," he said.
"I was almost crying at the medal ceremony. We had to joke around to stop the tears and start laughing instead. We used our friendship to stop from crying in front of everybody!
"It was the best moment of my career because it wasn't just about tennis. It was about sport, it was about Switzerland, it's a dream for everyone and to share it with someone added to the enjoyment."
Federer will go into London 2012 seeking the one major title that eludes him -- Olympic gold in the singles. He begins his campaign against Colombia's Alejandro Falla, the man who took him to five sets at Wimbledon in 2010.
Federer reached the semifinals as a teenager at Sydney 2000 but lost in the playoff for the bronze, then crashed out in the second round in Athens and the last eight in Beijing.
"The day before the (doubles) quarterfinals Roger lost to James Blake in the singles and I had to prove to him that he could trust me," Wawrinka said.
"Once we started playing well I could tell he got over the loss and said to himself, 'Okay, let's do something in the doubles now.' That was the moment, and now we have a gold medal -- together, for life."

I am not sure about the drama with his own family, but he seemed to be together again, which probably have supported Stan too in his current career. I hope he continues, and who knows he might be back for the WTF again next year. Wish him the best for him and his family.

It's great to see that Stan finished his most successful season in his career so far with a SF at the WTF.

I honestly didn't expected this before the tournament, considering he qualified for the first time for the event.

Maybe it's fitting that he played his last match of the season against the player against whom he had 2 unbelievable 5 set matches this year with.

One of the best decisions Stan ever made was to start working with Magnus Norman :)

They are a really great team and there is hopefully more to come.

zjtennis, Stan and his wife are back together since February 2012 (or at least Stan announced it at that time).

Start of Transcribed Interview

Q. Do you feel that you played well?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I feel I play my best tennis during one set and one break. That's for sure. I was feeling really good on the court. I was moving well, feeling really aggressive, and I play my best set for sure by far.

Then wasn't easy. He get injury. I saw that. He wasn't serving at all. He wasn't moving during one set. Then was a completely different match. I had to focus on myself, to try to find the way just to win it.

I saw that and I knew it was really, really difficult for him. I was unhappy for that because normally that's not the way I want to win the match.

But it's a final. At the end I won in four sets. I think I finish well the match. Yeah, to get the win, it's just amazing for me.

Q. You must have so many different emotions going through your head. Was it like a rollercoaster for you?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, yeah, it's quite crazy what's happening right now. I never expect to win a Grand Slam. I never dream about that because for me, I was not good enough to beat those guy.

During the match tonight was important. I talk a lot with Magnus who has been in that situation, to play a final. He told me it was important not to think about the result but think about the way you want to play, the way you want to win every point.

You know, was surprise how well I start the match. In the beginning, he was good, he was fit, he wasn't injury. And myself, again, I was playing amazing tennis.

Yeah, then was the second match in the match. I had to stay calm with myself just to try to stay aggressive because he was injury, but he was still trying a little bit. Was not easy. I start to be really nervous because I start to realize that I could win a Grand Slam.

So it wasn't easy. But at the end I just come back to the game and focus on what I want to do.

Q. Were you surprised by how relaxed you were at the start?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: In general I'm quite relaxed before the match, or the day before, the day of the match. I was nervous during the preparation, during the warmup, before to come on the court.

But then we talk with Magnus, with Severin also. They've been in that situation. What was important was to enjoy also, not to be too nervous, not to be too focused, to enjoy and be ready for the match.

I was more surprised about how well I was playing. That's for sure. I was expecting to be little bit nervous, not to move so well, especially at the beginning like I did against Djokovic.

But tonight was just the perfect start.

Q. When you went up 4 2 in the fourth set, then you played that horrible game. Now it's forgotten, but...

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: The problem is I didn't play well because I was waiting for him to miss, and that was a big mistake from myself. Because I was nervous, I was like, Okay, miss, miss, make a mistake, because I'm not going to win the match because I'm nervous; I start to realize that I can win the Grand Slam.

But then I did two good game. I was moving better, just play aggressive, and I finished well the match.

Q. What is actually winning a Grand Slam like?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: To be honest, I don't realize. I still think that I'm dreaming. It's strange feeling, you know. I saw so many final. I always try to watch the final of Grand Slam because that's where the best player are playing.

Before today for me wasn't a dream. I never expect to play a final. I never expect to win a Grand Slam. And right now I just did it. And especially the way I was playing all the tournament, it's for me a big surprise to play that well. To beat Rafa today, even if he was injury, I think I play my best first set during the match; I was ready to play four hours or five to beat Novak in the quarter, to beat Berdych in semis.

That shows me I'm doing the right thing since many years. That if you practice well, if you work hard, you will always have a chance to be in a great position to play your best tennis.

Q. When did you first hear Beckett's words and what has that meant to you in recent times and tonight?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Well, a long time ago for me. I did a tattoo only one year ago. I had that quote in my head for a long time. It was part of my life, how I see the life, and especially how I see the tennis life.

