How often has the defending champ in a slam retired in two or more consecutive years?

I was just thinking about the Australian Open and realised that in both 2009 and 2010, the defending champion retired during a match and was unable to defend their slam. Djokovic in 2009 against Roddick, and Nadal in 2010 against Murray.

Has this ever happened before in the open era? What about three times or more?

We havent seen much chance of it in the last 7 years due to Federer winning so many slams, and he pretty much never retires. Maybe we would have seen it happen if not for him. A lot of good players have retired over the years in sucessive seasons.

Discuss.
