i think for all of us,this championship is unplanned, because robin had got another one in Rotterdam and Marseille is the back-to-back tournament.

Estoril may not be a proper choice,it's just ATP250. I think he should have a week off instead to focus on the higher tournaments.

Yeah, I think he should leave Estoril for Montanes :p

But seriously, he should focus on the bigger tournaments, maybe he can win another one. Maybe even a slam if he's lucky.

Actually,i think there is an advantage for robin taking part in Estoril...estoril is a lower tournament, not all of the first-class players will join in...it can be easy to have a good result(maybe get this title..) which can give him enough courages to keep on fighting...

Good point, but I don't want him to get tired in the bigger tournaments.
He needs to be fresh if he's going to win a big title.

Really!!! this year, Robin's clay season will really tough, Monte Carlos, Barcelona, Estoril, Rome, Madrid, RG. OMG:worship:, 6 clay tours in a row ( if adding IW, Miami, Halle and Wimbledon, it will be 10 tours in a row), hope Robin will skip some of them. I reallt worry wbout this strength, how come he registers too many tours like that. I think he will certainly skip Estoril and maybe Barcelona

_Chaz

Yes, Robin should really skip Estoril, it's just not necessary.
You know, only the best 2 ATP 250 results count (or sometimes 3 if the ATP 500 aren't good enough) and he already won Brisbane and still has Bastad in his points until July. And there's still Marseille and Halle to play, that's enough 250's.
I just hope he skips Estoril. Otherwise he became quite a scheduling mug :o

His past scheduling during the fall was awful. Last year, he played at Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Shanghai, and Stockholm all back to back. I hope he doesn't do that this year. I would skip Kuala Lumpur because slow and low bouncing doesn't suit Robin's game. If he really wants to play during that week, he should play at Bangkok, which plays more quickly than Kuala Lumpur. I would just skip it because three back to back tournaments is already more than enough. Valencia is also slow and low bouncing, which doesn't prepare him for Paris. He should play at Basel instead, which plays much more quickly than Valencia, and is a good lead-in for Paris.

And of course he gets a nigh impossible draw in IW. He'll probably loose to his mini fed nemesis Kohli in the third, if not that, then either DelPo or Murray, but not thinking that he'll beat Kolhi 2 times in a row. Plus this is outdoors and it's supposed to be windy, which Robin dislikes.. Dark weeks ahead :p Happy post right, I'm just furious that he always get such hard draws with opponents that dont suit him at all in most "big" tournaments. :/

Playing a 250 instead of a 1000, where he can't gain any points as he's already won 2 of them this year
On top of that he has to play 4 weeks in a row (Barca, Estoril, Madrid, Rome) while by playing MC he would have had a week of rest between Barcelona and Madrid

Robin got one hell of a setback after the success that started the year with sickness, footinjury and draws from hell and on top a Delpo that finds his 09 form for this match hehe ;). Good to start over from scratch on Clay. I will be mad at him if he doesn't ask for a WC to Monte Carlo in 2 weeks.

Robin is right though he didn't move well and hasn't served well lately outdoors in these conditions (also at AO), such a difference to the animal indoors.

I like it. Verdasco/Raonic suits him pretty well. Almagro might not but hey he lost to Tsonga in Madrid so likely not in excellent shape. The QF wasn't going to be easy no matter what. And let's remember he has dished out 6-1 sets in his two last meetings with Djokovic (lost one of them...)

What is annoying is that Murray ALWAYS get a better draw. When Sod was #4 he got a worse draw. Now he is back at #5 and he gets worse draws. It's getting stupid.

Also first tournament where he will have his new coach present! Lets hope for a good start

Wonder if his medical timeout was something serious today vs Djokovic. I don't think so. Hopefully he only gave up and wanted and excuse to stop running. He was sweating a lot in Rome and even if his play was sometimes very good he seemed to get tired after long rallies. I think his scheduling wasn't very clever 2011 throwing Estoril in there.

Now he can rest for French Open. I've been dreading all those points to defend all year. Maybe he can get a good draw until QF for once.

