How can someone get that lucky and lose?

Farcical lack of line call at Match point no.4 might have cost Granollers on another day.

Ugly tennis, and it got worse and worse over time.

Haider-Maurer did it just last week in Vienna.

Vamos, Marcel :rocker: You show them why they should have given you a WC. Beat Pics on his own tournament!

Challenger quality match. Simply painful to watch, unless you're a Ferrer fan of course. Unless Granollers picks it up gigantically, he's going to get crushed. Fortunately for him, his opponent today put in what must be the worst performance in an atp semi I've ever seen.

Has to be something wrong with Simon, a virus or the knee problems again perhaps. Was just rolling the ball in on serve, returned with the silken touch of an elephant, and whenever he had to pick up a low ball he was making basic errors - bucketloads of them. Almost every 2nd point was a jawdroppingly atrocious error from him. Also doublefaulted every break.

Granollers was choking bigtime at the end, gifted away two breaks entirely on errors, but Simon was so godawful he couldn't do anything.

Vienna is not a 500 event but this match looks more like a qualifying match for a challenger.

Vienna is a 250. Anyway, Gilles had a bad serving day while Granollers served well. Gilles did put up a decent fight despite not playing well (he saved lots of break and match points). A few of the points in the last few games were really good as well.

No? I always thought it was a 500 :tape:

Pretty sure with the new ATP World Tour schedule, ATP 500s are always in the same week and 250s are always in the same week. No mixing and matching. Both Basel and Valencia are 500s this week, for instance. Not sure if that's the best strategy but I guess that's what the ATP wants...

Meanwhile, disappointing semifinal results today for me. Looking forward to the Basel final but meh to Valencia tomorrow.

All Spanish final :p

But this gives the Monfils-Simon AO 09 match a run for its money in terms of utter crappiness :o

That's not the case. Rotterdam (ATP500) was the same week as Costa do Sauipe (ATP250) and San Jose (ATP250) this year and the same for next year. Also ATP500s Memphis, Acapulco, Dubai and Hamburg are all held during weeks of ATP250s.

It's because Federer didn't chip and charge and serve and volley. Simon struggles against players who use that tactic well (e.g. Llodra). Federer was exchanging rallies with Gilles from the baseline and his backhand fell apart.

Too bad! . Totally unexpected defeat for Gilles. He has not been playing bad on the past months but this is a step back on his recovery.

There was a discussion some time ago on this forum about Granollers and this week results proves that is a much better player on hard than on clay. I do still believe that Pico missed a big chance to reach the finals here according to Gilles today performance.

I hope David can pick up the title and qualify for London.

Not a high quality match, but very good competing from Marcel, which made the difference. Simon wasn't any good v Davydenko so I knew he was vulnerable today. Granollers isn't a great match-up for him because Marcel plays that pit-pat style of tennis himself a lot of the time. Simon made tons of errors both trying to dictate and in normal rallies. His second serve was trash and Marcel attacked it constantly, and Simon looked disinterested.

Congrats to Marcel on taking advantage of his draw and making the finals of a 500 event as a LL, one of the best weeks for him in his career. All Spanish final in Valencia, something the fans must be very happy about.

So this was a bad match for Simon, but I'm not too disappointed. It's nice to see him building some form for 2011 because the situation was much worse a few months ago.

Excellent week for Marcel though! :worship:

This. Seriously, +10 to this.

I only caught the match about midway through the second set, and perhaps the performances before that point were masterclass, but what I witnessed was some of the ugliest tennis I have seen in a LONG time. They looked like total amateurs out there. Yikes. They both deserve to fall about 10 spots in the rankings for the show they put on today. :(

If Granollers resumes the form he was displaying late in the match, this isn't even a question. This will most likely be the most comfortable final that Ferrer has won in his career. As someone said in the Soderling thread, the "unofficial" final has already taken place.

Tired? He played better when he was chronically injured in Miami, and could barely hobble around the court.
