I ended up not staying at the library very long yesterday and I'm not planning on having to go today. I ended up using Simon as one of my critics to compare Kael to and then I also found Canby. I had photocopied Simon's reviews of the films I wanted to look at before my last class, and after searching for others and being annoyed I found Canby, but I didn't feel like going to the basement of the library and dealing with microfiche and printing stuff out from microfiche and all that so I just paid for the articles from the NYT website and printed them out at home.. it was much easier that way, lol. So far I have about 9 pages and I haven't even begun to discuss my issue yet (a few of those pages are left over from my rough draft that I haven't even looked at). I've been writing my introduction, a short bio for her, and then talking about context.

I told AQ my revised thesis, but I'm not sure if I told you yet, but basically it's on Kael's views on violence in movies in the 1970s as compared to the views of other critics, Simon and Canby mainly... then depending on how it goes I will talk a bit about if their views differed when reviewing war movies, and if that sort of violence in film was more acceptable because of the culture of the 1970s and that everyone had become used to seeing violence with war because of Vietnam.

cobalt60

Sounds like a good topic. Not as broad as before. I bet you will write a good paper out of that. And I had forgotten about Vincent Canby! Good choices.

savesthedizzle
11-30-2005, 08:56 PM
Currently I'm discussing that the 1970s were a pretty violent time, so it was reflected in the films, and about how regulations were loosened that allowed films to become more violent during that time period. I'm mentioning the Weather Underground, Kent State, the Munich Olympics and of course Vietnam. If you can think of other big violence things, let me know, lol!

Jess, I don't know if this will fit in your topic, but the kidnapping and killing of Aldo Moro, one of Italy's longest-serving post-war Prime Ministers, in 1978 was really a big issue then.

There is also the Patty Hearst case in 1974. Also the IRA activities and the killing of Lord Mountbatten in the late 70s.

Well right now I am just drinking my coffee before starting stuff around the house. Hubs is teaching the 7thgraders in the local public school system today and tomorrow mornings so after I finish my coffee I will be off. I have been missing the guys but they seem to be away a bit. It is always good to take a break from this addiction called MTF- just to keep yourself on a steady path. And yes usually "vacation" days are spent doing stuff that needs doing and not relaxing. I always joke with hubs and wonder why I did not marry a "housewife".

I've solved the mystery. The last 3 posts Adam made were all in that Primyskinadonnalova's thread "Critique of the top 10 players." I think that Primyskinadonnalova got so angry over being made the fool by Adam that he tracked him down, kidnapped him, and has him tied up in his basement right now.

WHERE IS ADAM?!!?

Read my darling,SW, read!!

I bought myself another book today :D I still have 1 in the "to read" pile, but I am stocking up for when I go home.

I just got back from seeing Pride & Prejudice. :inlove:

Now, I have never exactly been a fan of Keira Knightley (pretty... yes... talented... errmmmm) but in this movie she was actually rather good. She surprised me. I was scared to see her play one of my favorite literary characters, but she passed the test.

More importantly, whoever that stud was that played Mr. Darcy.... :hearts: I mean, I LOVE my Colin Firth, and he will always be my personal favorite Darcy, but oh my goodness, this man in this version is  :inlove:

The movie was good, fair representation of the book... = two thumbs up. :yeah: :yeah:

In a weird coincidence, one of the previews before the movie was for a new Colin Firth movie... I am pretty surprised Colin is in it actually, I never would have pegged him for this role.. but he's a father of a whole lot of children and they scare away all their nannies, and then one comes who's a witch and they hate her, and they get rid of her, but then they discover they need her? I don't know, lol, but I'm pretty sure the adorable little boy from Love Actually is also in this movie as one of the children, and the combination of Colin Firth + Love Actually child may be too much for me to resist and I may have to go see this movie even though (to me) it looks incredibly stupid.

savesthedizzle
12-02-2005, 09:22 PM
Also about the movie, it was so bizarre to me that Jena Malone was in it. Since when does she play happy teenagers instead of bizarre depressed ones. The entire movie I was like, "That looks like Jena Malone, but it cannot possibly BE Jena Malone.. she's not British!" So I waited for the credits, and indeed it was her. Boggles my mind.

And, so we can all visually see... the new Mr. Darcy... I will discover his name eventually.. Matthew MacFadyen it appears is his name. :hearts: He's 31, and unfortunately married with a child.

And the movie is called "Nanny McPhee" and Emma Thompson plays the nanny role. And she writes the screenplay too. :p

I can't believe the thread was on the second page. I thought Adam showed up and changed the title that's why I couldn't find it.