Yes I think you are correct also about the time it happened. This is not good news at all. Got to wonder why Robin didn't retire right away because he must have been in some pain throughout the rest of the match AND risked an even bigger tear. The positive news is that it wont really prevent his RG start. It's not the type of injury that makes you unable to move or so and it generally heals quite well. But the training and preparations will need to be changed. Maybe postpone the tennis training and do some low intensity cardio training etc to keep the body and the healing going and wait as long as possible to get back to the court.

Felt during the match with Djokovic that Soderling really gave it all in terms of defense and seems like he paid for it. Should have opened slower. Maybe Murray watched the match at his hotel...

Good performance in Dusseldorf. Shame with the swedish team however. If something happens to Soderling swedish tennis would look horrible. Good news is that his groin isn't bothering him much at all but even if it did he wouldn't talk about so hard to be completely sure. Also nice milestone career milestone with 300 wins. Also noted he went over $10M career prize money recently. His career really picked up since 2009!

Now for the dreaded RG. QF would be acceptable. SF would be very very good. Final for the 3rd straight year? If that happens it would be insane. If he wins? Well that would be a miracle and will make MTF go crazy especially if he takes down Nadal/Djokovic (or even more crazy: both of them). One can only dream. Think chances are there for another classic Soderling RG at least.

Don't despair. I think it looks pretty good for him until QF. Maybe [10]Mardy Fish in 4th Round. Better than getting Almagro/Verdasco/Gasquet or something.

In QF his other options were: Federer (Robin hates to play Federer...very bad matchup), Djokovic (Even worse than Nadal in current form) Murray (maybe best option. I'd say Robin has a edge over him on clay but Murray has the edge on hardcourt)

If Robin want good draws he need to get nr4 seed back. Too bad Murray got the best draw ever. He could increase the lead so I'm going to root for Murray's opponents :)

two quotes that say a lot about how competitive Soderling is. From during the match today:

1-1 second set.

Robin screams: – Det är helt jävla ofattbart! (This is f**ing unbelievable!)

2-1 after missing several breakpoints

Robin screams: -Som en jävla invalid rör jag mig. Träben! (I'm moving like a f***ing retard. Wooden leg!)

Quote to swedish press after match:

I should have won easier but I'm happy that i won.
First set I played well, then it got closer than it should have been. I relaxed a little and he improved his game.

Orka_n
05-24-2011, 10:24 PM
He is, but what I have a bigger problem with is his inability to give any credit to the opponent during a match. Just like Goodall said.
Today, many of the breakpoints Soda wasted, Harrison stole those from him with good play. But Robin was still complaining and mumbling angrily about his own performance even though he didn't really do anything wrong, the opponent just upped his game. That happens a lot, actually... Robin gets pissed off when he loses points even though the opponent obviously deserved it. Rosengren should talk to him about that.

MaxPower
05-24-2011, 10:28 PM
yeah usually he just mumbles some similar things to himself but now he really screamed it out. He must have been pumped up to almost Jonas Björkman Wimbledon level who did some even worse swedish statements in a match.

It's a good sign however that Soderling is so pumped up and as long as he keeps it in Swedish he won't get any warnings from upsetting the refs

kind of reminds me of a certian other top player that i dont like to much..and lets just say robin better not start acting like him in more than that way

i think he just remembers how easily he took care of harrison last time and thought he'd do the same today so its proibably a case of him underestimating harrison more than anything

he might also be frustrated more because he had the oppertunity to win in straights(when he was up 5-3 in the tiebreak) and then 5-4 and serving but couldnt

I didnt see it, but I hear he didn't play great. At least he won though.. I think for someone to win a grand slam they always have at least 1 match where they play crap. Lets be positive :)Robin didn't play bad at all. It was a very good start.

two quotes that say a lot about how competitive Soderling is.

:eek:there are so many dirty words in Robin's mumbling.....

Someone told me robin called a medical time-out for his hand ,how about that??

Why do all the articles I read say he "struggled" and was disappointed with his performance? Stupid articles, I should have learnt by now not to believe everything I read!!Because in many cases the reporters don't know anything about tennis. :) They look at the difference in rankings and think "Oh, Soderling is much better, he should have won this in 3 easy ones obviously. Since he didn't he must've played badly.". Many of my non-tennisnerd friends are the same, they overrate the importance of rankings in a match-up.