Before today, I always saying that except Roger, Rafa, Novak, you always lose, especially every week. So it's not easy because tennis life, when you lose, it's tough to get through and to take a positive from a lost, from failing from a tournament.

So that's how I see, in general, my career. I always go back to the court. I always go back to practice to try to improve myself and to give me all the chance to beat the best player in the world.

Q. Can you talk about Roger, what his support has meant to you? And have you heard from him since the match?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, Roger is a good friend. He's for me the best player ever. He's been there since so many years. He was struggling a little bit last year, but except that he's an amazing player, amazing friend, because he always wants the best for me.

He's always texting me. Even if he lost, like in the US Open, he was the first person to text me before the match or after the match.

Yeah, I didn't call so many person, but my wife, my daughter, my sister, and Roger call me. So, yeah, was nice for me. I know that he's really, really happy for me. He always wanted the best for me.

Q. In the match where much will be made about Nadal's injury, did you feel it important to get the word in with your forehand winner?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: On the winner?

Q. Yes.

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I don't care. As long as I won the match, for me doesn't matter (laughter).

Again, to be really honest, it's a final of Grand Slam, so I'm really happy to win it. But it's not the way a tennis player wants to win a match, because the opponent is injury.

But when it's happen, you have to take it. It's maybe once in my life that I will appear final of Grand Slam.

But Rafa is a really good friend. We always practice together. We have good relationship with his team also. He's always texting me when I won.

So was strange to play him in the final. But I was really sad for him. I really hope that it's not too bad for him because he was already injury last year, and he came back the better player in the world. He's No. 1 now. He won so many title last year. He's someone that we need in tennis.

So I really hope for him that it's just something that happen tonight and he's going to be fine for the rest of the season.

Q. You said before you didn't think you were so good. It's more surprising for you to win a slam or to be No. 3 in the world?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: To win a slam, to be No. 3, both for me is a big surprise. But I think more to win a slam. Because in the ranking you can be No. 3 without winning a slam. But now it's both happening, so it's a big surprise.

It's amazing feeling. I saw Roger winning so many Grand Slam in the past, so now it's my turn to win one. If you look the 10 past year, except del Potro, it's only the top four guys who was winning all the Grand Slams.

So, yeah, I will need time to realize what I did in these two weeks. Because at the end, even if Rafa was injury, I think I deserve that Grand Slam because I won against Djokovic, No. 2; I won against Rafa.

I did amazing two weeks, and I was playing my best tennis ever.

Q. You had a long conversation with the umpire while he was having his back treated. Your language is French, the umpire speaks French. Yet you had it in English. Did you want us to hear it?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: No, I didn't know he was speaking French. We always speak English together. But what did you hear?

Q. We heard it all.

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: So you don't need my answer.

Q. Why did you go on so long with him?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Because I just wanted to know what was the problem of Rafa. Because before he ask the physio for me, he was checking his feet. I didn't know really what was the problem.

Normally when the physio is coming on the court, the umpire always say the opponent why he's coming. He didn't want to tell me, so I get pissed, and I think it's my (indiscernible.)

Q. Were you surprised by the fact that the crowd booed him when he came back on?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, I think it was not that nice, especially Rafa. We all know that he's a great guy, a great player. He's always a really fair player. He always tries his best. He is always fighting.

The problem for me, it was not that he was taking a physio, that he left the court. I just wanted to know why, what was this problem, just to know for the rest of the match.

But, yeah, was quite strange that the crowd start to boo him.

Q. Was it difficult for you that you were the underdog so everyone was going for you in the beginning, then when Nadal became injured they all went for Nadal? Did that become difficult?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: No, not in that way. It was difficult to focus and to still play good because the match was really strange.

But, you know, I had two amazing week here. I think I had my best support ever in a Grand Slam. Since last year, it's just amazing to come back here and to have that much support on the court.

Q. Are you still going to Novi Sad?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, for sure. Maybe you don't know, but Davis Cup, it's really important for me. I'm really proud. It's a big honor to play for my country. So for sure I'm still thinking to go there. I don't know how I'm going to get there exactly, if I'm still going to be alive after tonight, but I'm going to go there (smiling).

Q. How do you plan to celebrate tonight?

STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I don't know. With my team, with my family. Depends what time we finish here, if we don't take too much time of me. For sure I'm going to enjoy well. I don't know where. Maybe just at the hotel.

There's a big chance I get drunk tonight, but we'll see.

Yes, indeed. I thought he had a chance, game-wise, I just wasn't sure how he would cope mentally with his first GS final.

I would have loved it to have been an all-Swiss final, though, especially in the circumstances. Well, at WTF both failed at the SF stage, here one made it through to the final, ... I don't suppose there's some sort of mathematical progression here? :)