Hm... I think Robin should make the quarters with his draw. Simon in R4 might be a test, but up until then it should be smooth sailing.

Looks to be Baghdatis in R3 and Fish/Simon in R4. Baghdatis suits him well and a loss to him would be as surprising as a R2 loss to Ramos.

Mardy Fish sort of impressed me from what I saw of him so far. Usually doesn't look good on clay but he got the confidence this year and I'd say he got almost like a 50-50 shot vs Simon. I'd actually prefer if its Fish and not Simon though because Simon is the type that never bends over and could push R4 to 4/5 sets even if Robin starts good and don't want a tired Soderling for the QF

Some good things from his first 2 matches in RG is that

he wins more than 80%+ of the points with the first serve in. Going to be very hard to break if he can serve 60%+ first serves

hits the ball well. Confident. Doesn't mind going to the net or walk in on 2nd serves any chance he gets

some bad things:

I personally think he doesn't move as good as 2010. Maybe the previous leg problems. maybe saving energy. We will see

Sometimes bad body language after missing BPs/easy shots. Don't think it hurts Robin himself but when the opponent sees that you are frustrated they sometimes raise their game and Soderling gets a tougher match just because of that. No reason to show such things. Should stick with the head in the towel tactic

Bring on 3rd round! Looks to be Leo Mayer

Yes my dream QF and hopefully Nadal fans nightmare QF is coming up! So happy for Soderling. He defends a big chunk of his final points anyway with his QF spot and he must feel great atm. I feared all season since he had some injury issues that he would "do a berdych" and go out early and have so much pressure on him for the grass season but now 2011 looks awesome for Robin.

The sick thing is that it seems like Troicki will take out Murray so IF Soderling could take out Nadal I'm pretty sure about a third straight final. That would be crazy!

Just can't stand Rafa and his constant topspin high balls over the net waiting for errors. Worst thing to watch in tennis. Especially when it's windy because then there is no hope. Soderling can't serve in wind. Went out in US Open QF last year because of it. And probably never even got a real chance today because of it. He only has one game and that game doesn't work in wind.

So yeah Sod has played a lot of tennis without getting a good payoff. That is the drawback of winning 250s tournaments but not reaching SF/F in the major ones

Soderling might record some upset along the way in Wimbledon 2011. He was defeated by Nadal in the quarters of the French Open. But, he lacks the passion and intensity that made him a household name last year. With his wins on the tour this season, Robin might be able to land a Grand Slam title. Hopefully, it will come from the All England Club.

Yeah I think it is precautionary. Soderling obviously have pain there but I think he doesn't mind sporting some ice packs and bandages because he withdrew from Davis Cup so swedish media would be over him if he looked 100% healthy now in Wimbledon. Might as well make it show

MaxPower

Soderling said the following about the pictures when they got hold of him:

RS: I usually "ice" after practices. The body is feeling good. I had a good rest after Paris and I have been able to practice well.

Why do you use ice? Is it to dampen the pain?

RS: It is mostly precautionary. If i practice hard and change surfaces my feet takes a lot of punishment.

Are you in pain during practices?

RS: No, nothing.

I am happy I went here so early. Sunday-Wednesday, before the rain came, I practiced a lot. After that I was supposed to take it easier anyway.

Great match today, now he'll have an easier match against Andreev/Tomic (at least I hope). I hope he gets Andreev because with this youngsters you never know (look, Dimitrov also forced Tsonga to a decider and Harrison leads 2-1 sets against Ferrer) so it would probably be easier against Andreev.

H2H is 3-3 against Andreev (2-2 if you take away the Future results), Robin beat him very comfortably at the DC tie this year. He lost to him at Wimby 2005 in 4 sets, but I don't think that would matter much as Robin is way better now and Andreev way worse.

Was sad to see him play today. He obviously has been sick after the Hewitt match but didn't say anything to media about it. Think the medicine he took for the inflammation in his foot gave him stomach problems and possibly diarrhea. At least from what I've heard in his short conversations. That totally drains your body and there is no way you can compete in that state. He is a bit too stubborn and probably thought he could win vs Tomic anyway. how about the 4th round in AO?
it was his fault, I agree. this is a sport, it happens sometimes.

how about the matches in clay season?
He played with injuries all clay season.I have no claim to him.

On the Davis Cup match he was injured Achilles tendon, and he still has not healed it. Because of the same injury Karlovic missed nearly a year.
The best solution would be to miss the Spring Masters and treat his leg, but he decided to play. Stupid decision, because the such leg injury requires complete rest, but it was his decision and I accept it.

Unfortunately, he is no longer 20 years old, so he can not afford a big break in the game (several months) for treatment. His rating may fall heavily, and not the fact that he can then return to the top 10. Therefore, he plays as he can at this moment.

Of course, I would prefer that Robin was more rational, but I really love this player and I accept all his decisions. It's his career and he knows better what to do.

And yesterday he was really on the verge of fainting, it's strange that someone would not notice it.

Jonathan, you can always root for Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, perhaps it is easy and pleasant. :) This is not Soderling, who always disappoints.

:) This is not Soderling, who always disappoints.

if i really want to root for Federer,Nadal and Djokovic, why i come here everyday to see what happen to him..when all my friends support Djokovic,i am still in favor of Robin...

i just didn't want to see him in disorder on the court...

Maybe he will ask the wild card somewhere, but unlikely.

Entry lists of all tournaments before the Masters have been published. Masters are mandatory tournaments. And of course Robin will play Slam in any case.

R. Soderling - third round
Saturday, 25 June 2011

R. Soderling def by B. Tomic 1-6, 4-6, 5-7
Q. What went wrong for you out there today?

ROBIN SODERLING: Well, I don't know where to start.

Well, a lot of things went wrong obviously. It wasn't a great match. I didn't feel good on court at all. And, you know, I wasn't moving well. I was misjudging a lot of balls and I didn't have the right timing.

It was just not my day today.

Q. Can you tell us what was wrong with you? You were feeling sick?

ROBIN SODERLING: Yeah. Well, sick. I don't feel great, you know. I felt weak; I felt a little bit dizzy. I don't know. It wasn't just a good day.

Q. Do you think having been through a five setter beforehand was the cause or was it something else?

ROBIN SODERLING: No. I mean, it was two days ago and I felt pretty good after that match. I don't think it was because of that match.

Q. Did he take you by surprise, particularly in the first set?

ROBIN SODERLING: No, not really. He played a pretty good first set. But, you know, I was more worried about myself, you know, trying to find my game, trying to feel good on the court.

So, no, not really.

Q. Will this change anything regarding Davis Cup?

ROBIN SODERLING: No.

Q. You will not play?

ROBIN SODERLING: No.

Q. Did you wake up feeling not well, or was it only when you got on the court?

ROBIN SODERLING: Well, yesterday and today I've been playing a little bit low on energy. Not terrible, you know. I had some stomach problems. But, you know, I just haven't felt good. But nothing serious.

But on court, you know, I didn't feel perfect.

Q. Did they give you salt tablets or anything during the game?

ROBIN SODERLING: I got some tablets, yeah. I don't know what it was.

Q. Are you aware that some other players are feeling the same?

ROBIN SODERLING: No, I didn't know. No, I didn't know.

Q. He's obviously one of these next generation players we hear about. Do you feel there's a top 10 game there? Were you impressed?

ROBIN SODERLING: I don't know. I'm not the coach. You should ask someone else.

Q. Is he the best 18 year old you've played?

ROBIN SODERLING: I don't know if I ever played an 18 year old before. I don't know.

He's good. But I'm not the right guy to ask.

Robin always have so much pressure for Swedish Open. He knows that if he loses early he upsets a lot of people including the organizers. Also one of few tournaments that is sent directly on a channel available to all here in Sweden and everyone wants a swedish winner.

Think his final loss last year was the most disappointed I saw Soderling the whole 2010. Luckily Almagro is also back and I hope for a rematch. A 4th title would look be awesome as well. Got a decent shot at ending the year with 6-7 titles then. Not bad
